Pet Mod Roulettemons 2 (Now Playable!)

Venompir: Wow this thing looks obnoxious. Worth noting I guess that Hustle brings its Attack up to exactly 100 funny enough, which is really nothing to write home about for that ability especially. Octolock is all it can really do and we already have Flamester where stallbreaking with Octolock is one of its biggest roles, so I've gotta ask - do we really wanna encroach that with something that looks far more obnoxious? Looks like a big matchup fish, I'm not a fan.

Quickigator: I see this thing going one of two ways - either it's too weak to do anything off of its low Sp. Atk and it ends up being underpowered, or its low base Sp. Atk isn't enough to get in the way and it ends up being way too efficient and unhealthy of a cleaner. I can't stress enough how dumb something with Innards Out can be for anything with a half decent HP stat, it forces lose-lose situations for offensive Pokemon very easily and that'd especially be the case when this thing's going to consistently be able to get to +1 with such a huge Speed tier. I'm honestly leaning towards this thing being undertuned but will be voting against it either way.

Rosedox: This thing puts Cateloon out of a job, no thanks. Imagine if every Grass we get from here on out is either too similar to an existing one or ends up unbalanced.

Coyotail: Is it just me or does Encore + Dragon Dance + ability-based trapping seem concerning for this thing? If this thing finds any opportunity to come in on like a Radimite using Spikes for example then it'll have no trouble getting to +6 Atk/Speed. The opportunity cost of running Encore might be too high since you've only got two other moveslots but the risk reward is huge. If someone argues against that set then this thing'll be fine for me, lacks immediate power and there's very few fat mons that are passive in this so it might face issues there even if it has the coverage. Worth mentioning that this might actually appreciate Covert Cloak, its special bulk is good enough so the most it cares about from Radimite (its biggest target rn but not the only one it'll have) is the secondary effects from Chilling Water and Sludge Bomb.

Radiore: Of course something this fast ends up being the one Pokemon so far that has the ability Stall lmao. This thing's bulk evens out to be about average actually, similar to but slightly lower than Mew level. Problem is that this thing's typing gives it zero relevant resists and makes it weak to Stealth Rock, forcing it off of Leftovers and making it prone to Knock Off + chip damage. If this thing had hazard setting/removal or a better typing then it'd be cool, its bulk is just enough to get by and access to Clear Smog, Dragon Tail, Flip Turn and Wish is all fun, but with a Pokemon so prone to being worn down without any good resists it'll struggle to find a place on most teams. Worth note that I deliberately left Revival Blessing OUT of the legal moves so this thing will not see any Assist + Revival Blessing cheese. Also Defog does not check accuracy so Wonder Skin doesn't have that going for it. Voting no even if it might end up doing okay in the final meta, you could do a lot worse than this.

Pretty disappointing slate here overall, don't know if I'll end up voting for any of these but could very easily see my opinion being swayed on Coyotail or maaaybe Radiore. Really wish Radiore in particular ended up being better than it was though.

