Smogon iPhone App?

It's doubtless been mentioned before, but I think having Smogon capabilities on an iPhone or iPod touch would be an excellent idea!

The app could contain a general Pokedex with move lists, base stats, TM capabilities, etc. But another tab could contain the strategy/movesets, etc (sort of like the Pokedex for Smogon is now)

Some pros to doing this would be to promote the site in a great way (and technically marketing on iTunes!). Also, I don't see anything wrong with charging $0.99-1.99 for the application, which could help with server costs and stuff like that.

The only problem I can think is that it might be hard to create the actual application and not just make it a bookmark (as in, have to connect to the internet to access information). It might cost money as well.

What does everyone think about this? Could a mobile version of Smogon be viable as well?

The website works perfectly fine on the iphone. I myself have an ipod touch (same thing browser wise) and I can load pokemon pages in ~5 seconds on wifi. I'm sure it's a little slower depending on your service provider, assuming you're not at home, but it should still come up pretty quickly. Just bookmark smogon =P

The thing is, if you live in a crappy place with no 3G/cell phone service (like mine), it'd be nice to be able to look something up whenever you'd like (i.e. long road trip when EV'ing or team building, etc.)

Your essentially charging for a free resource. Not a good plan.

Well, it doesn't have to cost anything... I was just saying it'd be an idea to help with the servers. But a free application works too. I'd pay for it, though :P

iirc there was an dex app posted on Smogon a while back, but it pulled its info directly from Bulbapedia which caused problems with their non commercial clause, and they decided to periodically change formats slightly to break links on the app. A review can be found here. Having a app with strategy stuff as well as dex listing would be pretty nice, and changing a small fee for it seems fair, though if it was free it would be an even better advertisement for the site.

I agree tha this would be a fair idea (assuming we put out updates), though the programming aspect will most likely keep this from becoming something. Should someone decide to put in the time, however, I could see this being a very successful addition to Smogon's resources/

I agree with you both. I didn't know there WAS a pokedex app, and it looks great! The only thing I could find on the iTunes store was a pokedex, but it was in French, haha.

That's a big point...the programming could be really complex to make an app, let alone update it. And it would be a great way for Smogon to gain even more popularity! Plus, it would just be awesome...

I definitely think this is a cool idea. I have an iTouch, so i cant check out smogon when im not near wifi. Having an app with the amount of information Smogon has would be amazing. I could make teams in the car, which would greatly alleviate boring car rides. Also a shoddy battle app would be really cool too. I dont know what would be required to make that, but i would be interested.

App schmapp.

Here is a zip (9.4MB) containing the diamond and pearl section of Smogon. Unzip, stick it on anything that has a web browser, and read at your leisure.

All links within the /dp directory of the site should work, except the nature links in the analyses (because they're broken on the actual site). Links to pages outside that directory are directed to the actual website as is originally the case.

Bugs: Stylesheets and images are not included. This doesn't affect usability much.
I get character set issues, notably with the accented e in Pokémon. YMMV.

If there is interest in this I could try and fix the bugs, and maybe make a snapshot of the whole Shoddy site (minus the forums).

It would be much easier to make a "mobile optimized" version of Smogon then an application. And then you could use it on more than one machine (other smartphones ahoy)

By the way thanks cantab now i don't have to run my monthly gzip for december

You already run a monthly archive? Is it published anywhere? And how do you do it? I used wget, but as I mentioned was left with a couple bugs.

Yeah, maybe at this point a "mobile version" of the site would be more effective and reach more people... and it'd definitely run faster than loading the whole normal site on a phone.

Thanks for that download cantab, really useful!
