Project SS UU Victim Of The Week v2- Week 53: Darmanitan (Submissions)

Voting is up! Congratulations to avarice for winning the checks section and BigFatMantis for taking runner up. For the counters, we have Askov with another victory this week while both Flare219 and Monky25 tied for the runner up. Congrats all of you! Your submissions will be added to the archive. Now, lets take a look at this week's victim!
:ss/Scizor:
Scizor @ Life Orb
Ability: Technician
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Swords Dance
- Bullet Punch
- Quick Attack
- Knock Off

SDbpbpbpbpbpbpbpbpbpbp. Our next Victim is Scizor! This metal bug has been surging in usage over the last few months, being number #1 used in UU twice now, sporting an impressive 30% usage. Its also risen to the S ranks of the VR, further showing its supremacy. Its wide variety of sets and overall splashability have made it a top threat to look out for. How will you take down Scizor? Submissions are due March 9, 2021 at 11:59 PM GMT-8

Zeraora @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Volt Absorb
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Plasma Fists
- Knock Off
- Blaze Kick
- Volt Switch

Zeraora is a check to scizor via its ability to live a +2 Quick attack and being able to retaliate with blaze kick. It is also able to force momentum of it since nobody wants to lose their main win con against an opponent.

252+ Atk Life Orb Technician Scizor Bullet Punch vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Zeraora: 88-105 (27.7 - 33.1%) -- guaranteed 4HKO
+2 252+ Atk Life Orb Technician Scizor Quick Attack vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Zeraora: 237-279 (74.7 - 88%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ Atk Zeraora Blaze Kick vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Scizor: 368-436 (130.9 - 155.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Reserving Victini!

:Victini: Victini @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Victory Star
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Blue Flare
- Psychic
- Energy Ball
- U-turn

Special Victini is an excellent partner for a large amount of breakers, being able to clean OHKO most Steel types. Guess what type Scizor is?

252 SpA Victini Blue Flare vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Scizor: 844-1000 (300.3 - 355.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Yeeeah. Victini isn't even 2HKO'd by +2 LO Bullet Punch, so it can even switch in if your lucky

Amoonguss @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 220 Def / 36 SpD
Bold Nature
- Spore
- Giga Drain
- Sludge Bomb
- Foul Play

Amoonguss makes for a solid counter against this Scizor as it does not have to worry about U-turn. It can sponge all of Scizor's hits and should Scizor choose to Swords Dance, finish them with Foul Play. Rocky Helmet provides some chip damage in addition to having Scizor take Life Orb recoil.

Reserving Skarmory

:skarmory:
Skarmory @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Sturdy
EVs: 252 HP / 160 Def / 96 Spe
Impish Nature
- Brave Bird
- Spikes
- Whirlwind
- Roost

Skarmory is a counter to Scizor. Knock Off is about the only thing this Scizor can really do to Skarmory, and even then, it can't break through with SD thanks to Whirlwind. Skarmory can just Roost off whatever is thrown at it and punish the Scizor user by getting up Spikes or phazing and racking up Spikes damage it they're up already. Rocky Helmet is just an even bigger screw-you to Scizor, as any turn where it hasn't been knocked off is a turn where the bug has more than a quarter of its health shaved off just for attacking.

I am nominating Silk Scarf Bewear as a check to this Scizor set.

:ss/bewear:
Bewear @ Silk Scarf
Ability: Fluffy
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Drain Punch
- Double-Edge
- Darkest Lariat/Taunt
- Swords Dance

Ah, Bewear, the Pokemon that is way tankier than it should be. Fluffy doubles its defense against contact moves, and with an extremely powerful Normal and Fighting STABs, Bewear is more than capable of hitting back. Lariat is to hit ghost types, though you won't get to use it too often. Taunt is a good alternative that allows Bewear to face off against defensive juggernauts like Skarmory and Quagsire and win. Finally, SD rounds out the set, and Silk Scarf makes Double-Edge even more of a nuke, particularly nabbing an OHKO on Amoongus at +2.

Now, onto the matchup. Since this Scizor has opted for priority over sheer wallbreaking power, it can do nothing but Swords Dance futilely while Bewear stares at it blankly. Bullet Punch is Scizor's best option here, and even then, Scizor needs to max out its attack before it can one-shot Bewear. In other words, more than enough time for Bewear to knock out Scizor. As a bonus, since Bewear attacks after Scizor's priority hits, Drain Punch heals a decent amount of the damage off too.

