Swanna @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Hydration
EVs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- Scald
- Brave Bird
- Hurricane
- Defog

When a choice scarf is tied on, this sets up Swanna as a counter. I had considered her usual Z-Crystal shenanigans, but a choice scarf covers a wider variety of outcomes. Whatever is out against Combusken first, a wise Combusken player may consider it to be scared away, and will reap the benefits with a Swords Dance. Upon seeing Swanna switching in place, the wise player will likely use Protect to guarantee outpacing the usual Swanna, then proceed to reduce her to ashes with a +2 Z-Flare Blitz after seemingly outpacing her. With a Choice Scarf, Swanna hits 486 speed compared to Combusken's 458 after 2 speed boosts. In this case, the only thing stopping her outright is the 33% chance of the second consecutive protect in a row. With luck on her side, even a Scald will be enough to quell the Combusken's flame

Another potential outcome is withstanding the Flare Blitz or Z-Flare Blitz coming in, protecting to try and outpace for +2 speed, and failing to attack again thanks to the scarf. Unrelated benefits include outpacing the usual scarf Primeape

252 Atk Combusken Flare Blitz vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Swanna: 107-126 (36.7 - 43.2%)
252 Atk Combusken Inferno Overdrive (190 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Swanna: 169-200 (58 - 68.7%)
+2 252 Atk Combusken Flare Blitz vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Swanna: 213-252 (73.1 - 86.5%)
+2 252 Atk Combusken Inferno Overdrive (190 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Swanna: 339-399 (116.4 - 137.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Yeah, after protecting, the usual Z-crystal set's not outliving another hit from these

Reserving Jellicent

Jellicent
"The Fire Chicken Killer"
Defensive Counter

Jellicent @ Colbur Berry
Ability: Cursed Body
EVs: 252 HP / 224 Def / 32 Spe
Bold Nature
- Scald
- Taunt
- Toxic
- Recover

Combusken can be quite difficult to stop in its tracks once it gets going, however there are very few mons who simply stop it altogether. Jellicent just happens to be one of them! Comparatively to another great counter in the likes of Swanna, Jellicent shares that resistance to its Fire type attacks. However, Jellicent due to its ghost typing, doesn't even have to worry about Combusken's other STAB. On top of that, Jellicent also has a very PU-unique ability in the likes of Cursed Body, which can cause Combusken to not even be able to touch Jellicent with the one move it has that can actually touch Jellicent. Reliable recovery and access to Taunt to round out the set causes quite a pain for the Combusken player.

Because of these amazing characteristics, Jellicent is without a doubt, perhaps the best overall counter to the fire chicken.

Mudsdale @ Iapapa Berry
Impish Nature
Ability: Stamina
EVs: 252 HP / 132 Def / 124 SpD
- Stealth Rock
- Earthquake
- Toxic
- Rock Slide

Mudsdale is a good check as it will always beat an unboosted Combusken one on one, and even a +2 Inferno Overdrive is a coinflip to KO from full HP. With Stamina factored in, Flare Blitz into Inferno Overdrive never 2HKOes, so Mudsdale can switch into most of its moves and only loses if Combusken Swords Dances on the switch.

0 Atk Mudsdale Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Combusken: 396-468 (151.7 - 179.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 Atk Combusken Flare Blitz vs. 252 HP / 132+ Def Mudsdale: 118-139 (29.2 - 34.4%) -- 5.4% chance to 3HKO
252 Atk Combusken Inferno Overdrive (190 BP) vs. +1 252 HP / 132+ Def Mudsdale: 126-148 (31.1 - 36.6%) -- 72.5% chance to 3HKO
+2 252 Atk Combusken Inferno Overdrive (190 BP) vs. 252 HP / 132+ Def Mudsdale: 373-439 (92.3 - 108.6%) -- 50% chance to OHKO

Yes I know I reserved Pyukumuku, but on closer reflection I decided to use something that was less niche.

