Week 6 team reviews, everybody! Let's get straight into it.

Jabba vs triangles:
This match-up saw Jabba bring the same 6 as Johnald last week with a different Thief Skarm set. Big 4 will always be playable or decent. I think Rest Zap is probably optimal here, but either way, the 5+1 is strong. I'm not in love with DD Mence without Metagross, since I feel there is no better way of compressing forcing pressure into Skarm+waters, but I think being able to stall and Spikes shuffle with big 4 Zap could offer some compensation. Maybe there's also something to be said for using Mence to trade out Bliss for Zap if Skarm+Tar can trade into opposing Protect Pert (especially not with Wish Support), but BKC Tar without Mag/Spin or Wish hasn't been the most consistent approach for me lately. I feel like the tier has been getting a bit fast for Focus Punch Tar without something extra against Skarmory or Swampert -- probably a product of Aero teams foregoing Blissey for more active options.

Triangles brought double-elec Cloy. I love these kinds of teams, but I still can't bring myself to get behind Metagross as the sole rock resist on a team (and certainly not without a water-type to back it up). I'm assuming Meta was NOT Agility, considering how it was played into Blissey with Tyranitar behind it. A Thunder Wave would have decomissioned it. I'm not sure what to make of this either. On the one hand, I feel that the greed of a build like this should encourage the player to actively seek to trade out opposing Tyranitar and rely on non-Meta pieces defensively to get the most out of Meta, who is a more consistent endgame threat than Tyranitar. And Metagross bleeds value by letting Skarmory Spike up for cheap. On the other hand, I can see that Metagross offers a sturdy normal resist and compresses an extra physical attacker on a skinnier build. But there's no Spin, and we don't know what the Tyranitar set is, since it was revealed as the last mon to fodder to Mence against a Blissey comp where it would have had its chances. Was it Pursuit? in any case, I agree with leading Cloy and t1 Surfing Tyranitar (and t2 Spiking with Gar behind) and think it's one of the more theoretically interesting ways of making use of it. I also think Ice Beam was a devious touch. I don't know if I believe clicking it in front of unrevealed Mence from 41% is ever going to net value at this level, since DDing on the turn is exclusively a low ladder play, but without a clearly better move in that position, I can understand prefering a Cloy sac to wasting HP on another mon. It got its value as an HO Spikes lead. To that point, it's possible triangles kept Tar in the back to do everything in his power to avoid giving Mence a free turn, but that's also a consequence of running such a frail comp. No Pert means DD is free against phys Tar and a skinny Zap makes going directly to it rough. Anyway, I like this kind of comp with a Roar Zap set, but maybe Rest Talk Toxic should be considered with (Wish and/or) Roar Jolt? Hard to rely on Zap defensively more than once on this kind of team, but I think there might be some upside if you can find a way to slot Rest on Zap since it's oppressive.

Endill vs Garay Oak:
Endill brought one of the earlier versions of 'slop' that Fruhdazi built into the known CB Mence/Wish Jira/Yama/Cune Spin balance. With some RNG, Garay got packed up, but that's just what End Pert sand does to unprepared Sandless Bliss comps. Fake defensive builds will lose to RNG from any decently made offense (with set up threats or hard-to-wall traders), and Yama Bliss is fake defense. No new commentary to offer here.

mielke vs Blaise:
This game shows why I don't really respect Metagross without a real rock resist next to it. Same thing can be said for Registeel. Unfortunate to miss Meteor Mash against Tar, and Blaise DDing on mielke trying to preserve it was the ultimate punish. RNG is a factor, but this kind of thing happens less often to Swampert and Claydol -- though Double-edge and HP Bug crits are more problematic. Maybe offensive Starmie was the way to go here, as it outspeeds the standard bulky Ada Tar of the day to revenge kill it. I don't understand how this team plays into Gengar or CB Meta, but I really am a fan of how mielke keeps bringing fresh takes with the chutzpah to go off the beaten path, and seeing as he's made dumps on other tours, I'm keen on hearing his thoughts on this team in particular (and suspect he may bless us with them), since it's less intuitive to me.

