but if we're doing aesthetics

yeah that's a Snivy plush back left, deal with it

this was taken not long after I got back into the swing of things after a 7 month lay off courtesy of tennis elbow. It's gonna serve as my 'before' pic for my winter fitness kick, probably starting in late September. As some of you know I've just relocated into the English mountains and I'm
not in a position to train fully quite yet (settling into new job, nearest gym is 20 miles away and nearest shop is 5 miles away, limited funds for the first month blahblahblah).

personally, I wouldn't look up to somebody like zyzz. I'm not a "bodybuilder" myself, and even if his death was not caused by steroids, the simple fact that he used steroids to get the body one would wish to have, I don't find inspiration in that. It would be like somebody buying a black belt in a martial art instead of training those 8 years for the black belt, what's the inspiration in that. R.I.P though, I had seen his pictures around the internet I just didn't know his name.

Honestly I think the big draw zyzz had was that he went from being a forever-alone WoW addict to an aesthetic dude who lived a life without doing things he wanted. The steroids are bad, but he still made impressive physique changes nevertheless.

you know Lee the first time i saw that picture and read that it was your "before" picture, the first thought that came to mind was something along the lines of:

"Man, he calls that a before picture? oh how a lot of people would love just to be able to call that an after picture."

wanna, like, trade? lee

Your current after pictures will serve as before pictures some day, Jesus. Circle of life and all that.

The curse of this game is that, no matter how far you come, you'll never be truly satisfied; you'll always want that bit more.

It's a blessing and a curse! Man I'm making some good progress on my bulk, I've put on about 8 kilos since I started and I'm still not fat - I guess going to the gym a minimum of 3 times a week for over a month keeps you in good shape haha. Now to try and step it up to 4/5 times each and every week and enter Lee Beast Mode.

Most of my workouts are cardio-based so I'd say, if anything, I'll be clean bulking. As I said, the nearest gym is 20 miles away and it's looking as though the most cost-effective/attractive transport option is cycling there so woooooo 200 miles of cycling per week on top of all the mountain climbing and running I've been doing.

I'm a diminuitive 5 foot 7 and weigh 165lbs.

thanks Venom, appreciated.

And iunno styval, I suppose I could stand to lose another % or 2 but aren't there health risks associated with having too low a %? While I imagine i'd probably look 'better' with a lower body fat I suspect that I'd be sacrificing some overall health and it comes down to that 'aesthetics vs functionality' discussion from earlier. Most notably for me, I live in a fairly cold climate so 'insulation' AND fat stores help to cushion the feet and other key often over-stressed areas so that's handy for my running and stuff. Apparently low body fat is related to a weakened immune system too but I haven't had so much as a cold in over a year so I dgaf ^_^

Anyway, quick google search on the matter

article said:
Before winding up this article, I really want to drive the point home: lower body fat is not better.* Not from a performance standpoint and not from a health standpoint.** Although it’s probably as related to energy balance as body fat per se, the point is that when folks get beyond a certain point of leanness, hormone levels are disrupted in both men and women (and a great deal of this is controlled by leptin, discussed in detail in other articles on the site).
The normal menstrual cycle in women may stop (this is called ammennorrhea), indicating a problem with estrogen production. This tends to cause bone loss which is a very serious problem.
In men not using drugs to maintain their hormone levels, testosterone can approach near-castrate levels as they reach the lower limits of body fat. Complaints of zero sex drive (and not being able to get it up even if the drive were there) are common among natural bodybuilders who get extremely lean.
And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Thyroid, growth hormone, IGF-1, metabolic rate, and the immune system are all severely depressed under situations of extremely low body fat (genetic oddities excepted). Cortisol goes through the roof at extremely low body fat levels especially when a lot of training is being done.
This is all just part of a coordinated set of adaptations that occur with both starvation and dieting (dieting is just starvation on a smaller/slower scale) to try to keep you alive.* It’s frustrating but actually makes perfect sense, at least to your body.
A body fat of 5% in a man is likely occurring because there is no food. Your body can’t tell the difference between you starving it because you’re a crazy bodybuilder or you starving because there’s no food available ; it reacts the same way.
If there is no food, the last thing your body wants is for you to get your mate pregnant. Either there isn’t enough food to keep it alive or you’ll be dead before it’s born, and unable to fulfill your fatherly duties (watching TV, drinking beer, changing the oil and killing the occasional spider). So testosterone crashes to make it impossible in the first place. If you’re starving, chances are so is your mate so that’s a double whammy.
A woman dieting to 12% or lower body fat wouldn’t be able to bring a baby to term safely in the first place, so the body prevents it by shutting down the menstrual cycle. I should note that the reasons for the shutdown are actually more complex and some dieting women will lose their period at higher body fat percentages. It’s actually more an issue of energy balance than body fat per se but that’s beyond the scope of this article.
Some women look upon the loss of their period as a benefit, just one less monthly messy (sorry) hassle. But the bone loss and estrogen issue is not a joke, and can (will) cause problems down the road. Studies of female gymnasts and ballerinas are finding low bone densities similar to post-menopausal women. Certainly not the picture of a healthy athlete. And if the bone doesn’t develop during puberty, it may never develop at all.
For those truly obsessed with body image, body fat percentages of ~8 for men and 14-15% for women should be safely sustainable year round although it will require nearly fanatical devotion to daily diet and training (or having picked the right parents to start with). As long as the person is at least eating at maintenance, hormones shouldn’t be too mucked up.
The same probably holds for athletes (most claims of insanely low body fat levels like 2-3% in athletes being gross over estimations).* Without drugs, most athletes won’t perform well trying to compete at 5% body fat.* They certainly won’t train effectively at that level, if for no other reason than the caloric restriction needed to get to that low of a body fat level will hurt training performance and adaptations.
As I noted above, bodybuilders usually don’t have a choice, they have to be walking anatomy charts when they step on stage.* But with few exceptions, they don’t maintain that body fat level for any extended periods in the first place.