Poliwrath @ Leftovers
Ability: Water Absorb
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Relaxed Nature
- Circle Throw
- Scald
- Rest
- Sleep Talk

Poliwrath is a counter to Combusken as it can come in into any move and it won't take too much damage - Poliwrath can also use
Circle Throw to force a switch so Combusken will loose all of its boosts it did go for with Swords Dance in conjunction with Speed Boost ability.
Poliwrath Scald is also enough to have a Chance to OHKO Combusken after Stealth Rock-Chip. Combusken also takes recoil from
its fire-STAB Move in Flare Blitz, which makes it vulnerable in the long term of the game whereas Poliwrath has access to Rest + Sleep Talk
which gives it alongside Leftovers some form of nice recovery. All in all Combusken strongly dislikes all these factors, which Poliwraht can go for
therefore Poliwrath is very annoying to Combusken.

Calcs:
252 Atk Combusken Flare Blitz vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Poliwrath: 54-65 (14 - 16.9%) -- possible 9HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
252 Atk Combusken Sky Uppercut vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Poliwrath: 78-93 (20.3 - 24.2%) -- possible 5HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
+2 252 Atk Combusken Sky Uppercut vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Poliwrath: 156-184 (40.6 - 47.9%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
+2 252 Atk Combusken Flare Blitz vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Poliwrath: 110-129 (28.6 - 33.5%) -- guaranteed 4HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

0 SpA Poliwrath Scald vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Combusken: 194-230 (74.3 - 88.1%) -- 6.3% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock
0 Atk Poliwrath Circle Throw vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Combusken: 94-112 (36 - 42.9%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock

Ninjask @ Life Orb
Ability: Speed Boost
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance

- Aerial Ace

Ninjask works as a check to Combusken. Switching into a fire move would turn it into ashes. Once it gets in, though, it manages to beat Busk even at +2 speed. Protect will only delay the inevitable as both have Speed Boost.

Remaining moveset allows Ninjask to set up and regain health throughout the game.

Stealth rocks reeeee

EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpA
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk

Altaria resists both Flare Blitz and Sky Uppercut. Toxic and Haze allows Altaria to reliably beat Combusken.

252 Atk Combusken Flare Blitz vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Altaria: 57-67 (16.1 - 18.9%) -- possible 8HKO after Leftovers recovery

252 Atk Combusken Sky Uppercut vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Altaria: 40-48 (11.2 - 13.5%) -- possibly the worst move ever

EVs: 248 HP / 8 Atk / 252 Def
Impish Nature
- Waterfall

Qwilfish is one of the best combusken counters due to its defensive ability to put hazards, lower its attack by -1 and withstand the combusken Stabs, it is able to put 2 Layers of Toxic spikes or Spikes and make OHKO after the recoil of the Rocky Helmet, endures Combusken very well with Swords dance in the Field and is capable of removing all the boosts with Haze, that makes him very fearsome against combusken

Dodrio @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Early Bird
Happiness: 0
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Brave Bird
- Frustration
- Jump Kick
- Toxic

Unsure why no one picked this up before me but Choice Scarf Dodrio is an offensive check to Combusken, as the chicken can't outspeed it unless it gets to +3. Since this is highly unlikely with it having to get either a double or triple Protect, Dodrio is easily able to OHKO Combusken with Brave Bird and be on its way.

Oh, Ninjask is not allowed. I'll take Carracosta

carracosta.gif

Carracosta @ Life Orb
Ability: Solid Rock
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Naughty Nature
- Shell Smash
- Stone Edge
- Aqua Jet
- Hydro Pump / Liquidation

The usual shell smash set, doing work as a check to Combusken. Water-type moves keep that spicy chicken at bay, and priority with Aqua Jet means you will outspeed Busk no matter what. Life Orb is meant to be used as a pinch saver, as Carracosta wouldn't be able to take a +2 Uppercut after being chipped, but it's possible to win without it.