Blaise revealed 3 mons: one of them was a lead off Cune and another was a DD Tar. I don't really get Cune+Tar or Cune that trades on most teams. I think I liked ABR's team from CI5, because Cune can trade into Zap and Tox allows it to power through Blissey in service of Gyara or potentially Mence without Brick Break (don't use this), but one can only speculate as to what Blaise had in the back. I also prefer Registeel with Spin, but I can't get behind suicide lead Cune+Spin, since Spin serves Cune best, and trading Cune usually means playing with momentum which makes justifying Spin all the more difficult.

zinc vs Fruhdazi:
This was an interesting match-up.
1772046944988.png

Zinc loaded a Sandless Aero Wish Jira Spikes balance without Spin. I think this kind of team is good with a Zap>Celebi instead, but I saw too many people clowning this comp and saying it felt incomplete. I'm here to say I support Gengar with Wish support and think that this is one of the few ways to attempt it without Dugtrio (or Flygon) and that I feel that Sandless Gar should be claiming a few scalps in this metagame where people are running Sandless Gar-weak comps. More Lax than in a while, (mono) Stoss Bliss, etc. I think it's easier to make this kind of thing work with Flygon, for sure, but the only I could be higher on this concept is if zinc found some way to slot Rest on Gengar to really stick it to the type to come unprepared for Gengar. Ghosts are foul and cheap, and they should be used to do stuff like this more often. I appreciate that Celebi is used to have a better match-up against Claydol, and I can understand prefering it to Rest Zap, especially with Swampert, but I think Zap's phasing and activity against Suicune deserves consideration. Rest+HP Grass+Roar has a lot of match-ups, and I think we should see it more often. In any case, Toxic on Jira and Pert and Leech Seed on Celebi are enough to hold CM Bliss at bay. And if this is Bold Recover Celebi, it should be good enough vs Snorlax. All of the pressure here should keep Suicune off balance. Only something like Raikou (with sufficient Celebi counter measures) looks scary here -- and of course some superman comps are, too -- but there is something to be said for zinc's ambition here. I also have to say that it's very difficult to do Celebi+Jirachi well, but this comp comes close, using real defensive sets on a competent team that is sufficiently built to justify it. Multiple Skarmory checks, multiple Sand and Spikes immunes, multiple mons with Recovery -- this is a by-the-books team which does have its place at the SPL level. If there are any critiques I have of this build, they're that the offense against Swampert is non-existent, which means that Aero can be slow to revenge kill against Pert+Spikes+Spin and that it's not particularly good against mixed attackers, but you can't win them all with Aero.

1772046991794.png

Fruh wanted a break from building on the week and loaded an ABR team. This is another one that puzzles me, but I think I can more or less intuit the idea here. It's a BKC-esque 'fighter' balance with CB Rock and what might be Agility Metagross? I like the idea here, with CB Rock being more likely to lure Jirachi and Metagross than Tyranitar to better support Metagross. Wish to support the bulky attackers and Starmie as a kind of pseudo Milo with more presense against offensive teams due to speed and coverage, where the slow pieces divide the game against bulkier grounded teams. Plus, Starmie can bluff Spin and trade with Gengar before Claydol is revealed -- or maybe it even has Spin to allow the synergy to go both ways!? Trading either into Gar also frees Regirock to go to town. I think I would like Thief on Skarmory, though, because stealing Leftovers from Zap, Gar, Skarm, or Lax are good for all of the obvious endgame plans here and free Meta to more comfortably run Boom>Slide (not having to mu divide Rest Zap and Cune). This is probably strictly an upgrade on the Spikeless fighter balance style of old typified by Garay Oak's bring on the week, but I avoid teams that are this grounded with speed that struggles to hold tempo against Blissey, but this is a conceptually rich team, and while I didn't originally love it, I think it bears further consideration, and maybe I'll just have to play it to find out if my concerns are as relevant as I make them out to be. Instant classic?

mayo vs Johnald:
mayo brought a standard Aero Spikes comp with what looks to be Super Jirachi in the special check slot. I think Zapdos works a lot better because it can better switch into Pert, beat Cune, and trade with or paralyze opposing Zap more consistently, among other things. But a gamble that there will be no Zapdos and relying on an Ice Punch Gar to carry some of the load (with pressure from an offensive Pert to get it low in the first place) could be considered. The extra rock resist and Skarmory check frees Swampert to run a more offensive set, since Aero is less scary. I can understand mayo's choice to use a non-Lefties (Lum? Bluffing Lum?) Tar, but this match-up makes me think we should see more Sub Tar instead, like Boah or the standard with HP Ghost, but slotting Wish and Spin are hard. Maybe instead of Regirock on Fruh's bring, for example? I've been extremely high on Johnald's ability to build (and pilot!!) defensive comps for a minute and forcing people to come very prepared against him, and I think this bring by mayo was a good try, but the longevity of a Tyranitar that didn't flinch the Suicune (lol) was wanting.

