Tournament UPL XIV - Week 3

Follow all rules listed here.
Schedule via Smogon VMs. It's easier for me to make decisions for activity calls when I can actually see what went down with scheduling.
If you are unable to schedule with your opponent, please let your managers know ASAP so they can communicate that to me or the other team's managers for a potential substitute.
Substitutions may be made after a week has started. When making a substitution, please tag myself, the managers of the opposing team, and all of the players affected by the substitute to ensure that everyone is made aware. Players who have already played in the week or were subbed out in the same week cannot be subbed back in.
If a match remains incomplete by the time of the deadline, it will be subject to an activity call.
Replays are mandatory. Not only are they useful for confirming wins, they contribute to usage stats and allow the people who couldn't watch the games live to watch them later.
Managers: Please send me your lineups in the same format that I used to post pairings. It makes it much easier to post future rounds more quickly.

I was hoping to get to do a full recap of everything ADV by the time I wrote this(like, actual play by play breakdowns, because this tier is very special to me), but I only got about two games into four by the time I had to hit the hay last night and I don't want to risk not writing anything at all since this week is gonna be busier for me. I do want to give an honorary s/o to Eden for stepping in for the Drizzlers during their time of need last week(I did offer a quick crash course to him on the basics) and doing his best against Quarante - it was a fun and tbh, more competitive game than you might think on surface level. His game was one of the two I did review in depth, but it feels a bit wrong to post only two game reviews and not the other two. Maybe I'll be back with the other two later this week but depends on what I can do. An additional s/o to fatfighter2 for expressing a continued interest in seeing these written.

For full disclosure, and I only plan to say it once, I'm not supporting the drizzlers and decided to leave their discord by choice even before I received clarification on what happened, making me completely unaffiliated with any team atm. I also want to use this space very quickly to say Perry and Thor deserve absolutely zero shade or slander and, much like myself, they were not aware of what happened until it was announced(same with tour hosts, especially Eledyr who I've known from even before this and is nothing but a saint). It is deeply important to me that their reputation as high quality managers remain intact, and in the brief time I was working with them I have had nothing but good things to say about them.

I have absolutely no hard feelings about the extremely egregious mishap that went down and I know it wasn't meant in bad faith from either of the Drizzlers impacted(raph and myself). If you have any personal comments or concerns on the situation, you're welcome to DM me on Discord(not hard to find, I'm in the ubers disc) but all in all I hope that UPL can move forward in as normal and as competitive a manner as possible.

There's two reasons I mention this: one, for transparency's sake so anyone and everyone knows what naive/innocent mistake I made will never happen again, and two, so that you know I can now predict(or recap, depending on time) the Drizzlers' players with a lack of bias as I have been for everyone else so far.

Anyway, week 3 of the guide to Retro Tier analysis. Predicts and takes are never personal unless you think they are and if you do think so you should read the beginning of this sentence again. I might be back later this week with more in depth ADV analysis if I can sit down and get the other two done.

What we do here is write a bit about each player and anything super standout that happened last week before getting into what I think might happen for the week. I tend to also try to include a personal highlight of the week, which doesn't necessarily mean it has to be the best match of the week, but one that I think will be the most entertaining or exciting game to watch if you can manage to catch it live and not on a replay. Though full disclosure, last weekend I didn't get to catch all of GSC and RBY so if those sections are a little light this week, sorry about that.

Let's begin.

ADV Ubers: MMII vs THE_CHUNGLER: Both players are 1-1 this week, not that spreadsheet culture tells a full story or anything. I'm friends with both and so there's not really an implicit bias in who I want to win, but I have to bold MM2 based on the True Mainer Difference and also on the fact that he's less likely to throw in the builder. Chungler remains a dark horse in the sense that I truly believe he's still growing into a full sense of what to do in this tier without someone to support him, but he has shown a propensity for scouting well in this tier and that's proving to be exciting. His builds have so far appeared to be ones you look at and think "uh, is this really what you're bringing to tour," but they are responsive to the opponent he's facing and that adaptability is very valuable in a tour setting for ADV bo1. Week 1 he brought a build that, while flimsy in many ways, responded correctly to Heysup's trends and won. Week 2 there were some sloppy decisions which I do attribute to either tilt or inexperience, but in terms of trying to hit a scout correctly, one can argue he did do a lot of things right into Quylthlug's habits. MM2 is a little less predictable in the builder than those two, which may mean Chungler has to rely purely more on fundamental play. I'm kinda a hater of his first week bring as I feel it's trying to do a lot while defensively answering little, but week 2 he came back with a bring that is still experimental but imo, a very good take on Rain TarSkarmBliss that I will probably be sitting in the builder myself trying to recreate. I've been one of TTar's strongest soldiers since my return to the tier at the start of 2026 and it's high time we admit this mon is legit and no longer "niche."