252+ Atk Life Orb Carracosta Aqua Jet vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Combusken: 250-296 (95.7 - 113.4%) -- 68.8% chance to OHKO
252+ Atk Life Orb Carracosta Liquidation vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Combusken: 530-624 (203 - 239%) -- guaranteed OHKO
0- SpA Life Orb Carracosta Hydro Pump vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Combusken: 354-421 (135.6 - 161.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ Atk Life Orb Carracosta Stone Edge vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Combusken: 309-367 (118.3 - 140.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252 Atk Combusken Sky Uppercut vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Solid Rock Carracosta: 123-145 (42.5 - 50.1%) -- 1.2% chance to 2HKO
+2 252 Atk Combusken Sky Uppercut vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Solid Rock Carracosta: 243-288 (84 - 99.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Against 90% HP Carracosta:
+2 252 Atk Combusken Sky Uppercut vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Solid Rock Carracosta: 243-288 (84 - 99.6%) -- 62.5% chance to OHKO
(In another words, 80,5% chance to beat +2 Busk with Life Orb Aqua Jet) If I didn't miscalc

Offensive Counter

Silvally-Dragon @ Dragon Memory
Ability: RKS System
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
- Draco Meteor
- Surf
- Defog
- Parting Shot

Silvally Dragon Functions fairly well as a counter to the flaming chicken. Silvally's respectable bulk, resistance to fire, and relatively good offensive stats allow it to switch in to the chicken reliably every time. An unboosted combusken can not 2hko Silvally, even after rocks. This allows Silvally to have an alternate role of safely defogging on combusken, then being able to retaliate on the next turn with surf or draco meteor. If their combusken swords dances as you switch in, you can just click draco meteor or surf, to ohko their combusken. Lastly, a Timid Silvally can be used to almost the same effect, but leaves the surf to a 50% chance to ohko, and draco at 93.8%

Calcs Below

252+ SpA Silvally-Dragon Draco Meteor vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Combusken: 282-333 (108 - 127.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ SpA Silvally-Dragon Surf vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Combusken: 260-308 (99.6 - 118%) -- 93.8% chance to OHKO

252 Atk Combusken Inferno Overdrive (190 BP) vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Silvally-Dragon: 121-143 (36.5 - 43.2%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
252 Atk Combusken Sky Uppercut vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Silvally-Dragon: 109-129 (32.9 - 38.9%) -- 99.2% chance to 3HKO

+1 252 Atk Floatzel Aqua Jet vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Combusken: 254-302 (97.3 - 115.7%) -- 81.3% chance to OHKO

Bulk up life orb is the better check over banded but has counter play by sword dance into either Z or sky uppercut will KO floatzel 8 def +1, but if You liquidation on their 2nd turn(they don't protect) You're faster and don't need to bulk up. It's a bad 50/50 at the end of the day

But there is one floatzel set that can always win this match-up

Ok, I want to take this time to emphasize a few things.

1) Only submit RANKED mons! If the Pokemon you're submitting is not ranked on the Viability Rankings (and NO, E rank does not count!), it will not be taken into account! This is clearly outlined in the rules on page 1 folks. INSANE CARZY GUY, Basculin is rank E and this is what I'm talking about. I already had to send this message along to 2 others for this week and I do appreciate you guys being flexible and changing your submissions. But please, abide by the simple rules and submit ranked mons that work!

2) Please provide reasonable reasoning! I am glad that you guys are telling me that your submission is a check or counter but some of you don't explain why and you use the calcs as your reasoning. This is part of it but what about people trying to get into the meta? They could probably use an explanation on how to use it and such.

3) Reservations! Some of you do reserve your mons and then revise your posts within the 24-hour time limit but for others I do have to send you a private message for you to get on it. I shouldn't have to! You guys are investing in the thread and are making good submissions. I hate having to hunt you guys down for this.

Thanks for your time!

Anyway.....for my submission so I don't double post

Offensive check. At first, you'd think it would be a counter but it cannot come in on an SD, take an Inferno Overdrive, and then a subsequent Flare Blitz. So yeah, it has to come in safely before Busk does anything to be effective since Drain Punch is a 2HKO:

44+ Atk Gurdurr Drain Punch vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Combusken: 145-172 (55.5 - 65.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

and Gurdurr can live a few hits:
