Project SS UU Victim Of The Week v2- Week 53: Darmanitan (Submissions)

Diancie @ Leftovers
Level: 100
Sassy Nature
Ability: Clear Body
EVs: 252 HP / 32 Atk / 96 Def / 128 SpD
- Diamond Storm
- Moonblast
- Mystical Fire
- Stealth Rock

Im convinced Diancie is the best Thunderus Therian counter we have ( It would be Goodra but Goodra gets knocked and isnt really considered viable) It switches into any attack, just lays down rocks because its so bulky it isnt really threatened by thundy and if the Thundy player is insane enough to stay in it OHKOS with diamond storm. here are some calcs to prove it
:Diancie: :Diancie: :Diancie: :Diancie: :Diancie: :Diancie: :Diancie: :Diancie: :Diancie: :Diancie: :Diancie: :Diancie: :Diancie: :Diancie: :Diancie: :Diancie:

252 SpA Thundurus-Therian Thunderbolt vs. 252 HP / 128+ SpD Diancie: 93-111 (30.5 - 36.5%) -- guaranteed 4HKO after Leftovers recovery
32 Atk Diancie Diamond Storm vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Thundurus-Therian: 300-354 (100.3 - 118.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 SpA Thundurus-Therian Volt Switch vs. 252 HP / 128+ SpD Diancie: 73-87 (24 - 28.6%) -- possible 5HKO after Leftovers recovery

It has the downside of getting chipped a lot by thunderus' volt switch but as theres no ground thats good against it and all the lightning rod/ voltabsorb mons that arent thundy suck this is imo the best we got. Please ban it.... PLEASE

We all are pretty aware that we must acquire the sire in order to have a sustainable counter to Thundurus. Doesn’t even had a good chance even after lefties are removed after Knock Off, so it’s just neat to have.

252 SpA Thundurus-Therian Focus Blast vs. 252 HP / 96 SpD Quagsire: 176-208 (44.6 - 52.7%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

252 SpA Thundurus-Therian Focus Blast vs. 252 HP / 96 SpD Quagsire: 176-208 (44.6 - 52.7%) -- 25.8% chance to 2HKO

Counter

Celebi @ Leftovers
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 252 HP / 152 SpD / 104 Spe
Calm Nature
- Thunder Wave
- Psychic
- Recover
- U-Turn

It counters Thundurus because Knock Off doesn’t 2HKO and this Thundurus set doesn’t run U-Turn. You can chip Thundurus for a 3HKO and heal as needed or get momentum with U-Turn.

Thunder Wave and U-Turn let’s you pair with slow breakers. Unlike Tangrowth, you outspeed Conkeldurr and can counter Amoonguss to some extent plus you have U-Turn.

Zarude-Dada @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Leaf Guard
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Power Whip
- Darkest Lariat
- U-turn
- Jungle Healing

The omnipresent zarude is one of the best thundurus checks out there, being able to outspeed and heavily damage it or KO after some chip, which thundurus will usually have. Zarude can just u-turn on it to wear it down and can even eat a focus blast max roll.
252 SpA Thundurus-Therian Focus Blast vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Zarude: 294-348 (83.7 - 99.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

And with that, it's time to vote! Sorry for the delay but better late than never! The checks and counters submitted for the week are down below

:ss/Cobalion:
Cobalion @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Justified
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Close Combat
- Stone Edge
- Volt Switch

This week we have the so called “sewage mon” Cobalion! Despite what its nickname suggests, cobalion is very good at the moment as an offensive rocker and pivot. The ability to counter zarude and Nihilego while checking top threats like excadrill and Thundurus is immensely valuable to teams these days. It wouldn’t be crazy at all to say cobalion might just be a metagame staple. How will you scrap this dog? Submissions are due January 23 at 11:59 PM GMT-8

Swampert. i also really should think

Swampert @ Leftovers
Ability: Damp
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Sassy Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Stealth Rock
- Flip Turn
- Earthquake
- Toxic

here are calcs

252 Atk Cobalion Close Combat vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Swampert: 166-196 (41 - 48.5%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

0 Atk Swampert Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Cobalion: 188-224 (58.2 - 69.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

0 Atk Swampert Flip Turn vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Cobalion: 57-67 (17.6 - 20.7%) -- possible 5HKO

swampert wins in a 1v1 and cobalion cant volt switch out.

