Starcraft 2

Two problems:

1) Very large skill level spread across different Smogon users
2) Not many people play regularly anyways, I've only seen 5-6 users online in the past month

But if there is lots of interest I could host a tournament of some sort (will probably have to pick a format that helps alleviate #1)

Does smogon make tourneys to compete in for SC2? I think that would be cool.
Considering people have enough trouble trying to complete their games of pokemon on this, a competitive pokemon website, I think inactivity and finding times to play might be a bit tricky.

Marine/siege tanks VS Mutalisks/banes. Place your bets people. Oh ya, the banes have movement upgrade and tanks have siege upgrade. Happy polling!

I'm a high gold Zerg to give you an idea of my skill level. I'd be up to playing with some people from Smogon. That would be fun. Maybe we could do some fun little team games too.

i learned how to almost 4gate :D :D :D :D

also immortals and warp prisms are really cool now (yes i have been watching White-Ra stream but thats not the point hehe).

you people are too good for me, i should be in the wood league or something. theres got to be another noob out there on smogon...

Actually I am worst the starcraft player out there. Aciddently missed rallied my probes to my opponents base instead of my stalkers. Turns out my opennent had moved all his for es out so my probes killed all his SCVs.

You think YOU'RE a bad player? I'm in the bronze league at rank 50 last I checked... and that was season 3. I'm kind of OK at zerg, but it's really hard to macro. I always hesitate to get that expo worrying about htem attacking me. But let me tell you, when a swarm of zerglings and mutas attack your opponents base, it feels good. I remember when I got mass mutas and the protoss player only made colossus. That was a fun battle if I recall.

Jesus I played League of Legends on my track pad for 2 days before caving in and buying a mouse, I can only imagine how difficult Starcraft must be to play without one, considering how micro intensive it is.

Fucking (BAN ME PLEASE) shits how on earth do you deal with banshee rush as terran? Rines are so slow. Just lost when i fast expanded and he just flew around and wasted my mules and shit. God that fuck was aggravating. I guess having better micro would help significantly but god.

I really really really hate where I am in the ladder right now. Only reason I lose is when the game is shorter than ten minutes and I get cheesed or don't scout a fourgate and fast expo into a quick death or something. If the game goes longer than 15 minutes and I get a chance to macro I just can max on average units and tech like a mother fucker and just destroy the utter shit people with a 3/3 max army to their 150 supply and no sign of tech.
I don't play enough to go up though...

So this game really holds very little competitive appeal. I either just win outright with shit games that aren't close at all which end like this:

Or I lose to a god damn six pool or something.

And I have yet to produce less workers than someone. People seem to think 40 is a solid number or just forget or something but god damn.

I am surprised I did not see this before, awesome more Starcraft 2 players :D
join channel "smogon" on battle.net! also if you say your char name + code I can add you to the OP.

my terran is very bad but either get a solid number of marines and micro them well or go for a viking with a tech build. don't engage the banshee unless it's doing something critical like killing scvs or about to kill an add-on. leave it alone once it stops shooting your workers or else it will just kite all your marines dead while they try to run after a helicopter (!!!).

i'm a macro player and i had the same problem as you, dying to random cheeses/all-ins/odd timings while never falling behind in expansions/workers. getting around this:

1. simply get more experience, first you need to know what to do against a specific odd attack and second you need to be able to execute it well. how many times did i die to proxy 2 gate when i start playing because i couldn't move my zealots and probes or even build zealots while making pylons? the theory is obvious, just match his unit count and your higher probe count wins you the game. but i couldn't micro and macro at the same time and just lost games with 500 minerals in the bank and no zealots and two idle gateways. i also lost once to a 3 rax marine scv all in because i had no idea what the fuck to do against it, but i did some research and now i don't think i would have any problem holding it off (despite not practicing the defense a single time). so that's two different reasons why you just need practice against random stupid shit.

2. scout to see if he is massing units and to check what his composition is. self explanatory.

3. scout his economy and stay ahead. in the gsl or mlg or whatever you see people up 4 bases to 2 and there is virtually no way they can lose, because they are pros and have great game sense + know how to defend pushes in the nick of time. unfortunately we suck and if you try to get too far ahead in econ, oftentimes your army will just blow and you can die as a result. this sucks. example: you have to cut probes as 2 base protoss against 1/1/1 all-in. if you have 30 probes and crush the push with your probes and nexus intact, you have a good chance to win. if you have 50 probes but the push kills your nexus, you lose.

Well my terran is pretty poor but i am a mid masters toss who has watched a shitload of games so maybe i can help here.

Stopping the cloaked banshees is all about scouting (I'm assuming you mean cloaked banshees; if they're not cloaked you just make 1 viking lol). If you see your opponent take 2 gas early with your scouting scv, you can be pretty sure they are going fast banshees or are rushing to siege tanks for an early contain (though im not sure how common that is in tvt). Unfortunately, most decent players will kill your scout before taking the second gas.

You can also scout by sending as scv up their ramp and seeing what kills it. When you see your opponent's army, you should be asking yourself what they have been using their gas on. If you see only marines/depots/barracks they are teching beind it (assuming you saw them take gas earlier; if not, they are likely going for 1rax --> cc).

The other common ways to scout are scanning and floating a building over your opponent's base.

Simply by playing a lot of games you will get a feel for the common openings that other players use, and eventually it will become pretty easy to recognize what your opponent is doing early on.

So assuming you now have a decent idea that the banshee is coming, simply save scans and position your marines well to defend your mineral line as you get an engineering bay (though you should already have one) and starport tech. From there you just make one viking and you're fine. And I know banshees are annoying as shit (trust me, toss has a much worse time with them), but it is important to remember that your opponent is putting himself behind by teching up to cloaked banshees so quickly. You will have more SCVs and will (hopefully) have used your gas to get some more important tech than cloak and a couple banshees (e.g. combat shield, stim, siege mode, blue flame).

At your level, it is useful to pick one build against each race that you will do every game. As you use it more and more you will see its weaknesses and develop it into something you are comfortable with. Being very good at one build honestly is enough to get you into diamond league or even low masters, you just need to practice a lot!

Good luck with your sc2.

EDIT: fuck whistle is too quick.

damn i should join smogon on sc2......I'd be glad to have some practice partners ^^

Woot im in the top 50 in the bronze league guys! CEEEEELEBRATE GOOD TIMES COME ON!

Zerg is one of the hardest races to use. They constantly have to expand (and I suck at macro), and zerglings constantly get shot down before they can reach the opponent. Hydras however, oh man, if you can get some of those dudes, it's gg for practically everything. Nydus hydra drop in their base is so much fun, and it normally gets me a gg most of the time. Definitely the best unit in the zerg race.

Siege tanks are a prob for me though. What's the best way to counter them for zerg? Zerglings and banes get shot down, mutas get ripped to shreds by the marines that are backup, hydras don't do much to them, and roaches.... I've used them before, and I find them a waste of time.

Use roaches? I don't really know what the technical 'counter' is, but I just use roaches and it's never been a particular problem. Mass hydra roach aint half bad either. Well it's easier if you have good macro because then you can just pump out an army in like two seconds after an ingagement and do the stereotypical zerg style of hurl units until the other person dies.
Roaches are badass as all fucking hell though. Since you're only facing bronze it's not too hard to just get burrow + tunneling claws, and pop up in the middle of his siege line. Then tanks take damage from friendly fire, and roaches have massive. Not to mention their ridiculous regeneration rate while burrowed

[Hydras are] definitely the best unit in the zerg race.
A lot of people would disagree

(trust me, toss has a much worse time with them)
Dear lord I know. Especially since I favor templar to colosuss. The reason it's not as much of an issue I guess is because I'm actually good at protoss..
Which actually brings up the one thing I really hate about toss: detection. It just feels like it's so much harder to get than in other races. Overseers can be made as soon as you have a lair, so you can get them no matter which tech path you follow, and terran obviously has scan. I guess banshee's are really far down the pipe, but still.

I guess I just need to play more/play more terran. I might hop off the random train and just try to get a 1/1/1 down pat cause it's a little irritating feeling like I lost because of the radomiser not picking a race I'm 'good' with.
Thanks tay/whistle.

If you are fast expanding as Terran, to hold off a banshee rush it usually comes around 7-8 minute mark. It is pretty easy to handle because in silver league they come unescorted by marines or hellions from the opponent. Easy way to hold it off is constantly build marines don't stop for anything. When FE you should go 1/1/1 to get that viking out and you should save up energy for a scan to push away the banshee. It is also important depending on what map. It also comes with a game sense if it is close positions then always expect a drop or banshee rush from a terran.