you never want to be under 7% body fat as a guy, ever. 9% is perfectly healthy for you Lee, with 7-13% considered the best for men. Don't lose any more =P

Hey guys I don't go to the gym yet or play any sports but I can start going to the gym. I would like to get more muscular for the ladies. How can I get muscular fast?

@ XxpokemonmasterXx

I hope it doesn't sound like I'm advertising lol but Check my post out earlier in this thread

It should help with getting into the basics of working out.

PS: You will not get "ripped" fast. One mistake beginners make is expecting results immediately, then get disappointed and stop working out after like 2 weeks with no results. You WILL need patience, but I assure you if you keep strong habits for diet and exercise you should get the body you want eventually.

PPS: Don't try and get muscular to look "good" for the ladies. You should do it to try and improve yourself and be the best human being you can.

I think Lee said it best:

Train to get stronger, faster, fitter, healthier and more physically able and enjoy any aesthetic benefits that come your way as a result. For the love of god, don't allow your workouts to be driven by vanity.

idk i just think you have enough muscle
tyson gay is 5'11 and your weight .___.

to each his own though i guess

edit: xxpokemonxx do 20 pushups every commercial on tv then 10 situps every other commercial

eat lots

Agreeing with AK and Ree, don't ever let your motivation for working out be to "impress the ladies". 1) they don't really care, 2) "bro beach body" workouts tend to leave out entire sets of muscles, which severely throws your body out of balance, and 3) trying to impress women with your physique will only attract shallow, ignorant women who will end up breaking your heart anyway.

The best way to "impress the ladies" is to be kind, honest, humble and chivalrous. Trust me, character is way more important than any physical attribute.

tl;dr if you use vanity as your motivation, your efforts will be in vain and you will always be disappointed.

Instead, if you're motivated by a desire to be stronger, faster and more durable, you will always be making progress and you will be happier in general, with drastic increases in your attitude and energy. Real health translates to so many advantages in other areas of your life I can't even list them all here, so let's just say you'll be much more satisfied working out for personal fulfillment, not for the praise of others.

WaterBomb, I'm assuming AK = Avatar Korra and Ree = Lee? Anyways, I looked at AK's work out post and (no disrespect intended) I'm no sure how valid it is. Some of the things she wrote in it are against what I've been taught (not eating too much, or else you get overweight, also don't rely too much on gym and instead focus on pushups, sit ups, pull ups, etc) Again no disrespect intended however can a guy check that post and tell me if it's accurate? A girl might have different idea of working out and I want to make sure I'm not following some woman's work out guide. Also, that philosophy isn't really true. I could care less about how my body looks, however no girl thinks that so I have to change myself. Sports and physical activity aren't my favorite thing and if i could have it my way I'd never work out.

^^^ lol

I'm no workout guru but I'm pretty sure you need to take in a lot of calories and protein when you work out to increase your metabolism which would burn fat faster (???). Also, you don't NEED the gym. There are lots of workouts that require nothing more than a bar to pull up on.

Lots of fat guys have girlfriends.

It's true, you really don't need the gym unless you really want it. I swim a heck of a lot because of doing water polo and swim team for my school, and I'm in the best shape of my life. Sure, I do lft some weights every now and then, but just swimming is a great workout that works your whole body.

Also, having a "curls for the girls" mentality isn't a great reason for working out anyway, like it was said before. You don't need to look like a movie star to attract women.
