Welcome to the new and improved Regional Evolutions Pet Mod! This is the unofficial sequel to the now-defunct Gen VIII Regional Evolutions pet mod, the very first pet mod I ever participated in and the one I've still had the most success with, which was concluded before the release of Generation IX and everything that came with it. That pet mod was intended as an extension of a "Regional Variants" mod from the same generation, except that all submissions received an evolved form in the vein of a cross-gen evolution, or an alternate evolution to a regional variant of an unevolved Pokémon. It was rather successful for its time, but with the meta having changed with a new generation of canon games, I figured it was high time we got an updated version of this mod, so I figured it'd be nice to helm said updated version and help build up a new regional evo collection from scratch!
For the unfamiliar, a regional form, also known as a regional variant, is an alternate form of a Pokémon species that is found in a specific region; these forms differ from those found in the region where the Pokémon was introduced, usually even to the point of having a different type, and may also evolve into different Pokémon from their original counterpart, which may sometimes be unable to evolve normally. Regional forms were introduced in Gen VII, and regional evolutions in Gen VIII. It is the latter that we will be focusing on for this pet mod, and although the former will also be included for the sake of completeness, each and every sub for each slate of this pet mod will be required to have a regional evolution, even if the original 'mon was a standalone.

New Stage Evolutions
A new species that is part of the Regional line, essentially an extra evolution stage akin to traditional cross-generation evolutions. It cannot be given to a line that already have three stages and not recommended to anything higher than 485 BST.

Replacement Evolutions
Some Regional Variants instead evolve into a different Pokémon of the same stage instead of the usual one (example, Galarian Meowth evolves into Perrserker, not a Galarian Persian). Can be given to any line with two or three stages, but you cannot give the original evolution counterpart to anything with a Replacement Evolution. (I.E. Galarian Persian cannot be made as a counterpart of Perrserker.)
Slate Rules (modified from Samtendo09's rules for the Gen 8 Regional Evolutions pet mod):
- This is a Natdex micrometa, meaning we will only be including the winning submissions in the mod's meta. This is for the sake of easier judging of submission viability, though the submissions themselves will be assumed to have been introduced in Gen 9, if only for the sake of some stuff associated with canon 'mons such as egg groups and moves learned by breeding.
- You may submit for any legal line you’d like as long as you include either a New Stage Evolution or a Replacement Evolution. This includes Branched Evos, except for Eevee and Tyrogue themselves (their respective evolutions are okay). Any other branched evo line will count as a single submission (so feel free to make a whole Ralts line, for an example). Giving just a New Stage Evolution to a canon regional variant that doesn’t have one is also permitted.
- You may submit for up to a total of 6 evolutionary families. Adding a New Stage Evolution for a pre-existing Regional Variant or an accepted submission (preferably yours) counts as a full line.
- Two people may make a Regional Variant of the same evolutionary line, or a New Stage Evolution for a pre-existing or accepted submissions, as long as the two submissions are different from each other.
- Do not make a regional “counterpart” to an existing Regional Evolution (see this list for the full details), or any accepted New Stage/Replacement Evolutions.
- You also cannot submit an evolution of the original counterparts even if their regional variants have one. This is Regional Evolutions, not just Evolutions.
- If any of your submissions gets disqualified for being incomplete, I will try and find a future slate where each of them can fit and have it automatically submitted to that slate, provided that you complete it before the slate deadline. However, the maximum number of new submissions you can make for any slate that any previously incomplete entries of yours is auto-subbed to will be reduced by the number of your subs that are auto-subbed to this particular slate. You can also resubmit any previous entry of yours that didn't win a previous slate poll into another one in the future, provided that it fits the requirements of the slate, with the obvious exception of free slates. Some free slates may include certain conditions, though, so be sure to read the slate header and the additional requirements before submitting.
- You may vote for up to 7 evolutionary families per slate, and your votes should include both the family of your choice and the username (preferably without tagging them directly) of their creator. You cannot self-vote more than two submissions, and if you do self-vote, vote for at least three more submissions that aren't yours. In addition, please tag your self-votes or your entire vote collection will be rejected.
- Minimum BST for the New Stage Evolutions will be 500, with the maximum will be 600. However, try to aim for 500-530 BST range unless you have a good flavor reason for the New Stage Evolution to have a higher BST.
- The net change for the BST must equal 0, and it's not recommended to change more than +/- 30 in any single stat. You cannot increase a Pokémon's higher attack/defense if the difference between both attacks/defense is more than 50. For example, Tauros has an attack "gap" of 60 (100 - 40), so you can't add to its higher Attack stat. You can deduct from it, however, to put toward other stats. Also, try not to go too crazy with boosting already powerful stats; Just because you can make a Tyranitar form with 164 base Attack doesn't mean you should. You may swap a Pokémon's stats before modifying them, but the gap rule still applies to the new higher stat. For New Stage Evolutions, you may add also up to +50 for any (and more than one) stat as long as the attack/defense gap isn’t more than 50.
