This week's Next Best Thing is...

Week 28: Nidoking

:ss/Nidoking:

After proving itself to be a more fearsome Wallbreaker than its waifu, Nidoking has decided he wants to add some spice to his life. This week, it's your job to do just that and try and find a new set for him to enjoy!

Reserving a physical set!

:bw/nidoking:

Nidoking (M) @ Life Orb
Ability: Sheer Force
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Drill Run
- Poison Jab
- Superpower
- Ice Punch

Physical Nidoking actually has it's benefits with Drill Run being a tad stronger than Earthquake, solid Fighting-type coverage in Superpower and the ability to fully utilise it's base 102 Attack with Sheer Force. This also makes for a solid Chansey lure as you OHKO it cleanly with Superpower

:Nidoking: (M) @ Life Orb
Ability: Sheer Force
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Earth Power
- Sludge Wave
- Rest
- Sleep Talk

Nidoking can use this set to constantly stay alive to threaten defensive teams that rely on residual damage to take it out, all it needs are its stabs to pretty much ohko or 2hko the tier. Sleep talk is here so it can apply pressure even while asleep and even threaten offensive pokemon such as tapu bulu, aegislash, nihilego and primarina even while asleep and continute to check them.

Offensive Stealth Rocker Nidoking

Nidoking @ Life Orb
Ability: Sheer Force
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
- Sludge Wave
- Earth Power
- Super Fang/Ice Beam
- Stealth Rock

Nidoking is able to create some free turns due to its sheer power combined with a Life Orb, so you are even able to set-up SR on a predicted switch.
Super Fang is picked over Ice Beam (or whatever coverage move you need) because it cuts in half the health of a supposed incoming hard check/counter. With your so-called counter at 50% hp you will have an easier time to get past it.

Stealth Rock is the main hazard of the game because it is easy to set-up and puts pressure on the opponent.

This Nidoking is a good memeber of a team because it condenses some wallbreaking potential with the utility of an hazard setter.
Don't forget that absorbs Toxic Spikes because it is a Poison-type pokemon.

Nidoking (M) @ Life Orb
Ability: Sheer Force
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Hone Claws
- Earth Power
- Thunder
- Blizzard

This set is funky because of two reasons; it bluffs a physical set, and it lets you get a lot of surprise KOs you'd otherwise miss out on. Hone Claws boosts the accuracy of Thunder and Blizzard to a much more comfortable 93%, making them fairly reliable and extremely powerful. For an example of the extra power this set provides:

252+ SpA Life Orb Sheer Force Nidoking Ice Beam vs. 252 HP / 36 SpD Amoonguss: 315-372 (72.9 - 86.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock
252+ SpA Life Orb Sheer Force Nidoking Blizzard vs. 252 HP / 36 SpD Amoonguss: 382-452 (88.4 - 104.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock

252+ SpA Life Orb Sheer Force Nidoking Thunderbolt vs. 248 HP / 0 SpD Moltres: 312-369 (81.4 - 96.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ SpA Life Orb Sheer Force Nidoking Thunder vs. 248 HP / 0 SpD Moltres: 382-452 (99.7 - 118%) -- 93.8% chance to OHKO

252+ SpA Life Orb Sheer Force Nidoking Ice Beam vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Kommo-o: 263-309 (74.2 - 87.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
252+ SpA Life Orb Sheer Force Nidoking Blizzard vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Kommo-o: 322-380 (90.9 - 107.3%) -- 81.3% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock

Obviously there are some harsh tradeoffs, poor accuracy before a boost for example, and not having Sludge Wave makes you less immediately threatening to stuff like Primarina and the Rotoms (though they still have to respect the possibility) but you can get some really nice surprise KOs with this.

:ss/nidoking:
Nidoking @ Life Orb
Ability: Sheer Force
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
- Earth Power
- Sludge Wave
- Thunderbolt
- Taunt

Taunt Nidoking was occasionally used in OU when Nidoking was there, and here in UU it can be used for similar purposes: it allows it to beat Chansey without having a dead slot in every other matchup, and it helps prediction around defensive Pokemon like Celesteela, Rotom-W, and Amoonguss, since it is much easier to switch into them if they are unable to use status moves.

Focus Energy
:ss/nidoking:
Nidoking (M) @ Leftovers
Ability: Sheer Force
EVs: 252 Def / 216 SpA / 40 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Focus Energy
- Thunderbolt
- Blizzard
- Earth Power
Click Focus Energy and win, innit This thing gives us a lot of coverage with T-Bolt and Blizzard (and also mentioning Earth Power cuz it's a STAB.) Focus Energy gives us a chance to KO most threats of Nidoking, with additional recovery using Leftovers. Pelipper dies to a Thunderbolt and Aegislash dies to an Earth Power, and once you set up Focus Energy your enemies are practically done for. Watch out for Scald though.

You can also run Thunder, however it only has 70% accuracy and you can only boost that up if opposing Pelipper (or yours) come in.

Nidoking @ Life Orb
Ability: Sheer Force
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
- Sludge Wave
- Earth Power
- Thunderbolt/Ice Beam
- Substitute

Substitute makes it so you can more freely take advantage of switches and really lets it wreak havoc on the opponent's team for longer. There isn't too much for me to say about this Nidoking other than it plays the same as the regular old vanilla king set with substitute making it so you can't get status'd and harder for the opponent to knock out.

Nidoking (M) @ Life Orb
Ability: Sheer Force
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Substitute
- Focus Punch
- Earthquake
- Poison Jab

Choice Scarf Nidoking

:ss/nidoking:
Nidoking (M) @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Sheer Force
EVs: 88 Atk / 148 SpA / 128 SpD / 144 Spe
Mild Nature
- Earth Power / Sludge Wave / Flamethrower
- Stone Edge / Rock Slide
- Ice Beam
- Thunderbolt

I'm persistent that this set is good, and it will always be. If you say this set is bad, I will go cry at the corner. (jk) This Nidoking set acts as an fanstastic lure, albeit a little weak. This set can lure people into thinking this, "YAY MY ROTOM-HEAT CAN GET SOME CHIP" then you pull out stone edge, but they still think they can get some chip because it lived, but you uno reverse card and outspeed the rotom-heat. (You can kill it with two edges provided you actually hit.) The Attack EV's are for killing the Standard Rotom-Heat with no defense investment, just max HP. The SpAtk EV's are for 2HKOing Rotom-Wash after SR. The Speed EV's are for outspeeding the 115's with a positive nature and the SpDef EV's are for having a 75% chance to live a hydro pump from Rotom-Wash. (provided it actually hits)