Mild Nature
- Shadow Ball
- Close Combat
- King's Shield
- Toxic

Submitting Aegislash as a counter. Cobalion can't threaten much damage on it and is forced into Volt Switching out to something, giving Aegislash the opportunity to fire off a Shadow Ball or Toxic something. Any Aegislash set can work, but I chose the Toxic set since it's quite good at spreading damage throughout a game.

Tangrowth @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Relaxed Nature
- Giga Drain
- Knock Off
- Earthquake
- Sludge Bomb

PhysDef Tangrowth is a really good counter to sewage goat. It tanks all of Cobalion's attacks greatly, wears it down with Rocky Helmet, and can actively threaten it thanks to running Earthquake.

252 Atk Cobalion Close Combat vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Tangrowth: 94-112 (23.2 - 27.7%) -- 81% chance to 4HKO
0 Atk Tangrowth Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Cobalion: 116-138 (35.9 - 42.7%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

:ss/Slowbro-Galar: @ Shuca Berry
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
- Calm Mind
- Sludge Bomb
- Scald
- Slack Off

Slowbro-g takes very little and can easily regen any hit off especially volt switch which it can constantly pivot in and take them, stone edge is a 6hko meaning even double crits dont kill it while close combat does less damage. Slowbro-g can also easily abuse the free turns given by cobalion and setup which in turn basically can win the game on the spot as cobalion has to run from scald burns and go into another pokemon.

252 Atk Cobalion Stone Edge vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Slowbro-Galar: 63-75 (15.9 - 19%) -- possible 6HKO
252 Atk Cobalion Close Combat vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Slowbro-Galar: 28-33 (7.1 - 8.3%) -- possibly the worst move ever
0- SpA Cobalion Volt Switch vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Slowbro-Galar: 56-66 (14.2 - 16.7%) -- possible 6HKO

0 SpA Slowbro-Galar Scald vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Cobalion: 75-89 (23.2 - 27.5%) -- 71.5% chance to 4HKO

:ss/celesteela:
Celesteela @ Leftovers
Ability: Beast Boost
EVs: 252 HP / 76 Def / 180 SpD
Relaxed Nature
- Heavy Slam
- Flamethrower
- Leech Seed
- Protect

Celesteela is a hard check to Cobalion since it can easily stall out Close Combat with Protect and Leech Seed and KO it with Flamethrower. Stone Edge and Volt Switch also do pitiful damage to it as well.

0 SpA Celesteela Flamethrower vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Cobalion: 180-212 (55.7 - 65.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
0 SpA Celesteela Flamethrower vs. -1 0 HP / 4 SpD Cobalion: 270-318 (83.5 - 98.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
0 SpA Celesteela Flamethrower vs. -2 0 HP / 4 SpD Cobalion: 360-424 (111.4 - 131.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252 Atk Cobalion Close Combat vs. 252 HP / 76+ Def Celesteela: 126-148 (31.6 - 37.1%) -- guaranteed 4HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 Atk Cobalion Stone Edge vs. 252 HP / 76+ Def Celesteela: 70-83 (17.5 - 20.8%) -- possible 7HKO after Leftovers recovery
0- SpA Cobalion Volt Switch vs. 252 HP / 180 SpD Celesteela: 70-84 (17.5 - 21.1%) -- possible 7HKO after Leftovers recovery

Thundurus

thundurus-therian.gif

Thundurus-Therian (M) @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Volt Absorb
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Thunderbolt
- Nasty Plot
- Focus Blast
- Psychic

Thundurus-Therian is the perfect counter to Cobalion. With his very useful talent volt absorb, Thundurus completely prevents Cobalion from planning a change and switching via volt switch which leaves a limited choice when it comes to attacking.
The fact that you can only choose between placing rocks, using close combat, or hard switch is an advantage for Thundurus.
Remember also that Thundurus isn't faster than Cobalion. This means that you won't necessarily have to risk a focus miss. You'll be able to ohko it after the special defense drop caused by close combat if the rocks are up.

