The Musical Talent of Smogon

Hopefully you don't let your parents narrow-minded view of what a black person should be hinder you from doing something you love

As much as I love listening to music and can't live without it (I get miserable if I'm sitting in the car for more than 15 minutes without music playing), I really haven't tried out that many instruments.

I started playing violin when I was 5 (I'm 20 now), and I studied under private teachers consistently until last semester. I decided to quit taking violin lessons this semester because I already have enough work on my plate as far as classes go. I did the Suzuki method and got up to book 5 until I moved in 6th grade... and ended up with a really hard-ass teacher who didn't believe in Suzuki. And then after I got to college, I started taking music lessons with the music department and played in the symphony. I consider my playing skills well above average, but I think I have a really, uh... emotional(?) relationship with violin where I don't play well unless I feel inspired or motivated. And I haven't really touched my violin since I got home from college this past summer, so I probably suck pretty badly right now.

I did play around with a cello during the summer, though. I didn't take lessons or anything, but it was similar enough to a violin where I figured out how to play really basic stuff. Definitely would have to seek a teacher about my posture, though, because despite watching millions of youtube videos on playing cello, I don't think I've quite nailed it yet.

I guess I'm also somewhat interested in learning guitar since I like the way it sounds and I've been told that it's relatively easy to teach yourself. Oh, and I guess I sing pretty well... but I'm way too shy to sing in front of most people. D:

my current school orchestra director won some battle of the bands at some point but one of his bandmates was black so she didn't let him go on tour (he had been hiding it from her until then). since they couldn't go without him, the runner up went. we now know that runner up as aerosmith.

parents and their racist vies can suck sometimes =/

sad to see im the only drummer in the house :(

we need to start a smogon band ive been saying that forever

I can record some backbeats and shit im pretty good :)

Another bassist here, been playing for about 3 years now but I've learned music my whole. I probably not as good in general as someone should be after playing this long, probably because I'm an idiot and never practice enough but anyway I'm not too bad either.

Other instruments I am proficient on include clarinet, which I played for about 5 years and also double bass which I began this year.

I really want to learn how to play basic guitar and piano. I understand the theory of chords and stuff, I guess I just have to take the time out to teach myself a few things.

Actually I have an audition on Friday for the school Stage Band so wish me luck =]

Is that story real? That's crazy, and that sucks.

I've played electric guitar for a bit over two years. I'm a wannabe shredder/metalhead and stuff, with a healthy appreciation of jazz.

Saxes REPRESENT

I played alto sax for about six years, and I wasn't anything amazing, but I was still pretty good. I'm currently in my senior year of high school, and played in the marching/concert band. We had instrumentation problems last year, so I switched over to tenor sax to make up for it.

There was a time when people were starting up a jazz band, and I joined it, but it turned out that the teacher (who is ultra biased against saxophones so he might be the reason why I can't get much better currently) thought that small combos were stupid and put on a crap big band thing with French Horns instead of Saxophones, so that didn't really work out. Other people I know are trying to start a jazz combo, and I've expressed interest, but they haven't really taken me up so eh.

Our band has had problems for some time, and we got a new band director, who has combated these problems; unfortunately he also created new problems, many of which he doesn't even seem to realize are problems. So we still have issues and they don't seem to be getting any better. I'm just glad I'm going to graduate before he infects the whole band with his bullshit.

Regardless, I love playing the sax. I'm not that great at technical passages, but I've worked hard to learn scales and chords, and am working to become an improvisation master.

I play guitar and sing and a lot of people say I'm pretty great at it and I have considered doing it as a career, but my parents really don't like me doing they say its not normal for a Black kid to want to be a Rock / Metal / Hardcore / Blues Musician. =/
introduce them to Living Colour dude

I'm a percussionist but I've played several different instruments in various community bands throughout my years including trombone, french horn, trumpet and tuba. I also took piano lessons for four years (six through ninth grade) before eventually stopping, though I really regret it now.

