Victim Of The Week [On Hiatus]

Congratulations DawnManeDuskWings! Your submission will be logged in the Archive!
Victim of the Week 44 - Mega Venusaur

Up next we have the Seed Pokemon, Venusaur! Venusaur has a decent Grass/Poison typing, and with its ability Thick Fat, it only has two weaknessess in Flying and Psychic. The Kanto starter also has a great movepool, with options such as Leech Seed, Hidden Power, Earthquake and Knock Off. Combined with its 80/123/120 defensive stats, Venusaur can be tough to take down. So, how do you deal with this mon?

Submissions will be closed in 4 days from now. Good Luck!
Thank you Jhon for your suggestion!

Naganadel @ Dragonium Z

EVs: 20 HP / 232 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Nasty Plot
- Fire Blast
- Sludge Wave
- Draco Meteor

Not only does it hard counter Mega Venusaur, but it gives you the most free setup opportunity you'll ever find. The only thing Naganadel fears is a possible sleep powder and the rare earthquake, both options being more on the lesser side of usage. With resistances to Mega Venusaur's main attacks being Sludge Bomb / Giga Drain / Hidden Power Fire, you're given an extremely free switch and can take the opportunity to set up or fire off some damage on whatever attempts to come in

While it seems contradictory to face a bulky grass type like Mega Venu with a water type , Suicune has on its favor the surprise element and the combination of great bulk plus pressure to stall out to death the fat dinosaur. Its perfect scenario is Venusaur switching in as a counter to Suicune.

Timid Nature plus 142 EVs are enough to outspeed Jolly Breloom and neutral base 80 max speed EVs. The last slot is divided into the option to try and steamroll the opponent's team with calm mind or go full annoying with toxic :)

Mega Latios is a nice check to mega Venu thanks to its super-effective STAB, ability to Calm Mind and ability to Roost off the fat frog's damage. It can switch in on anything except Sludge Bomb from offensive Venu, which will hurt if they get the poison hax. 36 speed EVs allow you to outspeed Breloom, 124 HP allows you to live Mega Gengar's Shadow Ball, maxed out offense to make sure you aren't outclassed by CM Mega Latias, and the rest is thrown into physical bulk. I personally prefer Psyshock over Psychic as combined with Draco Meteor it allows you to hit both defenses, and it allows you to win Calm Mind wars with things like Suicune without having to drop your Special Attack, but if you hate Venusaur in particular, +1 Psychic is a guaranteed OHKO on the most specially defensive variant of Venusaur, and Psychic hurts Venu more than Psyshock in general, even having a 37.5% chance to OHKO Max HP/0 SpDef Venu. Mega Latios also deals well with other fat mons like Toxapex, Tapu Bulu, Porygon2 and Cresselia, so even though it is somewhat of a weird pick I think it might have a niche on dual mega teams.

Tough decision in my perspective. Every single Mega Venusaur I see carries HP Fire and depending on how weak their team is to Naganadel and Heatran, Earthquake is occasionally seen as well. Considering how Mega Venusaur makes up for its meager offensive presence with Sludge Bomb, my vote goes for Vif-Argent's Celesteela. Despite it takes a chunk from HP Fire, it can threaten Venusaur in return with right movesets and most notably, is "immune" to Mimikyu.

Ye also voting for DawnManeDuskWings' SpD Mence. Offensive Venu is pretty rare, so the calcs that were given don't really do justice to just how hard SpD MegaMence walls common Mega Venusaurs.

I really don't like the slashed sub on mence, and I can't bring myself to vote for Naga because the ev spread is impossible. I also don't want to vote for gyarados because I think that a z-bounce, while one of my favorite Gyarados sets, needs to be paired with 3 attacks + DD, as it lacks the ability to sweep many teams due to lack of usable moves or speed if it doesn't have these traits.

I guess I'm going for DawnManeDuskWings, even though I really think most of the sets posted are not up to snuff for optimal bss play (as far as beating the poo out of mega venu and being good in general).

Umm yea somewhat echoing what Chem said... That 2hko with fully invest SpA Mega Venu is insane. There is actually no way Venu is winning that match unless crit which god forbid but even then HP Ice isn't going to OHKO so in the end its gotta go to DawnManeDuskWings

Just stopping by to say, that while I appreciate everyone's votes, I forgot that Substitute is mandatory on SpDef mega mence. I don't often use mence and I guess that is an excuse on the set I have posted.

Victim of the Week 45 - Azumarill

Up next we have the Aqua Rabbit Pokemon, Azumarill! It has a great typing in Water/Fairy and a useful ability in Huge Power, which boosts its attack to sky-high levels. Even though it faces competition from Tapu Fini, Azumarill is still one of the best Mega Blaziken checks in the game, as it can KO Blaziken with a Huge Power-boosted Aqua Jet before getting hit, unlike Fini. Its Belly Drum set isn't as strong as it was the last gen, but it still can be pulled off with proper team support. So, how do you deal with this mon?

Submissions will be closed in 4 days from now. Good Luck!

The only thing people imagine from Azumarill is a brute force; while it is true that Azumarill is relevant as a physical attacker 99% of the time, there are some lure gimmicks from stuff like Sap Sipper perish trap variants. So I would say Mega Venusaur can deal with Azumarill with its bulk and typing. Azumarill obviously won't perish trap Vensaur while taking Sludge Bomb and can't even Toxic this thing on switch.

20 Speed is invested for Mega Venusaur to outspeed neutral nature max speed base 50's (where Azumarill's speed tier sits) so if Mega Venusaur switches into Belly Drum, the hardest hit it can take is +6 Aqua Jet which does this much:

+6 252+ Atk Huge Power Azumarill Aqua Jet vs. 252 HP / 236+ Def Venusaur-Mega: 53-63 (28.3 - 33.6%) -- 0.2% chance to 3HKO
and what Mega Venusaur does in return is:
0 SpA Venusaur-Mega Sludge Bomb vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Azumarill: 146-174 (70.5 - 84%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Choice Band switch-in:

252+ Atk Choice Band Huge Power Azumarill Play Rough vs. 252 HP / 236+ Def Venusaur-Mega: 45-54 (24 - 28.8%) -- 97.6% chance to 4HKO
252+ Atk Choice Band Huge Power Azumarill Knock Off vs. 252 HP / 236+ Def Venusaur-Mega: 44-52 (23.5 - 27.8%) -- 77.5% chance to 4HKO
252+ Atk Choice Band Huge Power Azumarill Return vs. 252 HP / 236+ Def Venusaur-Mega: 68-81 (36.3 - 43.3%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
(last calc is pretty irrelevant but assume this is CT)