1772049756306.png

This was an interesting comp. I hate these kinds of teams for being unable to revenge kill bulky, grounded threats, so I have avoided them like the plague. I don't really trust defensive Jirachi without Protect, but Reflect is a really clever try here. With TW+Aroma Bliss and Toxic and WoW to hit the mons that can't be TW'd, this team is well positioned to counter many of the trends of the meta. This team isn't as easy to counter as it might look, with Wish+Reflect Jira and TW+Aroma Bliss covering up so much defensively, Cune+SkarmGar+Tox Jira guaranteeing offense against stall, and defensive Jira+2x floating Aero checks patching the mu against EC and adjacent comps. This team checks all the boxes and is frustrating on paper, to boot. I don't see how it beats Forretress+Quagsire, though, so it's probably unviable. Anyway, Johnald is having the best SPL of anyone so far in terms of average quality of play and build combined, and I think this guy is one to watch -- or to put on a watch-list, after the terrorism he's wreaked with Dusclops and EBC shenanigans.

Recap:

No time to write a big post this week whoops

Total (last week):
19-11 (4-1)

Triangles vs Johnald
Surely this week johnald will lose. That hasn't happened in a while but, much like last week, I just don't see triangles's unbeaten streak ending here. Triangles should also be very comfortable against any kind of offense that johnald might bring and also is typically very clear-minded in long games, so I think it will be hard to catch him off guard.

shitrock enjoyer vs Kollin7
If my memory serves correctly, and it usually doesn't, then kollin has kind of had fruhdazi's number in their last few meetings. SPL is a bit of a different story though, and I think fruhdazi will be able to prepare pretty well for kollin given the amount they've played each other.

pixie909 vs zinc
Zinc has played great and came just a play or two away from winning last week. A close loss is of course still a loss, but her season has been pretty stellar thus far. Blaise has also been great, but to my eye just not quite as good as zinc.

M Dragon vs mielke
This one's tough to judge. If m dragon is practiced in adv I'll take him against the whole pool (maybe not triangles but I don't think that matchup can happen before playoffs). If he's in 6cb mode I wouldn't. Anyway, mielke has played pretty well, and getting owned by suicune sometimes really happens to the best of us, but it's just hard to pick against m dragon. It's also fun to see that two more boomers have joined triangles in the pool - I'm sure he was feeling lonely at twice the age of anybody else playing in week 1.

JabbaTheGriffin vs Endill
Endill played pretty well last week and got really lucky. Jabba played very well and got pretty unlucky. It's better to be lucky than good, so endill should take this one. This really has more to do though with both of their recent bodies of work, and endill's does impress me a bit more.

W8 is up! 2 more teams have rotated their LUs which leads to ZPanther and robjr starting this week, while M Dragon and kollin7 stay in ADV for another week after coming victorious in their week 7 games. Believe it or not, only 3/10 teams have not made changes to their ADV slot this tournament, which is a crazy stat: Tyrants, Scooters and Raiders.

w7 team recap for the two people still following this thread, and for posterity!

triangles vs Johnald:
triangles loaded an old Clat team from CI6, as Kollin helpfully pointed out. Hera should have won, independent of the other mons on the team, simply because Johnald completely ignored it. That is to say, while I have criticisms of the team and it lost here, it is not because the offense fizzled out or because there isn't a competent philosophy behind the team. Suit Tar supports Hera, Breloom, and Mix Mence, who all appreciate Gar dead or low. Tar and Mence overlap on Pert for Agility Metagross; all of the team overlaps on opposing Zapdos in support of one another; and there are a number of ways to overload or deal with opposing Salamence. The team makes up for several physical weaknesses with Loom's Spore and (Black Belt boosted) Mach Punch, Tyranitar's Pursuit (for Dug) and Ice Beam (for Mence), Mence's Intimidate, and Zap's TW. Endill and Clat were saying in the chat that triangles might have won had he preserved Breloom, for the record. I'm more interested in how Salamence was sacrificed to eat a TW from Blissey, how Zap was difficult to switch into, and how Quagsire couldn't be overloaded. You don't expect to face Dol+defensive Pert/Quag, so that's fair, for sure, but I feel like it was pretty consistently coming down to whether Heracross could land its moves at the right moment, unless triangles traded Metagross with Zapdos. In any case, switching into Zap was rough after Tar was traded for Claydol, which doesn't really help Heracross or Zapdos (see Blissey behind) so much and barely does anything for Agility Metagross (again, because of the 2x checks that go unscathed by Tar). It does help Mence, because Dol has Ice Beam, but that's not really enough to break through. This is all probably a testament to Johnald bringing offbeat fare and having an extra wall somewhere it isn't expected to be, but my main concerns are that this team doesn't want to switch into TW Blissey, Zapdos, or Metagross, and I'm concerned about its solidity, but I can definitely understand why something like this was brought into Johnald, who has a Claydol stall addiction and a penchat for coming soft into Heracross. I can see a world where this landed the mu against Dugtrio and Loom+Tar were able to trap Dug and overwhelm the core for extremely good value. After all, Heracross was an excellent bring. But the RNG gods decided it was not to be.

