Project Victim of the Week

Counter:

gengar.gif

Gengar @ Focus Sash
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Sludge Wave / Sludge Bomb
- Focus Blast
- Shadow Ball
- Destiny Bond / Taunt

Gengar is maybe considered by most of the Diggersby players as the standard life orb Diggersby total counter , and also the most feared Diggersby Counter. His immunity to all of Diggersby's attacks thanks to the typing and to the ability can allow Gengar to setup or OHKO Diggersby with Focus Blast. There's also a Wild Charge Diggersby set , a bit rare in high level playing , which doesn't compromise his counter role as he is not OHKOed by a normal hit , and because he is faster if Diggersby is Banded. This is probably one of the few really counters of Diggersby , because he is one of the hardest Pokemons to counter when he is boosted and has coverage; Due to this the most considered Diggersby ''counters'' are not actually really counters , but pokèmons that can stop him surely if he has that particular moveset.

Calcs:
252 SpA Gengar Focus Blast vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Diggersby: 326-384 (104.8 - 123.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252+ Atk Huge Power Diggersby Wild Charge vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Gengar: 192-226 (73.5 - 86.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock

149.gif
Dragonite: Counter
Dragonite @ Choice Band
Ability: Multiscale
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Outrage
- Extremespeed
- Earthquake / Superpower
- Fire Punch / Thunder Punch

Multiscale lets Dragonite survive any +0 attacking move easily so switching in is not a problem. It is faster than Diggersby so if Diggersby uses SD on the switch, it has to use Quick Attack, which Dragonite still survives. Dragonite easily OHKO with Outrage or Superpower.
If it switches in on Return:
252+ Atk Life Orb Huge Power Diggersby Return vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Multiscale Dragonite: 146-172 (45.2 - 53.2%) -- 34.8% chance to 2HKO
252+ Atk Life Orb Huge Power Diggersby Quick Attack vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Dragonite (Multiscale broken): 114-136 (35.2 - 42.1%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
Which does not add up to a 2HKO, while:
252+ Atk Choice Band Dragonite Outrage vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Diggersby: 409-483 (131 - 154.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ Atk Choice Band Dragonite Superpower vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Diggersby: 546-644 (175 - 206.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO
We have a very easy OHKO in return
645-therian.gif
Landorus-T: Check
Landorus-Therian @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 140 HP / 156 Atk / 212 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Earthquake
- Stone Edge
- U-turn
- Superpower / Knock Off

Return followed by Quick Attack does slightly more than 80% so it can only check Diggersby once. Superpower is a clean OHKO but EQ can do the trick if Diggersby had enough turns of Life Orb recoil.
-1 252+ Atk Life Orb Huge Power Diggersby Return vs. 140 HP / 0 Def Landorus-T: 204-242 (57.6 - 68.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
-1 252+ Atk Life Orb Huge Power Diggersby Quick Attack vs. 140 HP / 0 Def Landorus-T: 79-95 (22.3 - 26.8%) -- 36.9% chance to 4HKO
Again does not compound to a 2HKO, whereas:
156+ Atk Landorus-T Superpower vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Diggersby: 362-428 (116 - 137.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO
Again a solid OHKO.

Reserving Trevenant.

HARD CHECK

a_wild_trevenant_appeared_by_derekmmelendez_d6r.jpg

"I am Groot!"

Trevenant @ Sitrus Berry (would be a counter with Air Balloon, but yeah, that's a terrible idea)
Ability: Harvest
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 Atk
Impish Nature
- Will-O-Wisp
- Leech Seed
- Protect/Substitute
- Horn Leech

Standard Physically defensive Trevenant. EVs and nature are for maximum physical bulk, which is needed to check Diggersby (as well as other physical attackers that roam OU) better. Thanks to its almost unique typing (same as Gourgeist, another Bugs Bunny check/counter), it resists Diggersby's Earthquake and is immune to both Quick Attack and Return.

The moveset is pretty straightforward; Will-o-Wisp to cripple Diggersby and hinder severely its wallbreaking and sweeping potential, Leech Seed to deal further residual damage while recovering health back (and crippling any non-Grass-type switch in), Protect or Substitute (Protect to stall more passive damage from Wisp and Leech Seed and get more chances of Harvesting the Sitrus Berry back and Substitute for a similar reason), and finally Horn Leech over Phantom Force, because Diggersby is immune to it and Horn Leech is a nice super effective STAB move against him that also happens to be another form of recovery ("why won't this thing die?!" is often heard).

