Serious R.I.P. Roger Ebert

Mack the Knife

Goodbye Smogon! I may return, I may not!
is a Smogon Media Contributor Alumnus
Roger Ebert was a great film critic. Yes, he may have liked a few bad films (Speed 2: Cruise Control) and disliked a few good ones (To Kill a Mocking Bird), but he admitted that they were mistakes and didn't really argue with those who said he was wrong. I admire how well written and insightful his reviews were and that he always gave his real opinion. He deserved his Pulitzer no doubt about it. He shall be missed. You can use this thread to discuss his reviews, your favorites, and say what you liked and disliked about him. The one thing I admire about him is that he kept on writing his reviews, even though he lost his jaw, so he kept on working without being able to eat or speak. Now I have 2 requests: be respectful and do not rage about his opinion that video games aren't art.

I'll always disagree with him about video games, but I fucking loved Roger Ebert. Checked his site daily, spent countless hours reading his funniest reviews. He actually inspired me to write movie reviews. Loved the man, news of his death makes me very very sad.

I'm very shocked to hear this...I didn't think he knew his video games but I respected his talents as a movie critic, he will be missed.

I always looked forward to the mornings when movies came out to read Roger Ebert's reviews. Especially the reviews of the really bad movies. The movies he liked did not get quite the comedic glory of his other reviews, like for instance his look at the movie The Prince of Persia. I almost woke the rest of the sleeping house reading that particular review.
I stand with the rest: he will be missed

The only film critic I followed. I always enjoyed his reviews and very rarely did I disagree with him. Really sad that both him and Siskel died of cancer.

I rarely read film reviews, but Ebert was one of the people I read so *shrug* I recall disagreeing with his opinion on Gladiator because I thought it was a pretty good movie.

I don't think that anybody can really fault him for his opinion on video games as art. It did lead to a discussion on what art even is, and in the end, as I recall, he compared video games to chess, and distinguished games from art. But in any case, it simply wasn't his time, and the sad attempts by some video game companies to convince him didn't help.

I've been reading some of his older reviews and even when he disliked one my favorites, Hudsucker Proxy, I still admired how he managed to point out his opinion so honestly, intelligently, and humorously. Rest in peace, Mr. Ebert, Rest in Peace.`

ebert was great. a smart dude whose reviews are single handedly responsible for half of my movie viewing history. i guess he didn't understand video games very well. i think he had a valid point, but it just wasn't his craft.

can we please focus on something else, like his legendary movie reviews and insane creative wisdom, instead of this tried and true debate? i figure if i don't say this now this thread will be hella derailed

goodnight sweet prince

This didn't mean a whole lot to me until I found this out: http://www.phideltatheta.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=693

I had no idea he was a fellow Phi. One of our most famous brothers died =(.

I never really read his reviews, but I do remember this particularly hilarious internet troll where people flooded imdb with rave reviews for a my little pony movie. He noticed it and I think actually may have believed it for a second or two. Here's the full story:

saw this cracked article which had a decently lengthy section on roger ebert written only very slightly before his passing and i was actually kinda touched by it

Here's the scathing review of North, on this subject. It's actually a very well-written review, with comedy and seriousness mingled throughout. You think he's just hating on it, but he does point out some very serious flaws in the movie.

He had excellent reviews, and his legacy will always be remembered.

But........ He was a bit of a dick as well, any of you guys remember what his response was when Ryan Dunn died. "Friends don't let jackasses drink and drive" just something to think about.
