Rock Arceus (Analysis)

[Overview]

The Creator rises out of the depths of the earth and take on the very qualities of the rocks themselves, from the hardest obsidian to the smoothest alabaster. Sharp stones rain upon the hides of all those who dare oppose the mineral deity, as summoning the might of Gaia is but a trifle for this incarnation of Arceus. Those weak of faith will have you believe that Rock Arceus is prone to too many elements and thus an inferior forme, but rest assured that once he harnesses a few boosts, The Creator shall exact his revenge upon all. Underestimate him at your own peril.

move 4: Recover
item: Stone Plate
evs: 100 HP / 100 Def / 100 SpA / 100 SpD / 100 Spe
nature: Timid

[Set Comments]

Like all Arceus types, Rock Arceus can run a very threatening Calm Mind set. Rock Arceus is also one of the few Arceus types that can beat Ho-Oh with a Calm Mind set, thanks to its Rock-type Judgment. However, due to its weakness's to common types such as Water, Ground, and Fighting, Rock Arceus can't tank very well. Despite this, with Calm Mind, Rock Arceus is still an offensive threat.Arceus's +1 Grass Knot can OHKO an offensive Groudon, while OHKOing support Groudon after prior damage, who would otherwise stop Rock Arceus cold.

Judgment is obviously the primary attacking move due to Arceus receiving STAB boost on it. Calm Mind is the crux of the set allowing Arceus to boost its Special Attack and Special Defense. Judgment's damage output may seem weak at first, but when used in tandem with its bulkand Recover, Arceus can easily obtain multiple Calm Mind boosts. Rock Arceus has two primary options for the last spot: Grass Knot and Substitute. Grass Knot is used to hit Groudon and Kyogre for super effective damage, while Substitute is used to block status and allow Rock Arceus to beat Blissey. Ice Beam can be used over Grass Knot to score an OHKO on Garchomp, while still hitting Groudon hard; however, Rock Arceus will have problems with bulky Kyogre. Fire Blast can also work over Grass Knot to hit Steel-types for super effective damage while still doing respectable damage to Groudon.

[Additional Comments]

Latios and Latias can outpace Rock Arceus and will win in a Calm Mind war. Garchomp can outspeed Arceus and can hit with a super effective STAB Earthquake(it would be good to mention a remedy for all of the above, otherwise it's just listing counters which doesn't belong in AC). Choice Scarf Kyogre can switch in and use Water Spout or Surf for devastating effects, and bulky Kyogre can pose a threat even though it takes a hefty 61.3% - 72.3% from a boosted Grass Knot. Latios and Latiascan take Water attacks from Kyogre aimed at Arceus, so they can make good teammates. Specially Defensive Skarmory can phaze Arceus away, but it will take a big hitfrom Judgement. Wobbufett can make Arceus's set up easier, and it can trap Scarfed Pokemon who attempt to KO Rock Arceus as well. Dual Screens can aid in setting up too, allowing Rock Arceus to obtain multiple Calm Mind boosts with ease. Spikes and Stealth Rock can help secure some KOs, so a Spiker is recommended. Forretress and Skarmory do the job, particularly Forretress, who can use Rapid Spin to remove the enemies entry hazards. Both of these Pokemon make excellent choices since Rock Arceus can switch into the Fire-type attacks aimed at them. Scizor has Bullet Punch, making it a threat to Arceus even though Arceus can hit it for plenty of damage. Partners such as Dialga and Heatran can easily switch into Bullet Punch and immediately threaten Scizor. Fighting Arceus and Lucario both resist Rock Arceus’s Judgment and hit it with their respective STAB attacks. Giratina-O can switch into these Fighting-Type moves without worry thanks to its immunity. While Skymin can’t switch in, its STAB Seed Flares do an enormous amount of damage even after a Calm Mind boost. In addition, Blissey can also counter this set should Rock Arceus not use Substitute.

name: Swords Dance
move 1: Swords Dance
move 2: Stone Edge
move 3: Earthquake
move 4: ExtremeSpeed / Recover
item: Stone Plate
evs: 100 HP / 100 Atk / 100 Def / 100 SpD / 100 Spe
nature: Jolly

[Set Comments]

Rock Arceus has the potential to be a menacing Swords Dance sweeper. Stone Edge and Earthquake offer excellent coverage together, hitting nearly every Pokemon in the metagame for at least neutral damage. A Jolly nature is needed to outpace any positive base 90 Speed Pokemon or higher.

