Australia should have won for 2022, Russia isn't that bad for 2018 though, England already get to host the Olympics and I think some Britons would actually be happy not having to deal with all the media hype.

I think that England really shouldn't have been too surprised by not winning a bid. It is really Americans who should be pissed off. The American teams good showing in South Africa created a lot of new fans of football in America. If FIFA had given the tournament to USA it might have been just the thing to create a large following of soccer in the US that has never existed. Growing up in California I support Mexico in World Cups, thats a little depressing if you think about it.

At the very least, it would show Americans what good football looks like, soccer doesn't have to be boring, but the MLS frequently is.

I don't think America should be pissed off that much, you'll probably be a lock in for 2026 whilst Australia will have to wait until 2046 in all probability.

I dont understand the logic behind Qatar either...Russia is a reasonable choice but Qatar?Deffinetly Australia or USA should have got it.

Russia is impractial, crossing the entire country would take days without flying, so therfore getting to matches would be expencive.
and england had the best bid., that was said.
qatar? there is nothing much there, and its stupildy hot.

MATCH REPORT

Ajax against a mid-table club at home, should be an easy win. Martin Jol was smart enough to let Siem de Jong be on the bench. Luis Suárez is suspended. Christian Eriksen got rest for the CL match against AC Milan on Wednesday 8 December.

In the first half, Mounir El Hamdaoui hit the crossbar twice, Lasse Schone was close to a goal twice. Maarten Stekelenburg saved Ajax, NEC was the better team. For NEC, the French left back Rémy Amieux gave some good balls in the air, NEC got some chances to score with headers.

In the second half, NEC was better too. Miralem Sulejmani hit the post. On the other side, Schone hit the post, and out of a counter after that, Mido scored with a beautiful header: 1-0. Two minutes later, Gregory van der Wiel placed the ball in the feet of NEC player Nuytinck, who scored 1-1. Jan Vertonghen headed on the post and Maarten Stekelenburg saved an undeserved point for Ajax.

Ajax should've lost with 0-4 or 0-5, but the best goalie in the world prevented it.

A lack of effort was the problem. Those f*cking millionaires have to work for their f*cking money, most of them don't deserve even 1 Euro per year!

Chris Hughton sacked and we are not happy one little bit. Expect some protests outside St James.' Our goal coming into this season was to avoid relegation and we've been performing above anybody's expectations so what the hell is Mike Ashley thinking? For the first time since Sir Bobby Robson left the team has playing together as a unit and that's likely to go out the window now. Absolutely furious.

We drew with Chelsea last week, beat Sunderland 5-1, won away to Arsenal and beat Villa 6-0. We've had a bit of a slump lately but that's because we've been without our first choice central midfielders (Nolan and Barton) and our first choice centre-backs (Collocini and Williamson). It's an outrage.

Seriously thats crazy, Ashley sure is good ruining Newcastle. Hughton has done a great job there after winning championship last year ( which is no easy feat) and getting them up to fifth in epl this year with some great results. The irony here is that he probably got sacked because he's success raised Ashley's expectations.

It seems to me that this has been mostly decided around the World Cup rather than all football, since (as is said in the article), there are 7 of the Spanish world cup winning team and 5 of the Germans in there, whereas there are no Italians, Englishmen or French players, whose nations all did poorly in South Africa. The only names there of people who didn't really stand out as being that good to me at the world cup but are very good for their clubs are Ronaldo, Drogba and Eto'o, whereas there are a lot of people like Gyan, Muller and Ozil who I hadn't even heard of before this tournament (which may be because I don't follow the Bundesliga or Ligue 1, although I do still hear about most of their best players.)

You're linking to an article that is over a month old. The shortlist has since been narrowed down to 3 candidates - Messi, Xavi and Iniesta. Congratulations to Barcelona I suppose.

You'd expect Messi to win it but, like you mentioned, the World Cup has a lot of sway over this decision and Messi had a bad tournament by his standards whereas Xavi and Iniesta were brilliant.

haha I probably should've checked the date on that article, I saw that it said that it was being narrowed down today but I thought it would be happening later for some reason.

Xavi should win it. He's the best central midfielder in the World, he knows where he should put the ball and he does it better than everyone. Besides, Messi without him would never be considered the best.

The reason Hughton was sacked was Newcastle wants a more experienced coach. Before the start of the season, Newcastle wanted to get a more experienced coach (Juande Ramos and Martin Jol were candidates, according rumors). But they didn't find another one and kept Hughton, who is sacked unfairly. He did well, and even relegating would not be a disgrace from a club that promoted this season. And being #11 is great for Newcastle United.

Wow, I was expecting at least Puyol or Pique, they were pretty good defenders, better than Lahm, and I like Germany over Spain.
I still reckon if it was based on the World Cup more than anything than I reckon

Anyway about the three candidates, I would think that Xavi would win, as long as they arent as corrupt as they were lately

Martin Jol has left Ajax by 'mutual consent'. What's your opinion on this, Altaria?

