Things you do to fall asleep

So I haven't really thought about this much my whole life. Usually I fall asleep pretty quick. However, it's been taking me a while to fall asleep lately. I know some people take a hot shower before they sleep, count sheep, envision themselves in a hammock, etc. What are some ways you fall asleep?

Reading helps me fall asleep. If I'm not naturally tired, then I would usually just start reading. Or go on the computer or play video games.

Simple stuff, open the window and take a good breath of clean air, get a glass of water, make sure you don't have to go to the bathroom before you go to bed. Make sure it isn't too hot or too cold, that there isn't a funny smell in your bedroom, etc. etc.

Do breathing exercises if you really can't fall asleep. That doesn't have to be yoga or stuff like that, purely breathing exercises. For example the following:

Inhale through your nose, exhale through your mouth. Breath like that slowly while you are lying in bed. This will usually suffice but if you want to you can flex a group of muscles, like, say, your left leg, and inhale while you do that, and then exhale when you stop flexing them, and you can repeat that for your entire body.

To be honest, I do this exercise very rarely as I'm usually tired enough to fall asleep, but if I really can't fall asleep I use this and I assure you it works.

Masturbate? No really, that'll knock you out.
No. Only if you really feel like it and you keep thinking about it, it's better to just do it, but don't if you just can't fall asleep but you don't feel the urge to do it. It'll have the opposite effect.

If you can't fall asleep, you must get out of the bedroom quickly and have a drink or something. It's amazing how much just getting out of your room can help. It's linked with the fact that if you do anything other than sleep in your bed then your mind doesn't readily associate your bed with sleeping and so you won't fall asleep as easily, akin to how you even if you tried to wet yourself, you probably couldn't. Just getting out of your bed for a minute or two helps immensely. And also, don't do stuff like homework or play games on your bed often.

drink heavily and if you're not prescribed sleeping pills then take a couple of antihistamines (only a couple as in overdose antihistamines have a paradoxical effect).. you can skip the drinking heavily, if you so choose.

i watch tv shows until i fall asleep. if you dont sleep near a tv then close your eyes, think about effective pokemon teams that you'd like to make and watch yourself fall asleep faster then you ever have.

I tend to have more trouble falling asleep during the summer, and I think it's simply because I don't use as much energy during the day. If you feel like your mind is still too alert to fall asleep, then try doing more thought-involved things during the day. On the other hand, if you feel like your body's not tired enough, then try moving around more.

Otherwise, really soft or slow classical music usually works for me if all else fails.

I always listen to music very softly. It has to be soft, if it's too loud it will dominate the room and I'll pay too much attention to it.

I've read many times that being on a computer/playing games will not help you fall asleep; those require concentration and stimulation of your brain, which in essence only helps to keep you awake.

Oh, I don't mean to run 3 miles or do crossword puzzles right before you sleep. I meant to do those sort of things throughout the day so you're tired enough when you actually do go to sleep.

I used to have huge problems falling asleep. The most convenient time for me to exercise was between 1am and 3am so I would be going to sleep directly after a heavy training session. Because my body was stimulated and still full of adrenaline and so forth, I'd be tossing and turning for hours no matter how tired I may have been. So I guess what I'm saying is make sure to have an hour or so of relative inactivity to wind yourself down prior to going to sleep. It'll help to relax you and prepare your body for sleep.

And yeah...masturbating works too. (Y)

I find reading to be the best way. Sometimes it takes a while, but I enjoy reading so much I could care less how long it takes. If I read too long, though, it'll actually take me longer to fall asleep, so once you start dozing off, be sure to stop or you'll have more trouble than before you began.

And it'll be really hard to fall asleep if you've been lethargic all day, so in cases like that, it's best to just stay awake until you naturally fall asleep. Forcing yourself to sleep after a day of doing nothing is really, really tough.

I usually fall asleep fairly easy with no trouble at all. When I found sleeping difficult at times, then I'd simply get out of bed (after attempting to sleep for an hour or so) and take myself downstairs, where I'd make myself a nice cup of tea or warm milk. Alternatively, I would simply go to the bathroom and... you know the rest.

Of course there are other methods in helping you success in a good night's sleep, as mentioned, masterbating (aw yeah) or music. Something to occupy you long enough to take your mind off your frustration in your inabilty to sleep should do the trick.

One time I was trying to think of all the pronouns in their nominative and objective cases.
I believe my habitual thinking before bed is what makes it so hard to go to sleep in the first place.

Masterbation, in all seriousness. It WORKS. After its over, I feel so content and relaxed. If you don't want a mess or your not in the mood, try thinking hard about something you enjoy.

Maybe its my analytical brain but I like concentrating on things like the aformentioned pokemon teams or sometimes i walk through a fight scene in my head (kinda weird, but I am a martial artist and it can get pretty technical). Sometimes just think about what you are going to do tomorrow; make plans. Unless what you are doing tomorrow is what's keeping you up. :D

I've found it hard to fall asleep recently and hot showers before I go to bed keeps me awake longer. I normally like to play on my DS 'till I'm sleepy.
