Oh, ha trust me bro. I'll record every tid bit. You should see my "normal RNG" notes and my HG/SS ones! xD

My basic plan is to do 50+ simply SRing, then holding down the A with Turbo Equipped on the fastest setting, finding the seed and frame. Then doing 50+ on the medium setting, then 50+ on the slowest setting. Then I'll go back and look for patterns, and maybe do more from there varying my button presses or whatever. It's still an assumption right now, but I believe that the turbo setting could give me very consistent times/presses.

I really put a lot of faith in Syrex's words though, cuz I've actually seen with my own eyes the results of his efforts...

I may have actually seen said notes, mattj, but it has been a while since I have read the RNG Research thread, so I do not recall any specific users' information. I look forward to any results you can produce, even if I am not able to comment upon them punctually.

Also, I do not mean to discredit NeoSyrex or anything to that effect; I am simply saying that he did not specify how the button presses affect the RNG (he stated himself that he did not have conclusive results), and as such, we do not really have much of a foundation to build on. I did not mean to say that I doubted NeoSyrex's claims.

Speaking of NeoSyrex, upon checking the MediaFire link in the first post, it seems that it is dead. Fortunately, the program is still attached to the post for those who need to download it—I have removed the MediaFire link from the post to avoid any confusion.

I understand and THANK YOU SO MUCH for linking that in the post. I just downloaded it today and when I saw the mediafire download wasn't there I just about crapped my pants!! Thanks bro.

Hopefully my friend'll have the cart cleared early this week so I can get started.

It's been a while since I've done consistent seed hunting but I tried chrish's timing, but I can't get it exactly like before. The journal seems to last longer than the 80 beats prescribed ihis method. Is it possible for the duration of the journal to change?

WOOOOOOT!!!

I think I just found an EXTREMELY EASY AND ACCURATE WAY TO CONSISTENTLY HIT A SEED in FR/LG!!! (granted I don't know what seed it is yet, or how to pick what seed you want, but it seems I can whatever I'm hitting fairly consistently...)

I've already hit the same Nature/Stat Zapdos several times now, but as I was only testing it to see if it would work in practice I haven't any serious notes. I'll start it in earnest now and post the info as soon as I get it compiled...

This is interesting I look forward to your notes, everytime I try and attempt this comething comes up hopefully this saturday I can give this a shot as I await HG/SS on Sunday

It involves using a GBA player for your game Cube (this little black thing made by nintendo to play GBA games on your tV through your gamecube and a Gamestop GC controller with a setable turbo function. I'm kinda pressed for time with church in like an hour (eat/shower/shave/dress/bye) but out of 12 Soft Resets I got the exact same nature/stat Zapdos 3 different sets of times. That is, I got one pair that was the same, then another pair that was the same later, then yet another pair that was the same. That's not terribly consistent yet, but I"m just getting the hang of this. At this rate I can see myself getting the same seed... 1/4 or 1/5 times eventually once I get used to it.

After I get more data I'll post...

Well based on your previous post I assumed that was your method, I'll just be using a plain old DS :/ hopefully I can hit similar spreads as well

It's far to late to even consider breaking down this data, much less posting it tonight, but needless to say, I did 50 Soft Resets and got some very encouraging Data. Out of those, I only had like 2 Zapdos that didn't repeat, and many of them repeated multiple times. For instance (lets see...) I got...
Hardy-151/100/92/137/104/119 7 times
Docile-158/95/100/130/97/108 6 times
Mild-163/95/81/148/1099/105 6 times
and several others repeatedly (2 to 5 times each)
7 out of 50 times! That's 14% of the time! And who knows, I could refine my methods a bit more and get even better results! I must have missed it, but didn't someone already try tapping to a metronome? What kind of results did they get?

