Victim of the Week 2.0: ZU Edition

Metagames are dynamic and constantly subject to change. However, there are always key Pokemon which must be prepared for and acknowledged during teambuilding. This project is a great way for the community to come together and find ways to tackle these threats and develop a greater understanding of the tier as a whole. This project also serves as a resource for newer and experimented players alike.

  • Every round, we'll pick one Pokemon from the "SS ZU Viability Rankings" to be discussed. The submission stage will last from Monday to Thursday.
  • During the round, post a Pokemon of your choosing from the Viability Rankings which is able to check / counter the current threat, with a Set, Description, and Calculations if necessary. (Note that they MUST be viable, no gimmicks like Farfetch’d or Choice Specs Kangaskhan.)
  • From Friday to Sunday, you'll vote for one or two checks and counters, and, at the end of the round, results will be archived with a link to the posts so that eventually we'll have a bank of checks and counters for each viable threat in the tier with descriptions and sets to match.
  • The same Pokemon may be picked, but they have to have a different set. For example, two people cannot both pick offensive Throh, but having one person pick defensive Throh and the other pick offensive is okay.

Rules:
When nominating your check or counter, please take into consideration this definition from The Smog:
  • Definition
Pokémon A checks Pokémon B if, when Pokémon A is given a free switch into Pokémon B, Pokémon A can win every time, even under the worst case scenario, without factoring in hax.
Pokémon A counters Pokémon B if Pokémon A can manually switch into Pokémon B and still win every time, even under the worst case scenario, without factoring in hax.
There are some parts of those definitions that may be confusing to the unfamiliar, so now I'm going to make sure we're all on the same page. "Hax" does not mean cheats or codes used to win. "Hax" means, loosely, things that have a chance of happening but usually don't, for example, critical hits (under most circumstances), Ice Beam freezing, and Fire Blast missing. This means that we don't take into account these types of things when we analyze if one Pokémon checks or counters another. Despite this, it's unwise to declare that one Pokémon checks another when the victorious Pokémon relies on hitting Focus Blast three times in a row, or something like that. Basically, you're often okay ignoring hax unless something that doesn't have a high chance of happening must happen in order for a Pokémon to check or counter another.
There are some things, like flinching, which you would normally consider to be hax but aren't always so. For example, Jirachi has a 60% chance to flinch a slower opponent with Iron Head, so in this case, flinching is not hax because it happens over half the time. For things such as missing or secondary effects, such as a Scald burn or Special Defense drop from Seed Flare, that have a decently high chance of happening, you need to think about them when you analyze checks or counters. Even though they might fit the standard definition of hax, they happen often enough for you to expect to see them in real situations somewhat commonly. There's no official or best guideline, but in my opinion, if some form of "hax" has a 30% chance or higher of happening, you should keep it in the back of your mind because it's not a negligible occurrence.
  • Only post viable sets, or we will reject your submission. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to let us know on here, Pokémon Showdown!, or Discord.
  • Reservations are allowed, but if you do not edit your post in the 24 hours following your post, anyone is allowed to take your submission.
  • If you think someone else's submission is unviable, please let me or wooper know with a reasoning of why.
  • If your submission isn't clear enough, back it up with some calcs (you can use this website to calc.)
  • Please do not submit any Pokémon or items from the blacklist, either I or waterbend will reject your submission and most likely ask you to delete your post.

Immune to Toxic; Rocky Helmet punishes the only damaging move Miltank uses; Taunt prevents healing; Pain Split keeps yourself healthy; Poison Jab can fish for Poison and kill the weakened Miltank.
Miltank Seismic Toss vs. 240 HP Qwilfish: 100-100 (30.2 - 30.2%) -- guaranteed 4HKO
0 Atk Qwilfish Poison Jab vs. 252 HP / 84+ Def Miltank: 67-79 (17 - 20%) -- possible 5HKO

Black sludge provides reovery, it is fater than miltank and immune to toxic, uses it as set up bait and 2hkos with +2 sludge bombs.

Ability: Guts
EVs: 136 HP / 252 Atk / 60 Def / 60 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Bulk Up
- Drain Punch
- Mach Punch
- Knock Off
With the help of Guts + Knock Off, Gurdurr can serve as an offensive check to Miltank. Body Press doesn’t do much damage to it, while in return it can freely set up Bulk Ups or use Knock Off if Miltank decides to switch out. At best, Miltank’s seismic toss can 4HKO Gurdurr even with Rocks up:
Miltank Seismic Toss vs. 136 HP Gurdurr: 100-100 (28.9- 28.9%) -- guaranteed 4HKO after Stealth Rock
184+ Def Miltank Body Press vs. 136 HP / 60 Def Eviolite Gurdurr: 56-67 (16.2 - 19.4%) -- possible 6HKO
In return, Gurdurr can use Bulk Up to set up on it or 2HKO it with Drain Punch after Rocks. Miltank will be forced to switch, giving Gurdurr the opportunity to use Knock Off to cripple the opposition. Gurdurr doesn’t mind taking Toxic - in fact, it can benefit from its higher damage output from taking status.
252+ Atk Gurdurr Drain Punch vs. 248 HP / 184+ Def Miltank: 170-204 (43.2 - 51.9%) -- 99.6% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock

Avalugg @ Leftovers
Ability: Own Tempo
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 Def
Impish Nature
- Rest
- Body Press
- Curse
- Avalanche
Submitting Avalugg as an offensive check. Avalugg with a monsterous 184 base defense combined with curse completes destroy milktank while healing of toxic and damage with rest. Miltank basically becomes set up father or an opportunity to fire off a monsterous body press It gets free curses in front of milktank and can easily heal off the damage with rest. Body Press does so much damage even unboosted. Although it needs defog support since I didnt want to use boots on this set
252+ Def Avalugg Body Press vs. 252 HP / 84+ Def Miltank: 202-238 (51.2 - 60.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
It could easily switch into miltank
Miltank Seismic Toss vs. 252 HP Avalugg: 100-100 (25.3 - 25.3%) -- guaranteed 5HKO after Leftovers recovery

EVs: 136 HP / 252 Atk / 60 Def / 60 SpD
Miltank Seismic Toss vs. 252 HP Gurdurr: 100-100 (26.7 - 26.7%) -- guaranteed 4HKO after Stealth Rock
184+ Def Miltank Body Press vs. 252 HP / 60 Def Eviolite Gurdurr: 56-67 (14.9 - 17.9%) -- possible 6HKO after Stealth Rock
Um, you have different hp stat in spread and in calc. dont think it matters too much but yeh the difference at end of duel against stoss might be somewhat off (didnt calc for exact)

Trevenant @ Choice Band
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Wood Hammer
- Poltergeist
- Drain Punch
- Horn Leech / Earthquake / Trick
very happy no one stole my idea! this trev set is a hard counter to the above miltank. because you are a ghost-type, thick fat miltank cant touch you with seismic toss, and its only way of damaging you is toxic, which is no problem for this spooky tree thanks to its natural cure ability. although you are slower than miltank, you deal massive damage with wood hammer and drain punch, easily securing a 2hko with the former and having a significant chance with the latter. this set also can use horn leech for another recovery option, or even trick miltank to help support the rest of the team.

252+ Atk Choice Band Trevenant Wood Hammer vs. 252 HP / 84+ Def Miltank: 231-273 (58.6 - 69.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ Atk Choice Band Trevenant Drain Punch vs. 252 HP / 84+ Def Miltank: 192-228 (48.7 - 57.8%) -- 96.9% chance to 2HKO

sableye is a defensive check to the proposed miltank. as long as you get a free switch in, you can taunt to prevent yourself from being hit with a toxic and can toxic it back in return. because you are a ghost type, you cannot be hit with seismic toss and you will easily win the 1v1. im sure of it this time i promise

and with that, the submission phase of the first week of victim of the week 2.0 is now over! thank you to everyone for your submissions, we are very grateful for your participation thus far.

For real, why is Trevenant winning? Wood Hammer doesn't secure to win the 1v1 even versus non Sap Sipper non RH Miltank. You need to lock yourself in a shitmove like Drain Punch or give up your Choice Band. It is like the worse counter. https://replay.pokemonshowdown.com/gen8zu-1487606160-vxawtqdk3rwoh9wqptfv5b15ya4le2lpw

Check: Qwilfish
Counter: Skuntank
actually just did some testing to try and disprove this but in every scenario, even those when miltank doesnt click toxic on the switch or misses the toxic and you get trev in for free, as long as miltank gets the toxic the next turn, it does indeed 1v1 a banded trev if you dont go for trick. thank you tuthur for pointing out my error!

qwilfish has been a great staple in the zu tier this generation. it adds great utility to teams in the form of intimidate, rocky helmet chip, hazards with spikes or toxic spikes, fast taunts, and so much more. after the departure of jellicent and ferroseed to pu, qwilfish has really been able to shine; its recent rise to S-tier just goes to show how great this pokemon is. so...how will you stop it? share your checks and counters! submissions will last until friday january 14 at 11:59 pm gmt -5. have fun everyone!

Hattrem (F) @ Eviolite

EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature

- Sleep Talk
Counter (unless it's SD, then ig it could muscle through Hattrem)
You eat w/e attack Qwilfish throws at you and retaliate with a strong Psychic or Rest of the damage taken by previous switchins. Magic Bounce allows it to bounce back status moves, especially Taunt and hazards. Basically, Qwilfish will never make any progress versus Hattrem.
0 Atk Qwilfish Liquidation vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Eviolite Hattrem: 55-66 (17.2 - 20.7%) -- possible 5HKO
0 Atk Qwilfish Poison Jab vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Eviolite Hattrem: 52-63 (16.3 - 19.8%) -- possible 6HKO

0 SpA Hattrem Psychic vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Qwilfish: 276-326 (82.6 - 97.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Rotom @ Sitrus Berry
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Volt Switch
- Will-O-Wisp
- Defog
- Hex

Counter
Sitrus berry always avoids the 2HKO even if Qwilfish uses Liquidation on the switch in (You Wisp if Liquidation low rolls, and Burn damage makes Volt Switch a guaranteed knock out post-turn (Initial 20% Def Drop doesn't matter)). Additionally, Rotom can also remove any Spikes with Defog without taking damage due to Levitate, as long as it doesn't get Taunted on the switch-in. Being T-Wave immune is a nice bonus, and Pain Split is useless vs Rotom because as long as Qwil isn't at 90% or higher HP, Volt Switch is a guaranteed OHKO.

252 SpA Rotom Volt Switch vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Qwilfish: 300-354 (89.8 - 105.9%) -- 75% chance to OHKO

0 Atk Qwilfish Liquidation vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Rotom: 109-129 (45.2 - 53.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Jynx is à check and outspeeds and OHKOes, it is even immune to the rare Aqua Jet, and can set up with Lovely Kiss or Nasty Plot as it forces Qwilfish out.
252 SpA Jynx Psychic vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Qwilfish: 438-516 (131.1 - 154.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO
