Tales of the Abyss Anime

I know that a lot of you absolutely love the Tales video games, and most of you who do probably also love anime! Well, this as an anime standing alone would be a good anime: it has incredible art and incredible voice acting (very strong, emphatic voices, and ones that you will recognize if you have watched anime extensively in regard to every party character at least).

When you add in how accurately and truly it captures the overall feel and intent of the characters and plot of the game, however, it takes this to a whole different level of feeling good. Whereas most of the video games--> anime (Power Stone, Star Ocean) have shabby art and look onerous and absurd, this one is easy to watch, easy on the eyes, and very true to the game. My only worry is how they could possibly hope to capture a 70 hour game in an anime...but they will probably just leave out most of the fighting and leveling!

The introduction song is the same as the game's, but sung by a different person and more quickly, so do not let it bother you too much that it is not as amazing.

EDIT: oh god, except Anise: I just got to her, and her voice is horrendous. First bad thing in an incredible anime...:'(

Well, while I am not a huge fan of Japanese voice-acting, I am totally gonna get this because I can just see just how good TotA will be as an anime. Getting eps 1 and 2 atm!

FUCKING MIEU OH MY GOD @_@

I watched it last week. I think I'm going to follow gg's subs if they're quick enough. The show seems MUCH better than the other Tales anime OVAs. Probably because this one is going to be a full length 26 episode series rather than the 4 episode bullshit we got with Phantasia. Symphonia is beyond saving at this point as well.

I'm probably going to watch a few episodes of this and see how I like it. I thought TotA's cast of characters was a little weak (with the exception of Jade), but I'm still interested to see how the adaption will turn out.

Oh, and the anime version of the opening is excellent, much better than that of the game.

gg does seem to be the fastest. And their quality is pretty good afaik. I can't speak Japanese so who cares. They don't have any glaring grammar issues in English at least. They have episode 3 out.

Fishin, I actually thought Abyss' cast was pretty strong. I liked Tear, Jade, and Guy. The overall cast was pretty well developed, especially their relationships with each other and the God-Generals.

FUCKING ANISE OH MY GOD

<.< Except that this time i said that was because her voice was terrible

Other then that it was awesome

Well personally neither the animation nor the art stood out to me. From what i have read Abyss's storyline and characters were also pretty weak compared to other Tales games, but then I did not play it personally so I might be wrong here. While it might be one of the best RPG -> Animes, that isn't saying much since most of them are notably horrible (lol Drunga).

But then there is hardly any point in arguing over anime with CK since we won't agree anyway.

I already knew the Japanese voices, but Anise's more annoying here than she was in the game. She was relatively ok in the game, but here she sounds a lot more excitable.

Arietta's probably gonna kill my eardrums again. Jade's voice actor is still the best ever, though.

Personally I think ToTA has one of the better casts in RPGs. They're all developed, have a backstory, and no one in the party really struck me as boring or irritating.

Ah friggin Telus. I had a post typed out but my internet died and I lost it all. Anyway:

Chronicles, Abyss' cast is widely regarded as the strongest in the series. The storyline in Tales games are quite shoddy but Abyss has a pretty decent one that's hurt mostly by its technical mumbo jumbo that will confuse just about anyone not involved in the development of the game.

The biggest problem with Abyss were its load times (not a problem in an anime obviously) and some pacing issues at one point in the game where you're asked to backtrack extensively for no good reason (also shouldn't be a problem in the anime).

The art is not 'exceptional', because most anime have incredible art - it is what it is, simply gorgeous art that is not ever detractive (except maybe the ship..they did kind of a poor job animating that, I thought).

The animation of the introduction is better, but the singer is way worse...

Eh? The OP is exactly the same as the one in the Japanese game track, down the length (the animation has changed, of course).

I thought the US version was non-lyrical.

Personally I think the production values and animation are pretty good for an RPG turned anime. In fact, I'd say having 26 episodes is a treat in itself. I've watched up to episode 3...somehow Jade being a snarky ass like he was in questioning has lost some of the hilarity it had in the game, but I'm very happy with how it's gone so far, nonetheless.

The vocals are the exact same as the JP version as far as I can tell. The US version has no vocals, but the music was more up-beat.

The English version of the opening had the same instrumentals, but with a guitar track added in and vocals removed, I think.

So...you didn't mind Anise? Actually, I suppose I was being a bit harsh on the cast before; I do like Tear, and Guy's not bad either. But Anise is incredibly annoying and (spoilers) gets forgiven way too easily.

I watched the first two episodes, though. Seems like it's a pretty good adaption, worth keeping up with.

Anise was one of my favourites. I liked her story.

The ones who I didn't like that much were Guy and Natalia, and even then I liked them.

I like Anise in game, especially when she does the *grab face and rock like crazy* action :x but even that did not translate well to the anime!

Ok. So third episode... Why the hell is the blood all glowy crap? Will the BluRay release be uncensored? It's really really weird looking. I don't usually see this in Japanese versions of anime. Maybe they're going for the kiddie crowd really badly or maybe Japan's censors have grown even larger in the last few months..

Haha, I totally forgot to comment on that - it did detract from the episode for me a lot. I figured that maybe they were going for everything being more magical..and that maybe it was...fonon blood or something.
