Theorymon Discussion and Viability Ranking

I think Serene Grace could be able to make Rotom-F at least viable in OU, Discharge and Air Slash coupled with Serene Grace sounds like something that could be very very annoying a set like:

Rotom-F
Trait: Serene grace
Item: Leftovers
EVs: IDK propably a lot HP, some SpA and Spe similar to Rotom-W
-Substitute
-Discharge
-Air Slash
-Pain Split/Volt Switch/HP Ice

wouldn't be bad its main Problem atm is that it barely has anything going for it outside of Air Slash which is a pretty mediocre move, but with Serene Grace it could pull of Paraflinching just using its stabs and with a solid defensive typing that allows it to set-up a substitute rather easy.
I am pretty sure it wouldn't be OU, but it would certainly rise to RU or UU and have some viability in OU as one of the most annoying things ever.

The particular set that occurred to me would be a paraflinch set like togekiss (Discharge+air slash) running bulky evss. for the other two moves, I was thinking substitute and some filler move. I would agree that this may not make OU - togekiss is uu with a similar set
edit: yes, like Burningman said, I saw his post after I posted this.

I think that Rotom-S with Serene Grace would be a great Pokemon in UU and below but not in OU, where Jirachi outclasses it. Better typing, better bulk, reliable recovery, SR, and the same annoying combo with either Thunder + Iron Head or Body Slam + Iron Head.

Well I hope this isn't too gimmicky but I thought it might be neat in theory.

What if Claydol got Imprison?

Imprison, a move introduced in Generation 3, is a Psychic-type move that is learned by many Psychic types like Bronzong and Uxie, as well as a few powerful special attackers such as Landorus-I and Chandelure. It has the effect of preventing all opponents (it's a moved used on yourself, not the enemy) from using moves your Pokemon knows. Unfortunately, this move doesn't see much use in the competitive scene, outside of Smeargle's Impison -> Transform shenanigans in 1v1 and Imprison + Protect in Doubles to prevent a very common move.

I don't think it would be too farfetched for Claydol to learn this move, as he is a Psychic type and already learns a denying move in Heal Block. In terms of competitive use, Claydol would be able to block enemy Pokemon from spinning away his rocks, as well as preventing them from getting rocks up while he is in play. It takes a turn to set up, but Claydol's 60 / 105 / 120 defenses often give him to use supporting moves anyway.

I believe a set utilizing Imprison would look something like this:

344.png

Claydol @ Leftovers
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 Spd
Bold Nature / Impish Nature
- Ice Beam / Earthquake
- Stealth Rock
- Rapid Spin
- Imprison

The on-site set for Claydol recommends to be fully invested in special defense, but maybe physical defense would work well in the OU tier. He resists both Fighting and Rock, and the spread would make Pursuit less scary (though banded TTar still has 69% chance to KO if you switch). The 8 EVs in speed would allow him to creep on uninvested base 75s (other Claydol?), and he's already faster than the 36% of Skarmory who run 182 speed, denying them from using Stealth Rock if they happen to have it over Spikes. Of course, Imprison would also prevent the opponent from using the super-effective Ice Beam to take you out.

As for the spinners in the tier, Forretress and Donphan cannot touch Claydol. When running the physically defensive spread, Ice Shard from Donphan does 15 - 18% and Forretress, who couldn't Volt Switch out for extra damage, only does 13 - 16% with Gyro Ball. Starmie and Tentacruel would pose more of a problem, as LO Surf has a chance to OHKO Claydol, where as Tentacruel gets a guarenteed 3HKO outside of rain. Claydol can chunk Tentacruel back with Earthquake, but becomes setup bait for our favorite winged and levitating Dragons.

So would you end up giving Claydol a try if it had Imprison? What problems would it still face, and does it still lose the team slot competition versus Donphan? I've only used Claydol in OU on a TR team, but I think this set could be interesting.

What if Yanmega was Bug / Dragon rather than Bug / Flying?

It seems strange that a dragonfly isn't a dragon. Just look at Yanemga's design too, it has the draconian flare! Flavor reasons aside, I think when given a Dragon typing, Yanmega will probably be one of the most powerful Pokemon in OU. Every Dragon-type needs Dragon like moves, so lets give it Dragon Pulse, Draco Meteor, and Dragon Dance for the lulz. So Yanmega has two very workable abilities, one is Speed Boost the other is Tinted Lens. I could see Speed boost Dragon Yanmega working as a fantastic mid-game sweeper with some Spikes support. The other nice thing with Yanmega's new typing is the resistances! It resists Water-, Electric-, Fighting-, Bug-, Grass-, and Ground-type moves! Yanmega's new Dragon typing is pretty amazing, not only does it give it a great STAB to work with, but the resistances allow it to switch into a good chunk of attacks.

