Yeah, I'm 99% positive that's not what gorm ment.

Uhh, the "colin" of the server implies the person who's going to be "in charge". If DJD's the admin, he's obviously going to be in charge.

I know there's going to be mods too though (obviously), so I guess it's shared responsibility among a bunch of people too. Bleh, whatever. -.-

Ahh, Gorm, in that case it's definitely going to be shared among all the mods. I ny opinion, it's probably going to be Jump with the most dominant online presence, though I don't know how much actual battling he'll do (heh colin proved that you don't have to battle to be dominant on the server anyway).

I forgot about bearzly. -.-

Good to hear, hopefully your admins will realize that the nature of these servers makes it so that very little adminning is actually necessary, something that seems to escape the admins on most servers.

actually, with all new servers that will get high traffic A TON of modding is necessary to maintain order. i should know, i barely get to battle because i'm too busy modding.

Is there no way to password protect the server, not a password thats only given to the elite (it could be posted anywhere and everywhere on the site) but just to stop non smogon users from stumbling in?

If it's not in the main window and have to do "Advanced" to find it then that's as close to a password as I think it'll get...

You're still permitted to enter the server, regardless whether or not you are a member on the Smogon board. We don't outcast any players who aren't actually a member of the site. Though, with the server, it's a high possibility more members will join Smogon after they understand we have our own Shoddy Battle server.

i agree, this can be used as publicity tool as well as a place for smogoners to hang and battle and perhaps test new ideas, remember the server will have different rules to the official server as it tests possible metagame changes as well.

So what's the update on this?

straight from #insidescoop because you guys are entitled to it, yesterday at 5:43pm:

[17:43] <+DougJustDoug> I have to go for a while. I was hoping to catch chaos and ask him to send me the shell account info. If any of you see him, please relay the message. If he's waiting for me to complete the usage stat gathering code, before bringing the server up in public -- I'm working on that code this weekend.

that's good news to hear

although i just finally realized today after reading jumpman's post that my inside scoop access had been gone for a while now =( , I was going to post a few suggestions regarding tournaments, most people I told these to liked them a lot.

Oh yeah, one little question. Are Fling, Recycle and Natural Gift going to be implimented right away on this server, or are you guys going to let those moves slide until further notice?

The fact that Smogon is now hosting a server does not change any of the realities of tasks that remain to be completed. If Smogon developers wanted to complete these moves, they could have done so any time in the last year and they would have been added to the source tree. It's the same thing with 2 v. 2 and whatever else you might be imagining. If Smogon developers wanted to help with these, nothing was stopping them from doing so over the whole last year. The fact that they are now hosting a server does not change anything.

Of course, that's not to say they can't start now, but it will just be a coincidence, rather than something resulting from Smogon having its own server. I will certainly be happy if people here want to help complete the remaining tasks. To be fair a couple of people like dragontamer have contributed minor things, and I'd certainly be happy to see more of that in the future.

I am posting this because several posts in the topic, including the one I quoted, seem to suggest a lack of understanding with the nature of the program. Shoddy Battle is first and foremost free software (as in, open source), so the source code was always out there. It's not like the source code is just becoming available to Smogon now.

Just a question, where will the Smogon leaderboard be posted(If we have one)? Will it be a seperate tab on Shoddy's website, or will it be displayed on a page on Smogon?

Is the Smogon server going to use a modified source code? If so, it would be good if some kind of flood protection was implemented like on most IRC channels, since flooding is a problem on the official server when mods aren't around.

Sorry for stealing everyones thunder, but the creator of the server, DougJustDoug, will have the Hal9000 modbot on there at all times. It's already on the CAP server, and it auto-flood controls.