Venompir:
  • This is an interesting trapper, but it's pretty one-dimensional. It's more defensive than Flamester and can't really do anything besides trap, but it plays pretty differently too.
  • The main trick to it is to stall with poison and King's Shield after trapping. A Dark move can let it get neutral coverage against things it can't trap or poison. Spectral Thief does the same while dissuading setup, but it's pretty weak too.
  • I actually think it fills a similar defensive role to Radimite, as it has similar bulk and defensive profile. It offers a lot less in terms of utility, and with its narrow niche it seems like it would be really difficult to justify putting on a team.
  • Not only is it one-dimensional, but it's also predictable. It seems like it can be easy to play around if you know what it does. It could actually be pretty good within its one niche, but if it isn't I think it would be basically dead on arrival.
Quickigator:
  • Innards Out is such a volatile ability on anything with a decent HP stat, but Quickigator's good defenses eat into its ability to trade off against weaker attacks. 86 HP is still more than enough to really punish those that take it out. I don't think it would invest in HP though, but it technically has the stuff for a bulky setup set that would deliver even more back.
  • The rest of it is pretty optimized but it's held back by a weirdly low Special Attack stat. It's still got good enough speed to run Modest, Grim Neigh as a snowballing option, and No Retreat + being a Ghost type is just really solid for a sweeper.
  • Also it has recovery. With amazing bulk for an offensive mon after a No Retreat, it'll be really tough to take out with attacks.
  • I think the main issue for it as a sweeper would be the poor special attack making it difficult to get an initial kill to get Grim Neigh going, even after a No Retreat boost. Because of this we might see Clangorous Soul sets as well since those can get multiple boosts giving it the power to break through. These multiple boosts make Grim Neigh less necessary, but they also eat into the pool of HP for Innards Out if you're running it. On the flip side it also has a consistent means of healing off the Clangorous Soul recoil. Again, this would be really tough to take out with attacks.
  • I have no idea how to evaluate this mon.
Rosedox:
  • Not a bad mon, but I agree that it overshadows and competes with Cateloon a lot. In a vacuum I think it's a decent if uninteresting pick. Defog and Ceaseless Edge are good utility moves, and of course Spore is excellent. While it has an arguably better typing and movepool than Cateloon, it is less bulky, and having a Bug typing can be surprisingly decent at taking on strong Fighting attacks and dissuading opposing Grass types from switching in on Spore. All things considered this would be a no vote just because of the established context.
Coyotail:
  • My initial reactions to this thing were that it wouldn't keep up with an average monotype, a pretty low Attack stat for an offensive mon with only an 80 base power STAB, and pretty bad physical bulk leaving it easily revenge killed. After giving it some more thought, I think it actually has a lot of merits, even if it's not a perfect pick.
  • Something that was not immediately obvious to me was how this mon's strongest attack is actually Gigaton Hammer instead of one of its STABs. Steel / Dark as neutral coverage, potentially backed by Fighting is super solid, and the fact that Gigaton Hammer comes with a pretty significant downside makes it interesting in practice.
  • It can also run Adamant pretty easily, remedying its power issue even more. Jolly is probably better to at least tie with Elemadillo and itself generally while also beating Spidmaton and Vibraash, but it's a nice option.
  • Going into the role of Magnet Pull on this mon, it seems pretty incidental. In most cases it would probably be to revenge trap CB Spidmaton. This is pretty relevant actually as CB Spidmaton is currently the only relevant priority user, so removing it opens up the path for a DD sweep later. Encore trapping seems fairly incidental, but Coyotail can get away with two-move coverage. It seems tough in practice though. I think a Radimite user wouldn't use passive moves so freely if there's a Coyotail on the opposing team.
  • Covert Cloak on Coyotail in order to win against Sludge Bomb and Chilling Water seems like a case of overspecialization to me. In order to make use of it, you would need to run Slack Off on it too, so you're down to two-move coverage again. Slack Off is probably usable against other weak special attackers, but it's fairly bad otherwise, and more concerningly, Radimite can adapt to this set a lot easier. Uninvested Crabhammer from Radimite is a guaranteed 2HKO, and Baneful Bunker is more difficult to punish when you can't Encore it. In either case it can help create 50/50s, but in the case of the Encore set it could help stall out Encore PP if used at the right time.
  • If Coyotail does manage to get to +6, what is stopping it? Well, not much. I mentioned Spidmaton earlier, and that's the only priority user worth mentioning so far, but we could get more down the road. But I think the situations in which Coyotail could actually set up all the way would be somewhat rare. I think it's pretty dependant on how the meta develops, whether Radimite can afford to adapt to Coyotail, and the function of upcoming Steel-types we could get. For example, if the premiere defensive Steel-type was more vulnerable to Fighting, we could see CB Coyotail as a means of removing it and breaking cores with it. Radimite is actually in a privileged position, not being weak to anything Coyotail could run.
  • I still haven't decided on how I'll vote on this mon, might give it some more thought.
Radiore:
  • Before I noticed it had Wish, I thought it might be a usable revenge killer thanks to its great Speed. While it's got a very low Special Attack stat, it does have usable STABs and coverage, and as a speed king, it could run Specs while outspeeding everything. For bulkier threats it can't hit hard enough, it has Trick and Flip Turn to not turn over momentum. In general it can hit most of the offensive mons it outspeeds hard with Specs Power Gem which is enough to be a fine anti-offense mon.
  • There is a lot of bad qualities to this mon, though. Low special attack and the power of its STABs are not enough to make up for it, and its coverage options are weak too. Its STAB combo is okay (Rock is a good offensive type and neither of its STABs have immunities at least), but misses out on Steel and Fighting types which is a letdown. While its types are usable offensively, they are vulnerable to hazards which is horrible for a fast pivot. That said, there aren't many Stealth Rock users in this metagame yet, but it's still a big flaw. Also, its abilities don't really help it at all, being much too incidental.
  • The other path for this is a pivot with Wish that uses its insane HP to heal up partners. It's a cute idea, but it begs the question, what else would a Wish set do? It still has a bad defensive type, weak to hazards, vulnerable to status. Does it offer any other utility? Not really. Non-STAB scald and weak uninvested attacks are the best it can do. I think a cleric set on this is actually a huge trap.
  • Overall this mon is definitely a stinker. I don't really think what it can do is really interesting enough to consider personally.

