Normal / Flying
Pokedex #398
[Smogon BW2 OU| Serebii | Bulbapedia | OU Thread | Research Thread]
Overview
########
  • Great wallbreaker with spammable STABs
  • U-turn and decent Speed make it a good member on VoltTurn teams, and a great Pokemon to partner with Talonflame
  • SR weakness, bad bulk, and common weaknesses means it has difficulty switching in and is forced out by anything faster
  • Mediocre Speed by offensive standards
  • Common Pokemon stop it, such as Skarmory and Aegislash
########
name: Choice Band
move 1: Brave Bird
move 2: Close Combat
move 3: Double Edge
move 4: U-Turn / Quick Attack
ability: Reckless
item: Choice Band
evs: 4 Def / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
nature: Jolly / Adamant

Moves
========
  • Brave bird is the Flying-type move of choice for Staraptor. It becomes a whopping 324 BP attack after applying Reckless + STAB + CB. It hits everything that doesn't 4x resist it hard. Specifically nailing OHKOs on top-tier threats, such as Genesect, Conkeldurr, and Mega-Venusaur
  • Close Combat hits Steel- and Rock-Types that resist Brave Bird, OHKOing Tyranitar, and Heatran.
  • Double-Edge is for Dual STAB and can just as hard as Brave Bird, though it gives no helpful coverage except for hitting Rotom-W and Rotom-H .
  • Quick attack for the much needed priority on a CB set. It should be used to pick off weakened foe's
  • U-turn is used to scout. Since Staraptor is decently fast, it can keep momentum by U-turning out on hard counters and bring out an appropriate Pokemon that can check the opposition.
Set Details
========
  • The Attack and Speed EVs are used to help Staraptor hit fast and hard.
  • The 4 Defense EVs allows Staraptor to switch into SR a total of 5 instead of 4.
  • An Adamant nature secures some OHKOs that Jolly cannot get. It can potentially OHKO Rotom-W after SR, 2HKO Heatran after SR, and for sure 2HKO Aegislash after SR.
  • Jolly can outpace +Spe Genesect, Lucario, and Kyurem-B, while speed tying with Manaphy and Charizard.
  • A choice band gives Staraptor the ability to break through walls, resists, and most defensive Pokemon.

Usage Tips
========
  • Use Staraptor's ability to break walls early game before entry hazards.
  • Brave Bird is the best move to pick due to the its raw power (OHKOs or 2HKOs most of the Tier after SR, like Heatran) with Close Combat patching up holes in the coverage.
  • U-Turn shouuld be used against teams with Skarmory and 252 HP Aegislash.
  • Staraptor should be brought in through double switching by luring something weak to BB, like Conkeldurr or Mega-Venusaur because it can't take an attack.

Team Options
========
  • Staraptor appreciates Rapid Spin / Defog Support (from Lati@S, Starmie, Excadrill, and Mandibuzz) so it doesn't have to take 25% damage whenever it comes in. THey can also go head-to-head with some of Raptors checks. Hazards and recoil add up fast and Raptor can KO itself easily.
  • Talonflame is THE BEST patner for Staraptor. Talonflame and Staraptor pair nicely, covering each other's weaknesses. Because Staraptor can quickly dispose of Rotom-W an Heatran, common checks to Talonflame, Talonflame can afford to run a swords dance set. Other checks, such as Tyranitar, Hippowdon, Landurus-T, and Slowbro can also be easily OHKO'd / 2HKO'd by Raptor, providing Talonflame and opportunity to switch in after Raptor goes down and pick them off. Though both are physically oriented Flying-Types, both hit a myriad of foes with only a slight overlap.
  • U-Turn / Volt Switch users, such as Rotom-W, Greninja, and Landurus-T, can help Staraptor enter the battle unscathed. The latter can also set up SR and deal with Skarmory and Aegislash.
  • Excadrill has great defensive synergy with Raptor, being immune to electric and resistant to Rock. It can also hit the types that resist Brave Bird super effectively. Not to mention Rapid Spin

Choice Scarf
########
name: Choice Scarf
move 1: Brave Bird
move 2: Double-Edge
move 3: Close Combat
move 4: U-turn
ability: Reckless
item: Choice Scarf
evs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
nature: Jolly / Adamant

Moves
========
  • Scarf Staraptor has the fastest Brave Bird outside of the seldom seen Crobat and Talonflame nailing a perfect OHKO after SR on the ubiquitous Genesect before it can even hit. It also great for revenge killing as it has great neutral coverage.
  • Double Edge is used for another STAB attack and coverage against electric types, mostly for hittig Rotom-W and OHKOing Thundurus.
  • Close Combat is not boosted by reckless, but hits Steel- and Rock- Types, such as Heatran for 2HKO.
  • U-turn is for safely switching out of Staraptor's Checks and Counters and sending in a teammate while keeping up the momentum.

