The Everything NHL Thread

I somehow lucked out and have tomorrow off so I am eager for free agency!

I'm not sure about Cammy - obviously out of Calgary, but there's so many teams who could use him since he shouldn't command the ridiculous salary the real franchise players have... he'll be interesting. I'm still a little skeptical about whether or not those flames sign Boumeester, too, which is a whole new can of worms for them...

Looks like happy trails to Conklin unfortunately, hope he ends up somewhere he gets to play more - the guy deserves it. Hoping they drop Samuelsson, and who even knows about Hossa anymore...

And god damn I hope my Caps actually make a move! Hard to predict any of this shit though, tomorrow will be fun.

I mostly posted as a reminder that if we do want to do a keeper or dynasty league we should probably start figuring format and rules out ASAP, so if anyone has some feedback/opinions on that...

Montréal's GM was apparently very close to a deal to get Lecavalier.

Will they goddamn stop teasing me.

Scott Gomez?????????

Tarbarnak, fuck me.

I never ever liked him and he is tremendously overpaid.... moreover, his stupidly demanding salary means dropping the ball on others.

While I'm sure we'll still get blown out this year, looking it over I'm really pleased with Team USA's selections. Burke did a nice job - I think we're fooling ourselves if we think we have a real shot at winning, but in general he picked the right players to get experience and I think we'll be real competitive in four and eight years. We're lacking the superstars, for sure, but if a lot of these young guys become what they can be we'll be real dangerous I think.

As for this year, I think if I were the coach I'd set up something like this...

Forwards

Kessel-Stastny-Kane
Parise-Gomez-Langenbrunner
Ryan-Drury-Brown
Bfyuglien-Kesler-Modano

Okay, so maybe the scoring lines are going to look pretty sad when you look at potential ovechkin-datsyuk-malkins and heatley-crosby-iginla type star power, but that's not the matchups we'd be fighting for. Power vs. Power won't work, and the US has a surprisingly good checking unit with Byfuglien, who did a nice job on Chicago's checking line this year, Selke candidate Kesler, and the best US forward of all time, who has always been pretty strong both ways. The devils reunion line was one of the more productive NHL line 1's with an inferior Zajac in the middle, but it's pretty weak for an olympic line-up. From a pure skill perspective I'd put Bobby Ryan(who plays more LW than Kessel) on line 1 as he is absolutely a stud, but I like the line 3 I have there because it is big and mean and very difficult to play against, and while Canada is probably a little too big for it I could see it doing well pushing around some of Russia's softer scorers if given the opportunity while grinding out some offense of its own.

Scratches: David Backes (who will take Modano's spot in 4 years), David Booth (he passes less than moi ok), Ryan Callahan, Joe Pavelski, T.J. Oshie, and Kyle Okposo. Those last two could definitely compete for scoring roles.

Defenseman

Rafalski-Martin
Suter-Whitney
J. Johnson-Komisarek

I'm a little more lost with the defensemen because there's so much youth here... the blue line will probably be the team's weakness this year, but once some of the super talented young guys get another 4 and 8 years of NHL experience this is going to be a sick blue line, with this top pairing gone for a total youth movement in the next olympics. Rafalaksi is the only elite defenseman on the roster, but Suter and Whitney both had really nice seasons and this blue line(outside of Rafalski) is if nothing else big and strong defensively, encouraging the idea that for an Olympic team the US might need play real tight defensively.

Scratches: Rob Scuderi (really wanted to include him), Erik Johnson (he'll be here in four years), Ron Hainsey (probably him, too), Tim Gleason, Tom Gilbert, Brooks Orpik

Goalies

Tim Thomas
Ryan Miller
Jonathan Quick

Think there's a fairly obvious depth chart here after Thomas won the Vezina, but both he and Miller are solid choices. Thomas, of course, isn't likely to be around in 4 years when it counts, so I rather hope Miller gets the lion's share of play time even though he'll be the second best goalie on the team...

Heatley has been traded apparently (not quite confirmed):

According to TSN and Sportnet.ca, the Ottawa Senators have traded disgruntled forward Dany Heatley to the Edmonton Oilers for forwards Andrew Cogliano, Dustin Penner and defenseman Ladislav Smid.

Jackal will likely be devastated by Cogliano moving, but are you kidding me? Not only is that a gross underpayment by Edmonton but... they managed to move Penner's salary too???? I'm even more amazed by this than watching Gomez's move!

But man, I sure am looking forward to watch Heatley-Horcoff-Hemsky Souray-Visnovski on the PP! That'll be worth the price of admission for sure!

Just the thought of getting a big name such as Heatley is pretty exciting for me, as it would for any Oiler fans. We haven't lost any really big names here either. You could maybe argue against Cogliano, but I never thought highly of him.

Either way, this should make our next season more interesting.

Apparently Heatley doesn't want out of Ottawa that badly, stupid no-trade clause.

Ouch, that's a huge slap to Edmonton. It really does seem that no one wants to play there...

Hoping the Sedins still want to play in Vancouver, but I think Ohlund will be gone. It seemed like he was being asked to start playing a lesser role on the team and he didn't want that.

I go to the number 1 hockey high school in toronto and we HATE the sens lol, and cogliano not only went to my school but presented the trophies at the athletic banquet.

I really hope this doesn't happen for his sake, another of our own (Spezza) is already having his talent put to waste on the sens...

Bummed it looks like that Oilers trade is fucked, and I really like this commentary about it from Mark Spector

“Steve Tambellini must be livid that the names came out in this deal,” said the scout.

