The Everything NHL Thread

Can't possibly suck more than the Nordiques winning the cup the year after they moved out and after they traded to get a goaltender that was hated by every single Nordiques fan.

I enjoyed the "perfect size for the Habs" comment way too much!

I doubt this happens, but I really hope it does. I am getting really sick of retired players making comebacks and being general non-factors, but most of why it bugs me is that they go from this memory we all have of dominant, elite players and become iffy fourth liners. I think in this case he stands to improve our last memories of him more than tarnish them, and by the sounds of it he deserves a comeback... hope he fits in somewhere.

Kind of big news, Bertuzzi signs with Detroit. Detroit is doing some weird ass signings, since most people believed that their young guns (i.e. Abdelkader/Helm) would be getting some NHL playing time.

It's really not that weird of a signing if you sit down and think about it. In fact, all 3 signings aren't that weird. All of them are 1 year deals, IIRC, for really an inexpensive amount of money. This means that they are all extremely low risk. If any, or all, of the players (Bertuzzi, Eaves, Williams) end up not working out, Detroit can very easily bench or get rid of them and then they're right back in the position that they were before: young guys needing to step up and fill some slots. I don't necessarily approve of the particular signings as a Wings fan, but they make sense from a depth perspective. This forces more competition from the younger guys in Grand Rapids and keeps them from becoming complacent since they won't just be handed a job in the big leagues.. they have to earn it. Plus, Detroit does have guys who can get injured and without these depth signings over the summer, where are they going to turn? Their AHL players would already be up and playing without these guys and nobody is in reserve.

That's the motivation I see behind this. Ken Holland wants his prospects to stay hungry and to have some experienced big bodies that can be used when needed. It's a shame that a player or two that probably deserves a slot won't get one, but the Wings are very much in the position to win a Cup this year (like every year) and why not have that extra depth? Bertuzzi especially could end up paying off big time considering he's put up like .66 pts/game the last couple seasons and if he does that again playing 3rd line type minutes it's a good deal. If he doesn't, or if he takes too many bad penalties, then someone more hungry for his spot will take it.

Anyway, 4 players left the team (Hossa, Kopecky, Samuelsson, Hudler) and 3 players were added. Helm or Leino will get a spot next year with the other fighting for rotation with one of the older grinders/4th liners. I feel like Abdelkader will be the odd man out, but you never know.

patrick kane's assault charge is an odd story...

anyways. As a an avid detroit fan (since I was 3), i'm dissapointed in this signing. Bertuzzi is not performing well nowadays. He was good for a few years in vancouver, that's it. He will be a liability I can guarantee it.

MONTREAL (AP)—The 2-month-old son of Washington Capitals goaltender Jose Theodore(notes) has died.
The goalie’s sister-in-law made the announcement Thursday during her show on a Montreal-area radio station. Veronique Cloutier, whose sister Stephanie is married to Theodore, did not give details.

“We are aware of the heartbreaking news,” Capitals general manager George McPhee said in a statement. “At this time we ask that everyone respects the privacy of Jose and his family.”
Theodore and Stephanie Cloutier also have a 3-year-old daughter, Romy.
Apparently his son died of respiratory complications. His daughter also suffered the same as a newborn baby, but recovered.

Looking forward to seeing Salo, Edler, Bieksa, Erhoff, and Schneider shooting rockets from Vancouver's blue line this year.

Looking forward to an occasional new 'french' connection line :

Tanguay - Lecavalier - St-Louis

Will definitely be rooting hard for TB this year.

I'm even more curious to see who's gonna get the shaft. THey're over the cap limit. But with these additions, and with Luongo in his prime, I'm putting money on them to at least get to the conference finals (oh and they need to score some goals too ^^)

Really excited about the West this year. Vancouver, Chicago(for at least one year), and Calgary should all be better with the roster moves they've made, and between those three and Detroit, Anaheim, and San Jose the top 6 should be awesome. Really excited for the 6 interdivisional games played between the teams mentioned above - Calgary/Vancouver, San Jose/Anaheim, and Chicago/Detroit 6 times will all be happy evening for me!

Additionally, fantasy hockey is up on yahoo - get to it Jackal !! I'm fine whenever as far as draft date, though I believe neither Aldaron or I can do it on Wednesdays.