Bewear is a wallbreaker in the purest sense of the word. Almost nothing slower than it can take a +2 Double-Edge or Drain Punch. Of course, there are quite a few things faster than it that can hit it in its weak special defense, so a good defensive core is greatly appreciated here. Any physical attackers, however, are not going to have a good time. Bewear facing off against one of them means that something on the other side is getting nuked. It is for this property as a particularly tanky and powerful wallbreaker that I am nominating Bewear as a check.

Relevant Calcs:
252+ Atk Life Orb Technician Scizor Bullet Punch vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Fluffy Bewear: 84-100 (22 - 26.2%) -- 8.3% chance to 4HKO
+6 252+ Atk Life Orb Technician Scizor Bullet Punch vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Fluffy Bewear: 336-396 (88.1 - 103.9%) -- 25% chance to OHKO
252 Atk Bewear Drain Punch vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Scizor: 120-142 (42.7 - 50.5%) -- 2.3% chance to 2HKO
^You may be thinking that Life Orb instead of a Silk Scarf would allow Bewear to act as a full counter. All I have to say is that hindsight is 20/20.
+2 252 Atk Silk Scarf Bewear Double-Edge vs. 252 HP / 220+ Def Amoonguss: 424-501 (98.1 - 115.9%) -- 87.5% chance to OHKO

Chandelure @ Choice Specs
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Fire Blast
- Psychic
- Shadow Ball
- Trick
Chandelure is a check to Scizor. It obviously doesn't want to take a Knock Off, but it resists both forms of Scizor's priority and outspeeds it, forcing it out. Due to Chandelure's extreme wallbreaking power, whatever comes in is dying regardless.

252 SpA Choice Specs Chandelure Fire Blast vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Scizor: 1396-1648 (496.7 - 586.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ Atk Life Orb Technician Scizor Bullet Punch vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Chandelure: 77-90 (29.5 - 34.4%) -- 6.7% chance to 3HKO
+2 252+ Atk Life Orb Technician Scizor Bullet Punch vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Chandelure: 152-179 (58.2 - 68.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Remember for all those who have reserved a Pokemon to complete their submissions, and that submissions are due Tuesday, March 9 at 11:59 PM GMT-8! Also, if you know anyone who might be interested, share this project with them! The more submissions the better!

:ss/Volcanion:

Volco (Volcanion) @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Water Absorb
EVs: 24 HP / 252 SpA / 232 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Toxic
- Steam Eruption
- Flamethrower
- Sludge Wave
I think that Volcanion is a counter to Scizor. Having the ability to switch in to all of Scizor's moves and the speed to outspeed it, Volcanion can OHKO Scizor using Flamethrower. Futhermore, Toxic can be used to badly poison any incoming Pokémon.

252 SpA Volcanion Flamethrower vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Scizor: 708-832 (251.9 - 296%) -- guaranteed OHKO
+2 252+ Atk Life Orb Technician Scizor Bullet Punch vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Volcanion: 60-70 (19.9 - 23.2%) -- possible 5HKO
+2 252+ Atk Life Orb Technician Scizor Quick Attack vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Volcanion: 160-188 (53.1 - 62.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
+2 252+ Atk Life Orb Scizor Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Volcanion: 257-304 (85.3 - 100.9%) -- 6.3% chance to OHKO

252+ Atk Life Orb Technician Scizor Bullet Punch vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Volcanion: 30-35 (9.9 - 11.6%) -- possible 9HKO
252+ Atk Life Orb Technician Scizor Quick Attack vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Volcanion: 81-95 (26.9 - 31.5%) -- guaranteed 4HKO
252+ Atk Life Orb Scizor Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Volcanion: 130-153 (43.1 - 50.8%) -- 3.1% chance to 2HKO

:ss/Incineroar:

Incineroar @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 248 HP / 216 SpD / 44 Spe
Careful Nature
- Overheat
- Knock Off
- Toxic
- Parting Shot

This big cat is a good counter to this Scizor since it lacks Superpower. None of Scizor's moves do much on a switch in to Incineroar after Intimidate (Quick Attack does 20% and is the most powerful to Incineroar), and if Scizor chose to SD on the switch to Incineroar, it has to either switch out or just die to Overheat while doing still minimal damage with Quick Attack. Incineroar can also punish a switch with Knock, Toxic, or pivot out with Parting Shot for momentum.

:ss/Rotom-Heat:

Rotom-Heat @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 248 HP / 92 SpD / 168 Spe
Calm Nature
- Volt Switch
- Overheat
- Defog
- Pain Split

Rotom-Heat is a check to this Scizor. Given a free switch into Scizor, Rotom-Heat can revenge KO it with Overheat (as long as it hits). Rotom-Heat does not fear even a +6 Bullet Punch unless it has already taken some major damage. Beyond Scizor this Rotom also helps manage the other great Steel-types in the tier by threatening with Overheat and maintaining momentum with Volt Switch.

