Round 16's Victim is:
Swords Dance Cobalion
cobalion.gif

Cobalion @ Rocky Helmet / Shuca Berry / Fightinium Z / Steelium Z
Ability: Justified
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance
- Stealth Rock / Rock Polish
- Iron Head
- Close Combat

Cobalion showed up on numerous teams last week in UUPL and ended up having a solid winrate. Its Calm Mind set is also hugely potent but we'll be focusing on the Swords Dance set for this round which is customizable on what the team requires Cobalion to accomplish. Between being an offensive Rocker or a Double Dance sweeper alongside Z-Moves and berries, Cobalion has numerous tricks up its sleeve that can be cleverly bluffed or hid throughout the match. Alright schedule's changing for this round only. Get submissions in by Friday and the Discussion Phase will be Thursday. Round 17 will still begin Sunday. Hope you all had a great Easter/Passover!

Quagsire @ Leftovers
Ability: Unaware
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Relaxed Nature
- Scald
- Earthquake
- Recover
- Toxic

Takes 0 from Coba's attacks and has Unaware + reliable recovery. Also Earthquake. Imagine being an UU mon walled by a PU one ugh cancelled. counter uwu.

I just noticed the way you said I won was a smash reference, and I appreciate that.

Anyways, here's the Hard Counter Mega Slowbro!

slowbro-mega.gif

Slowbro @ Slowbronite
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 76 Def / 180 SpD
Bold Nature
- Scald
- Calm Mind
- Slack Off
- Ice Beam

Slowbro in it's normal form counters Cobalion, but Mega Bro takes it up a step. Where as normal Slowbro would take about 48%-56% from +2 Fightinium, Mega Slowbro takes only 32%-37% from +2 Fightinium, which is the most powerful attack Cobalion can unleash. Slowbro in it's normal form has access to regenerator, allowing it to come in on Coba many times, and both normal and Mega have access to Slack Off, letting Mega Bro be a consistent counter, Mega'd or not.

Reserving niche pick Jellicent

d3jsd3v-67995d44-06f1-4a60-98ca-f91f12260da6.png

Jellicent @ Leftovers
Ability: Water Absorb
EVs: 252 HP / 212 Def / 44 Spe
Bold Nature
- Hex
- Taunt
- Will-O-Wisp
- Recover

Jellicent is a counter to Cobalion because it resists its first STAB in Iron head and furthermore is completly immune to its fighting type attacks.
Jellicent is also bulky enough to take even a +4 Corkscrew Crash from Cobalion.
The Jelly Fish can go for a Will-O-Wisp to shut down Cobalion and cripples it - Jellicent can Recover every damage pretty comfortably as well.
Because of the points stated above Jellicent is a really good COUNTER to the Swords of Justice member Cobalion.

Calcs:
+2 252 Atk Cobalion Corkscrew Crash (160 BP) vs. 252 HP / 212+ Def Jellicent: 191-225 (47.2 - 55.6%) -- 21.5% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
into
+2 252 Atk Cobalion Iron Head vs. 252 HP / 212+ Def Jellicent: 96-113 (23.7 - 27.9%) -- possible 5HKO after Leftovers recovery
+4 252 Atk Cobalion Iron Head vs. 252 HP / 212+ Def Jellicent: 144-169 (35.6 - 41.8%) -- 85.5% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

0 SpA Jellicent Hex (130 BP) vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Cobalion: 160-189 (49.5 - 58.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after burn damage

Moltres @ Flyinium Z
Ability: Flame Body
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Defog
- Hurricane
- Fire Blast
- Roost

Moltres is able to defog happily on cobalion as it forces it out, and threatens it with burns when clicking it's stabs. It can OHKO with a fire blast. As long as rocks aren't up, it can switch in on cobalion every time and force it out without being threatened, as it even guarantee lives a +2 fightinium-z.

However, it is only a hard check as if rocks are up it can't take a +2 z-move or a +2 close combat, but given lack of rocks it can swap in everytime and win, and can always threaten to burn, and can even win with rocks up provided it gets in same turn (ie. via a u-turn or something as coba comes in), giving a chance to roost / defog / attack safely.

252 SpA Moltres Fire Blast vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Cobalion: 458-540 (141.7 - 167.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO

+2 252 Atk Cobalion Close Combat vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Moltres: 166-196 (51.7 - 61%) -- guaranteed OHKO after stealth rocks
+2 252 Atk Cobalion All-Out Pummeling (190 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Moltres: 263-310 (81.9 - 96.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO after stealth rocks
+2 252 Atk Cobalion Corkscrew Crash (160 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Moltres: 222-261 (69.1 - 81.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO after stealth rocks

salazzle.png

Salazzle @ Black Sludge
Ability: Corrosion
EVs: 248 HP / 60 Def / 200 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Toxic
- Protect
- Flamethrower
- Substitute