(also newcastle manager right there then?)

Martin Jol resigned, the chairman and the direction did not fire him.

Ajax hooligans were against Jol, each time after a draw, loss or goal against, "Martin, je moeder is een hoer!" (which means: "Martin, your mother is a whore").

Most Ajax-fans were waiting for this for months, blaming Jol and not the players for every loss, draw or lucky win.

Johan Cruijff is anti-Jol, writing columns each week about why Jol should resign/be sacked.

People in the media always call Jol a coach purely working for the money. Jol resigned himself, he won't even get 0,01 Euro (one Euro cent).

This is the end of Luis Suárez and Mounir El Hamdaoui. Luis would've gone to AC Milan (then there would be no Robinho), but stayed because of Martin Jol. Mounir said he went to Ajax because of Martin Jol.

Martin Jol is not the blame of the crisis in Amsterdam. The players didn't do their best (some exceptions discounted). The coach is not guilty, the players didn't do their best when other coaches were active.

The last 10 years, 10 coaches (discounting the current interim-coach Frank de Boer) have been active for Ajax, and all were either sacked or resigned.

Martin Jol

"With a heavy heart I am saying goodbye to this beautiful club. Last year we started something, which I would dearly liked to have finished off. However, I have begun to see that after last season, the bar has been set too high.

"We cannot live up to expectations and I regret that. The incessant criticism that the club is enduring on a daily basis has created a climate of unrest within the club and the squad.

"I am announcing this before we play against Milan, The coming weeks are very important and I hope that something will happen within the squad in the short term that transforms them once more into a winning side."

The BMJ will not go to Newcastle. If he goes to a club outside of the Netherlands, he'll probably go to a subtopper or a top club, which he deserves.

So Newcastle fans, don't expect Martin. If he comes to your club, congratulations!

Hamburger SV is doing bad with their coach Armin Veh. Martin Jol will probably go there. In the season 2008/2009, Jol was coach of HSV and performed really good.

We don't want Jol. He left Tottenham in the relegation zone - in England at least, he is regarded as a subpar coach.

Remember Martin Jols top years in England, two times #5.

In the Netherlands, he made relegation candidate RKC Waalwijk a subtopper for the six years he worked there (1998-2004) and RKC relegated immediately in the first season without Martin Jol.

What Jol achieved for Ajax.

2009-2010

A perfect season. Ending #2 (preround CL) with awesome football, one point behind champions FC Twente. Ajax got 85 points out of 34 games. If referees were fair, Ajax would be champions. Also, Jol wins the Dutch cup. In a two leg final, Feyenoord is beaten with 2-0 in Amsterdam and 1-4 in Rotterdam.

2010-2011

A good season start. 16 points in 6 games. And reaching CL. Then, players didn't do their best anymore, the football became worse and the results worsened. Martin Jol resigned.

Summarized.

- Dutch cup.
- #2.
- CL.

Martin did an awesome job.

Messi should win it but i don't think he will, there were plenty of times in La Liga last season where Xavi and Iniesta especially went missing and Messi was the one who single handed dragged Barcelona to victory.

Contrary to popular belief he also didn't have a bad World Cup either he set up the majority of Argentina's goals and was the reason they got so far in the first place. They would have struggled to get out of the group stages without him, especially with the crappy defence Maradona brought along.

Its not like he was surrounded by players he plays with every week at Barcelona like Xavi and Iniesta were.
They were both really quiet in the World cup till the last two games, it was David Villa, Sergio Ramos and Xabi Alonso who carried Spain to the Semi finals.

Sneijder should have been in the final 3 over Iniesta he won the Serie A, was a major part in Inter's Champions League win including destroying Chelsea. He also helped carry Holland through the would cup and got them past Brazil who up to that point were by far the most impressive team in the world cup

It honestly won't help or be bad for Jol and Newcastle if they come together. Its not like they're suddenly going to be having a better season.

Xavi all the way!
Im somewhat dissapointed that Iniesta was chosen over snijder as well. Both his club and international performence were so good :[.

yeah it was a huge surprise when I heard that Chris Hughton was sacked. Newcastle were having a pretty good season overall (it has its ups and downs though), but I think the way Hughton was treated was unfair.

Also, LIVERPOOL win 3-0 against Villa at Anfield with Gerrard and Caragher injured and Torres not playing =)

CL 7-12-2010

FC Twente - Tottenham Hotspur 1-0
Werder Bremen - Internazionale 0-0

SL Benfica - Schalke 04 2-2
Olympique Lyon - Hapoel Tel Aviv 3-1

Manchester United - Valencia CF 2-0
Bursaspor - Glasgow Rangers 0-2

FC Barcelona - Rubin Kazan 1-1
FC Copenhagen - Panathinaikos 2-0