- Pokémon with a BST of 486 or higher should not be given a New Stage Evolution. Exception will be given for Regional Forms that are exceptionally poor in competitive scene, or that you honestly think it wouldn’t perform so well. Even then, consider a New Stage Evolution as an option in this case instead of mandatory. Otherwise a Replacement Evolution is always an option. Unlike the other rules starting from 3rd March 2022, this is not the hard rule anymore, but I do recommend to stick with the BST lower than 486 unless your submission have bad, bad typing, and will be judged by case-by-case basis.
- Pokémon that is already a three-stage evolutionary line (i.e. Pichu to Raichu, Cleffa to Clefable) are not allowed to received a New Stage Evolution. However, a Replacement Evolution is always possible for these.
- Avoid min-maxing, obviously. New Stage Evolutions tend to much stronger than their pre-evolution, so be cautious of what stats and abilities you give them. For Replacement Evolutions, their BST is required to be identical to that of their canon counterpart, though the stat distribution can otherwise differ as much as you want.
- Each submission must keep the same amount of abilities or fewer as with the original species. They must preferably be already-existing abilities or a custom clone ability, i.e. a new ability that works a bit differently from the original in term of interacted Type, Stats, Weather or Terrain. If the original Pokémon your submission is based on has only one ability, that ability can be changed, but for more than one ability, the number of abilities changed must be one less than the total, i.e. one changed ability for a Pokemon with two possible abilities, or up to two changed abilities for one with three total (this includes their Hidden Ability). Additionally, only one custom clone ability is acceptable as long as it isn't broken.
- New Stage Evolutions can have up to six new moves that their pre-evolution(s) cannot learn. If you decided to give it a new Type and that the Pokémon was single-typed, then ten extra Moves (preferably for STAB and flavor) will be added instead. Custom moves are allowable, but only if they are clones of existing ones (i.e. a Ghost-type Play Rough) and explicitly identified as such, and only if they are of the same type as one of the types of the submission itself; additionally, you can only add up to two custom moves per submission, one for each type if the submission is dual-typed. If your submission is single-typed, it should receive no more than one custom move.
- The above restriction does not apply to TMs, as you can add or remove whatever you think works with the updated typing. For the sake of forward compatibility with future generations, the TM list you'll need to use as a reference here will be the official Gen 9 one; once the next generation games are officially released, should this mod be still ongoing by then, the TM list will be updated accordingly.
- Certain TM moves can be learned by nearly all Pokémon (with exceptions as per Bulbapedia's decree) - these do not need to be included in the TMs to remove or add for each of your submissions. Check this list to see what these Universal TM moves are.
- Original branched evolutions can each receive a New Stage Evolution as long as it respects the conditions required for one. Otherwise, it’s Replacement Evolutions instead. A New Stage Evolution or Replacement Evolution can be branched as well, but no more than two branched evolutions per line.
- Don't forget to give Height and Weight to your New Stage Evolutions. Weight is especially important does to moves like Low Kick and Grass Knot.
- For each sub, the typing can be changed as much as desired; some regional variant families are of a completely different typing compared to their original counterparts. However, the evolutionary family must share at the least one typing, unless only the evolved form is receiving a regional variant (e.g. Alolan Marowak).
- Not every canon Regional Variant with BST below 485 and are single-stage or stage 1 evo needs a New Stage Evolution. Things like Alolan Marowak and especially Galarian Darmanitan will go overkill with a New Stage Evolution. The rest that would be compatible for a new evolution are fine.
- A regional variant that the new evolution evolves from is required for any and all subs, without exception. If you don't provide a variant of the base Pokémon to serve as a pre-evo for the regional evolution, your submission will be automatically marked as incomplete. You cannot, for instance, submit an alternate evolution to Scyther without a regional variant of Scyther itself to go with it, nor will an alternate evolution of Girafarig be accepted without a variant for it as well. Even though Kleavor and Farigiraf are newly introduced evolutions in Gen 9, they evolve from the base forms of Scyther and Girafarig, respectively, and thus cannot be considered regional evolutions.
- Replacement Evolutions follows the same rules as standard Regional Variants, but with a new name instead of “[Regional Pre-Fix] Pokémon”, and be sure that the design is drastic from the original evolution. They must share the same BST as the original evolution of the Pokémon, like how Perrserker (the Replacement Evolution) and Persian (the original) shares the same BST.
- Due to taking place in NatDex (where Mega Stones and Z-Moves can be used), there will be no "unusable" moves. However, you cannot give a Mega Evolution, Gigantamax form, or any other gimmick form to any submission unless if the original counterpart had any.
- Convergent Pokémon, or ecologically similar Pokémon as Bulbapedia calls them, are acceptable for all slates in place of true regional variants, but I will only allow them in limited capacity to prevent them from overtaking this mod's original intention. To this end, you can replace up to two of your six submissions with convergent families instead (i.e. if you submit two convergent families, you can only submit four variant families, and submitting only one convergent will allow for five variants), though as per the mod's concept, they will need to have an extra unique evolution of their own as well - an entirely new concept, but hopefully we can make it work! I will update the rules accordingly in a bit, but for now, remember to state which region each convergent is from and what canon Pokémon they're based on - obviously, the convergent shouldn't be in the same region its counterpart was introduced in.
