The Everything NHL Thread

Nabokov, even on an off year, he should have won last year anyway, will probably hit fifty wins even with boucher being less worthless than who he had behind him most of last year

Backstrom is probably the most probable other than that if they actually let him be the starter like they have been instead of platooning him with Harding

I expect him to collapse like he did in the second half of last year, to be honest. I could be wrong here, and he is certainly talented, but I'm just not a big believer in the guy, I guess. The fact he's a Ranger doesn't do much for my opinion for him, of course.

On the note of people I do like the Caps had a pretty awesome comeback, I'm not really sure I like the lines Boudreau used (Ovechkin-Fedorov-Semin immediately gets contention for best line in NHL but is pretty severe "all your eggs in one basket") but it ended up paying off in the end, in spite of looking good most of the game(well, good offensively anyway, wasn't too much defense in the third...) they were down 2-1 until Semin scored with 2:43 left. I remember thinking at the time that even though it was rather nice for me in fantasy for him to stay hot I'd much rather have had Ovechkin score as a caps fan. Then with 15 seconds left the two of them went on a 2on1 and I thought/hoped Ovechkin would fire it in but no he "passed" and hit Semin who sniped the game winner with 11s left, pretty epic comeback.

The Oilers nearly had an even better one with four straight after falling down 5-0 but they couldn't get that last goal ;_;

double posting because fuck you I'm a mod and also it's apparently the cool thing to do in this topic:

Two awesome quotes on popular hockey websites today

"Thar she blows," Ken Hitchcock joked with the Columbus Dispatch after being fined for the Jared Boll late-game instigator penalty. "All the coaches' Christmas presents just got eliminated."

“I’ve never seen that before. I guess I’ll have to autograph it and hang it up somewhere around here.”

- Boston Bruin Blake Wheeler on a bra being thrown on the ice after he recorded his first career hat trick Thursday night.

EDIT: NOPE AWESOME QUOTE HAT TRICK

From the Minneapolis Star Tribune:

Even days later, Stephane Veilleux's smooch to the head of James Sheppard in Phoenix was the source of laughter inside the Wild's locker room.

"That was some good kiss stuff from Steph," center Mikko Koivu said, laughing. "I'm not surprised it was him who did it."

The "Kiss Cam" has become a clichéd gag in most arenas. Usually with the song, "Kiss Me," playing by Sixpence None the Richer, the camera pans the crowd for couples to kiss. It usually ends with the camera landing on two teammates on the visitors' bench.

Those players usually ignore the camera, but this time, with Hot Chocolate's "You Sexy Thing," blaring, Veilleux gave the Jobing.com Arena reason to roar and applaud when he stood up, leaned over and gave Sheppard a peck on the helmet.

"It was just kind of funny," Veilleux said. "It's all for the fans. That's why I did it. We should be entertaining the fans, and I thought it would be fun for them."

Sheppard tried to keep a straight face during what at the time was a tight game, but said, "I was laughing pretty hard."

"I've never been kissed by a dude," Sheppard said. "I couldn't believe he did it.''

lol teifu

and wow this is a really fair trade you are offering me, I have to seriously mull it over. It will change my whole team lol

man fuck this 5 move per week thing ;_;

I'm cool with (and wanted) a limit but this shit isn't letting me do my annual "overreact and drop good players and pick up scrubs" quite to the extent that I want to.

it was a little too 'fair' and I've done my share of charity this season already, put what i had back before up :X i know you said you were close to accepting it earlier, if you don't want to now we should chat or something but you are afk even more than i am apparently

i kinda like it ^_________^ Its a pain in the ass occasionally but I enjoy having to ration moves, the element makes it harder to make decisions which makes it more fun ! Glad I saved a couple for the end of this week though...

So I want to deal for a wing or so, so if there is a defenseman one of you wants to pick up feel free to wheel and deal.

Arbitrary questions. I was talking to a friend about the whole +- system and penalty shots and our basic sentiment was that we liked both...except for 2 little issues.

We both think that everytime there is a penalty shot, the person who committed the foul should be penalized if the penalty shot doesn't go in. They mentioned this in the Caps game when Ovechkin hooked Drury, and I was thinking that its a pretty good point.

We also thought that the person who committed a penalty should get a -1 if the power play team scores. Not the penalty killers, just the guy who committed the penalty.

I think both would do 2 things...hopefully (in the long run) add another factor that limits stupid penalties, and hopefully curb some hooking on plays where players are driving hard towards the net.

I know I personally really get annoyed when a give and go works perfectly, only to have a lame hook screw up a play from even occuring. I'm just talking about a play, not even a goal. Just a play.

I recognize that some people consider a good hook to be a "good penalty," but I also think that it just reduces the overall flow of the game, since defenders have the "hook" as a dependable "last line of defense."

With the double fear of penalty shot (I would also assume that penalty shots might be awarded a bit more liberally, though this is really controversial so I'll just mention it on the side like this) + working short handed would help curb annoyingly lame hooking penalties.

Thoughts?

I like it better the way Chico Resch suggested it during the Devils playoff "run" last year when Madden got a shot - the team should have the option of which to take. I really don't like the double dipping aspect of what... argh I don't remember his name... suggested, but I think either/or is nice - either take the shot to regain a scoring chance that's normally as good or better than what you had, or take the power play if you think that's better. I don't think that penalty shot situations are offenses so egregious that they should spot the other team a goal indefinitely and with both the shot and the minor you're working in that direction.

Agree, have thought about this before and I have absolutely no idea why this isn't already the rule. +/- is kind of a silly statistic anyway but this makes sense.

I only half agree with this... I don't think hooks(at least when they're called...) really mess with the game that much, most teams are around 18-20% on the PP on average which is at least as likely as most of those plays resulting in a goal anyway. Trips and hooks are good penalties if they're the last resort to preventing a scoring chance but I don't think it's good to change that since there should really never be a situation where a defenseman is close enough to make a play but still helpless. Penalties as is absolutely kill teams so its not like they get off without any negative effects, good defenders don't end up in situations like this too often anyway, I don't really think there's too much of a problem. The Datsyuks and Maddens and Lidstroms and Zubovs are always going to have less PIM in spite of more takeaways because they position well and play well under the rules, and the less elite defenders out there like your McCabes are going to take penalties like this that hurt their teams and cause them to lose. System mostly works, imo.

I think you EASHLers will appreciate this

Also dear team rank 10, pick up another goalie, and dear team rank 13, I bet you guys have the best offense in the league, trade for Nabokov, once he scored a goal on the powerplay...

edit: team rank 12, nothing like putting all of your eggs in a basket full of rowdy fans

I've been trying to get better centers, and I have been offering for Kopitar and Bergeron. I even asked him if to counter if he wanted any of my guys, and he didn't. =[

Also I am interested to see how my top D produce tonight, since I have Lidstrom, Rafalski, Zubov and Markov all playing tonight.

what a load of horseshit, call more bs penalties (Franzen at 45:35, Rafalski at 59:56) to help the pens while failing to call obvious penalties the other way plz, clearly because the Wings scored on actual penalties the refs owe the Pens something.

lol uncalled tripping at 52:30 in OT, slash at 53:30 also i like how pittsburgh is routinely putting their sticks down second in draws, this is ridiculous, who needs the skills when you have the suits