Vigilcanth: It's alright. Can't really make use of Fairy Aura (probably wouldn't want to anyway). Does get recovery and some boosting options and is decently fast and pretty strong. Fighting/Ghost/Steel coverage is cool too.

Virtutric: Not sure how good Coil + Simple would be on a mon that is 4x weak to Ground and has poor coverage options and is also pretty slow. 167 Atk is very strong, so the poor coverage might not even matter if it can just chunk switch-ins. There's also Steelworker to boost Steel-type move damage to ridiculous levels. It's pretty bulky too.

Flazam: More hazard control is always welcome, but its weak to Rocks and 4x weak to Ground. It can threaten stuff out with Water coverage after a Rapid Spin and spread poison with Noxious Torque. Super Luck can cheese some critical hits too, helping to break through crit-me-not sweepers. Kind of sucks that we already have Vibraash, but I think it could be different enough to set itself apart.

Gnomleaf: Very mid stats, can't get Normal STAB and Refrigerate at the same time. 153 Speed with Coil + Fishious Rend might make it viable, and it can sustain itself with Wish. Unblockable Rapid Spin is cool, but overall kind of eh.

Flamianha: Bulk is the only thing going for it. It has two abilities that punishes the opponent for using contact moves, but then it has 53 Def. No reliable recovery, and utility options are limited. Soak + Apple Acid could be kind of funny to support its teammates. Not too sold on it.

Vigilcanth: It's typing is not stellar for a special attacker, but it gets one standout coverage move in Moongeist Beam. It also has Snipe Shot to target the SpD Fire types that we have. Its Spe is just enough to outspeed the fastest mons with Scarf + Timid, which is the best role I can see for it. There are a fair number of pokemon it can target with its STABS and coverage, and it also has Lunar Dance. That said, its STAB moves are really weak, and it doesn't have any sort of pivoting, so I think it will be awkward to use against a bulky team and will fail at lot of revenge kills if the target is not weakened.

Virtutric: This pokemon seems pretty broken, as its bulk and typing + Simple Coil will render it unkillable by all but strong Ground attacks, and it will proceed to Iron Tail everything. Iron Tail, Drill Run, and Coil would form the basis of a set. Octolock would mess up defensive counters such as Slowgast, while Beak Blast can burn some revenge killers like Huntar. Steelworker could be used to do more damage against Haze, Unaware, or in our case Opportunist pokemon, but I think Octolock serves that role better.

Flazam: This pokemon is very interesting although its stats are probably not enough for it to be very good. Despite having Fiery Dance on the special side, I think the immediate power of Super Luck + Blaze Kick and Stone Edge (both are high crit moves) probably suits its Speed tier better. Rapid Spin and Hone Claws / Sucker Punch are options on the physical side. Definitely a meme and probably not very good but it can hit pretty hard with its auto crit moves.