+6 252+ Atk Life Orb Technician Scizor Bullet Punch vs. 248 HP / 0 Def Rotom-Heat: 131-155 (43.2 - 51.1%) -- 5.1% chance to 2HKO

:grimmsnarl:

Grimmsnarl (M) @ Babiri Berry
Ability: Pickpocket
EVs: 252 HP / 136 Def / 120 Atk
Adamant Nature
- Play Rough / whatever else you want
- Superpower / whatever else you want
- Fire Punch
- Sucker Punch / whatever else you want

Grimmsnarl is a check to this scizor! Generally speaking, you don't even need to switch the Grimmsnarl in or bring it in on neutral momentum, most Scizors will happily switch / come in regardless as most Grimm sets get destroyed by this Scizor -- but this one's different! Let's start with some calcs.

252+ Atk Life Orb Technician Scizor Bullet Punch vs. 252 HP / 136 Def Babiri Berry Grimmsnarl: 165-196 (41.8 - 49.7%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
+2 252+ Atk Life Orb Technician Scizor Bullet Punch vs. 252 HP / 136 Def Babiri Berry Grimmsnarl: 331-390 (84 - 98.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ Atk Life Orb Technician Scizor Bullet Punch vs. 252 HP / 136 Def Grimmsnarl: 330-393 (83.7 - 99.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
124+ Atk Grimmsnarl Fire Punch vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Scizor: 308-364 (109.6 - 129.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO
124+ Atk Life Orb Grimmsnarl Fire Punch vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Scizor: 400-473 (142.3 - 168.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ Atk Life Orb Scizor Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 252 HP / 136 Def Grimmsnarl: 44-52 (11.1 - 13.1%) -- possible 8HKO
252+ Atk Technician Scizor Bullet Punch vs. 252 HP / 136 Def Grimmsnarl: 254-302 (64.4 - 76.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Like I said earlier, the vast quantity of times Scizors will happily switch into you or accept positions of neutral momentum. In these cases, the following will generally happen -- they'll bullet punch immediately in an attempt to prevent screens / taunt, and will do 41-50 damage. Because of Grimmsnarl's Pickpocket ability, their life orb will be stolen when the Babiri Berry is consumed and contact is made, making Fire Punch an easy OHKO back even if it's a set that runs HP instead of Speed EVs.

Let's for a minute be pessimistic assume that you're trying to switch in, however. If Scizor swords dances as you switch in --

+2 Bullet Punch does around 84-99 damage. Upon contact, Babiri berry is removed and, due to Grimmsnarl's Pickpocket ability, Scizor's Life Orb is stolen. With his new shiny life orb in hand, Grimmsnarl's fire punch does 140-168, guaranteeing a KO on the scizor.

If Scizor knocks off as you switch in --

Knock off does a measly 11-13% damage -- and because it makes contact and also removes your Babiri berry, Grimmsnarl's Pickpocket ability will steal Scizor's Life Orb. Now, Scizor's unboosted bullet punch on the following turn will only do 64-77%, and Fire Punch will easily OHKO in return.

If Scizor bullet punches as you switch in (which would probably not happen to begin with) --

You'll die to the second bullet punch if you stay in :( Note that this will probably never happen -- but if it does, you still get to steal its life orb and cripple its offensive capabilities, allowing you to switch in to another soft check without having to worry about as much damage coming your way!

anyways, that's it! a few final things of note are -- the atk investment isn't relevant for this set, but it guarantees Fire Punch KOs for non-LO Scizors. This set isn't a niche random gotcha set just to bop scizors either -- it's also an amazing check for metagame threats like Alakazam. More people should use offensive grimmsnarl, even if it isn't this set! have a nice day :]

Congrats to Celebiii and Monky25 for typing for second among the checks. For counters, congratulations to The Disco Devil for taking first and BigFatMantis for taking second! Great job everyone, all your submissions will be added to the OP shortly. Now, here is our next Victim!
:ss/Aegislash:
Aegislash @ Leftovers
Ability: Stance Change
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SpA / 4 SpD
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- King's Shield
- Substitute
- Toxic
- Shadow Ball

In honor of the suspect test going on, our next Victim is Aegislash! Striking fear in the hearts of many players, Aegislash is an incredibly versatile and strong (but not banworthy) Pokemon. With diverse sets like Subtoxic, mixed, choice specs, and SD LO, aegi can fit on a variety of teams and perform great. This set we are looking at is SubToxic, the strongest Aegislash set in the meta in my opinion, How will you take down this spooky sword? Submissions are due Tuesday, March 16 at 11:59 PM GMT-8!

