The Everything NHL Thread

The answer to that question is simple. The league is so money oriented that the higher ups of the league want "hockey pockets" all over the states. This is because of the national TV contracts. Attendance doesnt matter too much because if you have teams all over the US people will watch the game. It's all about the TV contracts.
This may be true, however, the issue with TV contracts and a team from Arizona, and even your Floridas (these moreso than California based teams) is that no one in the area cares, and no one around the nation cares. Its a team, in a place where a cold game shouldnt be. They are more interested in other games. Besides, how often are the Coyotes on versus, or the panthers or lightning for that matter? They arent. So get the to a place where people actually WANT to watch the games on TV for teams that they support and care about. In any case, at this point, I have no faith in the league management and I fully believe that they will do everything in their power to make the league worse...
Did you guys want a thread for NHL '10 in IR so you can talk about the game specifically or should I post stuff here? >.> There are two producer interviews out now.
Also, just post here.

Everyone needs to keep in mind that in the 1990s the difference in value between the Canadian and American dollars was a lot more significant than it is now. The Nords and Jets were moved to America because the teams had fallen on dire economic times and they were looking to expand the American market. The move to Colorado was a great one, but moving to Phoenix was highly questionable at the time and has proven now to have been staggeringly stupid.

The dollars are much closer in value now, and none of the other Canadian teams are having problems. Failing American teams need to be moved to Canada, that's the bottom line.

Nothing substantial, but grabbed this off another forum:
# PS3 Music Customizable playlists confirmed.
# No more tape to tape passes
# New stuff with goalies (animations, saves)
# Tougher to score
# New Dynasty Features

That's the notes that the user got out of these two videos:

And this is not really posted anywhere, but it's a question I got to qualify me for a focus test of the game:

To me, it sounds like they might be thinking of a trading cards or "level up towards goals" system. Early stages of it anyway.

Atlanta will definitely die out if Kovalchuk can't be signed.
Atlanta is a joke even with Kovalchuk, and you would think the league officials would notice this. Nope, all star game (recently) no one wants to go there to see that. Same with Tampa Bay (I think 2001). The league really needs to move those teams that vin mentioned with the exception of the islanders, I think, somewhere else.

lol, if the Islanders didnt have the lowest attendance in the NHL then I would believe 3 NY teams is viable. There is one too much imo.

Yes I'm aware the Islanders not winning do not help their case.

I actually was a Nordiques fan 'nearly' reformed into an Habs 'fan'.

Besides, I needed to list 6 teams to fit my earlier suggestion to cut back to 24 teams..... I guess Raleigh is borderline as well..... but nah, we don't need 3 NY teams.

The Islanders might get some attendance if they stopped getting rid of any good player they come by. If they hold on to Tavares (I doubt they will) people might actually go to see them.

They do have some good young players however they had arguably the worst GM ever in Mike Milbury who set them back pretty far.

Here is a nice list.

1- Roberto Luongo & Ollie Jokinen for Mark Parrish & Oleg Kvasha, then passing on taking Dany Heatley or Marion Gaborik and instead drafting Rick DiPietro at # 1 knowing he would have been there at # 5.

2
. Zdeno Chara & the draft pick that would have been #2 and probably Jason Spezza for Alexi Yashin. Then signing Yashin to a 10 Year contract, that had to be bought out by the Islanders because Yashin's production was so poor.

3
. Trading Todd Bertuzzi & Bryan McCabe for an old, slow Trevor Linden

4
. Taking Robert Nilsson over Zach Parise in the 2003 Entry Draft.

5
. Trading Raffi Torres for Janne Niniimaa

6
. Letting Martin Straka go on waivers rather than signing him for 40K

7
. Trading JP Dumont to the Chicago Blackhawks for Dimitri Nabokov. Nabakov played all of 30 games for Islanders amassing 4 goals & 11 assists.

8
. Drafting Michael Rupp with the 9th pick of the 1998 draft then not signing him to contract. He went back into the 2000 draft and was picked by the NJ Devils with a 3rd round pick. He is still playing for the Devils today.

That is a pretty impressive list imo. The fact that they were able to fuck up so many times just shows you something...

#3 worked out pretty well for the Canucks. They got Linden back for basically nothing a year or two later <3

Not to mention Bertuzzi was awesome for us until around 2004!

Man, Sportchek is clearing out the old-style jerseys for $40 each. They had Linden versions mixed in with all the un-named ones. But when I went to the counter apparently it didn't apply to the Linden ones :( Got my hopes up so high.

The torres trade was kind of a wash, that guy turned out to be a nobody anyways. So it was a useless idiots traded for the most vowel-abusive named player I've ever seen? Fair deal indeed.

The Isles would get more attendance if we moved into a new coliseum. We've been pretty good about the trading since Snow took over (although Comrie and Campoli for McAmmond was a bit suspect), and I think we'll be a strong team in three or five years if we continue to develop our core the way we're doing.

We sucked for quite a bit before we won our cups!

Im sure the Islanders can improve their situation, I find it unlikely however that all 3 NY teams can successfully be profitable at the same time.

The Rangers are untouchable, the Islanders or Devils are that extra team, depending on who is losing at the moment. NY is a great hockey market... for 2 teams.

I agree with you vineon, though the devils have been more consistently competative for the last two 'generations' of hockey (during and post scott stevens, the benchmark of all players). The problem is that the NHL dislikes moving teams that have stanley cups...I don't recall any in the last 60 years that have moved after winning a cup.

hockey world championship final : Canada vs Russia.... as it should be
The Swedes might have won it if they had all the Swedish Red Wings which is a lot (Lidstrom, Zetterberg, Franzen, Holmstrom, etc) and Lundqvist in net of course the other teams could have benefitted from playoff players but the Swedes would have had the biggest boost IMO
