The Everything NHL Thread

Pretty dumb thing to say since using 1st overall is a terribly small sample size.

Why is it dumb? I think the sample is large enough to say a forward is a safer pick. Defensemen (and even moreso goalies) simply seem a bit more difficult to project.

But I'm fairly sure the teams drafting are aware of this, will pick accordingly and I don't think it will scare anyone away from picking Seth Jones. They'll still lose out to whoever picks my boy. ;o

Using the top 5 draft picks is a much better sample size as opposed to the top pick; usually, outside of years like Crosby, the number one pick isn't undisputed and it's more the needs of the team picking that decide who to pick. The top 5 is a more "safe" way of assessing the skill levels and the trajectory of a prospect at the time of the draft.

Plus, defenseman don't always blossom early in their careers unlike forwards (with a few exceptions). It's harder to say "they'll bust" like most people do after one or two given years for most players.

The TD Garden ceremony was powerful. Real good stuff and really proud of hockey fans in Boston for showing up and supporting their team, city and nation.

Here's 10 years of players we've had ample time to evaluate :

2006

1 Erik Johnson

2005

3 Jack Jackson

2004

3 Cam Barker

2003

None in the top 5 (Ryan Suter is 7th, however)

2002

3 Jay Bowmeester
4 Joni Pitkanen
5 Ryan Whitney

2001

No D in the top 5 (Mike Komisarek 8th)

2000

No D in top 5 (Lars Jonsson, first D picked at 7th)

1999

No D in top 5 (first picked : Bradislav Medei 10th)

1998

3 Brad Stuart
4 Bryan Allen
5 Vitali Vishnevski

1997

5 Eric Brewer

(Yes I left out 2008, the one year where many Ds were picked top 5 and met expectations)

well I guess at least some of the non 08s were kind of OK second pairing defenseman

or something

early d picks suck as disingenious as this is

Lot of solid players in that 2008 draft (was curious, so looked it up) but man I'm reminded again that Detroit could have had Markstrom or a few other better players instead of McCollum that year.

So turns out the idiot Oilers management was making Nugent-Hopkins play with a shoulder injury all season. On the bright side, this shows that MacTavish is at the very least more competent than Tambellini (yes not very difficult I know).

How did they come up with these terrible options? Brandon Yip? Seriously? There are a lot of notable superstars missing from some teams.

The Ducks could have Bobby Ryan, Ryan Getzlaf, Corey Perry or Teemu Selanne over any of the 2 terrible options for their team. I kind of feel like all of these terrible options are rigged for an automatic Evgeni Malkin win.

Yip/Fisher>Weber, Backstrom>Suter/Parise, Burrows>Sedins, Cogliano/Beleksey>Getzlaf/Perry, Henrique>Kovalchuk, Hagelin>Nash, Purcell>Stamkos/St. Louis. What the actual fuck? I swear they're trolling with half of these.

You know what the funniest part about all of this is? Calgary's isn't even a troll, those are legitimately their best players.

apparently the Sabres can only win important games when they don't count and neither team cares about the outcome

oh well, go Islanders/Blue Jackets!

Detroit in the playoffs again would be lame, they have nothing to gain from losing round 1 to the Hawks. Besides the only player on the team worth watching is Datsyuk. I'd much rather Columbus get a shot at winning their franchise's first playoff game.

I'm am sick of seeing Detroit in the playoffs. I want Columbus to get in because they are working real hard, and not like they are gonna win or anything, but Brobobsky might be one of those goalies that can potentially, "Steal a series".
