Polygamy-- let's spread the love.

Honestly, the only problem I see with polygamy is from a financial standpoint. Given the current economy we live in, a man needs to be quite rich to support multiple wives (and the children from those wives). It is already hard enough to support one family, why would any middle class man engage in polygamy?

Take a look at Hugh Hefner. The guy has more than one GF/Wife AND he treats them nicely. Hugh is a role model to many men. (Mostly sexual role model but w/e), so I see no harm at all.

For everyone who DO care for religion: ''Where there is love there is Jesus.''

Actually, that only assumes one wage earner, multiple wage earners would alleviate these financial problems.

Funny that you should bring up Hugh Hefner. Sure, he might be a role model for the extremely wealthy, but what about everyone else? All of those women are just gold diggers, and his polygamy is just a facade of money. This is a terrible example because it's such an unrealistic situation.

Polygamy is one of those things that's ok in small doses. But when it is practiced on a large scale it can really fuck things up. Lost boy syndrome, making the gene pool a lot more shallow, power struggles internally and among families, etc

Also, why is everyone assuming that polygamy = one man having multiple female slaves? Almost all of this thread is basing its reasoning off of that wrong assumption. It's completely voluntary, and it's perfectly possible for one woman to have multiple husbands. Nothing about supporting polygamy implies gender discrimination.

If anything, that "polygamy = one male dominating many females" world is more discriminatory to the men who now have to fight each other for the right to marry/breed. Women would at least get the freedom to choose whoever they want (or nobody), the joy of marriage, and the pleasure of being courted by many men, but most men would be stuck on their own....but of course we all know that women are the only victims in any society!

I haven't had time to read the full five pages, but every seems to be assuming that if polygamy was made legal, every man would automatically want to have multiple wives.
Legalising polygamy would only really concern people who were involved in open relationships, or something of a similiar nature. How many people do you know that are openly seeing two people and both of those people are okay with it? If it was made legal with consent, it would probably be a rare thing anyway due to the majority of people wanting to spend life with one person only.
I really can't see the issue with polygamy when it affects a small minority of people- that is if it was made legal with consent from everybody involved.
