ViAbilities is a Galar Dex mod surrounding the idea of making every ability useful and balanced in some form, focusing mainly on abilities that have too specific of a niche, competitively useless abilities, abilties that only take effect in Doubles, and abilities with major RNG aspects. Slates are done in two stages:

Stage One
In Stage One, abilities are submitted to be changed, either with an FFA slate wherein any ability on the list (which will be posted after the base format issue is resolved) can be changed, or by regular slates where 5 abilities are chosen and submissions are limited to those five. In both cases, no more than 5 abilities can be submitted per user. Keep these rules and guidlines in mind when submitting abilities:

  • Stay away from RNG mechanics. Abilities that increase a user's evasion, lower an opponent's accuracy, clone Serene Grace, or involve freezing, confusion, sleep, or infatuation will be vetoed. Existing abilties with these effects will be looked at in future slates.
  • Abilities should make sense thematically. Healer causing a burn on switch-in, for example, would be vetoed as it makes little thematic sense for the ability and the Pokemon that would use the ability. In this scenario, you would want Healer to maintain its general purpose of supporting teammates through buffs, removal of status, restoring HP, etc.
  • Abilities with identical or near-identical functions may be grouped together in one submission, such as Blaze, Torrent, Overgrow, and Swarm, or Power of Alchemy and Receiver, though this is not required.

Stage Two
In Stage Two, Pokemon whose abilties were changed in Stage One are given slight buffs in order to make better use of their new abilities. For each ability, three Pokemon will win the vote and get buffed.

  • No more than 25 BST can be added to a Pokemon in a single submission, no more than 15 points can be added to or removed from any specific stat, and a maximum of 3 moves can be added.
  • Pokemon RU and under may have up to 15 points removed from a stat to add to other stats, so long as there is still no more than a net addition of 25 BST. Those RUBL and above may not have any amount of points removed from one stat to contribute to another.
  • If a Pokemon in an evolutionary line has an ability changed by the first part of a slate, but the final evolution does not, the ability is carried to the final evolution regardless of whether or not buffs were submitted, but buffs may still be submitted for it. (i.e. Combee gets Honey Gather but Vespiquen does not. If no buffs are submitted for Vespiquen after the first stage of a slate buffs Honey Gather, it will get Honey Gather and no buffs, but if a Vespiquen buff wins in the second stage of a slate, the buffs and Honey Gather will be added.)
  • A Pokemon with multiple abilities eligible to be buffed may only be buffed twice. Regardless of how sensible someone's buffs might be, +75 BST and 9 hand-picked new moves on something like Weavile, Drapion, or Klinklang would be absolutely absurd.
  • If a changed ability has less than 5 fully-evolved users, that ability may be put on another Pokemon.
  • Abilties do not need to be removed from a Pokemon in order to add another.

Voting Rules
  • Voting in set slates (Stage 1): Each determined slate will have a certain amount of abilities to be modified, and for each of the abilities, voters will vote for their top 3 choices, with the #1 slot being worth 3 votes, #2 worth 2, and #3 worth 1. Self-votes cannot exceed 3 (One #1 placement, one #2 and #3, or 3 #3 placements).
  • Voting in FFA slates (Stage 1): Any ability can be submitted, voters choose their top 5 choices, and order does not matter. One self-vote is permitted, but under the condition that all 5 potential votes are used.
  • Voting in Stage 2: For each buffed ability, voters vote for their top 3 choices with the same method as in set slates. 3 Pokemon will win for each ability. In the event multiple submissions are for the same Pokemon, only the one with the highest number of votes will win. Self-votes cannot exceed 3.
  • Voting with 5 or less submitted abilities (FFA Stage 1) / 1 submitted ability (Set Slate Stage 1) / 3 or less submitted Pokemon for an ability(Stage 2): Each submission can be given a "yes" or "no". If 50% or more of the votes on a submission are "yes"'s, the submission is added. No self-votes are permitted in this scenario, though one can abstain from voting on their submission.