Reserving Obstagoon!

obstagoon.gif

Obstagoon @ Flame Orb
Ability: Guts
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Knock Off
- Facade
- Close Combat
- Switcheroo

Obstagoon is a Counter to SubToxic Aegislash. It doesn't care about Shadow Ball or Toxic, Sub is whatever and Kings Shield is merely delaying the inevitable. On top of that, Switcheroo nulifies Obstagoon's Burn damage and instead leaves Aegislash with no recovery and chip every turn

-1 252+ Atk Guts Obstagoon Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Aegislash-Shield: 204-240 (62.9 - 74%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

This is at -1... it OHKO's both Blade and Shield form at neutral, and like previously stated, Kings Shield only delays the inevitable

Zarude as a counter

zarude.gif.m.1608618298

Zarude @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Leaf Guard
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Power Whip
- Darkest Lariat
- U-turn
- Jungle Healing

Zarude doesn't rly care about toxic because of Jungle Healing and doesnt take much from Shadow Balls

Nominating status-spreader Nihilego as a hard check.

:ss/nihilego:
Nihilego @ Black Sludge
Ability: Beast Boost
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Knock Off
- Thunder Wave
- Hex
- Sludge Bomb

With its immense special bulk, Nihilego can switch in on Aegislash's Shadow Ball, hit it with a Thunder Wave, then OHKO it with Hex. If the Aegislash returns to Shield Forme, Hex becomes a 2HKO instead, but then recovery from Black Sludge allows Nihilego to almost certainly tank another Shadow Ball and KO Aegislash first. Sludge Bomb is Nihilego's STAB of choice for its fairly high chance to poison, while Knock Off is always nice to have, especially to deter switch-ins. Thunder Wave is just good team support, and can be used to surprise Aegislash if it decides to use King's Shield to scout Nihilego's moves.

However, with Nihilego's lack of reliable recovery, it can only switch in on Aegislash once, and therefore cannot act as a long-term counter. With the tools it has, though, it is more than good enough as a check.

Calcs:
252+ SpA Aegislash-Blade Shadow Ball vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Nihilego: 120-142 (33.4 - 39.5%) -- 22.6% chance to 3HKO after Black Sludge recovery
252 SpA Nihilego Hex (65 BP) vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Aegislash-Shield: 104-124 (32 - 38.2%) -- 1.4% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
^Guaranteed to break substitute
252 SpA Nihilego Hex (130 BP) vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Aegislash-Shield: 208-246 (64.1 - 75.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 SpA Nihilego Hex (130 BP) vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Aegislash-Blade: 480-566 (148.1 - 174.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO
And a demonstration just in case the explanation wasn't clear enough.

reserving krookodile as a check

:krookodile:
Krookodile @ Lum Berry
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Earthquake
- Knock Off
- Stealth Rock
- Taunt

Krookodile is a solid check to SubTox Aegislash. It can afford to switch into Shadow Ball at least twice, and then proceed to threaten Aegislash out with Earthquake or Knock Off (the former of which can dodge King's Shield.) The real beauty of this set, though, is Lum Berry. Lum Berry ensures that you have a one-time get-out-of-jail-free card against Toxic, which is invaluable. If Aegislash decides to get cheeky and Toxic on the switch, it'll be in for a nasty surprise when Krookodile ignores it completely. Lum Berry isn't limited to just dealing with Aegislash either though: given how often Toxic is thrown around by things like Chansey, it can useful for pivoting in and putting on the pressure with Knock Off without the risk of being crippled.

252+ SpA Aegislash-Blade Shadow Ball vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Krookodile: 101-119 (30.5 - 35.9%) -- 43.6% chance to 3HKO

Suicune @ Leftovers
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 HP / 160 Def / 96 Spe
Bold Nature
- Calm Mind
- Scald
- Rest
- Sleep Talk

Suicune is a check to aegi since it is able to calm mind to get out of range of shadow ball 3-4hko and start boosting and rest keeps it healthy, it can come in on any attack, CM up to +1, and then proceed to rest and shadow ball becomes a 5hko from there and easily take little to no damage from aegi and beat it 1v1.

252+ SpA Aegislash-Blade Shadow Ball vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Suicune: 135-160 (33.4 - 39.6%) -- 19.8% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ SpA Aegislash-Blade Shadow Ball vs. +1 252 HP / 0 SpD Suicune: 91-108 (22.5 - 26.7%) -- possible 5HKO after Leftovers recovery