Check out what Speed Boost Yanmega can do:

252+ SpA Life Orb Yanmega Bug Buzz vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Jirachi: 195-230 (57.18 - 67.44%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252+ SpA Life Orb Yanmega Dragon Pulse vs. 56 HP / 0 SpD Kyurem-B: 424-502 (104.69 - 123.95%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252+ SpA Life Orb Yanmega Bug Buzz vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Latias: 307-367 (84.34 - 100.82%) -- 81.25% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock

252+ SpA Life Orb Yanmega Giga Drain vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Terrakion: 234-278 (72.44 - 86.06%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252+ SpA Life Orb Yanmega Giga Drain vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Keldeo: 237-281 (73.14 - 86.72%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Put it this way, if your team is just slightly weakened, you will be swept.

Now lets look at Yanemga's next ability, Tinted Lens. In contrast to Speed Boost Yanemga, this one will function as a brutal wall breaker with Choice Specs. Choice Specs + Dragon STAB + Tinted Lens is the epitome of Dragon spam. Move over Hydreigon, there's a new wallbreaking Dragon in town.

Look at this:

252+ SpA Choice Specs Tinted Lens Yanmega Draco Meteor vs. 252 HP / 236+ SpD Jirachi: 255-300 (63.11 - 74.25%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

-2 252+ SpA Choice Specs Tinted Lens Yanmega Draco Meteor vs. 252 HP / 236+ SpD Jirachi: 127-151 (31.43 - 37.37%) -- guaranteed 4HKO

So after a single layer of Spikes and even with minimal damage rolls each turn, SpD Jirachi is cleanly 2HKOd by a Dragon move!

Some more just for fun:

252+ SpA Choice Specs Tinted Lens Yanmega Draco Meteor vs. 224 HP / 252+ SpD Skarmory: 313-370 (95.71 - 113.14%) -- 75% chance to OHKO

252+ SpA Choice Specs Tinted Lens Yanmega Draco Meteor vs. 245 HP / 252+ SpD Heatran: 240-283 (62.5 - 73.69%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252+ SpA Choice Specs Tinted Lens Yanmega Draco Meteor vs. 252 HP / 168 SpD Ferrothorn: 265-313 (75.28 - 88.92%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

It has some issues though. Speed Boost Yanmega has slight difficulty breaking past bulky steels without resorting to Hidden Power, then there's the Stealth Rock weakness, and the horribly low Special Defense which means that Ice Beam will do a huge chunk to it. Specs is pretty slow, has a Stealth Rock weakness, and is hard walled by Chansey/Blissey. It's not a perfect Pokemon by any means, but if given a Dragon typing, it's easy ou imo. What do you guys think of Dragon-type Yanmega?

I think this is quite similar to the Tinted Lens Flygon that was discussed about. I do think it is potentially more dangerous, albeit being squishier.

Draco Meteor off of Yanmega is much stronger than Outrage off of Flygon, since it's coming off stronger base numbers as well as avoiding being locked. It'll definitely be a very powerful wallbreaker with a Specs, maybe even better than Latios since it can break through Steels.

What if Celebi was mono Grass type instead of Psychic/Grass and/or got Levitate instead of its current ability?

Would it effect its weaknesses and/or resistances to the rest of the metagame? Because it has a deadly weakness to Bug-attacks, and when you take its Psychic-typing, you still have useful resistances to Ground and Water, while losing weaknesses to Dark and Ghost as well.

Levitate also lets it switch into Ground attacks that might really harm you teammates. Will either one of these be "useful"?

I think this would make Celebi worse tbh. Being able to switch into Keldeo an Breloom are probably the biggest reasons to use Celebi. The Bug / Dark weakness really isn't that big of a deal, since Celebi can Baton Pass out of Tyranitar / Scizor's way. Resisting Fighting type attacks easily makes up for the Dark / Bug weakness. Levitate would be pretty useless on Celebi too, since it already resists Ground type attacks, and Natural Cure allows it to easily tank Scald's without the fear of being burned.