Set Details
========
  • The EVs are to ensure the maximum amount of damage the birdy can deal out.
  • Adamant is used for some extra power.
  • Jolly can be used to out speed and get a shot at OHKOing a +1 neutral nature Mega Charizard X.
  • Choice Scarf is used to boost Staraptor out of its crowded speed tier.
Usage Tips
========
  • Staraptor can usually attack first, so it can take out most of the tier before they can strike back.
  • With Scarf, Staraptor can almost always U-Turn out of its counters; make use of that capability to allow favorable switch-in get in and force switches.

Team Options
========
  • Starmie, or any other offensively inclined Rapid spinner can clear the field and make a dent in the opposition.
  • Entry hazards punish foes that are forced to switch out because of U-Turn. Excadrill can provide offensive utility in the form of SR, RS, and a strong base Attack.
  • Talonflame and Staraptor have incredible offensive synergy, being able to form a U-turn core that can hit extremely hard before going down.

Other Options
########
  • Staraptor can provide Defog support, but since it is incomparable with Reckless, and it is mostly inferior to other defoggers, such as Mandibuzz which can provide more Utility.
  • With Intimidate and good coverage, Staraptor can pull off a SubRoost set.
  • Sharp Beak can be used to boost Brave Bird, but it doesn't give Raptor the speed or hitting power the the choice items give.
  • Life Orb can be used along with Roost, but BB has great coverage alone, so being locked into it isn't a very big hassle.

Checks & Counters
########
  • Chip Damage: Stealth Rock, Rocky Helmet, Sandstorm, and recoil add up fairly quickly letting Raptor KO itself.
  • Bronzong and Skarmory sport high defenses and can only be 3HKO'd by Raptor.
  • Any faster pokemon, such as Garchomp, can use Stone Edge and dispose of Staraptor even before it attack.
  • Aegislash resists all of Staraptor's moves, but can be KO'd with two Brave Birds, unless King's shield is activated in which case lefties may activate.
  • Priority users: almost every decent priority user in OU can put a huge dent in Raptor.
  • Rhyperior.

This is just my non-QC opinion, but Choice Band Staraptor needs to be on there. CB Staraptor is one of the best wallbreakers out there, and it's the main role that Staraptor does that Talonflame can't.

252+ Atk Choice Band Reckless Staraptor Brave Bird vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Tyranitar: 168-198 (49.1 - 57.8%) -- 97.7% chance to 2HKO
252+ Atk Choice Band Reckless Staraptor Brave Bird vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Heatran: 174-205 (45 - 53.1%) -- 89.1% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
252+ Atk Choice Band Reckless Staraptor Brave Bird vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Aegislash-Shield: 128-151 (49 - 57.8%) -- 96.1% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
252+ Atk Choice Band Reckless Staraptor Brave Bird vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Hippowdon: 235-277 (55.9 - 65.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
-1 252+ Atk Choice Band Reckless Staraptor Brave Bird vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Landorus-T: 267-315 (69.8 - 82.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ Atk Choice Band Reckless Staraptor Brave Bird vs. 252 HP / 184+ Def Gliscor: 237-279 (66.9 - 78.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Poison Heal

Resists are bolded. This thing makes walls and tanks cry, and those calcs are only with Brave Bird. Close Combat cleanly OHKOs Tyranitar and Heatran if you predict right. PLUS it gets U-turn for those sticky situations, which strips Tyranitar of up to 65% of its health (nothing like Talonflame's piss-poor U-turn). The only Pokemon that can truly switch into CB Talonflame is Skarmory, everything else basically stands a good chance of being 2HKOd or OHKOd.

Here's the spread I would use:

Choice Band
########
name: Choice Band
move 1: Brave Bird
move 2: Close Combat
move 3: Double Edge
move 4: U-Turn
ability: Reckless
item: Choice Band
evs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
nature: Adamant / Jolly

Thanks for the input, Tainic and CyclicCompound

I'm thinking of dissolving the "Stardard" set because CB does it better, even with the move lock.