Anyway, I'll see about typing it all up and breaking it down and maybe even getting a short vid up on youtube so y'all can see it for yourselves, but that's tomorrow. Night y'all. :P

First of all, CONGRATS!! I have to admit I was almost skeptical of your methods, but it seemed a lot quicker than watching a blinking metronome, which was what I was doing to no avail. And yes, chrish posted his findings on page 2 of this thread, and found 2 or 3 repeats, but I believe you have found the most consistent results. Good luck in your future endeavors with this topic, and thank you SO much.

oH noEs!! it's teh dreaded
INFO DUMP!!! =0

I wanted to see if it was possible to get the same spread on Zapdos with any sort of consistency on my Fire Red Cartridge. I knew from past experience SRing (in an old Leaf Green cart along with Blue, Yellow, Pearl, Platinum, and Heart Gold) that getting the same spread without conscious effort was next to impossible (never once in my experience).

So. Here's what I did. I used...
1) a legit (far as I know) Fire Red cartridge
2) a Nintendo Game Cube
3) a Nintendo GameBoy Player
4) a Gamestop Game Cube Controller with a programable Turbo Speed Setting
To play my Cart on my TV (it's just easier on the eyes, and doesn't waste batteries. :P)

I began this experiment as so: Saved in the power plant right in front of Zapdos.
Turbo set for A on fastest setting.
Gonna press RESET and hold down A at same time.
Hold A till fighting Zapdos.
Masterball it.
Record Nature/Stats.
Wash, Rinse, Repeat...

Here were the results that I got over 59 Soft Resets:
Code:
Impish - 158 / 95 / 100 / 130 / 97 / 108
Quirky - 161 / 107 / 96 / 136 / 104 / 114

Noticed that I may be pressing A at different times because RESETTING takes a moment to take effect (*later found out it doesn't take effect till you let go of it). Gonna start holding A the moment the gleam of light touches the "B" in GameBoy and it goes "Di-Ing!!".

Hardy - 151 / 100 / 92 / 137 / 104 / 119
Careful - 153 / 110 / 92 / 126 / 111 / 112

Impish - 157 / 97 / 101 / 122 / 97 / 107
Impish - 157 / 97 / 101 / 122 / 97 / 107 Weird thing here. I screwed up and let off A before Zapdos, in the space between "Continue" and "in game". I noticed just as I saw Zapdos, and held A again, and still got an immediate repeat?!
Docile - 158 / 108 / 95 / 132 / 106 / 105
Timid - 150 / 86 / 104 / 132 / 108 / 118
Hardy - 160 / 106 / 92 / 137 / 98 / 119

Docile - 158 / 108 / 95 / 132 / 106 / 105

Have gotten acceptably consistent results from holding A the moment the gleam touched "B" and it went "Di-Ing!!". Gonna "try" holding down A and THEN SRing...

Mild - 162 / 108 / 82 / 144 / 106 / 108
Docile - 158 / 108 / 95 / 132 / 106 / 105

Docile - 164 / 102 / 93 / 133 / 109 / 113
Adamant - 163 / 117 / 97 / 121 / 102 / 119
Impish - 158 / 95 / 100 / 130 / 97 / 108

Lax - 160 / 101 / 110 / 141 / 85 / 106

Got an acceptable number of repeats off that. Gonna “try” to Press and hold A the very moment I let off RESET and see what that gives…

59 total soft resets
22 different spreads
12 spreads repeated once or more
10 spreads did not repeat (within the 59 soft resets)
49 of the 59 soft resets (83%) yielded a repeated spread

So, what did I learn?

As NeoSyrex already stated, it is completely possible to get the same exact spread on a Legendary poke in FR/LG. At this point, I assume that means I was hitting the same seed. In fact, it very well could be that I hit the same seed many many times than it appears and that some of the repeated spreads were frames 1/2/3/etc...

Granted, I used a Gamecube Controler with a Turbo function for extremely consistent BPMs, but looking back on my experience RNGing in Pearl / Plat / Heart Gold I believe it's just as possible by tapping consistently to the beat of a metronome, or possibly even mashing A (if you're reeeeeeeeally friggin consistent?!).