V2 Slate #1: Bottom of the Barrel
Ball Fetch, Honey Gather, Slow Start and Defeatist will be the subjects of this first slate, the former having 0 in-battle use and the latter being outright detrimental to their users. Have fun making these worthwhile!

Ability: Slow Start
New Effect: Only halves Speed.
Competitive Reasoning: Now Pokemon with this ability can be part of cores with Trick Room setters, switching in after the move is used and wreaking havoc, and overall actually having incentive to stay in during those turns.
Thematic Reasoning: Slow Start should logically make you move slower, not necessarily weaker, given how it has Slow in its name.

Ability: Defeatist
New Effect: 1.5x to both offenses when above 50% HP
Competitive Reasoning:
Adds an actual risk-reward element to the ability rather than just sucking
Thematic Reasoning:
The user is all amped up but easily falters upon taking too much damage

Ability: Ball Fetch
New Effect: 50% damage taken and +1 Attack when hit by a "ball"/ballistic move
Competitive Reasoning:
Storm Drain version of Bulletproof that gives you stronk but in return for less damage absorption
Thematic Reasoning:
Funny pun, he fetch the bol

Ability: Ball Fetch
New Effect: All ball and ballistic moves are used twice, both times at 0.65 times the power.
Competitive Reasoning:
Haha Boltund Electro Ball go Nyooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooom
Thematic Reasoning:
It uses the BALL, and then FETCHes the ball again, and uses it.

Ability: Honey Gather
New Effect: Whenever any berry is consumed, this pokemon regenerates 12.5 percent of its health, and lowers the speed of the opponent one stage.
Competitive Reasoning:
Any berry now has the upgrade of lowering the opponent's speed and regenerating an extra 12.5%
Thematic Reasoning:
Honey Yum Yum and Sticky

Ability: Defeatist
New Effect: Normal effect but if it KOs a Pokemon, it removes that effect and then gain a 1.5x bonus to it's Attack and Special Attack.
Competitive Reasoning: It would allow a Pokemon with the Ability to be able to get a hefty Attack buff that is a challenge to gain.
Thematic Reasoning: person who is a Defeatist is negative and doesn't think it could succeed, so I thought that the Pokemon would be able to get more hopeful after proving to itself that it can succeed.

Ability: Honey Gather
Modified Effect: The chance of gathering Honey is now equal to (User’s Level)/100. Now has a chance to activate at the end of each turn instead of activating at the end of a battle. Pokemon with this ability can consume Honey as a Sitrus Berry clone.
Competitive Reasoning: Effectively restores 25% HP at the end of each turn when below 50% HP as long as you’re not holding an item, which is a really nice boost to bulk, even at the cost of Boots.
Thematic Reasoning: Honey’s used for nothing but selling in Gen 8, so it’s fine to have high odds of activation, and a new effect, while limited to the mons that gather it, helps to make it useful again.

Ability: Defeatist
New Effect: When this pokemon is at half health its defenses are halved.
Competitive Reasoning: There is no reason to run defensive archeops, but there's no real reason to buff its offenses with its ability either. While not fantastic Archeops doesn't really need an ability to make it into a supremely powerful pokemon.
Thematic Reasoning: As a self proclaimed defeatist myself, I wanted to go with the idea of becoming more vulnerable without the same crippling effect that the original ability had. I figured that if I just made its defenses halved it would work since now it becomes more vulnerable to pretty much all attacks.

Ema Skye

Work!
Ability: Defeatist
New Effect: Gains a boost to the respective offensive stat when KOing a foe. Drops the respective stat if the attack does not KO.
Competitive: Big cleaner ability who is somewhat inconsistent until the late game. Probably best on Choice sets since they can pivot, and the speed is viable. That said, going mixed is also possible to avoid dropping a stat too much.
Thematic Reason: User is sad if it doesn't KO.