What if Charizard was Dragon/Fire instead of Flying/Fire
Has this been discussed already? If Charizard got a Dragon typing, it will get unresisted (except for Heatran) STAB coverage, including Draco Meteor, plus being able to mix-sweep with Swords Dance and Outrage/Dragon Claw.

252+ SpA Choice Specs Solar Power (Dragon Charizard) Draco Meteor vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Latias in sun:596-704 (163.73 - 193.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252+ SpA Choice Specs Solar Power (Dragon Charizard) Dragon Pulse vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Latias in sun: 386-456 (106.04 - 125.27%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252+ SpA Choice Specs Solar Power (Dragon Charizard) Draco Meteor vs. 248 HP / 252+ SpD Heatran in sun: 172-203 (44.67 - 52.72%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

252+ SpA Choice Specs Solar Power (custom) Draco Meteor vs. 252 HP / 236+ SpD Jirachi in sun: 182-214 (45.04 - 52.97%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

252+ SpA Choice Specs Solar Power (custom) Draco Meteor vs. 252 HP / 252 SpD Cresselia in sun: 328-387 (73.87 - 87.16%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Dragon STAB grants stronger blows on Pokemon like this, which are normally special and physical tanks to Dragon-types.

I think you're missing a bit of the point. Jirachi and Cresselia already crumple against Solar Power Charizard.

252+ SpA Choice Specs Solar Power Charizard Fire Blast vs. 252 HP / 236+ SpD Jirachi in sun: 932-1100 (230.69 - 272.27%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ SpA Choice Specs Solar Power Charizard Fire Blast vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Cresselia in sun: 385-454 (86.71 - 102.25%) -- 18.75% chance to OHKO

I mean, I didn't even really need to list that Jirachi calc, it's not walling any Fire-type moves (besides maybe HP Fire in the rain but whatever). What Dragon-typing does is give it a way around Latias and a few bulky Waters. Solar Power Focus Blast smokes Heatran (114.8 - 135.58%), but Specs Draco really helps out against stuff like Politoed. Sun support would still be mandatory, base 109 Special Attack is almost a joke, but that's a spicy meatball if it's in sun.

Not only would it give him a great secondary STAB to work with(Despite the above average at best special attack), but it would cut his SR weakness from 50% to 25%. I don't know if that would make him OU, but I can definitely see specs and scarf sets being used more often in sun teams as long spin support is provided. Solar Power boosted Draco Meteor AND Fire Blast(Plus sun) would cause a lot of pain, even in a scarf set.

What if the three Kanto birds could get their respective weather abilities? The 'dex data on Articuno and Zapdos all but screams that they should, and Moltres would be dragged along with the other two despite a direct reasoning for it to receive drought.

Articuno would still be bad IMO, Hail is not a very good weather as the benefits it gives are pretty small, and Articuno is a 4x weak mon who sports a pretty bad defensive type, so using him only to get rid of the weather is not a very good idea, specially when Abomasnow at least has grass STAB to nail Toed and Tar while Articuno just crumbles to Stone Edges and takes a lot of damage from Hydro Pumps on rain (Ninetales murder him too but he also murders Abomasnow).

Moltres is somewhat bad too, sure he is much more powerful than Ninetales but he is also 4x SR weak (which is somewhat remediated as Sun teams are normally good at keeping SR off the field) and the main reason he is used nowadays in OU which is Hurricane becomes totally unusable on Sun, all in all he can get some usage as his Fire Blasts will put the hurt on lots of stuff and Ninetales is a pretty crappy pokemon, but ironically while Drought is possible the best ability in the game alongside Drizzle it is not THAT good on Moltres.

Zapdos would be possible broken, he is the best of all the birds nowadays and would summon the best weather in OU, he also is grass resistant and electric neutral which means he has good defensive sinergy with water mons, his main drawbacks would be SR weakness, Tyranitar who murders him unless he runs an offensive set with HP fighting (in which case he just dies to Hippo) and the nerf on his Heat Wave which hurts alot his coverage, but between reliable recover, great offensive presence and decent defensive typing Drizzle Zapdos alongside Politoed would be too much for OU and one of them would end up banned (probably Zapdos).

I haven't run enough successful hail teams to comment on Snow Warning Articuno.

