The road to anywhere that wasn't the middle of nowhere turned out to be a longer trip than expected. The fields of flowers extended on what seemed like forever, with many flowery beasts making their home here. None of them gave the pair any trouble, though Zephyr noticed his grassy companion whispering what seemed like sweet nothings into the ears of certain sentient fruit. Looks like one of them was having more fun here.
After a few hours of walking, the endless flowers revealed an overgrown road of its own. It was obviously claimed by nature a good while ago, but not enough to hide the fact this path was man-made. With these deductions in tow, Zephyr eagerly took this road, now deep in the cover of moonlight. And sure enough, the road gave out relatively quickly to a more standardized road, and what appeared to be what Pokémon Trainers called a "route".
Shortly after, due to there being few people actually on the route, Zephyr found a town. "Civilization!" Zephyr exclaimed mentally. Of course, since he deemed it rude to barge into a town in the cover at night, he pulled out one of his specialty pillows that could withstand his fancy helmet, and immediately collapsed on it. His leafy partner dove into an open arm, which was initially met with a few grumbles, but quickly dissipated as Zephyr realized this was actually more comfortable this way.
As Zephyr came to, he was met with the sight of what appeared to be, and was quickly confirmed as, a local town guard. "What were you doing sleeping there?," he barked. "Don't you know there's
far better places to be doing that?" "It was late, and I didn't want to wake up anyone." "Tch... pretty convenient excuse." The guard was obviously losing patience over this, with incessant finger tapping with crossed arms. "For someone this suspicious, I'll need to see your proof as a trainer... show me your Trainer ID." Zephyr saw no problem in complying with this request. "Hm... this seems pretty legit. I'll let you in, particularly since you have a Pokémon partner." The guard seemed a bit irked still as he glanced over at his shockingly ornate watch with visible gears, but noticeably calmer than before. "But I don't have time to deal with any miscreants messing this place up, got it?" "Yeah, I understand," responded Zephyr, noticeably annoyed himself by this exchange.
The sign immediately above the entrance read "Juste Town", and Zephyr needed no more time to dawdle than to embrace the aesthetics of the signs; he had more important things to do. He whirled through small crowds of people and their Pokémon partners; fighters walking alongside angry pig monkeys, yet more fighters with four-armed humanoid brutes carrying around weights, among other various sights. He knew them all by heart; Primeape, Machamp, Mienfoo... there was even a solitary Blastoise with a vested lady among the residents here.
After a bit, Zephyr found an old man... what he presumed to be the village elder. "I presume you're the leader of the town, correct?" "You presume correctly.". he responded. "What would you need from me?" While the elder looked remarkably fit for his age, his eyes carried an aura of wisdom in them. Zephyr could tell he was remarkably experienced. "I'd like to know where the battlegrounds of this town.... ahhh..."
Zephyr trailed off as his eyes caught onto an old style battle ring, which was simply a square stone slab with seating to one side, and a bell off to the other side of the ring. "Seems like you found what you're looking for, then." The elder seemed bemused by this development. "Yeah... though I'd still like to know a bit of history about Juste Town, while I'm here." The elder cleared his throat, and then began to speak. "Juste Town was founded centuries ago by our strong-willed ancestors, who left us a prime place to train and battle with our dear Pokémon partners. We always believed in helping each other out in times of need relying on our own strengths to solve problems, which is why you see little in the way of machinery here. That ring in particular is an example of this, where fights are conducted on common stone, with the bell to announce when a battle takes place... a tradition held for many years." There was a pause to catch his breath for a moment before continuing. "The Wandering Master is one of the main highlights of this town. He's a lone Sawk that doesn't seem to have a Trainer commanding him at all, but is exceptionally civilized nonetheless. He takes challengers on in a one-on-one fight in the ring in honorable combat. He has not lost once. It's definitely made us all stronger than we would be..." He, too trailed off as he saw the aforementioned Master a short distance away.
"Oh, it looks like he paid this town a visit again! And... is that your Tsareena there talking with him?" Zephyr also took a glance, and was briefly stunned before responding. "Y..yes, that sure is... actually, it seems like they want to fight." Sure enough, the Tsareena and the Wandering Master both stepped onto the stone ring of their own volition, as if it was the only place to fight. Very shortly after, the fight was afoot, in some ways literally, as a flowery kick was the opening move. This received a swift counter blow from the Sawk, which hurt, but neither hit was strong enough for either combatant to falter. Zephyr simply watched on to the side of the ring as the action unfolded.
Tsareena then called upon the sun to heal itself, which Sawk didn't seem to be prepared for... perhaps it was used to one blow being enough to take down its attacker? Regardless, both sides were patient. Another kick was launched, and another blow in return. This cycle continued for a while, before the Wandering Master realized that this was not in his favor, and unleashed a flurry of chops. By this point, it was too late; the flowers had impeded the move's power, and a light slide was enough to knock the master down.
The crowd erupted in a combination of shock and raucous cheering as this happened. The Sawk exited the arena after a bit of conversing with the Tsareena, and held out his hand to Zephyr. "The Wandering Master seems to accept you as a trainer," the elder said. "Wow, me?" Zephyr was taken aback by this development. "You seem to be very strong, travelling with such a capable partner. This is the first loss I ever saw from him." The elder's expression remained calm, but his voice gave away a tinge of excitement. Zephyr took the Master's hand, and thus began another friendship.
Around a half-hour later, Zephyr mustered up the spirit to make his own announcement as an outsider. "Alright, this town could use a high-caliber battle that'll get everyone all pumped up even more. This site has been decided for a battle in a large tournament testing the mettle of trainers. So with this... let me call out a worthy foe." And before anyone could react further, Zephyr rung the bell, knowing this would be a signal. His own device flashed the name "Ronman" on the screen. "Never heard of him," Zephyr thought.
Regardless, he knew every battle here would be good, and making it past the first round meant there was some hot battle awaiting him. Soon enough, a male figure, also obviously foreign to Juste Town, came running down the southern entrance. "Ah, you must be my opponent this round. I hope you're ready for a heated battle!" Zephyr was all fired up already. The person on the other end, which he now knew as Ronman, nodded in approval. And with that, the bell was sounded and the Pokémon concealed for the match were revealed.
The first match started off with a painter dog versus a mole. Zephyr was worried with the presence of a sapping move this Drilbur was going to be a problem, but his own Smeargle's speed, alongside the other moves being used, led to Zephyr winning the opening matchup. As the game went on, Zephyr noticed some familiar faces sifting into the crowd. A pine cone exploding on a mudfish, a small elephant landing heavy blows against a monkey and an old dragon, who stomped it flat.... the match was proceeding at a blistering pace, and it ended with a Poliwhirl buzzing out the rest of the battle-fit fighters that Ronman had. Zephyr was up a game, and feeling good about himself.
The next match would not prove so easy, as Zephyr saw he had a battle-incapable bull of his own, which he sent out to face the fearsome papercut he saw facing him. One threat passed to another, and a creature of pure magma, Heatran, slammed down a powerful torrent... exactly what Zephyr wanted to see, besides there being a Heatran in the first place. He sent out some spikes, and then kited the Heatran for a while to resist its draining move combo. This ended as he sent out a Blacepheon, who's head exploded violently to take the Heatran with it.
This would not go unpunished, as a Spinarak managed to replicate this effect to take down Zephyr's mushroom fighter. A mistake of his own, but one he could recover from. The spider fell from the Blacepheon coming in and using its secondary attack to be repeated ineffectually. The mind exploded one more time, and down went a spaghetti monster Tangela. The battle was winding down to its conclusion, as Bisharp cursed Zephyr's Onix out of an effective move, leaving him in a sticky situation. So he decided to use the Elekid he used before to set down some deadly spikes, even if most of the opposition was immune to it. With an overgrowth of plants, Elekid fell, and the Onix cleaned up the metal menace, leaving the score an even 2-2. And indeed, the spikes ended up securing a win, as Zephyr and Ronman danced around with the remaining four as the poison took hold of the Linoone, leaving the papercut Kartana vulnerable to Onix, ending the series.
With high spirits and cheers all around, the two left their own separate ways, with Ronman heading the way he came, and Zephyr hanging around the town to challenge a few interested people in the crowd, all the while learning what his new partners can do in battle..
