Unpopular opinions

HG/SS was also the only Pokémon game so far with a proper menu and also managed to use the bottom screen properly.

One unpopular opinion of mine is that the in-game portion of the games tends to be ruined by 'mons that are completely broken (not counting legendaries) - Kanto has the Nidorans and Abra, Johto has Geodude and Gyarados, Hoenn has Mudkip (Ralts if you chose a different starter), Sinnoh has Starly, Unova has Drilbur and Kalos has Honedge. All of these trivialize about 95% of the main game, with the few segments where they aren't op being manageable with your starter (regardless of which one you pick).
First off, the I have to laugh due to the large number of these I have used in those regions (especially Hoenn as I used Gardevoir and Swampert in both Ruby and Alpha Sapphire and they were great members of my team).
Second, at least you have to catch most of them or have alternate choices if you want some more difficulty. It isn't as bad as "here's a free Mega Lucario, go wreck the rest of the game".

What made the welfare Lucario ridiculous was that you didn't even have to mega half the time and you'd still whip everything. (And I didn't, because I max Amie-trained everything and was paranoid about losing those bonuses.)

New Unpopular Opinion: ...I liked the Lucario. That's because I like Korrina as a character, and I'd never gotten to use a Lucario in a playthrough before, and it actually fit quite snugly into my team when I used it. Still, I found using it genuinely enjoyable.

I have a feeling something wasn't rendered properly on their side... I've seen it happen - if the text is saved as ASCII, the accent mark e disappears.
Ah, that makes sense. FRLG really helps it: Skull Bash gets the Def boost, Bite is Dark-type in a region lacking a lot of anti-Psychic coverage, and you still get Blizzard for Ice coverage, allowing you to skip Game Corner grinding (if you don't mind the accuracy and PP issues). Plus, it has a decent physical movepool and relatively balanced stats to go mixed. This is basically math confirming what experienced players may have already known.

The only reason I didn't pick Squirtle is because I wanted to use the Sliph Co. Lapras.

I agree and I actually like power-up punch! I also liked the power training thingie on the bottom of the screen. It helped my pokemon!

Excuse me? Even if you ONLY used Charmander, it is at a disadvantage in 43 (roughly) of ALL the Gym/Elite Four Pokemon match ups with only around 17 advantages. (see the Nerdist's Because Science video on the subject.)
Well, it's still enough powerful to manage the Elite 4 ...

Well, according to Smogon's own in-game tiers, Squirtle is the best starter in Gen 1.

Really? While Squirtle has always been my favorite (Blastoise is so cool), I found picking Bulbasaur to be better. Mostly since it has a great advantage in the beginning (Super Effective first two gyms, resists third), it has a great support movepool, and by the time it starts having problems, there are so many useful Pokémon to help it. Also, in Generation I, it has Razor Leaf, which had an effective base power of 165* thanks to it always landing critical hits (thank you, Gen I crit mechanics!).
Though, now that I'm thinking about it, I am looking at it from a Generation III perspective as I've played LeafGreen more than I have Generation I.
I need to reset my copy of Yellow.

*55 times 2 (critical) times 1.5 (STAB) = 165

Uh, what tier list are you looking at? All three starters were ranked at the same level in this one, unless there's been an update (it's pretty old).

Edit: wait, you said Gen 1 not, FireRed/LeafGreen. My bad. Although it's only Red/Blue/Green Squirtle that made top tier, Yellow Squirtle is indeed in the same tier as Charmander and Bulbasaur. Except Bulbasaur Yellow, he's a tier down. Man, I just keep screwing this post up.

I love the Premier Ball. I try to capture cool looking Pokemon like Zangoose and Skarmory on it (no matter how annoying it is to get Skarmory in that dang ball in Ruby)

Fame Checker is also a nice Easter egg learning how Gym Leaders and even the Elite Four came to be who they were. Even if it's not the most useful thing, I love the lore and prefer it over the small PokeNav text in RSE. I like how its a scavenger hunt- talk to the right people or read the right book and you get a new entry. At least if XY had something like this, then the Gym Leaders/Elite Four could be fleshed out even more- just two TV show snippets of the characters aren't enough.

