The Everything NHL Thread

he only uses players born in quebec

to make up for this he streams players

I still think that regardless of taken only Quebec players Vineon is getting roughly 80 bajillion games per week out of his players and they are/were producing. I think it would be more...fair, I suppose to all, to cap the transactions per week though because last season I think there were a couple weeks where Vin squeaked by because of have 26 players on his roster. Obviously I understand his idea and that he is limited but, you see my point?

is vineon even doing that again this year? i remember him saying he didn't want to put as much energy into it again.

Uhh if vineon decides to only use quebec players that is his decision =/

I mean, streaming players is a pretty lame fantasy "strategy" but I might be in the minority here in my beliefs

also lets hear other opinions on the bench spots...usually only the top 12 people on waivers are even playable. So taking them out would mean having to pick up like wade belak

I'm definitely in favor of keeping the default, while I hate trying to debate the arbitrary arbitrariness of an arbitrary cap like 4 bench slots, I don't think it's really that arbitrary to only have four arbitrary extraneous players for a variety of reasons.

The main issue here I think is that there is no such thing as a bench player in fantasy hockey - you're using everyone in those four slots every time they play anyway so it's more of a utility slot than a bench anyway and as such you're judging utility between players. Especially the idea of "needing" a backup goalie is pretty silly, there's only 30 starting jobs in the NHL anyway so at 2 goalies per team that only leaves us with six leftover, and while some teams have two usable goalies because of tandems or goalie identity crises, there's a lot of "bad" fantasy goalies who see a lot of time and even then many owners choose to pick 3 goalies - using the public league I drafted in the other day for an example the highest rated goalie on the board according to yahoo is Jimmy Howard, who is Detroit's 3rd string goalie. There's a few people on the board I would say are more valuable than him, but the starting goalies still on the board(Lehtonen, Kolzig/Smith, Ersberg) aren't drafted for a reason.

Even at the other positions there's a pretty disappointing waiver wire right now and you have to figure at any given time at least four or five, probably more like eight or nine fantasy caliber players at any given position(defenseman was a big one with injury issues last year and it already sucked in fantasy) and there have to be people at least halfway decent on waivers so there aren't just massive gaps every time someone gets hurt. Using that public league again, the best forwards on the waiver wire are viktor kozlov, mike modano, dan cleary, dustin penner, and david clarkson who are pretty solid real life player sbut not exactly heavy fantasy contributers at this point(although penner, clarkson, and cleary all have potential to be).

This is one of several issues I think the default is just fine on.

Also in Be a Pro NHL 09 news I figured I'd make an update post mostly because everyone has been suffering through the incompetence that is the AHL teammates and I though I'd offer some light at the end of the tunnel as far as your teammates being less retarded in the pros. The opposing goaltenders(FUCK YOU FLEURY OH MY GOD) are definitely better too, but it's nice to see things even out a bit... here are my stats in each for reference, both in fifteen games on D.

AHL 12g 5a 17p 6 PIM +7
NHL 11g 12a 23p 22 PIM +12

My stats are kinda skewed because I'm coming off a hat trick against the Sabres(scored with 50s~ left and then again 50s~ into OT on a breakaway dangle type deal and then on a wraparound in two nice goals i shouldn't be doing as a defenseman but my teammates were NOT getting the job done ok)

Also for what it's worth I'm curious if all goalies do this(I know my AHL backups didn't) but Brodeur has been super active with loose pucks much like he is IRL - he hasn't been afraid at all to go behind the net or toward the top of the face off circles to fish pucks out within several inches of opposing players. At times I feel like he has Dominik Hasek syndrome but it's worked out nicely so far so I won't complain yet!

Quick question, can the online draft be around the same time as last year (which was about 1:00 AM in the night for me), currently it is about 4:30 AM on a possible working day :p

edit: Nvm, didnt notice it was set on european time.

Well I restart my Pro because I didn't like how I was from Canada (dumb reason), but my team and my player played way better overall. I just got called up to the Duck after playing 12 games with the Iowa Chops.

12 Games
10 Wins
5 Goals
11 Assists
16 Points
65 PIM
+17
9 Fights
186 Hits

for my Defensive Defenseman, though I'm going to be playing behind Pronger for now on =/.

Anyway I hope our team is a mix of positions and we don't have 6 defensemen, that wouldn't be very fun =[.

Just wow. What a difference playing with NHL players makes. It took forever, but I finally got pulled up to the Montreal Canadiens. I think what finally got me to the biggest stage was my extra effort to become a better 2 way player. My defensive effort the last 15 games has been much improved as well as my checking.

Anyway, just to show how much of an improvement better teammates are:

Hamilton Bulldogs:
42 Games Played
44 Goals (4 PPG, 2 SHG, 14 GWG, 1 GTG)
6 Assists
50 Points
0 PIMs
+13

Montreal Canadiens:
5 GP
6 Goals (1 PPG, 1 SHG, 1 GTG)
4 Assists
10 Points
0 PIMs
+8

I played the first game with my top line center from the Bulldogs, then Plekanec came back from injury and he was my center on the 3rd line. We had some instant chemistry. Oh, and did I mention Montreal has gone 4-1 (3 of those wins being shutouts) since I joined the team. Hopefully I can keep up my 2 points per game pace since after 5 games I've already been bumped to line 2 RW. :) Playing with Higgins and Andrei Kostitsyn.

