Venusaur (Curse)

I always think Body Slam is a better alternative than Return on bulky set up sets. The chance of paralizing something can't be overlooked IMO.

Hmm yeah but Venusaur will lower his speed anyway and at -6 even paralysed opponent will outspeed. Also the higher base power of Return is prefered in the long run.

Looks like a cool idea in theory, but I don't really like it. The Defense boosts have been of hardly any use, and I've almost always rather preferred Swords Dance in the cases I've used it. Arcanine also still beat me after two Curse Boosts, and he's probably the most common physical switch-in to Venusaur.

I have had a chance to test this, and I mostly agree with Eo. It has more problems and more counters without the Speed and it just didn't do enough with the boosts. I won't "officially" reject it though, since I'm on leave.

Just because Venusaur uses Curse doesn't mean you should use it as your main physical wall. The EV spread is nearly the same as the specially defensive one but unlike that set this one actually packs a punch. And unlike the offensive SD version this set can take a hit or two (resisted or not). It's also a great pokemon to use late game if it can set up easily (compare it to Cradily without Sandstorm).

And about Arcanine, which Venusaur set bare the Scarfed one can actually beat it?
But I got your point. I'm working a different spread now so Venusaur can survive a Flareblitz at +2 and KO Arcanine in return. But in my opinion that would only weaken Venusaur pretty decent SpD stat to take out Arcanine. After that, Venusaur would probably be so low on health it is revenged killed easily. So it would still be best to switch out against Arcanine or at least wait with setting up until it is defeated.

I actually like this set. After Arcanine is gone, Venusaur becomes a beast. Also, Venusaur's Defense boosts actually help out a lot, because it helps out its Fighting resist, while boosting the flowery beast's attacks. However, I think you should add something in there about also having someone like Milotic on your team. I hope my suggestions helped!

I think Absol should be mentioned as a counter or at least a check. With Super Luck and any high CH rate move, especially Psycho Cut, you run a much higher risk of a critical hit, which cuts right through Curse. It can also stall with Pressure, should it choose Pressure over SL, although not very well.

Arcticblast is right about the Crit issue. I will verify from past experiences, and I almost had the battle in the bag when it happened. Just substitute Curse Regirock for Curse Venusaur and Drapion with Sniper and Earthquake for Absol with Super Luck and Psycho Cut. >.< Bad memories...

Thanks, I added Absol as a counter as with SL it might crit Venusaur to death. The ones with Pressure can not outstall me however as Absols defenses are paperthin and even a +1 Return / Power Whip does good enough damage.

The thing that I don't like about this set is that unlike other Venusaur sets (heck, even other defensive Venusaur sets), it can't immediatly threaten a switch in. All other Venusaur can Sleep Powder and defensive versions can Leech Seed on top of it, while this just screams "Hai Arcanine, Moltres, Alakazam! Come rape me!" These are Pokemon you really don't want to be giving free turns to.

Also, you might want to mention Rhyperior as a teammate. It allows you to run Return because he screws over Registeel/Steelix/Arcanine/whatever EQ was gonna hit.

I dont think Earthquake really needs to be included at all. Registeel isnt doing anything to you unless it is a curse variant also, in which case you should get out, hitting altaria is more important. EQ would really just catch a Fire type on the switch, but in the same way Return would catch Flyers coming in. SR neuters both Fire and Flying so I think Return gets the nod for letting you beat altaria and because Registeel just cries against this set. Nice job on the writeup of this (very) cool set.

Thanks Friar ^^
Yeah Power Whip and Return give to best coverage. I'm using that combination too.
I don't know about just mentioning Earthquake in AC. I think it is useful enough to deserve a slash.

I was just wondering how Leech seed might fare on this set? I've seen Fizz use it and I know it intends to hang around a while. It might give Venusaur a chance vs dedicated physical walls that switch in that aren't even neutral to its attacks.

Tested this further a while ago but I forgot to post. Venusaur is simply not physically bulky enough to survive SE physical attacks even after 1-2 curses. They still OHKO flat out. It's also too easy to wall.