1772461158962.png

Johnald. What the fuck is this? The Armaldo should be Knock Off (incompatible with Rapid Spin), and the Tyranitar seems to be physically invested. So I wonder what the coverage is on Claydol. If it's dropped Psychic, the Gengar disrespect is unreal. I'm guessing he's dropped boom, since he's got Maldo and Tar for Lax and Quag and Zap for Cune. He said he ignored Heracross (obviously), and the lack of speed control is felt here. I also feel like other threats have a solid chance against this team with the right support (Brick Mence, Agility Meta, etc.), and I hate phasers without Spikes and prefer using boom and pressure to deal with mons that need to be phased instead. Despite all this, I'm almost convinced by this squad. Quagsire eats (End) Pert for breakfast and Maldo+Tar+Dol probably do enough to hold back Jirachi. There's redundancy in Bliss/Lax/Celebi checking, in DD Tar checking, in Aero checking, in special breaker checking, and in Cune checking. The team is pretty safe in a lot of ways, and the use of Aroma Bliss is an obvious one. TW is good for Skarm, but I wonder if there isn't something more ambitious to be done here. Maybe Wish? Maybe Toxic to put Tar and other threats on a timer? Conceptually rich concept, and a proof of BL theory. I like it.

Kollin vs Fruhdazi:
Kollin brought a SpD Jira>Bliss version of 'beerlover' with Dbond Gar and HP Grass Tar, which I'm assuming was Pursuit. Can't be sure it isn't some other Mix Tar, but it's a nice touch to help against Off Pert. I think Fruhdazi is paying a tax for loading Steel and Lax offenses and is facing more Gar because of it. Rest in peace to Agility Pass Zapdos, the single best WoW absorber offense ever loved. Wish Tect Jira has the Aero match-up (another Fruh favorite) and is well-supported by Rapid Spin -- he's using Off Star here, no? It's worth mentioning (fast?) Starmie use ticking up, likely in response to the wave of End Pert. It's minimalistic offensively, but if I had to point to anything Jirachi does better than Blissey outside of handling physical attackers, it's probably the compression of Wish, bolstering the team against Pert and physical attackers; of Toxic, which pressures opposing Blissey and pressures Tyranitar for good measure; and of Fire Punch, which pressures Skarmory well in support of (an offensive Starmie's?) Rapid Spin. Smart. I'm wondering why Kollin didn't load his first love Off Gon>Pert this week. In any case, it's nice to see someone doing something different in their own style on the biggest stage. ADV is stacked right now.

Fruhdazi brought a standard Fruhdazi comp. Is this something?:
1772457546114.png

I've used it at some point, but I strongly prefer Brick Break generally. Makes sense to use Slide to cover the birds that trouble AeroDug and the grounded pieces and to use Dug to handle Blissey and the grounded steels. I don't really understand the comp, but I'd like to highlight the trend of Registeel on AeroDug and say that this style is growing on me. It's just a bit difficult to handle the Pert weakness without switch-ins and pressure, in my mind. I don't see how Machamp helps with that, or what the synergy is with Dugtrio. On a related note, one mole is a beauty mark, but three could be a sign you need to visit a dermatologist. I'm saying Dugtrio is cancer.

Blaise vs Zinc:
Blaise brought a Cune virgin comp with Dusclops. Clops kinda showed out, but maybe it could have been played more precisely. I wonder if the last move was Mean Look or Curse. I see this as part of a larger trend of non-Gar ghosts seeing high-level play in Advance pioneered by ABR. Everyone knows what this team does, so I also won't say much here.

Zinc brought U6 -- the unemployed 6, an ABR comp used in CI5 finals -- with what are probably accurate techs. Perish Song is the only non-Skarm phazing you're going to find on this comp outside of a potential Roar Mence. Thief Skarm does wonders for Starmie+Metagross. Wish Mence keeps an otherwise type-frail comp ultra solid. With all the Natural Cure users and two (Skarm-weak, ish) Toxic immunes, Blissey should forego Aromatherapy and TW for a set that is more active against Skarmory. CM makes the most sense to keep Suicune out of your face. Nothing new here, but a solid pick.