Swords Dance is the crux of the set, allowing Arceus to receive boosts in its attack, while Stone Edge is the primary attacking move due to STAB. Stone Edge’s damage output may seem lackluster at first, but Arceus's bulkand Recover, allow it to obtain multiple Attack boosts with Swords Dance. Earthquake rounds off its near perfect coverage by hitting most Pokemon who resist Stone Edge. ExtremeSpeed is a good option as it allows Arceus to pick off faster Pokemon, while Recover can be used in the same spot in order to increase longevity. The last option to consider is Overheat, which can be used to fry Skarmory and Forretress, who can otherwise take several hits and lay downhazards.

[Additional Comments]

Garchomp outspeeds Arceus and can hit it with a super effective STAB Earthquake. Choice Scarf Kyogre can switch in and use Water Spout or Surf for devastating effects, while bulky Kyogre can pose a threat even though it takes a large amount of damage from a boosted Stone Edge. Latios and Latias are able to take Water attacks from Kyogre aimed at Arceus. Physically Defensive Skarmory can phazeArceus away after taking a considerable portion of damage from Stone Edge. Wobbufett makes setting up easier as well as trapping Scarfed Pokemon who attempt to KO Rock Arceus. Dual Screens can aid in setting up, allowing Rock Arceus to obtain multiple Stone Edge boosts with more ease.
Unlike the previous sets, this set takes a unique approach to using Rock Arceus. Many common switch ins to will struggle to deal with this set. For Instance, Kyogre and Groudon, Rock Arceus’s two most common switch ins, are hit hard with Grass Knot. A Speed-boosting nature is needed to outpace any positive base 90 Speed Pokemon or higher.

Stone Edge is the primary move due to STAB, and it hitsmany common Pokemon in the Uber environment for super effective damage. Fire Blast is used in order to hit Steel-types who otherwise resist the rest of Arceus’s moves. Earthquake is also an option to hit harder in the rain, but it causes Arceus to struggle with Bronzong, Skarmory and Forretress. Recover is used in the last spot into increase longevity. Dragon Claw can also be used in place of Stone Edge for a 100% accurate move to use against Dragon-type Pokemon; it also hits Palkia and Dialga for more damage. The issue with this though is that Pokemon such as Shaymin-S, Lugia, and especially Ho-Oh have a much easier time with Arceus.

[Team Options]

Rock Arceus greatly appreciates entry hazard support. Groudon, Skarmory, Mew, Deoxys, Dialga, Froslass, Heatran, and Forretress can all set up Stealth Rock or Spikes for Rock Arceus. Forretress is particularly helpful thanks to Rapid Spin, since Rock Arceus is greatly hindered by Toxic Spikes. Rock Arceus also appreciates Dual Screen and paralysis support to aid it in its setup. Lugia, Kyogre, Groudon, Dialga, and Jirachi are great users of Thunder Wave, while Jirachi can also use Body Slam to spread paralysis. On the other hand, Mewtwo, Uxie, Bronzong, and Latios are great users of Light Screen and Reflect.