I'm gonna try this again, but with the Turbo on the slowest setting this time. I "think" it might actually give me more consistent results than the fastest setting. The fastest setting was waaaaay too fast for me to keep track of, and it may have actually been signaling A more quickly than the Fire Red Cart could handle/receive.

Oh, and check back later. I recorded 9 SRs over 10 minutes (just the actual gameplay while it was playing on my TV) and am in the process of editing it and putting it up on Youtube so y'all can actually see what I did. If you'll notice from that list of the last 9 SRs, I got a good repeat on SR #s 2 and 3, and pretty much the rest were repeats of SRs from before too. I'll edit the vid in when I get it.

PLEASE! LOOK OVER THIS INFO. TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK.
WHAT COULD I TEST NEXT?
HOW DOES IT LOOK?
WHAT'S THE NEXT STEP IN ABUSING FOR NATURE/IVS?
HOW DO I DETERMINE WHAT "SEEDS" I HIT, SO I CAN BEGIN SHOOTING FOR TARGET FRAMES??

Well atm the best we have is
1)RNG reporter's IVs to PID function,
2) a reverse RNG formula Mingot posted here http://www.smogon.com/forums/showpost.php?p=2305664&postcount=32
3) Neo Syrex's program to help in finding the seed you hit, just find your zapdos IVs and PID and use the above tools to help in finding the seed but its recommended you use the other two as RNG reporter's IVs to PID doesn't give the correct seed and perhaps next time recording the IVs of zapdos may be better if possible
but over all well done in recording your findings, good luck

Okay cool. Since he's at L50, and there were only 22 spreads, that really isn't too bad. I'll get to work on that...

Oh, but that Reverse RNG formula makes no sense to me. @_@

And thanks.

[edit]
wow. just wow. didn't realize that you couldn't get exact IVs at L50. dang. ouch. Before I try again, what would I need to do to to get exact IVs on Zapdos? Would dumping like 1 of each vitamin in and recording his stats before and after be enough?

At least this wasn't a total waste. It proved it's (very) possible to hit repeated spreads.

well to check the IVs perhaps a rarecandy or two could be used if I recall thats what i used when I was SR my old zapdos in LG and as for the forumla this post gives an example of how to use it http://www.smogon.com/forums/showpost.php?p=2305813&postcount=34 or you can contact mingot or perhaps omegadonut can explain it in more detail to you

thanks so much unfortunately i've never done any math with hex before. i can accurataly hit certain seeds find each p i d find a target spread and time it to hit it but. . . I don't think i understand that formula to find the initial seed. he i can post the p i d's for the top couple spreads could someone run them through the equation for me?

better yet is there a calculator or program out there that would easily handle that formula? even though i don't understand it i'm pretty sure i could handle plugging the numbers in not unlike r n g reporter. sorry for the double post i'm on my phone and can't edit.

I think neosyrex's frlg seed finder does just that. In the meantime, you really should how to do math in binary; binary lends itself to programming, and converting from binary to hex is easy shmeasy. The pid article in the in game section on smogon has a quick tutorial on bin and hex, and understanding how the pid is created, and what it means. It's worth a read, especially since you've collected so much consistent data yourself.

Oi i'm such a noo b. I skippe d right over that part. I'll go back and read that tonight. so for steve's program you just find the p i d from the i v's and nature and put it in and it gives you the starting seed? if so that sounds easy. THANKS!

it doesn't work like that, you have to calculate your seed using the formula, enter that seed into NeoSyrex (or Steve in your case) program and it will give the correct seed most likely

Oh thank God. After several days of trying, I finally got the video software to work (slow computer is exceedingly slow). I should have the footage of those last 9 SRs up on youtube in a bit, and I'll edit it into my big post.

Oh, and Nexus, thank you for pointing that out. Syrex's description was a bit confusing, I'm glad you understood (find a seed to find a seed... what?!)

I'm going to go back, get a couple rare candies and find the PID's on the top couple of spreads (those are the only consistent ones anway). I might need some help with that formula, but I'll get a hold of Mingot on IRC and we'll chat.

