Smogon front page RSS feed.

The smogon front page should have an RSS feed that will track the updates.

Users shouldn't have to check the page manually.

An RSS feed would be useful if updates were posted on a more frequent basis. Since the last three updates were Sept. 24, Oct. 10, and Oct. 18, I definitely wouldn't consider them "frequent", however informative.

The time it would take to redesign the front page news to accommodate a weekly RSS feed isn't worth it, especially when a direct link to the front page is accessible from any page on the entire website (via the Smogon University logo). You're never more than one click away from the front page at any given moment.

I don't think the frequency of updates really limits the usefulness of an RSS feed. I'd say it will actually make it more useful, since checking manually will often yield no results, having the rss feeds will remove the need to do so.

How much time do you actually lose by checking the front page? Anywhere from two to twenty seconds, depending on your internet connection. So even if you check every couple of days, you lose less than a minute out of an entire week. Numerically, I still don't see the point.

I've added my two cents. I'll let others add their comments.

You could say that about any site with an RSS feed. The advantage of RSS is that people can see all their news updates in one aggregated location.

Exactly. If no site had an RSS feed, those 20 seconds would add up.

I don't think there's any point arguing that RSS feeds aren't useful.

allow me to add mine

i think i speak for the majority of users when i say that i actually never check the smogon front page, except when someone informs me that 'it's on the front page news.' an rss feed would be extremely beneficial to those users who often don't navigate to the front page and simply go directly to the forums whether through a bookmark of /forums/ or by typing in the address manually, as i often do. an rss feed would allow users to skim what is pertinent to their interests instead of having to root around for news that they are involved/interested in, as well.

I think we need SOME way to make news more prominent. We have the Facebook page, which is good, but not everyone uses Facebook. RSS would be one way to make sure people get news when it comes out. But announcements/threads in Stark would probably serve just as well.

I realize this thread is super old, but I still feel this is a great suggestion that should be implemented.

Just thought I'd bump it rather than make a brand new thread...

Seriously though, RSS would be kick ass. Please? :D

Ha, I was reminded about this thread I made, so I thought I'd give it a bump. Interesting someone had done it just yesterday.

Seems a shame it wasn't considered when so many people were for it. Would it require that much of an overhaul to the backend of the page? I'd imagine the feed could just be updated seperately alongside the page if it was hard.

There are probably loads of automated solutions though.

I did find find a smogon twitter account, but it seems like a troll account. Having a twitter update alongside the front page and whenever anything else important happened would be just as useful really.

So I guess I'll turn this thread into an "Is there a smogon twitter and if not, would someone like to make one?" :D.

It was considered, hence why the owner of the site posted saying it was a good idea. :P

It's just a matter of doing it really. I don't know enough code, hopefully one of our awesome programmers will see this and take an interest?

I believe @SmogonU is a valid Twitter account for us, but don't quote me on that.

I like this idea a lot as well.
In addition to the front page, maybe it can be expanded the forums also.
I've been using RSS feeds for awhile now and saves me loads of time from checking out each individual website for updates.
