The Everything NHL Thread

jr7 is entitled to his opinions, no matter how misguided and off-base they are. Each sports thread has its own general antagonist (or more, I'd say there are at least 3 here depending on activity), and if you take them away the thread turns into a civil, contained, BORING discussion.

Disagree with him all you want, but he definitely spices this shit up.

But 12 games in the middle of the season is a much larger, more recent sample size than 18 playoff games that just happened, right? My bad. I should have been watching old tape from the New Year instead of referencing things like this Rangers series that just happened when I posted.

Even if you use the postseason sample aldaron supplied, their record is not impressive when Kovie has <2 points. Better than the regular season, but still not great.

I won't disagree that the Devils have over performed in the playoffs (based on expectations) but can you honestly say that the Kings haven't over performed right there with them? Neither team was expected to be here.

Obligatory "nobody listens to me". We all know how I feel about the Canucks, the Blues series I think everyone thought was winnable and I think we all expected them to beat PHX. Maybe the Kings offense is overperforming but as a team they are not overperforming as much as NJ is.

Then again, the Kings aren't really an 8 seed and the Devils aren't really a 6 seed caliber team, either.

Agreed. I like the Devils, I just don't want them to win.

The Kings did have the tougher road, and did it in fewer games (hmmm, maybe that's why LA is favored to win the cup, hmmmm) but were the types of opponents, by record and standing, really that different from what the Devils faced?

The answer to this is a pretty resounding 'yes'. The Devils faced Florida (lets be real, they were the worst playoff team), Philly (great matchup, terrible goaltender vs great goalie), then New York who had gone through 2 seven-game series. Compared to the Kings who blew out the top 3 seeds and it's pretty clear who is playing better against better competition.

the rangers are not a defense-first team? you suck at trolling. nobody gets riled up by what you say. we just feel bad for you.

Where did I ever say that? So let me get this right, you invent something I said and that spawns an entire page of empty posts trying to insult me? lol @ this thread. Insult the person bringing stats to a discussion thread, bring on the one-line sarcastic posts!

i don't know, i kind of wish more people would respond to him like carl did

That would be nice, since this is supposed to be a discussion thread about the NHL and not a contest to see who can make the dullest sarcastic one-liner

Where did I ever say that?

A defense-first team like the Kings should expose this over a 7-game series. If the Devils try to have a balanced attack, they will lose this series.

Wouldn't a defense-first team like the Rangers been able to expose them over a 7-game series?

You 100% implied that the Devils have not played against a defense-first team.

lol, you insulted me based on an implication that you invented out of my post. Do you not know what the word "should" means? They SHOULD be exposed. The Rangers weren't able to, the Kings SHOULD be able to.

That sounds perfectly reasonable. It could be better if you have some stats to back it up. For example, their regular season performance from this year, their roster, and the results of the recent games they may have played.

It's pretty obvious that you don't understand what the word "should" means. The Rangers should have been able to expose the top-heavy Devils, just like I expect the Kings to. I don't think there's anything wrong with that. Certainly not enough to warrant your inappropriate reaction.

You keep obsessing with the implication that you created in your own head from my post: because I named the Kings and not the Rangers, I must think the Rangers are not defensively-minded. I shouldn't have to explain why that is not a legitimate assumption to make about my post.

That game was giving me a heart attack. Props to both Quick and Brodeur for being beastmode.

It is clear to me that you didn't watch this game. The Devils completely missed an empty net on 3 occasions that I can remember. Clarkson fired it over the net when Quick was basically taking a nap on the ice. Later on Clarkson put a rebound about 80 feet wide when 80% of the net was open. Fayne also missed putting a rebound into an empty net. The game went to overtime. It isn't like the Devils got blown out. They are clearly capable of winning whether Kovalchuk scores or not.
