The Everything NHL Thread

well this is awkward......

anyway, let's talk about something else.

A big story is developing in Sweden, and it involves our beloved Foppa, Peter Forsberg.
As part of a forthcoming documentary “#21 Peter Forsberg”, he admitted that in the 2006 Olympics in Turin, the Swedes kind of, well, maybe tanked a game against Slovakia to have an easier road from there to the gold medal.
A loss to Slovakia in the preliminary round, and Sweden would have drawn Switzerland in the quarterfinals. So, the heavily favored Swedes lost 3-0 to the Slovaks, and thus avoided having to play Canada or Russia earlier. As it turned out, the Swedes beat the Swiss, the Czechs and the Finns to win the gold medal. Russia played Canada in the quarterfinals, with the Russians winning. Sweden beat Switzerland 6-2.

The following is a google translation of an article up now on the Swedish newspaper site, Expressen.

“We maybe discussed within the group will probably it “is better if we do not go out and charge us too much.” All knew that this was our chance. We did all that was needed to win the tournament,” says Forsberg. “I think you can blame the whole system.”

I hope there is something lost in the translation, because it would hurt Forsberg’s and Sweden’s reputation if they really did tank it. But I know that reporters in Sweden are making a big deal of this. Wonder what Team Canada members Joe Sakic, Rob Blake and Adam Foote think of this?

soft euros??? or solid strategy

If some maturity was lost in the conversation, so be it. I'll take it, it relativizes a bit more my presence on Pokémon forums.

No more pictures of me? I like this one too... although about as old as the other.. Good lord I look young.

ET was right, I think I need new pictures.

Sadly got to say that was a smart move by the Swedes. It probably wasn't as much tanking as it was 'not trying their hardest'.

Great signature :)

Positive signs for Giroux owners / fans, he's practicing with them already. Crosby should take notes.

EDIT: Yes, I'm actually suggesting that Giroux has an amazing strategy to make you feel better.

Man, how do poopmobile/Vineon/J-man/that other guy always manage to turn this thread into a trainwreck like every other page?

Yeah Crosby, why don't you learn how to NOT have concussion-related symptoms. Obviously there is some super amazing strategy that Giroux knows to make you instantly feel better. Don't worry about your future, just get on the ice!

Kind of flattered that Trotz compared the Wings to the 08 Wings the other day... I'm pretty sure we aren't that close to that powerhouse team though, but flattery is flattery and me likey.

I definitely think Sweden made the right play there if they threw it(though I am/was kind of expecting that to be an unpopular response). I agree with Forsberg in that there's some systemic issues if Sweden would have essentially been punished for trying and winning by getting tougher competition, but I think it all works out in that it is some of the reward of winning your first two games to have some control over where you end up -- they earned the right to be in that position. I know there's the whole honor angle and fans paying to watch the game and everything but I think the bottom line should be that they were there to win gold and anything they can do that isn't actual cheating should be done.

There's some gaming tournaments I follow that have a similar group/elimination format to what Olympic hockey does so I've kind of had my opinion on this sort of thing strengthened by watching events that follow this format -- so many weird situations where heavy favorites hit each other in the first or second round of elimination play because of stacked qualification groups or one bizarre game in qualification, definitely much smarter for the teams involved to try to orchestrate the best path to the end they can. I don't really view this as much of a sportsmanship/validity issue, anyway: they still have to win all the other matches they play legitimately, after all.

Frankly, I don't care if he's God's gift to hockey coaching or not and he probably is a great guy but we haven't had a coach that couldn't speak a word of French in 40 years and that's a trend that was just broken.

Ah, see, I just automatically assumed he could speak French because they hired him. That's dumb.

The next 24/7 will probably include the 6-0 boston loss, possibly coutourier's injury, and possibly the embarrassing Avs defeat today? Sounds exciting. But really, how small are those problems compared to the universe?

Fixed for you

Canucks and Bruins are on a hell of a roll right now, with only one regulation loss in their past 10-11 games or whatnot. On Jan 7th, an unstoppable force meets an unmovable object.

