UU Simple Questions Thread

Is Amoonguss any good? I can see it having a niche of Spore + Regenerator but I don't see way too much reason to use it over other Grassers like Roserade or even Tangrowth.

The fighting resistance is really nice too and it also has Clear Smog for setup sweepers and can run stuff like Stun Spore

That said however the ability to sorta check zammer and the ground resistance and stuff on Tangrowth is nice

It is. Spore is really nice, it has foul play, and clear smog. Obviously this isn't OU where it achieves relevance by walling Keldeo, but its a decent pivot into things like Mega-Swampert or Suicune. I mean, obviously it faces competition but its got a niche.

Nasty Plot actually means it's a pretty capable stallbreaker that can overwhelm bulkier teams, and SR + 3 attacks LO Azelf is still decent. Mostly though, Alakazam is better as a straight special attacker.

Besides NP and SR sets, I guess something Azelf has over Zam is access to Fire Blast coverage, over Zam's Focus Blast. It gives Azelf a nice Psychic/Fire/Fairy coverage, which allows it to bypass common Psychic checks in this meta like Escavalier and SpD Forry, things Zam can only touch with HP Fire which is kind bad imo unless as a lure or smth.

How viable is trapping in UU? With Sylveon set to drop any day now, would something like Dugtrio be good for trapping Nidos/Cruel/Croak switch-ins? Is Magneton any good? Help a brother out.

the only reliable trapping in UnderUsed is Pursuit Trapping. dugtrio is simply too frail and weak to be a consistent member of your team. running psyshock/psychic on your sylveon is a great way to catch the poisons you mentioned when they try to switch in. i've used magneton on a rain team once to trap empoleon and ferroseed in order to make things easier for kingdra and kabutops, but even then it was very situational and useless most of the time. a good rule of thumb while building is sticking to mons that are high on the viability rankings, and i'm certain that dug/mag are nowhere near the top of those lists (for good reason).

good luck!

So in UU is there any reason for Sylveon to run some defensive investment? Like is hydreigon or another general-special attacker gonna put in enough damage on the physical side to warrant some investing?

Assuming a cleric set, Sylveon should always run at least some defensive investment (just like the Florges cleric set from before). Sylveon doesn't need max SpD to check the special attackers it is used to check, nor does it allow it to beat the ones it loses to (Psyshock users, Mega Houndoom, Nidoqueen, to name a few). However, physical investment helps a lot versus Salamence, Mega Aerodactyl, Psyshock Alakazam, and Fighting-types. The best spreads are 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD Bold and 252 HP / 240 Def / 16 SpD Calm (the latter hits a jump point in SpD).

Is there any merit to running a Calm Mind set for Cresselia over Reuniclus? I guess Moonblast helps against Sableye and other Dark-types and it has higher bulk overall, but I don't think being so much more vulnerable to status and being really passive without boosts is worth it. (I guess SubCM could work for dodging status and with Cress' bulk it could live a lot of attacks and heal itself up with Lefties while in the Sub)

Moonblast is basically why since it doesn't force you to rely on Focus Blast to hit Dark-types. It's bulk is also better by a large percentage which eases setup a lot more

Not getting blocked by Sableye is definitely part of it, but in general, Cresselia is a much better defensive check to a large swath of the metagame than Reuniclus. Calm Mind sets allow you to still provide offensive pressure while checking those threats.

Reuniclus is much harder to stop, but is less reliable as a check to many strong attackers, especially boosting sweepers like Salamence (although there are some things it is actually better versus, in particular CroCune). It's a more offensive choice, while Cresselia plays more as a defensive pivot that can also sweep.

Is there any reason to run Cleric Florges anymore when the metagame has Sylveon?

Yes there are. First of, florges does not have to rely on wish protect to keep itself healthy thanks to synthesis. Wish+tech set either risks giving free setup turns to stuff like cobalion or can potentially be roared out. Synthesis helps with this. Second is the speed tier. Florges has a better speed tier which helps him outspeed stuff like adamant conk with rather minimal speed investment. And as a bonus, florges is still a better specially defensive pivot/wall overall

I wanted to ask how I can get better in UU ? I am playing hours for hours since yesterday and I can get past the 1300s. The highest number of points I peeked was 1370 something and that's it. Maybe the team I ladder with is bad that what I figured out and I wanted to ask If someone could help me to build a better team or even "ghost" me in Pokemon Showdown. I would really really appreciate the help.

there are multiple options for improving. http://www.smogon.com/forums/forums/battling-101.42/ B101, the tutoring program is one of them. Also, if you're struggling to get higher up, avoid playing on autopilot and actually think through your plays and gameplan. Using a different team may help too, if you find yourself losing to common threats. Lastly, getting ghosted doesn't help you get better at all and is actually not even allowed! D:

Here is the Pastbin to a team I built. I wanted to ask for help here from someone who really understands how the UU Tier works. I was helped by rater in Pokemon Showdown too but it kinda didn't help because I can't get past 1230 ELO.

EDIT: I don't need help with the team in the pastebin anymore. I have got a different question. I got more into the UU Tier and I wanted to ask when exactly UU Tournaments do take place. I mean the actual ones from the smogon website.

What would be the best Poke/Set than can use Wish to use in tandem with Mega Aggron? Should ideally be able to use Heal Bell/Aromatherapy as well. I thought Blissey, but I don't like it because it doesn't cover Aggron's fighting weak. Could Gardevoir effectively run a Cleric set? Maybe something from below UU? Help appreciated.

Florges or Sylveon are tried and true Wish Pass partners with Clerical abilities in Aromatheraphy and Heal Bell respectively.
