Annie: Don't Stop

another artist i acquired during my huge meal at the breakfast place.

i found her through the Royksopp connection (i guess she's done some vocal spots like Karin), and the term "Norwegian Electro-pop" sounded really tasty to me.

and boy oh boy is it ever. kind of like a Britney Spears that can sing, and actually has a whole album full of really catchy synth/beat driven pop songs.

you still get the sort of "narcissism" found on a Spears album, but not nearly to the same level of self-absorption, and it has a far more tongue-in-cheek tone.

in general, this is some really catchy and fun shit, and makes me happy. <3

so far i only have her 2009 album Don't Stop, but look forward to getting her other shit too.

wtf stairway to heaven is sooo overrated don't listen to that song! it is boring as crap!

if you're going back in time then how about this song guys

blue oyster cult - burning for you

Don't go saying that a song sucks or is overrated just because you don't like it Stairway to Heaven is one of the best songs IMO. In my Opinion not in yours. On a side note has anyone seen Dave Grohl perform Stairway to Heaven? Funny as hell

I believe that stairway is kind of overrated seeing as how it's pretty much reached worship status with certain groups. With that said, though, it is still an amazing song, and if a song deserves to be overrated, it's probably that one.

frank zappa has a better comedy cover i think

So what if it is overrated? It is my favorite Zeppelin song, and I have listened to every Zeppelin song with serious attention. (Stairway to Heaven, Achilles Last Stand, and In My Time of Dying are the three songs I love <3)

If you want to bitch about overrated songs, then it was pretty stupid to link one. Burning for You is one of Blue Öyster Cult's most poppy, least worthwhile songs. Flaming Telepaths, Astronomy, Seven Screaming Diz-Busters, et cetera are all not only better listens, but actually creative songs, and only Astronomy has any real notoriety comparable to Burning for You of the three I listed.

Jimbo, I personally dislike Zappa's Stairway to Heaven, despite liking Zappa generally, but a lot of people find something great about it from my limited anecdotal interaction! Not that I have heard or want to hear Grohl's and compare them.

Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath

Heavy, doom sound to influence many to come, dark melodic riff, only among some of the things that make this song a classic. Ozzy saying, "Oh no, no, please God help me" still sounds amazing and sends goosebumps to this day. Ozzy's voice is probably the deepest here than any other song, he attempts to go for low note that he can't reach at times. Despite how awful I believe Ozzy is as a singer and in my opinion his voice sounds the worst on this album, it fits very well with the music. A faster riff is what finishes off this song which showcases Iommi's sololing, this reveals to the world the gifted guitar player Tony Iommi is.

Botch - Hutton's Great Heat Engine

Oh jesus christ this is absolutely lovely, lovely, lovelylovelylovely.

Quite the drastic departure from my beloved Minus the Bear but this is just so good, it makes me want to punch things in the face. <3

@Ezekiel: Don't tell people what they should listen to, it's all opinion, and as much as you'd love to change it, you can't.

Megadeth - Set the World Afire

The vast majority of musicians of heavy metal would be forever grateful to come up with just one of the parts to this song. Dave Mustaine really dishes out a thrash metal attack here, he unleashes two to three different parts that could alone carry a song on it's own. The different sections of the songs never stop to rest. Many thrash metal songs with as many changes as this song usually fail to impress, this is not the case with "Set the World Afire". All the parts of this song blend together so well which makes this song never boring to listen to. 10/10

Well I wouldn't really expect you to like Grohl's and Zappa's covers, since they seem to be poking fun at the song for comedic effect rather than playing it for musical effect, and this is something that I expect from a lot of Zappa songs (though not all obviously as he is a pretty fantastic musician).

So What! album
man I have really started to get into this album lately. It doesn't have the maniacal riffing of RIP but the songs all seem to be faster and grittier or something. Maybe it's something about the fanfare in the first song that put the rest of it in contrast, I dunno

Dan le Sac vs Scroobius Pip - Thou Shalt Always Kill

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yoN6XfyQsr4&feature=related

These guys are an absolutely brilliant hip-hop/ spoken word duo that really deserve more exposure than they get. I can't describe this song other than saying it's basically a "shut the fuck up" to all those self-righteous pricks who try and tell you which band is "better" than the rest and put their opinion over yours. There's also a lot of nice British pop culture references too and satirising British teenage culture. If you have the time, check out the song Tommy C on YouTube, which is a tribute to the late great comedian Tommy Cooper.