This makes me want to get nhl09 now.

As for fantasy league, I am attached to the theme I used last year so I joined a public league to continue it.

I didn't think it was a good idea to do it again this year on smogon, everybody should be playing by the same rules yet I was clearly alone playing with a different set of rules.

Not that it made me win though and getting 3rd sure had a lot more to do with half the players not being overly active.

For the fuck of it (now that my year is over) heres who I used during the season and the number of games I played them.

Notice the LW and D weakness especially, I still had fun using that theme. I was probably the only person in all of yahoo sports that at some point had a couple of those players in his team.

I used a total of 52 players ._.

OK, I'm obsessed...

10 games in with the Canadiens and here's how I'm looking:
12 Goals (2 PPG, 1 SHG, 1 GWG, 1 GTG)
9 Assists
21 Points
0 PIMs
+17

My shot percentage is a nice 22% as well. I lead the team in +/- and I'm second in goals already. Just got bumped to the first line.. I'll be playing with Koivu and Tanguay! 9-0-0-1 since joining the team.

And there's only 3 rookies in front of me in scoring:

Kyle Okposo: 51 GP, 15 Goals, 20 Assists, 35 Points
Michael Grabner: 42 GP, 11 Goals, 21 Assists, 32 Points
Eric Boguniecki: 50 GP, 10 Goals, 22 Assists, 32 Points

Calder or bust now!!!

edit: what a bunch of bitches.. i have one game where i don't register a point and i get bumped to line 2 lol. excuse me for not having those 4 extra points kovalev has.. spot me 41 games he has on me and i bet i can catch up.......................

Man I wish the Calder race looked like that for me, Bobby Ryan and Okposo are both better than a point a game(I think about 1.2~ without checking for Ryan and a little less for Okposo) which wouldn't be hard to deal with since it's pretty close to my average except I'm spotting them both 15 games, I get to play Okposo like, fourty times or something since he's in my division but I'm going to have a hard time catching Ryan I think.

Question to all NHL 09ers out there. I got the game for XBox 360 today, and have played the Be a Pro option a bit. Does my player (RW Power Forward) have to make it to the 'Pro' rank (Amateur, Rookie, Pro, [...] , Legend) to be called up to the NHL?

Also I know we're all(well at least Carl and I) reasonably obsessed with the single player be a pro mode, but we should probably start thinking about when we all want to try online out before we fall too far behind people who are getting practice!

As for today's edition of my segment of The Everything NHL 09 thread, although I'm 3 games from the All-star game I simmed ahead after I saved and apparently I'm(barely) good enough to be an all-star as a rookie so I'm kinda pumped! I was joined there by one teammate in Brodeur which I am pleased with since once of my goals this season is to make sure to get him the Vezina(hoping for Rocket, Norris, Vezina, Calder, President's and Stanley but that's asking a lot!).

I'm not completely sure about this but I'm pretty sure it's irrelevant - I was a Rookie I believe when I went up but basically if you perform well(get the stats you're supposed to get at your position with points being nice no matter what) you gradually move up from line to line and then from the top line to the NHL. The time it takes varies on a lot of things in addition to your performance I think, such as injuries above you(I've read about people getting to the pros in like five games because of top line NHL players getting hurt) and the depth your team has at your positions - I got into the pros quicker than most of the people here, but the Devils don't exactly have a blueline full of all-stars.

Ok, thanks.

And that last part is unfortunate. The Sens aren't exactly lacking in scoring forwards...

My dad is a fucking dummy and knocked over my xbox with NHL09 playing in it and now I have a huge ring on my game, so far all I noticed is no commentary during games so I hope that's all that's been affected by it.

And yeah I tried a long term sim and even though my Pro was doing fine statwise, he got bumped down about every 7 games, from 2nd line to 3rd then down to AHL, etc, etc. So it seems you have to play EVERY game.

I also discovered wrist shots > slapshots for me at least, I can never score with slapshots so I decided to use wrist shots more and my scoring has gone way up since then, mostly assists from rebounds instead of totally missing the goalie.

And I'm free whenever to play online, as long as my game holds up.

heh I just heard on Sportcentre that fletcher thinks the leafs will struggle, way to boost my confidence, o well at least ill be prepared this year instead of falsely believing they could actually win like i did for the past decade

The opposite is true for my Power Forward. While I'm still in the AHL (top line!), I will get 1-2 goals per game by hitting the blue line, and letting a slap shot rip. All-Star difficulty.

Edit: Does anyone know how it works after several years of being a Pro? By that, I mean the potential to be traded and eventual Free Agency.

Leafs might as well suck big time this year for a chance to get Tavares in the draft at the end.

Tavares is nasty, also we played together, also he is my facebook friend haha :D But the leafs getting him would be good for them but I have reason to believe L.A is going to bring up the rear this year after getting rid of so many players for essentially nothing.

Last place team only has a 48ish% chance of getting Tavares.

Yeah, its just annoying because I think Tampa got lucky and had like a 1% more of a chance to get stammy then L.A. so this year I expect L.A. to be brutal and get lucky as well. Since I dont care if they are good anymore they will inevitably get better...sigh. poor vish
