Random Battle Ladder

What the title says, We need a ladder for random battles.

The reasons are:

1- It's incredibly tedious to find someone to play it with
2- It would be amazingly fun to try to ladder in it.

What do you guys think?

Well SB2 will have an unrated Find Tab unless that's only for official ladder tiers as well, but I agree having a ladder for randbats would just be so much fun.

Yeah I've been asking the same thing a lot. Some of the mods say that in SB2, there's going to be a random ladder and also a NU ladder. I hope their correct :) Oh, I also can't wait for the double battles. Hehehehe.

I think the Pokemonexperte server has a Random Battle Ladder, with a clause that sounds like a good idea: "Fair Random Battle Clause", when each pokemon has at least 2 attacking moves. The only problem with that is when you have pokemon who are known as walls, like Skarmory and Blissey.

I don't understand why "random battles" need a ladder. The point of a ladder is so that people can play competitively. I don't think there is really anything competitive about Random Battles, they are almost purely "luck" and (most importantly) there is really no connection between Smogon and Random Battles.

If there was a "find match" button for unrated battles (similar to the current one for Ladders, just with no CRE or ladder to go with it), then maybe that would be the best plan. This would make the "tediousness" go away, while also not straying from Smogon's main goal, which is to be a place for purely competitive Pokemon.

Just my 2 cents.

Random Battle may have a huge luck element to it, but it's still competitive. While very different to normal play, being given six Pokemon totally at random, and then playing them to the best of your ability, certainly presents a unique challenge.
Maybe identical team random battle would be good. Both players get a random team, but the SAME random team. That way the luck element is reduced to normal levels.

It depends what you mean by competitive. Why I mean by random battles being "not competitive", is that they are not a "balanced, stable, tested, etc" metagame.

Making the two people get the same team doesn't do much to help this really.

Additionally, they are not connected to Smogon the way that the other ladders are / will be (OU, UU, Ubers, soon to be Little Cup, and possibly NU).

well a randbat ladder would make finding randbats a lot easier so i'm excited for shoddy 2

I'm all for making it easier to find Randbats, but is a Ladder really necessary?

With the huge luck element (does not make it "less competitive", but would make ladder ranking much less reliable) and the fact that in cartage Pokemon it's hugely impractical and relies on an outside RNG a randbat ladder seems unnecessary, but a find tab could be very useful.

Edit: You can see how a randbat ladder would function right now if you head over to pokemonexperte.

I stand by my first post, but the idea to use the same teams is absolute rubbish, cause you'd know the other's team and easily end up in a lame battle.

I disagree that knowing your opponents team results in a lame battle. As you may know, the current battle finder is liable to match the same people up for two battles in a row. I've found many of these 'rematches' to be highly enjoyable, just as much so as battles against an unknown team.

Of course, in these you don't know EVERYTHING about the opposing team. Also, since randbats are very much about unpredictability, identical teams lose that uniqueness.

Also, since you can't open up the team in Team Builder, you have no clue whatsoever as to the movesets/EVs/IVs/nature of your pokemon. You may have a Salamence with Substitute, Toxic, Dragon Dance, Dragon Claw or a Salamence with Fire Blast, Fire Fang, Flamethrower, Dragon Dance (just making these up), but you don't know which it is until you switch it in. (Which I think is the reason there's practically no switching in randbats.)

You'll be able to do this in Shoddy 2 though.

The same teams each side idea wouldn't fix anything - nothing will ever change randbats from being primarily luck based. However I think some people are still underestimating the skills required to win regularly, eg. you need to know the mechanics of moves that are rarely seen, what each Pokemon can learn, the basic stats of NFEs etc, and towards the end of the match predicting does become a factor.

Being uncompetitive shouldn't mean it can't have a ladder, everyone knows it's simply a novelty and wouldn't be taken seriously. This would make randbats lots more fun, isn't that the reason we play Pokemon for in the first place? If it gets enough support, I don't see any harm done tbh. But if it's decided SB2's unrated matchmaking is enough then that's ok too, I would just really love the option of a "casual" ladder like this after you've had enough serious laddering for the day. Just my thoughts..

There is no way to make every random battle completely fair (to the point that the only variables are the players' skill and hax), and if there was a random battle ladder, it would be nigh impossible to get consistant ratings because of, well, the randomness.
Even if people want a "casual" ladder just for sh1ts and giggles, there would be endless bitching because how "unfair, hard and haxy" the battling is.

Obviously the fact that your team is being chosen at random will affect the battle. However, Level Balance and the suggestion that every Pokemon have a certain minimum number of attacking moves would certainly help keep teams from being disastrously bad.

As for people complaining about it, well, if you don't like randomness, why the hell are you playing randbats?

Personally, I'd like to see a randbat ladder. They're really quite fun, and there's still quite a bit of skill involved, so a ladder would actually be reasonable.

I'd also love to see a random battle ladder -- of sorts. I don't want it to lose players CRE. I think the "casual" ladder is just about the best idea I've heard for shoddy...ever. The ability to battle without worry, therefore be able to try new ideas, is great.

I agree.

Random Battles are real fun but difficult to get...
Smogon could do like the pokemonexperte server because the basic rules are already chosen and because i would hate to learn German...

Still, in the long run the best players win more than bad ones. With right rules Random Ladder could be intresting.