Scarf seems "eh". Talonflame does a better job at it really, but Emobird hits much harder. If anything, Intimidate + U-Turn can provide *some* use to a wall.

Halcyon.

The HP EVs should be moved to Def. This will make sure you have an odd HP number, meaning you can switch into SR more times (i.e., SR will do 24% instead of 25% when you switch in the first time). Also, you have U-turn slashed with Double Edge on the Scarf set even though it's the standalone fourth option, so remove that. Also, I think the Scarf set should be the first in the set order. Being able to take out Genesect is really cool, and even though it doesn't have the same power as Band, it still hits ridiculously hard regardless.

Ash Borer

I've heard they're short of room in hell
Not wish support but healing wish support is pretty damn valuable for Raptor. A pokemon whose best moves incite massive recoil is held back by the fact that it should be able to murder the entire opposition but only can one or two thanks to its HP. Healing wish support forces the opponent to fight Raptor twice, often completely overwhelming their defensive capabilities. IT also lets you play more aggressively against status users. Jirachi is excellent in that it can lay down hazards, as well as provide other utilities before passing a healing wish to Staraptor. In a similar vein LAtias can remove hazards with defog, and pass a healing wish offering amazing support.

Please mention this in team options.

Here are some examples of this tactic succeeding with Talonflame. As well, it works with Staraptor who has an easier time beating down defensive pokemon.

Okay so I talked on IRC with CyclicCompound and we both agreed on two things: Band is a damn freaking amazing nuke, and Scarf is complete garbage.

Scarf is missing the point of Staraptor: a nuke. It OHKOes and 2HKOes literally the metagame with a Choice Band. Why you would want to try and revenge kill with it, especially since it's SR weak and loses its offensive potency, is beyond me. It doesn't fit with what makes Staraptor viable in OU.

The set should be exactly what CyclicCompound listed, no compromises anywhere.

Not even the 4 Def EVs? It's situational, but it works. Scarf lets you outspeed and OHKO a bunch of Glass Cannons while Band is a wallbreaker, though I see your point. Scarf is basically a harder-hitting, non-priority Talomflame with Brave Bird as it's only move.

So, Band is the only viable set in OU for Emobird? Ok!

IMO, Scarf Staraptor is just outclassed by CB Gale Wing Talonflame.

252+ Atk Choice Band Talonflame Brave Bird vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Hippowdon: 151-178 (35.9 - 42.3%) -- 92.4% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 Atk Reckless Staraptor Brave Bird vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Hippowdon: 144-169 (34.2 - 40.2%) -- 38.8% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ Atk Choice Band Talonflame Brave Bird vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Tyranitar: 108-128 (26.7 - 31.6%) -- guaranteed 4HKO
252 Atk Reckless Staraptor Brave Bird vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Tyranitar: 102-121 (25.2 - 29.9%) -- guaranteed 4HKO
252+ Atk Choice Band Talonflame Brave Bird vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Heatran: 111-132 (28.7 - 34.1%) -- 99% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 Atk Reckless Staraptor Brave Bird vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Heatran: 105-125 (27.2 - 32.3%) -- 58.1% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ Atk Choice Band Talonflame Brave Bird vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Aegislash-Shield: 83-98 (25.6 - 30.2%) -- 0.5% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 Atk Reckless Staraptor Brave Bird vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Aegislash-Shield: 78-93 (24 - 28.7%) -- possible 5HKO after Leftovers recovery
-1 252+ Atk Choice Band Talonflame Brave Bird vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Landorus-T: 171-202 (44.7 - 52.8%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
-1 252 Atk Reckless Staraptor Brave Bird vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Landorus-T: 162-192 (42.4 - 50.2%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

With Adamant Staraptor slightly outdamages Talonflame, but the lost of priority is just too much in a meta where everyone and their mother brings priority move.
Staraptor of course can get past Tyranitar and Heatran with Close Combat, but it can't do anything to Aegislash.
Whereas Talonflame can U-turn out of Tyranitar switch for good damage and decimates Aegislash with Flare Blitz.

Not QC, but a few things I've noticed about the analysis (feel free to change them at your discretion):

A choice band gives Staraptor the ability to break through walls and most defensive Pokemon.
Mention that it also lets Staraptor break through its resists. The ability to potentially 2-shot Rotom-W and Aegislash after Stealth Rock is amazing.

If you are in doubt of which move to pick, Brave Bird is the best move to be locked into.
While BB's raw power usually makes it a safe pick, U-turn is overall a better choice most of the time when in doubt.