Wobbuffet makes setting up easier as well as being able to trap Scarfed Pokemon who attempt to revenge Rock Arceus. Latios and Latias are able to take Water type attacks aimed at Arceus with ease, so they can make good teammates. Giratina-O can switch into Fighting and Ground type attacks aimed at Rock Arceus and Dialga and Heatran can switch into Steel Type attacks

[Optional Changes]

Refresh allows Arceus to rid itself of status such as poison and paralysis that could hinder a sweep. Arceus can also spread Poison around with Toxic, but it isn't recommended; Arceus has better things to do. Roar can allow Arceus to be an efficient phazer while wearing down its counters; it also gives Arceus a chance to win in a Calm Mind war when facing Latias and Latios. It is important that should you use Roar, entry hazards be used in conjunction with it. Reflect and Light Screen can be used to support teammates, but there are better Dual Screeners, and it wastes a precious moveslot. Arceus can also use Perish Song to put a timer on users of Calm Mindthat think they can set up, and it can also force switches.

[Counters]

Rock Arceus has quite a few counters that canstop it cold. Garchomp outspeeds Arceus and can hit with a super effective STAB Earthquake. Choice Scarf Kyogre can switch in and use Water Spout or Surf for devastating effects. Physically Defensive Skarmory can phaze Arceus away after taking a considerable portion of damage from Stone Edge. Scizor can Bullet Punch Arceus for a large amount of damage. Great Sage

Banned deucer.
I've used Substitute over the coverage attack on the Calm Mind set to great success, since Rock is one of those types that works well as a mono-attacker. I would argue that despite opening up to Groudon and Garchomp a bit, Substitute is the best option for Calm Mind. Also, I would relegate Ice Beam to Additional Comments, since Rock and Ice have rather redundant coverage. The only thing Ice Beam handles that Judgment and Grass Knot don't is Garchomp, since a neutral Judgment is only slightly less powerful than a 2x super-effective Ice Beam.

alright ill move IB to AC and run either GK/sub or vice versa

edit i put GK as the main slash but can go either way

I really like the idea of the mixed set because everything else thus far has just been a CM set, a support set, or an SD set, so the variation is nice. Skymin also needs to be mentioned in the counters section. Though it may not be able to switch in without fear, it can do huge amounts of damage with STAB seed flare as well as potentially undo the defensive aspect of your calm minds, making you easier to revenge kill.

Mention with Groudon's Drought, Water attacks wont hurt as much, a plus if packing Groudon, beyond just the Fire Blast boosts.

(Also it helps more than Sandstorm against Water moves since it's basically doubling its Defenses, while Sandstorm adds 50% to SpD only).

So it can take on Palkia's Hydro Pump & Aqua Tail, Lati@s' Surf, Kingdra's Waterfall/Hydro Pump, Manaphy's Surfs, etc.

Basically they will all do more damage with their own STAB Dragon moves or if they pack Grass Knot (Lati@s, Manaphy).

k thanks hhjj ill be sure to mention that stuff

and im also removing extremespeed off the Mixed set. a Unstabed, unboosted extremespeed does shit damage. i couldnt even KO a palkia at 25% -.-

Ill put recover as the main move but ill look into other potential moves that can fit the fourth slot

Sorry to double post, but i tested Mixed Rock and i was actually happy with its results, on PO it did quite a good job at luring many of its counters and took hits quite well even without the CM Boost (even better with SS up). Stone Miss was good stab coverage even though it did miss alot.

"The normally calm face of the Alpha Pokémon is overtaken with a stern, stony stare when it wields the Stone Plate. Despite the many vulnerabilities of the type, this mountain-hewn Arceus is capable of running not just a typical Calm Mind or Swords Dance set, but also a dangerous mixed set which ruins many of its typical counters. Beware, reader, of Rock Arceus, for it is as unpredictable as the mountain path, where a wrong turn could mean your end."

I figure that I could try my hand at "epic overviews" wherever one isn't already in-stone. *rimshot*

Metagross should recieve a mention as a Counter/check to the CM set. If Arceus isn't running Fire Blast, Gross walks all over it with Bullet Punch, Earthquake, Meteor Mash, ect...

Also, there were numerous spacing problems.