ADV Ubers: Heysup vs a quylthulg: Mr. Offense himself vs stall lord. I'm just gonna say it flat out before we get there, this IS the highlight of the week and it's not close because watching what both bring here will be extremely interesting. I appreciate AJ's attempt to switch it up by bringing a Lax over Bliss last week and it's exciting to know that we'll be seeing more experimentation in the builder in this regard. My bolding is not meant to be a knock on quylthulg who is quite literally undefeated thus far, but more of a commentary on the fact I think there are more ways to build unpredictable offenses than there are to build stall-oriented builds. As a final note, to interject a personal sentiment, I was really happy to see AJ's build last week mirrors my own in the sense that it ran a Pursuit Tar + spinner(I opt into Starmie as I mentioned in my long ADV post a bit ago, but seeing Forre dusted off after the year of Skarmory was cool too) as I do think that you negate a lot of Tar's problems in the builder by removing spikes.

ADV Ubers: 64 Squares vs. Zcarlett: While I'm sure 64 isn't happy to have started his season 0-2, he had two very strong opponents in back to back weeks who many would rank as the best in the current pool. I did not like what he loaded week 1 and thought his week 2 bring was much better, but in all honesty I didn't watch that game with a super critical eye(yet - I will if I have time) and did so more as a fan, so I'm not sure of how to write more about this honestly. While I know Zcarlett knows the basic fundamentals of the tier, this game is kinda flying blind for me as to what to expect. I also think two weeks of top caliber opponents is enough for 64 to shake off some tier rust. I'd probably 60/40 this one rather than saying it full out with my chest. I will admit I'm a little disappointed to not see Eden slotted here because I think there's real potential, but I understand picking someone who is already a little more acclimated to the tier.

ADV Ubers: doso749 vs Quarante8: 48's experience as an ADVer is obviously well profiled and he has made a strong start to kick off this tier; even if his week 2 team lowkey struggled with matchup on paper, he took advantage of being the more composed/experienced player in this tier to win. I'm pretty sure doso had to sub out which means I really don't have more to say on him yet beyond his week 1 game whereas if he had gotten to play Heysup I might have a better understanding of where they were at. I gotta say though, assuming Neymar played the same team that Doso would've, sub CM thunder surf in the big 26 is a choice of all time that I would probably only endorse if you're someone like heysup or like me who's willing to load insane stuff. It unironically worked well into Heysup's Lati-less team, but whether that was a top level scout choice or just looking up old Smogdex sets and deciding to load it, I legitimately don't know. The Durians don't really have an ultra strong ADV support core, even if there's probably someone there who can offer preliminary builds. I don't want to throw any preemptive shade though, and I like surprises, so let's see how this goes.

Highlight of the week: Heysup vs a quylthulg. I would sacrifice every other game this week just to get to watch this one, and it's not close. I expect expert levels of cteaming while still seeing both adhere to their signature styles in this tier.

GSC Ubers: Waruchuu vs Fluore: Last week I said I didn't know who Fluore was and then they won over Conflict lol. This is the one game I did get to catch purely off intrigue alone from seeing who was bolded While that game did feature some really egregious luck(m2 special defense drop into pursuit trap putting flict's m2 out of commission, psychic crit on Lax to end the game), I want to think that's a real feather in their cap and the momentum will carry further. More than anything I just hope both show out though. Can't offer much more on Waru since he couldn't play last week.
GSC Ubers: Indulge in dreams vs betathunder: I worked with betathunder for two weeks and we ran some tests. Going forward this guy should be a top 4 consideration for every GSC Ubers tour he enters, higher if titans like Conflict and Vani are not in. I expect nothing but great things this tour. Indulge is no slouch as I've mentioned and is a good hand wherever they're put, but I just think beta will prep better and that will make the difference.
GSC Ubers: BFM vs. Conflict: Lmao I'm not even gonna try to hype this one up. Obviously this is my pick for game of the week, the potential here is crazy. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that BFM takes this because I think he will really try to show out here.
GSC Ubers: KeshBa54 vs vani: I like KeshBa a lot and think he's cool, but the GSC Maestro is gonna have a hard time getting past Vani with a W here imo.

Highlight of the week: BFM vs Conflict - To those who do not know anything about GSC Ubers, these are two of the most exciting players to watch both from a teambringing perspective as well as a player perspective. As long as the game isn't too rng heavy this should be the highlight of GSC without fail, possibly even of most of the old gens.

This section's gonna be brief as I wasn't in much of a mood to watch 4 bo3s last weekend. Rather than writing words here, I'm just gonna toss out some loose predicts.

RBY Ubers: Hammer vs. GSG - two friends of mine and both will be hungry to show their stuff on the stage. You should bold Hammer if you think more RBY Ubers experience counts, but bold GSG if you think more RBY experience OVERALL counts.

RBY Ubers: Fruhdazi vs Unowndragon - Two "old school" RBY Ubers players go head to head here. Dazi bounced back from a loss in W1 though I have to admit I didn't fully see how it went down. I bold Unown on experience, but Fruhdazi will surely be looking to establish a positive record this tour.

RBY Ubers: BeeOrSomething vs. Royzin - I honestly think both are capable clickers and it's gonna come down to who gets luckier.

RBY Ubers: Cake vs BlazingDark - Cake will win likely off more familiarity with the tier imo.

RBY Ubers Highlight of the week: if you're in the RBY community I would say Hammer vs GSG is the most social/fun experience for people to watch. From an overall Ubers perspective, it's probably Fruhdazi vs. Unown.