- Due to being entirely new species, both Regional Evolutions and Convergent Pokémon do not need the pre-fix name of the respective region (though the latter will still need to have their region of origin listed in their respective submissions), but regional variants require both the name and the new region in the submission title. The name of each region's variants are as follows:
- Kanto - Kantonian
- Johto - Johtonian
- Hoenn - Hoennian
- Sinnoh - Sinnohan
- Hisui - Hisuian
- Unova - Unovan
- Kalos - Kalosian
- Alola - Alolan
- Galar - Galarian
- Paldea - Paldean
- Orre - Orrean
- Kitakami - Kitakamian
- Ultra Space - Ultra
- Distortion World - Distorted
- Paradox eras - Ancient/Future
- NOTE: While Paradox Pokémon themselves are off the table, Ancient or Future variant forms of the Pokémon families the canon Paradoxes are based on are still acceptable, provided that they do NOT directly evolve into the Paradoxes proper, though being reminiscent of them is fine (let's just say a certain time machine might've tweaked them a little when bringing them to the present...). You can make an Ancient Phanphy line whose Donphan variant (or its evolution) is reminiscent of Great Tusk, for instance, but you cannot have Great Tusk itself as one of the stages. There's a lot of inspirational material from both actual prehistory and various media about future animals (both the sci-fi kind and the speculative evolution kind) to make use of here, so feel free to think more creatively than "it's just Amoongus but dinosaur-like", "it's just Hydreigon but robotic", etc.
- Flavor rules for all submissions are as follows:
- All New Stage Evolutions must keep the same theme and type for their respective “pre-evolutions”. That said, you may add a type if the “pre-evolution” is single-typed, or change one of the two types (but not both). Obviously, New Stage Evolutions and Replacement Evolutions should be given to only pre-evolutions that are Regional Variants, and not standard variants.
- Legendary Pokémon, Mythical Pokémon, Ultra Beasts, and canon Paradox Forms cannot receive regional variants let alone evolutions. If your submission is based on any Pokémon identified as such, it will be automatically and immediately vetoed.
- You may not make a regional variant or convergent line for a Pokémon family based on the region where it debuted. For an example, it would not make sense for Bisharp to get an Unovan Form, since it already is from Unova. The only exception to this rule is the Gumshoos line due to it not being originally from Alola, and the Crawdaunt line for similar reasons.
- Justify the changes made. Explain why the Pokémon has changed types and learned the moves it does. Also please explain how it would look in this new form. You must give new Height and Weight for a New Stage Evolution while also making it sound more distinct than it’s “pre-evolution”.
- An evolutionary line must be entirely based on the same region. In other words, please don’t make a Kalonese Riolu evolve into a Hoennian Lucario. The only exception to this rule is with Kantonian / Johtonese forms evolving into one another due to the regions being right next to one another.
- It is important to note that you should make the Regional Evolution more like a “logical conclusion” to the Regional Variant form, and not something of an hypothetical Evolution for the original counterpart. This is done in order to keep the regional line unique and interesting.
- Formatting your subs according to the official submission format for this pet mod is not a strict requirement, but doing so would be vastly preferable to save me and any coders brought on board in the future a ton of potential headaches. For convenience, the template for all submission elements is provided below:

These are the slates I've come up with for this mod - aside from the free slates, the current generations are divided into collections of three, and will be worked through in numerical order. I considered doing slates for each gen individually but that might take up too many slates which would take up too much time, so I had to be a little more conservative in slate organization.

Miscellaneous:
- Coders are welcome! I don't know how to code for Pokémon Showdown myself, so I'd be happy to work with anyone who's willing to put the concepts that are accepted into this mod into action.
- Council members are also welcome, since I'm busy enough as it is IRL that I might not always be available to help or supervise with the activity for this mod and its slates. It may be that this mod will have to be run by a larger council, but that depends on the eventual complexity of the project as a whole. If anyone who reads this is interested in becoming a council member, please send me a DM with a list of what you believe are your qualifications for such.
- I'm not sure about whether to include gimmicks such as Mega Evolution, Gigantamaxing, and Z-Moves for any submitted regional evolutions, but may be subject to an initial poll to determine whether they'll be acceptable. Terastrallizing would probably be banned, though, for obvious reasons.
- Convergent/lookalike and Paradox Pokémon will likely not be included in this mod, since I'm not sure if those count towards regional variants or not, and we do not have examples of convergent Pokémon evolving into their own thing that doesn't look like the Pokémon they resemble. That is a question to be decided by the 0th slate, though.
- A fakedex sheet on Google Sheets is provided above, so people can check which submissions have already been accepted - as with the Gen 8 version, they will be separated by region, with each variant being listed in the national dex order of the Pokémon family it's based on.
- Last but not least, good luck, and have fun!