Ability: Ball Fetch
New Effect: At the end of a turn, if the user has no item, it takes the foe's item.
Competitive: Going without items isn't great, but it has some solid support via item removal.
Thematic Reason: Dog doesn't have a ball in its mouth. Dog goes fetching a new one. (If you have a dog, you know this is relatable, and you know they will claim stuff that is yours)

Ability: Honey Gather
New Effect: If the user is holding a berry and makes contact with the foe, the foe's speed is dropped. Grass- and Bug-type Pokemon are immune. If the user is a bug type, it gets a 30% boost to its attacks when attacking a foe with reduced speed.
Competitive: Tangling Hair/Gooey but flipped around (like Poison Point vs Poison Touch). An offensive boost for Bug-types since they're a common resist, and another defensive boost for Grass-types.
Thematic Reason: Honey is sticky but flowers produce it and bugs love it.

Ability: Honey Gather
New Effect: Traps Bug-type Pokémon. Partial Ghost-types and users with Shed Shell are unaffected.
Competitive Reasoning: Gives users a niche in trapping Bug-type Pokémon such as Buzzwole, Heracross, and Volcarona, though it's not as effective as Magnet Pull since a lot of other Bug-types can run U-Turn and Bug isn't a dominant type in general.
Thematic Reasoning: Bug Pokémon cannot escape the sweet temptation of honey.

Ability: Defeatist
New Effect: The enemy is also afflicted with defeatist when the user's health drops below half.
Competitive Reasoning: Great for stopping a sweeper by halving their power, granted the user's at half health. It might just be enough.
Thematic Reasoning: Defeatism is contagious.

Ability: Honey Gather
New Effect: Reduces enemy evasion 1 stages when swapped in and the effect persists to the next swap if Honey mon is still in.
Competitive Reasoning: On the few mons that get it, its not great but Ribombee can assure a landing of Toxic or Stun Spore (no grass type will dare switch in and most Guts mons are weak to its Stab).
Thematic Reasoning: Sweet scent on crack. Sorta. It’s honey the most durable time lasting stuff ever.

Ability: Ball Fetch
New Effect: Deals 30% more damage if holding a ball or orb item, and +30% vs enemies holding a ball/orb/choice item.
Competitive Reasoning: Go balls deep for balls. Punish Gutsmons hard!
Thematic Reasoning: Ball go fetch! Take em all!

Ability: Ball Fetch
New Effect: When hit by a ball/bullet move, the user is not affected and can use that move again once. doesnt stack
Competitive Reasoning:
can give an intresting way of having immunity for the holders of this ability, and can also potentially fix 4mss in some mons.
Thematic Reasoning:
the user grabs the ball and throws it back

Ability: Honey Gather
New Effect: This Pokemon is immune to Bug-type moves.
Competitive Reasoning: Cool for blocking U-turn and First Impression.
Thematic Reasoning: Like, the Pokemon “gathers” the “honey” by absorbing Bug moves

Ability: Ball Fetch
New Effect: Forces all single-target Ball/Bullet moves to strike the Pokémon before the Pokemon in question send it back.
Competitive Reasoning: Draws dangerous attacks away from others and damages others in the process.
Thematic Reasoning: Yamper runs towards the ball and catches it before giving it back.

Ability: Honey Gather
New Effect:
Raises Accuracy and Speed by 1 every time attacking a Grass-type Pokemon.
Competitive Reasoning:
Megahorn Spam
Thematic Reasoning:
Grass types would have Sap, which insects would track down.

Ability: Defeatist
New Effect: When above 50% HP, gain 1.2 power and taunts the the opponent. When under 50% HP, retreats and give minus 1 ATK/SpATK
Competitive Reasoning: Give more power to his moves, and kinda gains Parting shot in that sense. In a mixed team, he can certainly be of great use, hitting pretty hard, and being able to change fast. Under 50%, it would work like Emergency Exit. It should be noted that if he used U-turn, the debuff don't apply.
Thematic Reasoning: The Pokemon would be really cocky when he is at his prime, and be a sore loser when he loses.