Getting in some layers helps Staraptor in many ways. It first helps in turning some "50% chance to OHKO" to 100%. Secondly it also hurts all the three types that resist Brave Bird for super effective damage.
I'm not sure what you're saying here, my guess is that you're referring to layers of entry hazards (make sure you specify that, "layers" means nothing on its own). Furthermore, it's not true that entry hazards hit the three types that resist Brave Bird for super effective damage. Neither Electric, Rock, nor Steel are hit super effectively by Stealth Rock (keep in mind that while they all share a weakness to Ground-type moves, Spikes damage is calculated not based on type matchups but on the number of layers set up).

Most teams have diverse weaknesses, so chances are, the next 'mon is line will be hit neutrally/Super effectively by the move you picked and got locked into.
Chances AREN'T that this is true. Flying-, Normal-, and Fighting-type moves are some of the worst types to be locked into, Normal- and Fighting-type in particular due to the prevalence of Ghost-types like Aegislash and Gengar (both of which really appreciate that free switch).

Staraptor appreciates Rapid Spin Support so it doesn't have to take 25% damage whenever it comes in. That and recoil add up fast and Raptor can KO itself easily. Defog shouldn't be used because of Raptor's need for spikes.
Defog SHOULD be used if it's going to keep Staraptor alive, don't let that deter you. Think of it this way: the damage you're doing with CB Staraptor in the first place is FAR more than the damage you'll be doing with any amount of entry hazards.

Spikes support is great because all the types resisting Brave Bird take super effective damage just from switching in Ferrothorn pairs nicely with Staraptor as it can take a super effective attack for Starrator and set up spikes.
Same deal as above. Spikes doesn't work like that. Not that entry hazards aren't nice, but Stealth Rock is more valuable than Spikes anyway since it makes a 2HKO on Rotom-W possible.

Staraptor can run a Scarf set to patch up its mediocre speed, but it is almost always outclassed by Adamant Talonflame.
Not necessarily Adamant Talonflame, just Talonflame in general.

Staraptor gets its wings clipped against the likes of Offensive Jirachi and Rotom-W.
Both offensive Jirachi and Rotom-W will take hefty chunks of damage from Staraptor. Part of Staraptor's appeal is that it does such a great job of wearing down any defensive switch-ins.

That's all I have for now. I'm going to talk to QC about slashing Quick Attack after Double Edge. My opinion is that Reckless Double Edge is just way too powerful to pass up, especially considering Staraptor's role, but don't change anything yet. I'd like to get QC's opinion first.

Well, you'll never really get to 2HKO Aegislash with King's Shield, so it's free to let Lefties heal it as you switch out and back in or w/e. If it's not running Leftovers, that's nice, but it still cant 2HKO variants with King's Shield.

CyclicCompound

I was talking on IRC with other members, and we agreed that Quick Attack shouldn't get a slash next to Double Edge. It simply doesn't make up for the raw power that Double Edge provides, particularly against Rotom-W, one of Staraptor's more common switch-ins. While Brave Bird can 2HKO, Double Edge gives Staraptor the ability to faint it without having to rely on it switching in, making it one of Staraptor's best options to continue ripping massive chunks out of bulky Pokemon.

However, you can mention it in the moves section, since priority IS viable. It's more a matter of Double Edge being part of Staraptor's whole niche and role.

I think adding priority users in C&C is a good idea. Sure, you could argue that for many Pokemon, however Staraptor's typing means that it does not resist any priority attacks at all except for Shadow Sneak, compounded by its poor bulk. For reference:

252 Atk Life Orb Mamoswine Ice Shard vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Staraptor: 229-273 (73.3 - 87.5%)
252+ Atk Choice Band Technician Scizor Bullet Punch vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Staraptor: 217-256 (69.5 - 82%)
252+ Atk Choice Band Talonflame Brave Bird vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Staraptor: 315-372 (100.9 - 119.2%)
252+ Atk Life Orb Bisharp Sucker Punch vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Staraptor: 243-289 (77.8 - 92.6%)
252 Atk Life Orb Technician Breloom Mach Punch vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Staraptor: 172-203 (55.1 - 65%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

edit: Extreme Speed users as well i guess. Genesect and Dragonite are probably the most prominent, but then there is the rarer Zygarde and Lucario

All of these just need SR damage and/or a bit of recoil damage to ensure the KO