There is probably a better ev spread out there, but I just gave it the minimum speed it really needs to have more Def investment. Salazzle is a hard check to Cobalion virtue to its typing, but it has piss poor defensive stats and is weak to SR which Coba can set. Cobalion can also eat a Flamethrower and proceed to almost always garuantee OHKO Salazzle at +2 with Fightinium-Z. You have Protect to outplay this, but it is still a 50/50 scenario in this case as they could Rock Polish on it. So yeah Salazzle as a hard check.
758.png
0 SpA Salazzle Flamethrower vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Cobalion: 276-326 (85.4 - 100.9%) -- 6.3% chance to OHKO
638.png
+2 252 Atk Cobalion All-Out Pummeling (190 BP) vs. 248 HP / 60 Def Salazzle: 332-391 (97.9 - 115.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Black Sludge recovery

252 Atk Cobalion Close Combat vs. 248 HP / 60 Def Salazzle: 105-124 (30.9 - 36.5%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Black Sludge recovery

252 Atk Cobalion Iron Head vs. 248 HP / 60 Def Salazzle: 70-83 (20.6 - 24.4%) -- 5.4% chance to 4HKO after Black Sludge recovery
The dmg calc is broken right now, so I can't factor in SR or Black Sludge calcs (I'm too lazy to do it manually), so I'll just update that later.

Doublade @ Eviolite
Ability: No Guard
EVs: 240 HP / 252 Atk / 16 SpD
IVs: 0 Spe
Brave Nature
- Swords Dance
- Gyro Ball
- Shadow Claw / Sacred Sword
- Shadow Sneak

Doublade is a solid counter to Cobalion, being immune to its Fighting STAB, and taking its Steel type attacks extremely well and setting up in its face and cleaving through it with a +2 Shadow Claw/Sacred Sword.

+2 252 Atk Cobalion Corkscrew Crash (160 BP) vs. 240 HP / 0 Def Eviolite Doublade: 95-112 (44.3 - 52.3%) -- 19.9% chance to 3HKO
(i dont think i need to mention its fighting type attacks here)
+2 252 Atk Cobalion Corkscrew Crash (160 BP) vs. 240 HP / 0 Def Eviolite Doublade: 95-112 (44.3 - 52.3%) -- 19.9% chance to 3HKO

chandelure.gif

Chandelure @ Leftovers
Ability: Flame Body
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Fire Blast
- Shadow Ball
- Calm Mind
- Substitute

SubCM Chandelure is a super solid counter to SD Cobalion. Simply put, Cobalion can do little to nothing to Chandelure which can choose to either blast Cobalion with Fire Blast or set up with CM and go for a sweep. Very maximum Cobalion can do (crits not included because hax :/) is 75% if Steelium Z.

Reserving scarf drei as check
Actually reserving Tenta

Tentacruel @ Black Sludge / Icium Z
Ability: Clear Body
EVs: 252 HP / 112 Def / 144 Spe
Timid Nature
- Scald
- Rapid Spin
- Haze
- Sludge Bomb / Toxic Spikes

Tenta is a hard check at the very least. Deterring Coba’s Rocks with Rapid Spin, burning it with Scald, and Hazing its hoosts makes it very difficult for Coba to make progress in the match. Tenta can even use this time to set TSpikes, pressuring the team even more.

As far as counters go, I think (no bias here) that Slowbro and Jellicent are the best counters here. Being that I can't vote for my own (sounds really arrogant im sorry :I), I will probably vote for Jellicent as a counter. Yes, Doublade and Chandy resist or are immune to Cobalion's STAB's, but the lack of recovery is detrimental in the long run. Doublade still works as a counter, however, Chandelure drops after Stealth Rocks to +2 Steelium as shown by this calc:

+2 252 Atk Cobalion Corkscrew Crash (160 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Chandelure: 222-261 (85 - 100%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock

tl;dr - fat waters with recovery are the best counters and chandy doesn't really counter Cobalion simply because you resist or are immune to it's stabs.

edit: get sniped Katy

edit 2: thanks for pointing out the calc sucks Gum

anyways point still stands.

Hello,

to start the discussion slate here:
  • Sickist Mega Slowbro: this pokemon - even tho its usage isnt that high at UU - is a really good hard counter in my opinion, resisting both STABs and can counteract with switchins to any of Cobalions attacks, soak up hits and it can even use prior to Mega its good reliable ability in Regenerator. I think this one really caught my eye as it is a nightmare for Cobalion to be against. I think I would vote for this mon if it came down to the voting slate. It's a really good counter and I would recommend tryin this as a Cobalion counter.
  • Moltres: I like this Fire Bird a lot and it serves as a really good hard check here, resisting both Cobalions STABs and if it switches on an Iron Head Cobalion has to fear a Burn caused by Flame Body. I really like this as a hard check.
  • Salazzle the Lizard also is a nice suggestion and really good tho it has to be wary about a +2 AoP but in overall it is a nice niche pick here.
  • Chandelure also caught my eye, the usage went down a bit recently but it still serves those roles perfectly, I think this mon is a cool or rather fire suggestion.
  • Tentacruel also is a good great suggestion here and Tentacruel does in general a good job as a spinner.
  • Doublade also serves a good role as a counter
Last but not least I wanna say something whats on my mind and caught my eye in the submission slate: Gyro Ba11 your submission is a great one but please don't downgrade other peoples submission with calling them "inferior" everyone here did a great job you, Sickist, and all the others with in general super lit submissions.

