This Is Not A Now Playing Thread

Muse - Hoodoo

A nice electric guitar intro, followed by some quiet singing. Calm and slow...until the piano takes over and the song picks up in intensity (Bellamy screaming " Come to be! How did it come to be?"). A slow finish to an under-appreciated song about troubled relationships.

Botch - Afghamistam

This song is so infectious and fucking spooky, I love how throughout the entire song I have the feeling I am absolutely doomed.

Animus Vox by The Glitch Mob

My friend recently introduced me to Glitchop, which is kind of like dubstep but with more computery/glitchy (hence the name) sounds. It's also faster and so far i've been really loving it. I originally thought it was kind of like The XX + Linkin Park with very dubstep roots but I'm no music critic so hey. The whole album is called Drink the Sea and it's on what.cd, demonoid etc if you like.

R∀W - Rotten Graffty

Got a bunch of Japanese tunes today. This is so awesome, it's like... hardcore/rap/pop-punk and at some times power metal, ridiculous.

@~NJ: Ooh, thanks man, that's good stuff.

Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath

The rain, thunder, and tolling of bells sets a mood, and then the guitar crashes in like a flash flood from the thunderstorm. This song should not be respected because it was one of the earliest songs that could be identified with what would come to be the doom metal genre, but because it is one of the best. The crashing guitar, plodding cymbals, thick sound, and Ozzy's vocals (punctuated by the despairing wail at the end of each verse, "no, no please god help me") create a truly scary piece of music. However, every ounce of plodding is paid back by the final minute, where Iommi plays one of his most furious guitar solos ever. If you close your eyes and let your mind wander it's easy to envision the demons coming.

Leif Erikson - Interpol.

Another great song by a great band, and I would highly recommend some of their other songs as well. In Leif Erikson, Interpol once again proves its ability to perfectly capture a unique male perspective on love. This is enhanced by very smooth vocals and a nice beat.

Black Sabbath - The Shining

Those who are fans of Black Sabbath may only have listened to the Ozzy Osbourne songs, to a lesser extent the ones with Ronnie James Dio. If you didn't like the style that the Black Sabbath songs with Ronnie James Dio had, chances are you won't like this song. "The Shining" is the opening track from Black Sabbath's first studio album with Tony Martin on lead vocals, The Eternal Idol. It was the first (and I believe only) single from that album. This song has a nice catchy hook to it, it got played on all the Black Sabbath tours with Tony Martin on it. If there would be any reason to check this song out it would be for Tony Iommi, although the style differs from the Ozzy years it doesn't change the fact that Tony is still an awesome guitarist. If you want to hear some singing then check the song out alone for Tony Martin.

bah, Black Sabbath without Geezer is much more of a crime in my eyes than Black Sabbath without Ozzy (or Dio). On the other hand...

Iommi - Dopamine

Not Black Sabbath, and doesn't try to be. It's fueled by a monstrous riff, and while it doesn't deserve a place next to Black Sabbath, it's still fun to listen to.

BONUS Iommi - I Go Insane

It starts out really slow and boring, laced with synthesizers and bullshit, but once you get past about the four minute mark, the tempo jumps up several marks, and Tony turns the distortion on and proceeds to melt faces with a nice array of riffs. It does slow down again near the end, but instead of singing, Iommi plays a lovely guitar solo. Unfortunately, they manage to ruin the ending by doing the chorus a couple more times, but this song is definitely worth listening to for the brilliant middle section.

Daisuke Ishiwatari - The Midnight Carnival

While Holy Orders is probably his best-known work, with a remix by S.S.H. proving popular among the StepMania community, this is the music that plays when you face the final boss of Guilty Gear X2: I-no. Make no mistake, that guitar-wielding witch will kick your ass to hell and back accompanied by this music if you don't know exactly what you're doing. It doesn't help that one of her victory animations involves her whipping her shirt off, either.

Crests of Waves - Coldplay

Oh my God, where do I even start? Chris Martin's falsetto is just beautiful, and Jonny Buckland's guitar playing is entrancing. I can leave this song on replay for the longest time without ever getting tired of it. It's one of Coldplay's lesser-known songs, being a B-Side, but it's great. Worth listening to!

I noticed a lack of epic in this thread

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zbcn5ze9n7g

OK, so I will listen to almost any decent rock song there is, but this has got to be one of my favorite songs of all time. Stairway to heaven was metioned earlier, but this is one of the most awesome songs led zeppelin has done. Awesome vocals that flow into each other, and shreddin guitar and drums that mix together so that the tempo is set early in the song and play it through to the end without a dull moment.
This was the sole reason my Dad bu the original album when he was 12 (yesterday was my dads 51st birthday, this was before itunes and singles) although black dog was pretty cool too.

I see know reason to not do a 2 in 1 post, less pc++ that way

The Damn Yankees are a very underated band (and i generally don't like 80s music), this is a slow song I actually really enjoy, even though I usually like high energy. The guitar and drums provide a smooth backbone for the amazing lyrics and vocals this song is about, might not be for everyone, but a good tune and a rockin band!

Looked through the thread - Amazed by the lack of good music like the who, neil young, ac/dc, jimi hendrix, zz top, etc.