Moltres would have a cool niche as an explosive nuker, 2HKOing a metric shitton of resists with Specs or Life Orb. Tyranitar could switch in, but has look out for HP Fighting and U-turn. Hippowdon is looking at 2HKOs from Fire Blast and/or Hurricane. Speaking of Hurricane, Politoed can switch in on Fire Blast, but Moltres is still packing the most powerful Hurricane in OU so it could be run alongside Fire Blast, HP Ground/Fighting, and U-turn.

Zapdos would possibly be broken. If it received Hurricane, it would absolutely be broken, especially an Agility set. Flying/Electric coverage is bullshit, only Jolteon, Thundurus-T, and Magnezone resist it in OU, and only Magnezone can take more than two hits from Zapdos (unless Zapdos is carrying HP Ground). It's not that Politoed and Zapdos would be ran side-by-side like Hippowdon and Tyranitar are, it's that Zapdos and instant 100% accurate Thunders would be really fucking awful to face.

What if Magnezone and Heatran got Levitate?
If you think about it, it would make them great as Pokemon eliminating their crippling Ground Weakness. And it also fits flavourwise; as Magnezone floats naturally and Heatran crawls up ceilings. Sorry if this was talked about already.

Eh, I like the idea of Magnezone getting Levitate, but for Heatran to get Levitate would be a joke flavour wise. It's a big Lava Monster...thing, and weighs a ton.

Anyway, competitively speaking, I don't think Magnezone would be as good as it is already. I mean sure, Levitate allows it to check Garchomp and Landorus-T nicely, but it's main niche is to trap Steel types like Skarmory and Scizor. It's still weak to common attacks like Fighting and Fire, and I just don't think it has the bulk to abuse Levitate enough for it to not be outclassed by Magnet Pull.

Heatran I think loves Flash Fire. Being the only Steel type to resist Fire type attacks is pretty huge. I guess Levitate is nice on Heatran, but I just don't think it makes any sense flavour wise, so I dunno why we're discussing it.

What if Regigigas got a better ability such as Iron Fist or Guts?

Well that may make it a little broken because of its amazing bulk, typing, attack, speed and its good physical movepool. Choice Band sets with Return/Frustration and maybe Dizzy Punch boosted off of Iron Fist along with some good coverage moves like Stone Edge and Earthquake would have no resisted Pokemon. But it also depends what ability you are talking about too; Facade off of a Guts Regigigas with a Flame Orb is a little terrifying.

I can see it hovering metagross/golurk style by shooting lava/heat/etc.

What if Politoed got Water Spout
It would become WAAAY more powerful with a Choice Scarf/Choice Specs set; outclassing its Hydro Pump choice sets unless you go below a certain HP mark.

Hurricane actually allows Moltres NOT to become bait when Politoed is in play:
252+ SpA Life Orb Moltres Hurricane vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Politoed: 273-321 (84.78 - 99.68%) -- 81.25% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock

Think droughtmoltres would be better than ninetales. Sure it has x4 sr weakness, but it has more bulk, power, a ground immunity and ROOST
Also, while im here
What if Flygon got adaptability?
+Atk Flygon would hit with 436atk for ground and dragon moves, only 3atk less than neutral kyuremb
Naughty 252atk+spd
Cband
Outrage
Eq
Firepunch/blast
Uturn
Can gain momentum & has sr resistance.
Hell even special set could work with
Dracometeor, Epower, Fireblast & Uturn. Like a latios for sun teams

Well Draco Meteor Adaptability Flygon would be a bit scary, but it wouldn't do good in the long run since if it stays long enough before using U-Turn its pretty useless due to the lower in SpAtk, but thats where it comes in handy as a mixed wallbreaker:
Flygon@ Life Orb; Ability Adaptability
200 Atk 252 Speed 56 SpAtk, Naive
Outrage/EQuake
Draco Meteor
Fire Punch
U-Turn
This set makes it better at staying in longer than the Specially biased Mixed set above; it allows it to annihilate a Pokemon with DM and then after it has a -2 SpAtk it wont be as useless since it has other tools to handle Pokemon with; especially with Adaptability it can create massive damage, even more with a Life Orb

56 SpA Life Orb Adaptability Flygon Draco Meteor vs. 248 HP / 252 SpD Cofagrigus: 177-211 (55.48 - 66.14%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

56 SpA Life Orb Adaptability Flygon Draco Meteor vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Palkia: 400-473 (104.16 - 123.17%) -- guaranteed OHKO