M Dragon vs mielke:
1772459115750.png

Protect Suit Tar on a SkarmDug defense is reminiscent of the comp McMeghan loaded into Baddummy in the SPL XVI finals tiebreaker. There's also also a Bolt Beam Blissey and a Surf/Beam/Tect Pert. I hate dropping EQ from non-Mono Pert and I prefer to run CM>Toxic on Blissey, but one of these mons needs to be able to force CM Blissey out, since the rest of the team is troubled by it. Unless the plan is to 1v1 in a CM Bliss war and use Dugtrio to make up the difference against opposing Bliss checks and Suit Tar+Skarm to make short work of opposing Spikes control? I love the combination of Pursuit Tar and CM(?) Blissey, for what it's worth. Having a meat shield to throw into Gengar to avoid Bliss getting boomed is huge, and having extra Spikes support is very welcome. I think it's pretty much the optimal Tar+CM Bliss set up -- especially in how it better enables Rapid Spin against the Ghosts that typically harangue Starmie. Dugtrio solves the typical problems of big 4 and offers physical presence. It might allow Pert to drop EQ, as mentioned before, if you're the type to like that kind of synergy. The speed control Dugtrio offers is legit, and Skarm/Bliss/Pert will always be the premier defensive core in the tier. Ditto what I said for Starmie in the current meta under Kollin. It's just been struggling a bit recently, and I love to see M Dragon bring tried and true back with a serious try like this, defensive overlap and all.

1772459666297.png

I liked mielke's bring, too. Wish Bliss supports the whole team quite well. I've had mixed feelings about phys Tar on Superman comps. I'll first say that the only relevant distinction in my mind between any random Flygon comp and 'Superman' is whether there are two other floaters, since I feel the major advantage gained by Flygon on comps where it isn't being used largely offensively is the Spikes immunity. Forgive me, boomers, for I have sinned, but I think this is comp qualifies. What Tar does for these comps is what it always does: it brings Sand, it squares off with Dol/Starmie, and it adds a normal resist, which supports Flygon against Aerodactyl. This makes sense when dropping Jirachi for Blissey. Bringing Wish gives back to Tar, and the fact that it heals under Sand is nice. My concerns, however, are that it tends to want Spin and brings Sand against its own Zap and Bliss, and Pursuit Tar prevents Taunt IP Gar 6-0'ing. I think Sleep Talk Zap fares better with Sand. That all being said, HP Grass on Zap synergizes quite well here and keeps opponents honest. The player needn't reveal Tar early, and Wish keeps everything together. Tidy comp.

Jabba vs Endill:
I don't understand Cloy+Bliss, especially not when Cloy is being used without Dol as a second spinner. Sandless makes sense, though, especially if you can find room to fit Wish here. I also don't know what to make of this Blissey set. TW makes sense to outspeed opposing Tar for HP Grass to make progress, and I guess it's a nice bring into Registeel and End Pert meta. It's also nice for pressuring Skarmory extra hard on a comp that features what would be an otherwise overloaded Cloy. This team is stupidly Gengar weak, though, and Bliss is very duggable. As the only special check, it's also overtasked, and the set doesn't patch the Cune weakness. Toxic Zapdos also feels annoying. Rest Zap will be difficult to KO without landing Explosion, but teams can and sometimes do have multiple ways of keeping Zap safe from Metagross and Gengar. It's ambitious, and maybe there's a team in here somewhere, but I can't place my finger on what the aim of the concept was here.

1772460958788.png

Team of the week for me. It looks like a riff on an ABR comp. This one is maybe a bit more difficult to load into Dugtrio stall or Snorlax, and of course, it's lacking physical presence. But It's a curious build with its upsides. Jirachi makes the Aero match-up solid, which a lot of these Cune Spikes comps are worse against. Raikou helps against opposing special attackers. With Wish and Aroma, it could be Rest or Sub/Roar/Toxic. I love Wish+Aroma with Forre, too, and with all of the tools against Gengar, this is well-made, and Raikou's speed tier should come in handy against +1 Pert and Tar, but the DD Tar match-up is quite scary. This is a really good team, though, and I hope to see more people testing stuff out in this space. I've been sleeping on Raikou, but there's something seriously dangerous about Bolt Grass coverage, particularly when Tyranitar is lured by the likes of Tox Jira (or TW Blissey). Not much to say here, tbh, since I still haven't fully digested the comp, and I don't have much to add, but I'm impressed.