You can find some calcs here:

252 SpA Thundurus-Therian Focus Blast vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Cobalion: 370-436 (114.5 - 134.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 SpA Thundurus-Therian Thunderbolt vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Cobalion: 208-246 (64.3 - 76.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 SpA Thundurus-Therian Thunderbolt vs. -1 0 HP / 4 SpD Cobalion: 313-370 (96.9 - 114.5%) -- 81.3% chance to OHKO
252 SpA Thundurus-Therian Thunderbolt vs. -1 0 HP / 4 SpD Cobalion: 313-370 (96.9 - 114.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock

While
252 Atk Cobalion Close Combat vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Thundurus-Therian: 102-120 (34.1 - 40.1%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
idk if u knew this but this set runs stone edge

252 Atk Cobalion Stone Edge vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Thundurus-Therian: 228-270 (76.2 - 90.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

and as u can see it almost destroys thundy-t

Here's a fun one.

Amoonguss @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 220 Def / 36 SpD
Bold Nature
- Giga Drain
- Sludge Bomb
- Foul Play
- Spore
252 Atk Cobalion Stone Edge vs. 252 HP / 220+ Def Amoonguss: 79-94 (18.2 - 21.7%) -- possible 5HKO
252 Atk Cobalion Close Combat vs. 252 HP / 220+ Def Amoonguss: 71-84 (16.4 - 19.4%) -- possible 6HKO
0- SpA Cobalion Volt Switch vs. 252 HP / 36 SpD Amoonguss: 24-28 (5.5 - 6.4%) -- possibly the worst move ever

0 SpA Amoonguss Giga Drain vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Cobalion: 46-54 (14.2 - 16.7%) -- possible 6HKO
252 Atk Amoonguss Foul Play vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Cobalion: 32-38 (9.9 - 11.7%) -- possible 9HKO
Amoonguss Sludge Bomb vs. Cobalion: 0-0 (0 - 0%) -- possibly the worst move ever
Do you want to simulate paint drying? Neither Cobalion or Amoonguss can do much of anything to the other. Regenerator guarantees that Amoonguss will be healthy even if there's a bunch of back and forth trading and switching. You can chip away with Giga Drain, and have a generally solid "fuck you, Cobalion" mon.

Counter.

Tagging the following ahead of time to complete your reservations, the deadline is due tonight avg ExiDudi Aqua Jet StarFalcon555

Also Zoaw thank you for the interest in this project but like HTC said Thundurus isn’t a check to this set due to the tendency to get killed by stone edge and relying on focus blast. I don’t put Thundurus on a team to check cobalion, I put cobalion to check Thundurus. I ask that you change your submission to a mon that actually checks Cobalion. Thankfully there’s plenty left to choose from, if you have any questions feel free to PM me
My mistake, I didn’t see the set and thought that stone edge wasn’t part of it, I’ll edit this

nidoqueen.gif

Nidoqueen @ Life Orb/Black Sludge
Ability: Sheer Force
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
- Stealth Rock/Toxic Spikes
- Earth Power
- Sludge Wave
- Fire Blast

Nidoqueen is a good opposing hazard setter to Cobalion as it stops volt switches while also having Cobalion needing 4 close combats to kill Nidoqueen. Also if you run Black Sludge over life orb you'd be able to switch in a little more without losing a guaranteed OHKO with earth power, but fire blast goes from a definite OHKO to a 75% chance OHKO. So some bulk for a little damage, but overall it makes a nice check to this Cobalion set.

Basilisk (Haxorus) @ Choice Band
Ability: Mold Breaker
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Close Combat
- Earthquake
- Outrage
- First Impression

Haxorus is a check that can shrug off anything Coba can throw at it and take it down without much trouble

252 Atk Cobalion Close Combat vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Haxorus: 166-196 (56.6 - 66.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 Atk Choice Band Haxorus Close Combat vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Cobalion: 344-406 (106.5 - 125.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO

:ss/Azelf:
Azelf @ Expert Belt
Naive Nature
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
- Psychic
- Flamethrower
- U-turn
- Energy Ball

Azelf is a solid check to cobalion, being able to outspeed and OHKO it with flamethrower. Since cobalion is forced to switch out, azelf can gain momentum with U-turn on a switch-in to keep control of the game.

And with that out of the way, it’s time to vote! Down below are the checks and counters submitted for the week!