Thanks for reading :)

Edit: saw Sickist post already so I practically didn't start it off.

wow ok so y'all forgot abt good mon quag :(

But yeah I'd say that Mega Slowbro is the most consistent counter, reliable recovery really helps it. Jelli is also a good one but it doesn't have as much bulk as Mega Slowbro, Doublade, although the latter is really easy to chip, same thing with Tentacruel, but not as much. Also I'm sorry but Chandelure just isn't that good of a counter. It has a typing advantage but that's pretty much it and it can't even setup on Coba. Btw Sickist that calc is wrong, the calc isn't working rn.

Salazzle is a heat af check and so is Moltres, but I'd say Salazzle is the superior pick due to its Speed allowing it to outspeed Cobalion. If Scizorphobic was good and actually did his post, I think I would vote for Gengar, as in general it's a less niche pick than Salazzle.

Awwwww shiut, Sorry I forgot Quagsire, Gum
Quagsire is also a good reliable check, Unaware is just a nice ability and can be really annoying for Cobalion, the Swords of Justice Leader doesnt like Quagsires presence at all.

I def agree with Sickist and Gum that fat waters are the best Coba counters, while Molt is the best counter that can remove hazards (Tenta’s recovery options have to be picked between Icium and Sludge and AOP is very scary). In particular, I’m going to vote either Quag or Bro since Unaware is busted and Regen guarantees that Coba can’t really do much (especially when paired with stuff like Defog Drei). As for checks, I don’t think its a contest (though it would be if Phobic had gotten Gar in, which he still might) as Molt is perfect. Only the niche Stone Edge and CM Electrium variants really threaten it, which aren’t here so eh.

Will talk about counters first.

172333
- Amazing counter, though no regenerator unlike slowbro means it needs to make sure it stays healthy as 2 close combats on swap in + next turn could theoretically do over 70% damage. But unaware + eating other hits like ease completely shuts coba down as long as quag stays healthy. Does however block volt switch on sets running it in 4th move, which is something slowbro can't do.

172334
- Nothing cobalion can really do as long as this thing is alive honestly. Won't stop rocks / volt switch but stops coba from ever being able to do anything as long as its alive. Definitely be voting for this.

172335
- Resistance to one stab, immunity to the other makes this a great coba answer. Willo wisp on top of that means cobalion can't just set up to +6 on you. Like quagsire needs to stay healthy due to +2 z-iron head doing over half damage though. If 2 votes for counters, probably be voting this as second.

172336
- My least favourite counter here, as while it has an immunity and resistance like jellicent, it has no recovery, is outsped and is crippled by +2 corkscrew crash after rocks. But flame body does punish it for clicking iron head though.

172337
- While theoretically a nice counter due to how little damage it takes, even sacred sword isnt a guaranteed 2hko, and shadow claw is only a 4hko without boosts. This means that rocky helmet cobalion can actually get quite large chip on doublade itself, coupled with lack of recovery this actually makes it not an amazing counter. The z sets on the other hand are dealt with better by this, but can still bide their time to break through since doublade has no recovery.

Now for checks.

172338
- This is a nice check to cobalion, but it can't punish switches too well since it isn't clicking toxic on coba unless it predicts, which could go horribly wrong, which makes an offensive set seem like a better check to coba here honestly since you aren't taking advantage of corrosion here. Also the low OHKO chance means coba could technically win. To me it would have made more sense to put those 60 EVs into spA too, to put the OHKO chance up to 44%.

172340
- Tentacruel is an ok check, but lack of recovery and pretty mediocre bulk makes it struggle a lot really. A +2 all out pummelling actually hits it for a very large chunk of HP, so the icium-z set would do a better job here since it could full heal and haze at same time, but that steals a z crystal for a pretty meh cause. Tentacruel at best here just deals with coba when able to swap in before it sets up, or to cancel a set up sweep once, after which it won't have the hp to do it anymore. It also has to effectively rely on scald burns if coba stays in, because of the +2 AOP damage if the coba is brazen. It can rapid spin away rocks if given a swap into coba as it rocks, but if coba decides to SD on the predicted spin it could be dangerous due to +2 AOP again.

172342
- (If this one actually gets completed), gonna assume this is sub fightinium-z, in which case its also a nice check, but could end up with your z crystal easily baited, after which you have to rely on focus miss to do it. It also can't really check a double dance set unless it gets in before the rock polish.