In regards to the HGSS walking Pokemon thing, the thing that really immerses you is when you interact with the Pokemon and it pokes you or when you go to certain areas certain Pokemon and they have special messages. (ex. Ampharos in Lighthouse, Bellsprout in Sprout Tower, Togepi in Cerulean Gym, Bellossom in the Ecruteak Dance Theatre, Psychic types in Saffron Gym, Fire types in raining routes, Poliwag in Whirl islands etc.). That's the main thing I like because the neverneding walk cycle admittedly does get annoying after a while (although it makes sense for Flying type Pokemon sprites).

Not sure how unpopular this is but I really like the seasons in Gen 5 and how it affects what Pokemon you catch depending on the season- things like Mantine appearing in Autumn or Cubchoo being available earlier outside Twist Mountain in Winter. Yeah trying to find a Cryogonal outside Winter is a pain but you appreciate the encounter more when you see one.

I admit, I'm actually a little sad we don't have the seasons anymore. It was a really neat thing that made the world feel more alive. Sure, people gripe about not being to reach certain areas for a month or more, but that's how it is in our world too! (Unless you have a LOT of money)

Another cool thing about seasons is that the music changes slightly on most, if not all, routes depending on what the season is (Winter usually gets its own tunes while Spring and Summer share). It's really subtle sometimes, but it's a nice touch.

4.2k hype.

As someone who didn't really get to experience Gen 5, this sounds like a cool feature. It would be better if certain routes were more difficult or easier to get by depending by the season. It makes sense scientifically too, not all species are active every season.

4.2k hype.

I've been on Smogon 3 years longer and you have over a thousand more than me :O

This is actually something I disagree on. I personally think that it was an artistic decision which turned out really well due to the sprited nature of the games. For some context I remember going into Amnity Square and thinking that the walking looked really weird by comparison. In fact, I think that the leg animations in amnity square were horrific; they were way too fast if you ran, and as such it really killed the area for me. With the set intervals used in HGSS, it fixed this due to the leg movements when running being comparatively slow, making them look more believable during movement. It never bothered me when they were standing still because the stationary nature of sprites in other games always felt offputting to me due to the fact that it looks really static, and I like to see my 'mons be dynamic in the overworld as it means they don't look like dolls on the map when you're not moving.

That is only if you naively compare types.
Brock's Pokemon don't have any Rock or Ground moves and they have very poor Special, so Charmander actually has the advantage here. He actually does better than Bulbasaur here.
Against Misty Charmander does have a straight up disadvantage. No getting around it.
Against Lt Surge Charmander can learn the Dig TM and get the advantage.
Against Erika Charmander already has the advantage.
Against Koga Charmander again gets the advantage with Dig or Earthquake if you taught Dig to something else.
Against Sabrina Charmander is neutral, but still does better than the other two starters thanks to Slash.
Against Blaine Charmander has the advantage thanks to his Fire resistance and Dig/Earthquake.
Against Giovanni, Charizard is immune to Ground attacks and particularly Fissure and I don't think any of his Pokemon have Rock attacks. Furthermore, Charizard again has Dig/Earthquake.
Against Lorelei, I think Dewgong doesn't have any Water attacks, so you could use X Accuracy and Fissure to easily win this fight.
Against Bruno, you have type advantage against his Fighting Pokemon and the Onix are so terrible that no team should have trouble with them.
Against Agatha Charizard beats four of her five Pokemon with Dig/Earthquake.
Against Lance, Charizard again has the disadvantage, particularly against Aerodactyl.

If you're playing smart, Charmander actually has the advantage against all Gym Leaders and E4 members except Misty and Lance. Compare this to Bulbasaur, who sucks against Brock (thanks to him getting his first Special move at a relatively late level), Koga, Sabrina, Blaine and Agatha. Even Erika is a bad fight if she decides to spam Wrap. The only fights Venusaur has a clear advantage against are Misty, Giovanni and Lance (thanks to AI quirks causing him to spam Agility against Poison types).