Soundgarden - Let Me Down

Figuring as Superunknown is my all time favorite album, I thought I'd like to introduce some people into some Soundgarden. The song kicks off with driven drums and low bending guitar playing. This is rather grungy to start off with. The vocals are spot on with the excellence by Chris Cornell. The chorus tones down the grunge feel a bit, as it goes into a more rockier side. After the chorus you will wear Chris shout "Drown me in you", which gives the song an urge of power so to say. The bridge is rather smooth, then however it breaks to a solo from Kim Thayil. "Let Me Drown", really kicks off the album well. 10/10

If you enjoyed this song, I recommend you get the Superunknown album. You will not be disappointed.

I've noticed a severe lack of Scorpions in this thread. Seriously six pages and not even a mention? I'm here to help with that. Anyway I just saw them on Monday and they still kick ass even after all these years. Definitely the best live performance by any band I have attended and that says a lot.

We'll Burn the Sky

One of my favourite Scorpions songs. Taken by Force is one of Scorpions best albums and this song is a great example of 70's Scorps.

Coast to Coast

Their best instrumental song and one of the best instrumentals anyone has written imo. The main riff is amazing at its simplicity. It might not be as complicated as other riffs they've written, but it just flows so good. You won't know what I'm talking if you haven't listened to it, but if you haven't you're really missing out on a great song.

Rock You Like a Hurricane

Well I guess everyone expected this. One of the best and most known hard rock songs, with great rhythm. Need I say more? I higly recommend this song to anyone who hasn't loistened to it(though i doubt there are such people).

Nice, great opener. I thought I'd share this one now that we have some Soundgarden on here. Also from Superunknown is Head Down. It starts of with some eastern tinge guitar, then goes into a really spacey and grungy drone. I also love the lead slide guitar throughout the whole song, especially at 2:21 where it sounds like he starts playing those blues chords. It's a good contrast to everything else going on. There's some really interesting percussion near the end. Chris Cornell resorts primarily to falsetto which is pretty unusual for him. The lyrics are also really interesting. Good for listening to on a dreary day. I sort of rediscovered Soundgarden when I got into high school (this album came out when I was in first grade, and I remembered the video to Black Hole Sun from way back). I went through my angst stage in 11th grade and Head Down was just one of those soothing songs to cool my nerves too.

Also, I cannot believe I have not mentioned a few of the coolest bands ever. The first is Failure, one of the most underappreciated bands of all time. They had one single in 1996 and broke up soon after, with 3 albums under their belt. Their lead singer/guitarist, Ken Andrews has been in many projects and is a very successful producer, so kudos to him! This is the second to last track on their final album, Fantastic Planet.

Failure - Heliotropic
This song starts with a very deep fuzz bass riff that's repeated throughout the song. The vocals and guitar build upon this and the song pretty much explodes at 2:22 at the chorus. This song actually reminds me a lot of the Soundgarden track I posted previously, Head Down.

Next I will cover what is, not surprisingly, my favorite band, 311.

311 - Mindspin
This is the second to last track from Soundsystem, my favorite album of their's. It starts out with uncharacteristically heavy guitar riffs from Tim Mahoney, who I have read is actually playing a 7 string on the song. Vocalists Doug "SA" Martinez and Nick Hexum exchange raps in typical 311 fashion. The chorus is an awesome vocal harmony, then it returns to the heavy verse. Then out of nowhere, the song completely changes key and the overall sound turns very trippy and atmoshpheric. Drummer Chad Sexton throws in some really cool drum fills, and bassist P-nut supplies some thick bass to augment Mahoney's rich distorted chords. The end of the song fades with Nick Hexum's "oooh's." Lyrically, this song is great and really goes with the flow of this song. The heavy part and the chorus are really upbeat and fun while Hexum and SA describe the fun and the overall journey of being an immensely popular band. When the song becomes softer, the lyrics change direction and seem to point to the negative, or overrated aspects of success. Nick sings "People want to be me..." not to boast, but to express his amazement of coming so far.

Mark Knopfler - Border Reiver
So Mark Knopfler's back with his new album Get Lucky and this is the best song on the slbum imo. There isn't anything really technically superb, but it's just the right mix of everything, combining sort of scottish folk into Mark's typical sound and still-awesome guitar play. Just a great song to chill out and enjoy music.

Mercyful Fate - Evil

Everything about this song is perfect, the riff rhythm is so catchy that it grabs you by the throat, especially when the vocals kick in. That first verse has got to be one of the best in metal, as well as the chorus. "I'd love to see you cry, I'd love to see you die" awesome stuff. 10/10

Eminem feat. Lil Wayne - No Love

This song from Eminem's leaked album Recovery features a lengthy opening verse by Lil Wayne. Lil Wayne deviates from his usual lyrics depicting a lifestyle full of money, hoes, bitches, and getting paid; instead, his lyrics focus on the theme of the song. He paints a picture of a cuckolded, betrayed man with a heart broken to pieces. The song samples Haddaway's "What Is Love?" which gives the song a retro feel by utilizing a few of the lyrics of the original song, namely "don't hurt me" and "no more." Eminem's part is similar to Lil Wayne's in lyrical content. Eminem's flow in this song is broken up, irregular, and depicts the mind of someone who has just been abandoned and decieved. 9.5/10
