[Overview]

Regirock is one of the bulkiest Pokemon in the game, with defensive prowess rivaling that of Eviolite users and Uber Pokemon alike. Regirock's typing is a mixed bag; on one hand, it can take on Entei and Honchkrow with ease, but on the other, it has nasty weaknesses to common Grass-, Water-, Ground-, and Fighting-type moves. Regirock faces stiff competition from Steelix, Aggron, and Rhydon, but its mono-Rock typing grants it fewer weaknesses and more opportunities to switch in. Despite its high Attack stat, Regirock tends to slow down momentum and can bring the match to a standstill in some cases. Regardless of its flaws, Regirock can shut down some dangerous threats and provide top-notch support, making it an excellent addition to your team.

[SET COMMENTS]

Thanks to its incredible bulk, Regirock can provide valuable support in the form of Stealth Rock and Thunder Wave. Entei, Honchkrow, Swellow, and Scolipede are stopped in their tracks, while many more threats are slowed down by Regirock's great defensive ability. Regirock isn't lacking in the offensive department either; thanks to its base 100 Attack and STAB Rock-type moves, Regirock isn't shut down by Taunt and poses a decent offensive threat on its own. Stone Edge is Regirock's STAB move of choice because of its higher Base Power, but Rock Slide can be used if you prefer its higher accuracy. Drain Punch gives Regirock a way to restore its health and provides great type coverage, while Earthquake is more powerful and hits Gallade neutrally.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

The HP and Defense EVs ensure that mixed Honchkrow will never 2HKO Regirock with Superpower after Stealth Rock damage, while the remaining EVs are placed into Attack to give it some firepower. A specially defensive spread of 252 HP / 56 Def / 200 SpD can be used to counter Moltres and other special attackers, but Regirock becomes significantly weaker without Attack investment, and requires Earthquake or Hammer Arm to deal reliable damage. Toxic can be used over Thunder Wave to cripple Slowking and Lanturn, Rest can be used with cleric support to restore Regirock's health, while Protect can be used to make Hi Jump Kick users, such as Medicham, take heavy recoil damage.

As a defensive Pokemon, Regirock appreciates Pokemon that can switch into its weaknesses. Grass-types, such as Tangrowth and Lilligant, are great choices as they switch into Grass-, Water-, and Ground-type moves with ease. Altaria is an uncommon partner, but it appreciates Stealth Rock to score additional KOs. Clefable can support Regirock with Wish and Heal Bell, but they share a weakness to Fighting-type attacks. Cofagrigus and Dusknoir are immune to Fighting-type attacks, can block Rapid Spin, and can soften physical attackers with Will-O-Wisp. Switching into Spikes and Stealth Rock will wear Regirock down slowly, so make sure you have a Rapid Spin user to let it switch in repeatedly.

[SET]
name: Sunny Day
move 1: Sunny Day
move 2: Stealth Rock
move 3: Stone Edge
move 4: Fire Punch / Explosion
item: Heat Rock
ability: Clear Body
nature: Impish
evs: 252 HP / 128 Atk / 128 Def
[SET COMMENTS]

Two of the biggest threats to sun teams are Entei's ExtremeSpeed and Honchkrow's Sucker Punch. Thanks to its resistance to ExtremeSpeed and ability to take on any Honchkrow set, Regirock is a valuable Sunny Day supporter. Not only does it summon Sunny Day, Regirock sets up Stealth Rock, deals large amounts of damage with Stone Edge, and Explodes once its job is done. That's not all—Regirock actually benefits from the sun as well. In sun, Fire Punch gains a nifty power boost, while Regirock's Water-type weakness is somewhat alleviated, allowing it to take on +2 Gorebyss and live to tell the tale.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Again, the HP and Defense EVs ensure Regirock is never 2HKOed by mixed Honchkrow's Superpower. 128 Attack EVs give Regirock some offensive presence, but these can be moved into Special Defense for additional bulk. Earthquake can be used to hit Fighting-types such as Medicham neutrally, while Toxic can be used to cripple Tangrowth and Lanturn. Heat Rock is the item of choice as it prolongs the sun; no other item is recommended.

As this set is designed to work on a Sunny Day team, Chlorophyll users obviously make great teammates. Victreebel and Tangrowth are two offensive behemoths under the sun, while Shiftry, Exeggutor, and Vileplume, are other options. Fire-types, such as Moltres and Typhlosion, appreciate the 50% power boost and have access to SolarBeam, while the ever-so-gimmicky Castform can change its type. Of course, Regirock needs support of its own, as its lack of recoverygives it a limited lifespan, making Uxie an excellent teammate and additional Sunny Day supporter. Leafeon has access to Wish and Heal Bell to support Regirock, while its Chlorophyll and Leaf Guard abilities enable it to take advantage of the sun.

[Other Options]

Thanks to its high Attack and decent STAB, Regirock can viably use a Choice Band, but it is better off as a supporter. Rock Polish can raise Regirock's abysmal Speed to usable levels, but Regirock doesn't have the immediate power of sweepers like Aggron for such a set to be effective. Curse can be used to boost Regirock's Attack and Defense, but Regirock's common weaknesses make this difficult to pull off. A combination of Substitute and Focus Punch is an option, but it's largely outclassed by Hammer Arm. Body Slam has a nifty paralysis rate, but doesn't receive STAB and provides little in terms of coverage. Finally, Counter can surprise powerful physical attackers such as Honchkrow, while Gravity makes Levitators and Flying-types prone to Earthquake and Spikes.

[Checks and Counters]

Most Fighting-types can set up on Regirock that lack Earthquake, but none of them appreciate paralysis. Gallade, Poliwrath, Medicham, and Hitmonlee can hit Regirock for massive damage and leave it in pieces. Gligar is immune to Earthquake and Thunder Wave, takes little damage from Regirock's STAB, and has access to Toxic and Taunt to cripple Regirock. Dusknoir and Cofagrigus take pitiful damage from any of Regirock's attacks and burn it with Will-O-Wisp. Uxie can set up Stealth Rock and cripple Regirock with status, while Tangrowth can drain its health with Leech Seed and batter it with Power Whip. Rhydon can switch into any of Regirock's attacks and threaten it with STAB Earthquake, Claydol completely shuts down all Regirock, and Ferroseed can set up entry hazards to its heart's content. Almost anything with a decent Defense stat that doesn't mind paralysis can check Regirock. Powerful special attackers with Water- or Grass-type attacks will deal massive damage to Regirock, making Sceptile, Sharpedo, Omastar, and Lilligant excellent Pokemon to have on your side.

[Unreleased]

Regirock receives Sturdy as its Dream World ability. This is only a minor upgrade over Clear Body, as there isn't much in RU that can OHKO Regirock to begin with, but it's still an improvement. As long as the battlefield is free from entry hazards, Regirock can use Sturdy to work as an emergency check to Pokemon such as Sceptile and Sharpedo, surviving a hit and replying with Thunder Wave or Drain Punch. This gives Sturdy more utility than Clear Body, which rarely comes into play at all except to nullify Intimidate from Qwilfish.
