Umbreon's impressive bulk and typing allows it to effectively spread status with Yawn and be a physical wall. Foul Play gives Umbreon an offensive presence, without needing to rely on its subpar offenses. Yawn lets Umbreon force foes out and allows it to stall out the foe's Dynamax turns if they choose to Dynamax on Umbreon. Wish is Umbreon's most reliable way of restoring its health and the health of its teammates. Protect is used for scouting potential moves, and for healing reliably with Wish if the recovery is needed immediately. Protect is also very useful for stalling Dynamax turns.
Leftovers grants Umbreon extra healing every turn. It also has great synergy with Protect. Inner Focus prevents Umbreon from flinching from moves such as Gyarados's Waterfall or Excadrill's Iron Head, which could otherwise ruin its momentum. A Bold Nature with maximum investment in HP and Defense makes Umbreon a lot better at tanking physical hits, which it will commonly be up against.
Umbreon is often too weak to pressure teams offensively to the extent that other Yawn users like Snorlax, Hippowdon, and Sylveon can, so it is more commonly used on defensive teams. However, it is still very flexible in terms of teammates. Stealth Rock users like Ferrothorn and Excadrill make great partners for Umbreon, as Yawn often forces switches. While Yawn is a great tool for forcing switches and giving setup opportunities to teammates, common Lum Berry users such as Togekiss can comfortably switch into Umbreon and set up on it. Additionally, Pokemon like Sylveon and Mimikyu can halt Yawn by Dynamaxing and setting up Misty Terrain to block status. As such, partners like Assault Vest Rotom-H help check Togekiss and prevent it from sweeping, while Steel-types such as Excadrill and Corviknight are checks to Misty Terrain setters like Sylveon and Mimikyu. Umbreon tends to pair well with Pokemon that benefit from the setup opportunities that Yawn gives, so Pokemon like Togekiss, Dragapult, and Gyarados all appreciate Umbreon's support. Dragapult in particular stands out as a teammate for Umbreon with its ability to hit through Substitute users like Hydreigon that Umbreon fails to pressure with Yawn.