Edited in the Vid of the last 9 Soft Resets, proving it is possible to get repeat spreads. Also, it might give y'all a better idea of exactly what I was doing.

Now off to get the PIDs for the top few...

[edit]
Weird...
I had to go get some rare candies in order to check the IVs and just realized 3 wasn't enough to get accurate results from Metalkid's, so I need to go get some vitamins too. HOWEVER, I've only done 5 SRs, but I haven't hit any old spreads yet. I'm gonna do another 20ish and see if they've somehow changed since my last save...

Hi mattj. Sorry I have not had time to reply to your experiment, but I have now read over your results and watched your video, so I can comment on this development.

First of all, please allow me to say that it was previously known from chrish's research that it is possible to hit spreads repeatedly through repeated timing. On the other hand, your method with the "turbo" Gamestop controller has produced a far higher ratio of duplicates than chrish's metronome afforded (which is not terribly surprising, as a mechanical process is doing some of the work, as opposed to purely human reaction time).

Code:
Impish - 157 / 97 / 101 / 122 / 97 / 107 Weird thing here. I screwed up and let off A before Zapdos, in the space between "Continue" and "in game". I noticed just as I saw Zapdos, and held A again, and still got an immediate repeat?!
Could you elaborate more on this anomaly? From what I understand, you stopped pressing A as the game began, but when you saw Zapdos, you pressed it again? It is possible that you let up during the brief period when the game loads, when button presses are not registered—if not, this is puzzling, as the RNG supposedly advances.

HOWEVER, I've only done 5 SRs, but I haven't hit any old spreads yet. I'm gonna do another 20ish and see if they've somehow changed since my last save...
This could be nothing, but it is worth noting that there was speculation early on as to whether something in the save file affected the RNG. Research conducted by chrish indicated that the play time recorded in the save file does not have an effect on the RNG. However, it might be possible that something else does. . . maybe changing the events displayed before the game starts effects the RNG in some way?

One thing which I think would be interesting is if you attempted to pursue a spread that occurs after a short wait—maybe five seconds or so to begin with—to see how easy it is to hit a spread that does not occur right after the game launches. By finding the frame that the spread occurs on, you will also help test the advancement of the RNG (supposedly an effective 120 frames per second where Zapdos is). If you are able to consistently hit a spread through this method, you could also try opening and closing the menu to try hitting an even-numbered frame, and see if it works about the same. To the best of my knowledge, neither of these two things (even/odd frames and later spreads) have been tested in great detail recently.

Also, thank you for making a very detailed post. I will link to it in the first post (as I have done with chrish's research) so that anyone who wishes to refer to it will be able to do so without searching through the thread.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah I saw Chrish's results, plus Steve (Syrex) told me at Worlds (afterwards) that he was able to hit seeds multiple times, it's just that people on IRC/etc still don't believe it's possible. Hopefully the video will end that.

Oh, yeah, thanks for noticing that. I thought it was weird too. But all it really was was that as soon as I pressed "Continue", I accidentally let off A, which stopped tapping automatically. Then for the brief few moments when the screen turned black I was not pressing A. Then I saw Zapdos and was like "OH CRAP!!" and held down A again. Surprisingly, it came out as an immediate repeat. I had been paying very very close attention to the moment that the game goes "DING!!" right when you press A to begin battling, ( I use that sound to time my DPPtHG/SS RNG as well) and I am 100% certain it was still at the exact same moment as when I held down the A button the whole time. All I think that means is that there's a brief period of time when the game is still loading (possibly...first save data, then graphics, then the game "really starts") where it doesn't acnowledge/accept button presses. It's probably too busy doing other stuff.