Definitely worth a listen if you're into any sort of hip-hop, electro pop sort of music. (:

Marry Ann - Regina Spektor.

Basically just some string Bass and Regina singing, she has an amazing voice and it's basically the best instrument in her repertoire. If you've listened to her at all, and you're like ME, then you know that the best thing about her singing (aside from her voice) are her lyrics, she is a fantastic lyricist. I just love how she sounds.

Oh, so now Ozzy suddenly helps the band rather than luckily plodding along while being carried by the other members.

Queens of the Stone Age - God is in the radio

this song is just so good to listen to. a bit slow at first but it builds up and it just keeps on getting better after each second that passes by.
Q.O.T.S.A is just an extremely good band and it would be a shame if you didn't check them out

YES! This is probably one of my favourite bands currently. Personally I prefer A Song For the Dead. It's just generally very cool; the intro borders on silly but I quite like it and when the drums come in its awesome. The solo is really awesome as well. It's similar to God is in the Radio in that it seems to end at one point but then doesn't.

My other favourite band at the moment is Dream Theatre, in particular The Dance of Eternity. The bass in the intro is very cool but it only gets better from there. The keyboardist is very prominent throughout (Rudess is amazing) and the solo at 2:31 is a very nice touch, also the parts where he plays along with the guitarist are very effective. The bass starting at about 3:07 is also very cool, and watching some live videos it looks pretty insane. The song can be a bit wierd though, having over 100 time signature changes within the one song.

Yeah I quite like her voice it's very unique.

HORSE the Band - Lord Gold Throneroom
Eclectic is the best word to describe this - the sex sounds at the start phasing into a jolly little synth riff as the bass kicks in. At this point, the mismatched vocals come into play, and the mood shifts from electro-pop to metal and back in the space of moments. Easily their best song.

Pontiak - Aestival

blistering, hazy, brooding, atmospheric Southern rock with some surf guitar. it's woozy and bleary-eyed. and I love it. the album this is off of, Maker, was one of my favorite albums of last year and I've never heard anyone talk about it.

Say Goodnight - Bullet For My Valentine

I really like this song and it's probably the only soft song that I like. The guitar is so simple yet sounds so great. The solo is nice and soft which seems appropriate with the song and i really reccomend you check this song out

Deep Purple - Speed King

This is the opening track from my favorite Deep Purple album In Rock. From the first sounds of Ritchie Blackmore's shredding opening solo, you can already tell this is gonna' be a great song. All the instruments are playing along to the awesome solo, which kinda reminds me of the intro to Metallica's "Hit the Lights". After the solo there is some keyboard playing which sounds church sound like, this is misleading because after that the song breaks out into a full hard rock song. Ian Gillian does some great singing here while Ritchie Blackmore lays out the cool riff. Another nice highlight is Roger Glover's basslines. Overall this is one of Deep Purple's best songs. 10/10

Made Out of Babies - Grimace

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-g0EEWROOs4

wow.. truly one of the greatest records of that year.. I had listened to Battle of Mice before, but didnt know it was the same singer before listening to this.. Julie Christmas is one of the best (female) vocalists of all time probably and in this album, she really shines.. Grimace is one of my favourite songs from their 2008 album "The Ruiner"

Rainbow - Gates of Babylon

A truly amazing song and perhaps the best song by Rainbow. This song has an awesome orchestra and the best guitar solo ever by Ritchie Blackmore. Ronnie James Dio as usual has soaring vocals that fit the song well. This is one song you need to hear for yourself to hear how epic it really is.

Goldheart Assembly - Last Decade
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5M8jJ6aRJy0

New group, new album. I love this song, it's a little boring but then like, an hour after I listen to it, its stuck in my head. I really like these guys, and I bet they'll be pretty big in a few years if they keep this up. I'm bad at describing music, but I'd say this is kinda similar to Athlete, Coldplay, and Travis, but not so similar that I'd mistake them for any of them.

The best solo/lead work by Ritchie Blackmore is in Child in Time, and the second best guitar work by him is in Speed King! We mostly agree I assume (judging by your remarks about Speed King), but I like to argue ^_^

posting to agree with this, scroobius pip is an absolute legend. i am not so keen on his latest song but the whole Angles album is a classic. my favourite is probably waiting for the beat to kick in, a deeply philosophical but entirely informal story (its very simple but there is a hell of a lot to be read into it)
