Smogon's Shoddy Battle Server to be released soon

Excellent post. Seriously, the shit Colin has to deal with on that Official Server is unbearable, and I would never want to deal with the responsibility that he takes on. Don't bitch about it here. Just imagine the garbage he deals with every day moderating the Official Server.

Anyway, Im glad Smogon is taking the step towards their own server. It should be a highly competitive environment and fun to play on.

This was sort of touched on but I just want to clarify as another user expressed this same concern and I didn't see a direct answer but...
There was one legitimate concern that someone had, and I'm 99.9% sure it wouldn't happen, but just to clarify, and use more commas, and drag on this run-on sentence even farther, this server wont turn into a chat room like IRC #smogon correct? I mean, I know there will be a main chat function like the Official Server has right now, and chat naturally has its ebbs and flows of off-topic material, but it won't turn into an all out #smogon right? I'm sure you guys wouldn't let that happen, but I just want to make sure as I don't think that type of environment is what everyone would appreciate on a battling server.
 
I'm sorry if I sound really stupid in saying this as I've never played shoddy, will we have to download anything to use it? I'd have joined shoddy, but it's not my computer I use, and therefore aren't allowed to download a lot of things onto it...
 
You would only need Shoddy installed on your computer, that's it, you are just going to a different server.

I can't speak for what will happen, but I think it might? The chat is really just for that... chatting. I don't see there being any real restrictions on what can be discussed. #smogon is fun =) I suppose it'll be similar to how the Smogon server in NetBattle was. I never really played during the NetBattle era so I don't know how it was.
 
I don't see how Shoddy turning into #smogon is bad. it would actually help me, because I don't have the patience to get irc to work and shoddy gets boring. both of these in the same place might mean I do something again (like before DP was released).
 
Great idea. I think it'll work out great and give smogoners a wonderful chance to be able to test out new pokes against fellow smogoners with a common goal.

I'm excited for Smogon's server. Though Im hesitant due to the divide, and Id think Official would still be the most popular server for a while...

Oh and I heard the server will be up tomorrow, fact or rumor!

Basically, if you don't like Firebot, chances are you won't like #smogon. That's why I don't want the Smogon server to turn into that.

Of course, this probably doesn't apply to you, but it would discriminate against a lot of people.
 
that will most likely not be the case. smogon's nb server chat was usually different from #smogon's, a lot of irc regulars either don't play frequently or even at all.
 
For the record #smogon is quite different from what you see in Firebot. Firebot is a lot sillier than the #smogon chat (though of course it has its moments too).

firebot is the child of #smogon, and thus can run a little wild, but #smogon is much soberer; perhaps for the child's sake
also agreeing with loki about the smogon server being different from #smogon unless brain alex and ls suddenly regain an interest in pokemon lol
i just sure a hell hope it ends up more like #smogon than the brawl dominated main chat on the official
no disses to colin he's a real dude.

hopefully it's up by august, thatd be sick ;D

question though, who will be the "colin" of our server? jump or chaos or just a more shared responsibility between a buncha people?
 
I know DJD is an admin because of all he is doing and I know a lot of the moderators here will be mods there as well.