Ability: Ball Fetch
New Effect: When another Pokémon uses a bullet move, it can use a bullet move following it regardless of its Speed, attacking the opposing Pokemon. User's own ballisitic move hits two time, the second hit having 0.8 power
Competitive Reasoning: Basically Dancer, but with Bullet moves. I would recommend giving Boltund Energy Ball or even Focus Blast for coverage. Calm Mind or Work Up might be of use, if you want to gain stats.*
Thematic Reasoning: When a ball is thrown, a dog's duty is to catch it, and to give it back. And if he give you his ball, you might as well throw it again.

*It doesn't have those moves, it mostly me considering what it could have, later on

And for the funsies, it can be forgotten

Ability: Illuminate
New Effect: Moves boosted by a sunny day, acts as if it was the case. Except if a weather is already in place, moves will act as if there was none. Rejuvenate 1/16 HP under the Sun
Competitive Reasoning: Solar Beam and Solar Blade can now be used more frequently, without needing a white herb to be somewhat effective. Synthesis or Moonlight, and the Solar moves obviously, won't be halved by the other weathers, and remain in their normal state. Under the sun, it won't change how the moves behave, as they will act the same. It should be noted that Fire moves are not boosted, and water moves are not reduced, as there's effectively no weather.
Thematic Reasoning:
The pokemon absorbs light to produce it's own, mimicking a sunny day.

Ability: Ball Fetch
New Effect:
When this pokemon uses a ball move it +1 Speed
Competitive Reasoning:
Electro ball go brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!
Thematic Reasoning:
He starts running faster to catch the ball.

Ability: Honey Gather
New Effect: At the end of the turn, when this pokemon isn't holding an item it gains a Sitrus Berry
Competitive Reasoning:
Constant Sitrus Berries
Thematic Reasoning:
Sitrus Berries are close enough to honey.

Ability:
Slow Start
New Effect: Causes the Attack stat and Speed stat to be only 3/4 during the first three turns in battle. After the three turns are up it gets +1 Attack
Competitive Reasoning:
Loss terrible nerf and an extra kick at the end.
Thematic Reasoning:
He takes a while to get started but when he does he kicks butt.

Ability:
Defeatist
New Effect: Upon entering battle if it has a higher attack stat then the opponent it gets +1 Att. If it has a lower attack stat it gets -1 Att
Competitive Reasoning:
A worse Intrepid Sword
Thematic Reasoning:
The pokemon is being boastful of its strength but looses strength when it realizes it isn't stronger

T.I.A.

formerly Ticktock
Ability: Ball Fetch
New Effect: Takes half damage from ball moves and deals the other half of damage back to the opponent.
Competitive Reasoning: A good punishment for certain Pokemon who abuse these.
Thematic Reasoning: Catch the ball, and throw it back. It still does sting, like Po throwing the fireball in KFP2's climax.

Ability: Honey Gather
New Effect: If the user is holding Honey, traps the opponent if they're Bug-type, ignoring any free chances to escape, and gains a Leftover effects as well.
Competitive Reasoning: Trap some Bugs and stomp them.
Thematic Reasoning: Another bear thing, honey is pretty good to trap them bugs and is pretty tasty.

Ability: Defeatist
New Effect: Applies a switching effect and maximum priority to the next move it uses when it reaches below 50%, but gets -1 Attack and Special Attack every time it switches in when below 50% HP. Only works once per battle.
Competitive Reasoning: Gives the user a "hit and run" tactic when in a pinch, so it can pull out one last ace when hanging on it's Focus Sash. It also can remove the stat debuffs as well if it manages to stay in.
Thematic Reasoning: It's Japanese name is "Timid", so it would make sense that it would be more docile when it feels like it's going to lose.

Aight it's been well over a week so I think it's about time for voting to begin! Be sure to read the rules about set slate voting:

Voting in set slates (Stage 1): Each determined slate will have a certain amount of abilities to be modified, and for each of the abilities, voters will vote for their top 3 choices, with the #1 slot being worth 3 votes, #2 worth 2, and #3 worth 1.