Gnomleaf: It does have a great physical movepool, with Fishious Rend and Refrigerate Explosion being a threat after a Coil, and Leaf Blade to threaten Water types that resist them. I don't know how much it can actually get done with its low attack, though, as it will need to set up or use Explosion to deal significant damage. Sun may also be pretty common, nerfing its only spammable attack.

Flamianha: Looks pretty useless, unfortunately.

Vigilcanth: Probably not that great unfortunately. Its STAB moves are weak as piss, it's going to struggle to break through stuff without Specs or without one of them outright being weak to the move it clicks, and neither Fighting nor Steel are super great to lock into. Another big victim of Roulettemons STAB moves. Just for reference even something like HP invested Marshasaur only barely gets 2HKOd by those and it's not that thing's job to take hits, let's imagine how this would match up against something like Bonedos that can see what it locks into and react accordingly. Its defensive profile and Speed both aren't half bad but aren't that good either. Another case of being so close yet so far.

Virtutric: Alright this thing has the absolute coolest set I've ever seen in Simple Power Herb Skull Bash with Body Press. It's a pretty stupid Pokemon though. Typing is amazing defensively, physical bulk is Mew level, and it has Simple Coil and Steelworker to choose from. Drill Run and either Noxious Torque or Megahorn for opposing Steels and Grasses respectively. It's also cool that this thing has Iron Tail with Coil sets but it's a no from me.

Flazam: Alright I'm glad this thing was pointed out to have Super Luck because I would be looking at this thing completely different otherwise. Super Luck + Scope Lens would guarantee crits for Blaze Kick, Stone Edge, and if you check the unviable moves, Aqua Cutter. I honestly think it'll drop Aqua Cutter for Bonemerang but it's an interesting option all the same. It has a comparable Speed tier and power level as Vigilcanth would with Choice Specs but is instead backed by a significantly better typing without being choice locked into something unfavorable. Sucker Punch makes it not worthless against offense and while the hazard weakness sucks, possibly enough for some to not like this thing, the typing isn't all bad since it does give it some handy resists to Fire, Ice, and Fairy to let it come in on some stuff. Maybe this is a hot take, I could easily see people disagreeing with me here, but this thing might not be too bad for the meta's current state.

Gnomleaf: Our second undertuned gnome. Fishious Rend looks decently enticing at first but this thing is very weak outside of that, since it has the trifecta of a not high Attack stat, subpar offensive typing, and the standard weak Roulettemons STABs. Note that physical Vaporwave doesn't have this issue because it has STAB Fishious Rend alongside two other very strong coverage moves that have incredible synergy. Had to bring up in case anyone notices that since it looks like an inconsistent thought process on paper. Compare that to Gnomleaf, where if anything resists Water, it completely gets blocked out, and Water resists aren't especially difficult to come by. Similar boat, Refrigerate Rapid Spin looks enticing as a utility option but again is not enough to carry it. Its defensive typing is dreadful and it doesn't have the stats or ability to carry it, so while this thing technically has "unblockable" hazard removal, it's going to match up worse into other hazard setters on average. Just in general it's going to have too big of an opportunity cost next to something that can provide more to a team's defensive structure or scare stuff out easier for example. Maybe some day we'll get a good gnome. The moment that happens I'm spriting Lario.

Flamianha: Someone earlier said that this is the worst Pokemon the generator's put out and while I don't necessarily agree, the fact that I see where they're coming from speaks volumes since we've got some real garbage here. I don't think I need to elaborate much more than others already have.

Short thoughts because I analyzed way too many fake Roulettemons Pokemon at this point

Vigilcanth: Pretty unfortunate that this is underpowered, STAB moves are weak and the coverage is nice but I don't think it's powerful enough for the current meta.

Virtutric: Cool, but it might be too overpowered for the current state of the metagame. I'm on the fence about this though so I might come back to it.

Flazam: Kind of the same case about Virtutric, but this one is funny but it might be too underpowered. It's still kinda cool though.

Gnomleaf: Funny, but pretty weak as it is. Might be able to go off with Fishious Rend + Coil, Wish and Refrigerate Rapid Spin but apart from that it's not very good.

Flamianha: lol

Pretty disappointing slate, but hey, that's what Roulettemons is kind of supposed to go through a bit of the time.