Oh, and about the odd results I just got. Well... What happened is that I thought I wouldn't need any candies to level Zapdos up anymore in order to obtain accurate IV's on him, but after writing down all those spreads... yeah.. found out I needed them x_x So, I went out, found 3 rare candies, went straight back to Zapdos, and saved AGAIN. However, I quickly noticed that I wasn't getting the same consistent spreads as before. I was getting NEW consistent spreads. Now, as far as I remember, and I wasn't paying overly close attention because I did not expect this, (but will in the future), the ONLY things I did was, fly around, find the candies, and resave in front of Zapdos. If that's so, it COULD be that the amount of time in your save file DOES have some impact on what spreads you get (and I guess what seeds then too).

Here are my recent 30 Soft Resets from today. I used the same Controler on the same setting that I used to get my consistent results from yesterday. However, I got new, different, consistent results.

I would take the time to break it down like last time, but I quickly found out that in order to obtain the accurate IVs that I want, I need to go get some vitamins... which may throw off all these results anyway. I'm just posting them here for the community to look over in case they notice anything. They're just about as consistent as last time, just new spreads.

Oh, and some very good news! My bud Misdreavus happens to have a FR/LG cart and a Gameboy player too! He's picking up a Turbo Controler just like mine so we can try to verify each other's results on completely different carts!!

Just my thoughts here,
1)it looks like the time played may have some impact (though it obviously could have been something else)
2)I'm going to start paying attention to how the "recap/journal thing" works, although if you watched the vid it flies through it at an incredible clip!
3)As soon as I get my vitamins, I'll start recording PIDs from now on.

I've watched this thread for a long time, and I wanted to SR for a good charmander in my new FR, So I figured i could help out with the research going on.

What I did:
1. Set the metronome to 120 BPM with eighth notes on (i.e. effectively 240 BPM) in 2/2 Time
2. SR on a first beat
3. Wait one full beat (2 clicks by eighth note count) before pressing A in time to the eight notes

So out of 36 calibration Soft resets there were 2 pairs of duplicates. Not bad.

Around here I did a little bit of experimenting; I turned on the 16th note feature and tried to sync my button presses down with the eigth notes and up with the 16ths.
It didn't work out great, as the synchronization was very difficult to keep up with.
After that failed, I decided I had enough background data to start just resetting period (Back at the same type as where i started).

The spreads I got repeats of are here:

8 Sassy 19 / 10 / 9 / 12 / 11 / 10 / M Duplicates
10 Impish 19 / 11 / 9 / 9 / 11 / 12 / M Duplicates
21 Bold 19 / 9 / 11 / 11 / 11 / 12 / M Duplicates
26 Hasty 19 / 9 / 11 / 10 / 13 / M Duplicates
44 Mild 19 / 10 / 9 / 12 / 10 / 11 Duplicates
63 Brave 20 / 12 / 10 / 11 / 10 / 10 / M Triplets (!)
64 Sassy 19 / 10 / 9 / 11 / 11 / 10 / M Duplicates

Out of approximately 100 resets (including the SRing for duplicates) there were 6 pairs and 1 triplet of repeat spreads.
While this isn't the most impressive data, I was able to hit one spread 3 separate times, on a DS to boot. I'd be happy to help test anything more that needs doing, although it won't be charmanders on FR anymore. (I was suckered into a hasty 22 - 29 / 25 / 29 / 25 / 23 / 28 - 29 one, which I'll PID check once I get all the IVs down)

One thing I noticed that might be important:
Frames seem to be much easier to hit than seeds.
How I figured this out:when you start up FR it has the "record of your adventure" black and white scenes. When Testing with eigth notes, I found that I would always scroll through the "records" part at the same rate, yet end up with a multitude of different spreads.

I also have a question that needs answering:
Does the length of time you spend on the introduction sequence (with nidorino vs gengar) influence which seed you get?

Nice work! 100 SRs! Good job! The more the merrier! At L5 without rare candies or vitamins it really is hard to tell if those really are the exact same IVs, but they could be. I'm still having trouble getting accurate IVs on this Zapdos at L50 with 1 of each vitamin AND 3 rare candies *sigh* Gonna try 2 of each vitamin, then 3 candies (writing down the stats at each point and plugging them into metalkids).