You can look Andrew Cogliano in the eye if you’re the Oilers GM and say, “Son, you have to give up a god player to get a 50-goal scorer, and you’re that good player. We meant no disrespect.”

But Penner? What are you going to say to him?

“Well, Dustin, we tried to dump your enormous contract. But looks like we’ll have to keep on pitching.”

Kind of a double burn on the Oilers there, but I guess you can blame the media for that!

In other news, Sedins resign in Vancouver at a less ridiculous price than expected, and little birds are saying Ohlund to Tampa in a deal that is far too long. I'd love the signing for like four years, but that's aggressive, even if that blue line needs a ton of help. But you wonder why they traded Boyle to begin with...

Indeed, as an Oilers fan, it is a huge slap in the face. Heatley, you can go suck a fat one, in whatever goddamn city you choose, and still the fans will boo you for being a dick. Get your goddamn ferrari and drive it into another place with just yourself.

Sorry for the harsh rant, but I am pissed off.

Sedins resign, Ohlund signs with TB. TB has a good def corps now.

Hard to say whose fault it is. If Heatley still had to okay the deal, why was the news even released to the media? They had no doubts he was going to waive his NTC?

Keeping the Sedins was ridiculously important, that's two 80 point players and our top line with Burrows locked up for at least 4 years.

The Ohlund deal makes sense because the contract is front loaded with most of the money in the first 5 years. They probably expect him to retire and not play the last 2 years, so it's just structured that way to lower the cap hit. He'll probably be mentoring Hedman.

Heatley: I WANT A TRADE QQ
GM: Okay, how bout Edmonton?
GM and Tambellini sort out deal
Heatley: FUCK THAT SHIT, I WANT ANOTHER TEAM
Right, it's not heatley's fault for being a drama whore/a pickyass player. He told the GM he wanted to be traded. It's a goddamn contract, you don't play the wishlist game.

Anyways, I agree with the Sedin deal. Good deal for Vancouver. Burrows can keep his production up (future 40 goal scorer maybe), and with prospects like Hodgson, Vancouver's looking to be a contender.

It's nice to see the Oilers aren't getting screwed on a trade for once (even if it is unconfirmed).

Well, as it stands now, with all the media leaks and misinformation, Murray looks like an idiot. Tambellini looks like an idiot. Heatley looks like a spoiled brat (which he probably is), And there are three players in Edmonton that know they were being used for trade bait. What a mess.

I seriously don't fucking get it though, what is it about Edmonton? The weather? Management? The direction the team is going? We have some good young prospects, and one of the best rinks in the league, And the weather here is really no worse than any other city in Canada.

If Heatley decides he wants to come to Edmonton after all, do we really want him after this shenanigan? Seems to me that he'd be the equivalent of an Avery in the dressing room after this.

Unfortunately I live in Vancouver, where they take every moment to shit on the Oilers :(

Craig Mactavish is always pictured as the stupid coach. Someone showed me this gif with him and a starcraft based on. Something about "Must construct more pylons". Hahaha...

Roloson=Roloshit in their books compared to Luongo.

Penner=lol. No explanation needed there.

Pretty much, every canadian team chooses to take a shit on the Oilers for whatever reason (even though we made it to the cup finals last time). Even toronto and Ottowa, which is pretty sad.

Edit: and I don't want Heatley in Edmonton. WHat a dick he is... Here's for a good free agent signing/trade.

Rolly leaving hurts too, officially the time for... the new guy who's name I'm not even going to try to spell.

And that's a good point, too, Arti, but the media is such vultures these days, I'm not sure if you can hold info in even if you want to... but they sure didn't seem to want to.

I'm a little confused about Hossa to the Hawks - I need to play with their cap a bit, but I am almost completely positive they can't afford to do this over the long term. Signing him so long gets him to a pretty decent cap number ("only" 5.3 a year for 12 years, although that's going to be pretty bad if he plays to the end of it since he'll be 42, lol.

Actually, looking at their cap (http://www.capgeek.com/charts.php?Team=11)

With the cap at 56.8, Hossa is "only" about 1/11th of the cap at 5.2 mill, but when you add in Campbell's ridiculous 7.142, Huet's 5.625, and Sharp(this is a decent deal actually)'s 3.9, you are at about 22m/56.8 mill. That doesn't sound too bad, right? Except, Kane and Toews are both up for free agency next year... Kane makes 3.725 now and Toews makes 2.8 which gets them to 28.5/56.8, but Kane and Toews are both due for huge raises next year, as is #1 defenseman (don't fool yourself, Campbell) Duncan Keith who is making 1.475 (30/56.8) right now. If you _doubled_ all of their contracts they would still be taking huge hometown discounts and we'd end up at 36.5/56.8. Add in Dave Bolland's new contract, 5 years at 3.375, and you hit just under 40 mill. This doesn't sound too bad, but when you consider at that point the team is

Hossa-Kane-Toews
???-Bolland-Sharp
???-???-???
???-???-???

Campbell-Keith
???-???
???-???

Huet
???

so they have about 17 mill to fill in all those blanks. that's _12 slots_ without even looking at scratches to bring them up to a full roster - 1 mill a pop for everything but their top liners. Considering the people they still need to resign, like rookie of the year candidate Kris Versteeg and fellow RFA Cam Barker, Brent Seabrook, who is making 3.5m the next two years, and secondary scorers like Andrew Ladd (1.555m) and Dustin Byfuglien (3m for 2 years)... I just don't know how they're going to fit this shit under the cap without half their team belonging in the AH.

I doubt they're bringing in Hossa. DO you have a source?

Edit: found it. 12 year deal. 5.2 mil a yearish. Wow, he'll be playing for a long time.
