The Everything NHL Thread

congrats to Daniel and Henrik Sedin on joining the elite club of athletes who won gold in both Winter Olympics (Hockey, 2006) and Summer Olympics (Synchronized Diving, 2012)

A joke about the twins diving, how original and witty

anyway, what do you guys think about the Doan situation? I still think he's going to stay in with the Yotes but its been like 2 weeks since his "deadline" to decide. With each passing day it seems like more of a chance that he may go somewhere else. Where would he go? I'd think to somewhere where he can win, a cup contender, so that rules out the blackhawks.

Goodbye 2012-2013 season:

Edit: Also interesting story about Huet: http://www.lequipe.fr/Hockey-sur-glace/Actualites/Huet-en-contact-avec-la-et-vancouver/304286

Translation for those who don't speak french:
"I'm mired in indecision, he explains to L'Equipe on Tuesday [in an interview]. A few options are available to me, I'm going to have some important decisions to make."...The French goaltender is pondering whether to continue his career in Switzerland with Lausanne or to keep pursuing the American [NHL] route. "I've been in talks, I'm part of the mix for Vancouver and Los Angeles."

Double posting because of this amusing thing about diving:

http://prohockeytalk.nbcsports.com/...embarrass-divers-distribute-list-league-wide/

Following the commencement of the NHL’s Rule Enforcement Meetings, Senior Executive Vice President Colin Campbell highlighted one of the key developments from the two-day affair:

Players want to eliminate diving. Big time.

Here’s the skinny from Dan Rosen of NHL.com:

The players in the session, including Ottawa center Jason Spezza, Vancouver defenseman Kevin Bieksa and Toronto defenseman John-Michael Liles, led an impassioned discussion on enforcing the diving/embellishment rule (Rule 64.1), Campbell told NHL.com. He said the players want to distribute a list of divers around the League so it can be posted in all 30 dressing rooms and be delivered to the on-ice officials.

“They want to get [the list] out there,” Campbell said. “They want the player to be caught, whether it’s on the ice by the referee or by us on video. They are all tired of diving. The object is to make them stop eventually and, by doing that, they can get it out there around the League, embarrass them. The referees will know it, too, so the divers don’t get the benefit of the doubt.”

Well, it's not like Columbus has anything to look forward to (and it won't change until those clowns in management are fired). Still, I want to watch some hockey =[

Just curious to see who people would pick here...name your all time line up to throw on the ice for a regular shift. 2 wingers, 1 C, 2 D men, 1 Goalie. The people you pick will be assumed to be in their healthy primes.

I think I'd go:

C - Wayne Gretzky - Best playmaker ever with once in a lifetime awareness and hockey sense...with the ability to score whenever he wants when he can't feed someone.
W1 - Mike Bossy - One of the best goals per games averages ever, assuming healthy prime so arguably the best pure scoring winger ever.
W2 - Gordie Howe - Need toughness to protect Gretzky / Bossy, but don't like compensating for skill...Mr. Hockey provides grit and skill in ample amounts.
D1 - Bobby Orr - Best offensive defenseman of any time.
D2 - Nicklas Lidstrom - Graceful, aware, amazing pure skater, can shutdown opposing rushes if Bobby gets caught pinching.
G - Patrick Roy - Man this one was tough as a Devils homer...but if I have to go most skilled all time, I can't in good faith ignore Roy.

Notable names I didn't include are Mario Lemieux, Jaromir Jagr, Maurice Richard, Doug Harvey, Paul Coffey, Ray Bourque, Martin Brodeur, Terry Sawchuck, Jacques Plante, etc.

Who would you guys throw out there?

C - Mario Lemieux
W - Mike Bossy
W - Maurice Richard
D - Raymond Bourque
D - Denis Potvin
G - Patrick Roy

Stretching just a little bit with Potvin but I think this is a very legitimate (and all québécois) "all-time greatest" top 6.

Honorable mentions : Guy Lafleur, Jean Béliveau, Marcel Dionne, Martin Brodeur, Jacques Plante, Luc Robitaille, Gilbert Perreault

C - Mario Lemieux
LW - Alexander Ovechkin
RW - Mike Bossy
D - Denis Potvin
D - Niklas Lidstrom
G - Dominik Hasek

Honorable mentions: Wayne Gretzky, Teemu Selanne, Bobby Orr, Patrick Roy

Also for fun, the All-Made-of-Glass Team:

C - Sidney Crosby (honorable mentions: Eric Lindros, Pat Lafontaine)
LW - Paul Kariya
RW - Marian Gaborik
D - Bobby Orr
D - Chris Pronger
G - Rick DiPietro

Give me the French Connection up front with Phil Housley and Paul Coffey defending, the Dominator in net. Outscore the other team, and when they get the puck in my zone, Dom bails everyone out. Win all the games.

Also for fun, the All-Made-of-Glass Team:

C - Eric Lindros (honorable mention: Pat Lafontaine)
LW - Paul Kariya
RW - Marian Gaborik
D - Bobby Orr
D - Chris Pronger
G - Rick DiPietro

I know it was hard to find defencemen but I wouldnt really call Orr and Pronger glass players. Also Bure and Neely would be better choices instead of Gaborik

Dead Puck Era team:

C- Peter Forsberg
LW- Paul Kariya
RW- Jaromir Jagr
D- Chris Pronger
D- Nick Lidstrom
G- Dominik Hasek

I don't know enough about history to make a list like this but I will say that I personally would take Lemieux over Gretzky. While Gretzky was amazing I think he benefited a little more from his era than Mario. While goals were still coming in bunches during Lemieux's prime he faced more athletic competition imo.

And Chill, as a Caps fan I'm interested in hearing your reasoning for taking Ovechkin.

And I can't stand behind a dead puck era team without Brodeur. You can argue that Hasek is better but the NJD WERE the trap.

Yeah I chose Hasek because I think he was better than Brodeur during that era. All 5 players I chose were the best at their position during the DPE. I understand what you're getting at though.

Big Landeskog

gr33n's fantasy team is so gay with ovie / crosby / weber / landeskog lmao

fkin dutch

Also it's kinda sad how someone's all time team could also be very close to the glass cannon / injured alot team...Bobby Orr (knees), Mike Bossy (back), Mario Lemieux (heart and cancer i believe?), Pat Lafontaine (concussions)...very sad actually...