Anyways like I said I'm a percussionist and I play in my school band, as well as my school jazz band, community band and two bands with my classmates. I've been playing for nine years now, and I have applied to SUNY Potsdam and SUNY Fredonia for music business, I audition on March 7th and March 28th respectivly. I would like to attend a private school but unfortunatly I really can't afford it :/

My favorite instrument to play is the drumset, no matter what style of music. Currently I own a trans purple Mapex M Birch, with 8", 10", 12", 14" and 16" toms (8, 10 and 12 up, 14 and 16 down), 22x18 Bass Drum and a 3x13 Pearl Brass Piccolo Snare. I own a set of 14' Zildjian A Mastersound Hi-Hats, and a 16'/18' set of A Custom crashes along with a 20' A Custom Ride, a 17' A Crash and and 16' Oriental China Trash. I play on a set of Pearl Eliminator 2002-C's and I love my set up.

I'm quite the good singer. I am a baritone, but I can get into a tenor range if I need to. I don't sing in choir, but I do sing in a school solo singing group. My favorite genre to sing is easily rock.

(all classical training)
Piano lessons 12 years.
Flute lessons 5 years.
Voice lessons 4 years. <-I'm best at this

I've gotten quite good at freestyling too...once I win my loopstation from ebay I'll upload some stuff (you can hold me to that).

I've played piano for 10 years and flute for 4 years (school band).

I was pretty good at piano but never took school band seriously.

Classical/Flamenco guitar for about three years. I took lessons for a while, then stopped because of schoolwork. Flamenco music is so damn sexy though. Maybe after AP tests I will be able to take lessons again.

I also picked up the bass for a band about a year ago. The right hand techniques for classical and flamenco made the bass seem pretty natural for me to play, as well as knowledge of scales and intervals for making up basslines. Playing in a band is very fun though, even if you guys really aren't serious. It's fun just to hang out, make up some grooves, cover some songs that you like.

I have played guitar for a while as a kid, but I wasn't really any good because my motor skills suck; e.g. my fingering and scales are the suck. I can play a bit if I practice really hard, but I will never really become any good at it. I do adore good musicians though and I wish I had a musical skill I could take advantage of. I occasionally strum a bit on my guitar but I've lost the ability to read sheet music and stuff so I really don't do much with my musical skills anymore.

I do love listening to it a lot though and I review a lot, to the point where I sometimes have stuff sent to me by a label and all that.

I've been playing Trombone for just about 7 years now. Last year I was in the Missouri Honor's Concert Band, first chair. Here's a video of us, I'm on the far right, the one closest to the edge of the stage.

It's not a great showing of my own talent, but if you listen to music at all, you should be able to pick out the Trombone line pretty easily.

I started out on Violin in the 4th grade like so many others. It was kind of cool but I never figured out how to do virato and shit so after my senior year of High School I haven't touched one.

I started playing guitar a bit, but chords always gave me trouble. A friend of mine needed a bass player for a band they were forming, and I was pretty good at moving up and down the fretboard, so I volunteered to try out. It's been a learning experience for me but it's pretty rad. I really like playing a lot, and coming up with bass lines for shit is challenging.

I've actually played a wide variety of instruments over the years. I started with piano at about age 5, even doing a small concert piece at 13 in secondary school, in front of the entire year. I took up the cornet and played that for a few years too. I've also tried my hand at the harmonica, and nowadays I am working on my singing voice. While I enjoy both making music and listening to it, I wont be exploring it as a career, even though I would probably enjoy it.

I've taken piano for 7 years but am probably going to quit after the school year ends because my teacher makes me play a lot of classical music and I don't particularly like it. I've also taken guitar for 1/2 year and am all right. I'm learning a lot of Beatles stuff.

I played trombone for 5 years, piano for another 4, guitar for the past 18 (don't let that fool you - I'm mostly self taught and only now am reasonably competant), and have sang in choirs, barbershop quartets, musicals (a lead role nonetheless) and folk groups for the past 13-14 years.

The only thing I really do anymore is play guitar (I like to play a lot of Dave Matthews), and sing on occasion.
