The Everything NHL Thread

I'm beginning to think NHL threads should be banned on Smogon, along with abortion and religion

Al Montoya left the game with a possible head injury late in the second period after Evander Kane did one of those "Wait, I'm not responsible for avoiding the goalie, am I?" rushes toward the net.

Yea. Even as a huge jets fan COME THE FUCK ON BUDDY. I can't stand how players think it's reasonable to charge a goalie who does not have the proper equipment or positioning to absorb body checks.

It looked like he tried to jump and squeeze between the cross bar and Montoya. How the fuck did he expect to pull that off? I wonder if he'll get some sort of suspension.

Why do all players jump? It makes no sense unless you're aiming for their head / upper body. Jumping over them? You can't fucking clear a 6 foot goalie, it's not going to happen. Give it up.

I apologize. I tried to talk reason with popemobile. I should have realized that rarely if ever works with a homer-troll like him.

@Evander Kane stupididty....

I don't understand... Why can't the skaters just respect each other enough to think through decisions like this. There are enough stars suffering through head injuries already.

Watching the play, I'm reminded of the Tootoo hit on Miller earlier this year. Player driving hard to the net, incidental contact from a defenseman, and no attempt to avoid the goalie. I'm going to be biased in this assessment since it happened to my team's star goalie, but given the precedent set by Shanahan I do think Kane should get a game or two.

no more arguing with 15 year olds with bible quotes in their sig, I should've known better in the first place

anyway, here's the video of Kane/Montoya

Really similar situation to Tootoo. Kane is a first time offender I think, so he'll probably get one game at most. Contact looked incidental again, although it seems even more likely that he was pushed into the goalie by the defender. Maybe a fine since I don't think he has any history. Defender should really stop pushing dudes into their goalies though.

I don't really get the "stop pushing the player" defense. What is Jurcina supposed to do, let Kane walk in untouched and score? Besides, Jurcina probably pushed Kane less than Ehrhoff pushed Tootoo, all he really did was poke the puck cleanly off his stick while cutting off his path to cross directly in front of the goalie. Kane was coming with speed and there was only two ways for that to end: Jurcina does nothing and allows Kane to complete whatever move he had in mind, or do what he did and save a possible goal. These plays cannot be blamed on the defenseman, plain and simple.

Kane is a clean player, though, so I don't see a huge penalty coming his way. Probably a game at the most to keep in line with prior precedent.

It was most definitely not Kane's choice to run into Montoya and he actually did try to avoid him. He was just stupid in thinking he could clear Montoya and land in the net between Montoya's head and the net. He's a young player, and he clearly didn't intend to injure, and he was pretty mad with Jurcina, I guess implying that he got pushed.

However they should 100% give him a game or two. He's generally a clean player but he is extraordinarily cocky and doesn't take any responsibility for anything. This would benefit him, the jets, and the league.

I'm not saying don't try to stop him, but when you push a guy towards your goalie when he's going full speed, there's not much he can do but run into him. Really the only thing Kane can do is try to minimize contact, but a half second isn't much time to do that.

It's not the defender's fault really, nor is it the forward's. It's really just an unfortunate hockey play which is why I'm really hesitant to suspend anyone for it.

Also worth noting: Montoya got a concussion on the play. Without saying whether or not a suspension is deserved, Shanahan's set a precedent for adding games if injuries occur (though in the case of the Lucic-Miller play it's not a guaranteed thing).

I just want to go on record as saying the injury-no injury distinction is fucking BEYOND retarded. A dangerous play is a dangerous play is a dangerous play. Does that mean Kaleta shouldn't have been suspended for headbutting because the recipient wasn't injured? Just plain fucking foolish.

Fixed for accuracy.

I missed the start of the game. Is Giroux back?

Edit: Just heard Giroux is back and has a 3 point game. Good for the Flyers and good for the game IMHO.

One of the few players you'd compare to Sidney Crosby is Claude Giroux, he's just got the best vision, Speed, pass accuracy, and talent out of any healthy player.

How about Malkin who has fucking 15 points in 6 games. Too bad he bruises easier than an apple.

And for fantasy reasons I want the wings to win, but they are not playing great at all. Vancouver is just fucking with them (though they've let down their guard a bit, it's 3-2 since I stopped watching), Daniel Sedin shows his European roots by head'ing the puck into the zone...wouldn't that hurt?

Also can someone post a link to the new 24/7 like last time? really useful :).

I wonder if j-man is crying after Edler's/Hansen's short handed goal?

Also Lidstrom still has it. Cyborg.

Oh my fucking God Luongo

I'm sure most people will agree it was a bad call, but it was also a really good play by the canucks. What Hansen did is the difference between being completely let off (and luckily, getting a non-disallowed goal) and being suspended for charging a goalie and possibly injuring him. He drove the net hard and took out Howard by sliding into his lower body rather than jumping into his head. Again, not that it should have been allowed, but if the ref happens to give you the benefit of the doubt and thinks you were pushed, then you've just created an excellent scoring chance. Worst case scenario, the goal gets waved off for goalie interference (and they rarely give the 2 minutes for unintentional).

Kronwall's hit on Kesler was awesome though, and it looks like the Sedin's are both going to be in the running for lots of trophies....but they will likely lose them all to Claude "almost as good as Crosby" Giroux.

Any link for 24/7 ? ? I can't find one.

Wouldn't say it was suspension worth, will say we got lucky. However, the first Bertuzzi goal should have been also called goaltender interference, since Bertuzzi hits Salo in the crease onto Luongo, while White winds up for the slapshot, as Luongo is down.

If a defending player has been pushed, shoved, or fouled by an attacking player so as to cause the defending player to come into contact with his own goalkeeper, such contact shall be deemed contact initiated by the attacking player for purposes of this rule, and if necessary a penalty assessed to the attacking player and if a goal is scored it would be disallowed.

My problem with the hit on Kesler is that Kromwall leaves his feet. Other than that, clean hit.

Refs were terrible in that game, failed to rein in the players when things got chippy. Gave the Canucks no powerplays throughout the whole game which was pretty bad.

And I got your back. I present 24/7

Yea I couldn't really see the side of Salo in that play but I thought it was strange to see a 37(?) year old veteran just fall over on his goalie.

And what I meant was that Hansen made a good play by not jumping into Howard's face (like Kane and Tootoo, etc) but by sliding into his pads, not suspension worthy in the least. The only thing that should have happened is the goal disallowed.

My only concern is that coaches don't stress the difference enough, so they see plays like this and think "oh wow, I have nothing to lose if I charge a goalie and we score - it's likely to be counted!".

Also I think I have a man crush on Lunqvist.