That is until either of them meet the actual hottest team in the league, YOUR chicago blackhawks

Wait, the same Hawks who are two goals away from giving up 100 goals in 34 games with the third worst GA in the western conference, and whose division rival has one game in hand and the same amount of wins as the Hawks? Pass.

past 11 games no team has been better than the hawks, especially not the detroit old wings

Because the Kings, Ducks, Flames, Pylon-ders, and Sharks are so menacing... 44 GF, 27GA

Actually, you're wrong, the Wings have been far more impressive in THEIR last 11 games...

46 GF, 23 GA AND they beat the Bruins earlier this year as well.

Eat crow pope.

hmm, let's talk hockey then

Sharks are way better than those other teams. Let's look at who Detroit played their last 11 games: Edmonton, Kings, struggling Predators (who they lost to lol), a badly injured Penguins team, Jets, bottom-feeder Lightning, and a loss to the awful Avalanche

cool

6 goal differential against an easier schedule, plus an extra loss. Bruins victory was a shootout win, next. FAR MORE IMPRESSIVE

sure, whatever you say

Eat crow pope.

Sharks are 8th and aren't scoring many goals (and according to your logic, since it was a SO win, its value is trivial). Edmonton thrashed the Hawks 9-2 earlier this year as I recall and can very much make the playoffs still. Kings are still in it despite poor performances. Preds are 7th in the West and are very much not struggling (I don't know where you got that garbage from), AND If you talk to any Preds or Wings fan, both will tell you that was the FLUKIEST win/loss ever. Penguins still have their stars minus Crosby and proved last year they can win without him. Lighting, I think, were just out of a playoff spot when we beat them (though I could be wrong), and the Aves are right out of a playoff spot, so I'm not sure how they are awful.

I love your uneducated and highly opinionated BS. Go read stuff before you spout your mouth off.

every team is "still in it" at this point, who cares. Obviously you aren't really following hockey because half those teams are "still in it" despite being awful lately (Tampa, Edmonton, Kings, Penguins to an extent, and Avalanche). Pretty much all of those teams started off hot and dropped off lately, putting them "right out of a playoff spot". Follow the sport before you try and rattle off bullshit.

And yeah, the hawks had a stretch of 4-5 games where they let in a ton of goals, leading to a highly inflated GA stat. It happens. IIRC the Red Wings lost over 5 in a row at one point.

edit: basically you follow the red wings for the entire year, and when you try to make a point about other teams you look quickly at the standings and go from there. If this weren't the case, you would know that the Sharks are much better than their record (plus games in hand), and will very likely win the Pacific division over the Stars who have been about as inconsistent as a team can get. Same with all of the "still in it" or "right out of a playoff spot" comments.

and then you call other people out on being "highly uneducated". okay kid

This is my last post on the subject matter because I'm tired of dealing with people like you.

I care, because there's a crap ton of parity in this league now, so getting into the playoffs is much more difficult. Last year, the Stars got 95 pts and didn't make the playoffs. Obviously, there's some importance in "being in it" than you'd rather it be. The Pens have not been awful at all. Give that argument up. Tampa wasn't terribad as they are now when we played them. I will concede Edmonton, I stretched that. In spite of two five game winning streaks and their thrashing at the hands of the Wings, they have lost a vast majority of their games by one or two goals. They are one of the best teams on defense and have some wins against good teams (Wild, Sharks, Rangers, Stars, Blues). They are definitely more quality opponents than the Islanders are. The Aves are actually doing pretty decent and have been playing decent. The only big blip on the radar was a 5? game losing streak in November.

And yeah, the hawks had a stretch of 4-5 games where they let in a ton of goals, leading to a highly inflated GA stat.

It's actually more spread out than a mere "stretch" of 4-5 games
Check the scores again, maybe you'll learn more about the defensive woes of your beloved Hawks.

too much effort to point out every single one of your mistakes . I already tried last time but you straight up ignored half my post. not sure why you think I'd keep trying