And finally, some calcs:

+2 252+ Atk Life Orb Huge Power Diggersby Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Trevenant: 234-277 (62.5 - 74%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

4 Atk Trevenant Horn Leech vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Diggersby: 218-260 (69.8 - 83.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

This means that if you switch in against any other move than Swords Dance, you get to have a free Sub (as EQ deals pitiful damage and the Diggersby player will usually switch out fearing a burn) or free Leech Seed or WoW (that is taking a good prediction into consideration, so unless you're confident, better try the safer route and go for the Wisp or the Horn Leech if Diggersby has already some damage on it). If Diggersby Swords Dances while you switch Trevenant in, you can take the upcoming hit and heal back with the Sitrus Berry and go for the WoW. Then, you can opt to Protect to try to harvest the Sitrus back and make Diggersby suffer from its burn and then one-shot him with Horn Leech (that OHKOs with the combination of 3 turns of Life Orb recoil and/or burn damage).

Another scenario is you going for the Horn Leech after he Swords Danced the turn you switched in, thus winning if he Earthquakes you that turn, because the health recovered from the Sitrus Berry and the Horn Leech will make you survive another +2 EQ before he dies to another Horn Leech. However, if he decides to go for the SD again (getting to +4) and you don't burn him either you go for the Horn Leech or WoW misses, he can OHKO you:

+4 252+ Atk Life Orb Huge Power Diggersby Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Trevenant: 351-413 (93.8 - 110.4%) -- 62.5% chance to OHKO

To sum up, Trevenant is a good check to SW, LO Diggersby.

Rotom @ Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
IVs: 0 Atk
Timid Nature
-Volt Switch/Thunderbolt
-Will-O-Wisp
-Pain Split
-Shadow Ball

Well not much to say here, Rotom hard counters SD Diggersby as it simply can't touch it...unless you run Wild Charge lol? You can run lefties for more longevity and Pain Split for somewhat reliable recovery. Volt Switch lets you pivot out of stuff, while Tbolt hits harder. WoW is the only way you can hurt Diggersby...then the rest is kind of standard. If you want to, you can run Scarf with something like Trick/Volt Switch/Shadow Ball/HP Ice, although this means you will have to predict a lot more, and miss out on WoW and Pain Split.

Cresselia @ Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
- Reflect
- Ice Beam
- Moonlight
- Thunderbolt

Cresselia can come in on any of Diggerby's attack and proceed to set up a Reflect to soften physical blows for itself and its teammates. Moonlight can be used as a means of recovery so that it can take on Diggersby better. Cresselia can also use Ice Beam to hit Diggersby, which has a high chance to be 2HKOed after Stealth Rock and Life Orb recoil. Thunderbolt is chosen over STAB Psychic in this case so that it can do a little damage to Diggersby's partner, Azumarill.

Relevant calculations here:
252+ Atk Huge Power Diggersby Return vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Cresselia: 136-162 (30.6 - 36.4%) -- guaranteed 4HKO after Leftovers recovery
Diggersby Earthquake vs. Levitate Cresselia: 0-0 (0 - 0%) -- aim for the horn next time
0 SpA Cresselia Ice Beam vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Diggersby: 128-152 (41 - 48.7%) -- 9.8% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock

Status: Check

Terrakion @ Air Balloon
Ability: Justified
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpA / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- Close Combat
- Stone Edge
- Hidden Power Ice
- Stealth Rock

With an Air Balloon intact, Terrakion can come in on any of Diggerby's attack and proceed to outspeed and OHKO Diggersby with Close Combat . Alternatively, Terrakion can set up Stealth Rock to support it's teammates. Stone Edge is chosen for secondary STAB while Hidden Power Ice hits Gliscor and Landorus-T who likes to switch in on Terrakion

Relevant calculations here:
Diggersby Earthquake vs. Air Balloon Terrakion: 0-0 (0 - 0%) -- aim for the horn next time
252+ Atk Huge Power Diggersby Return vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Terrakion: 118-139 (36.5 - 43%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
252 Atk Terrakion Close Combat vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Diggersby: 486-572 (155.7 - 183.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Oh I meant to write Spe, thanks for pointing that out. Typed wrongly because I copied the format from one of my previous posts (of Scizor) which had HP/Atk/Def and changed the numbers and moves and forgot to change Def to Spe. I like 140 HP / 156 Atk over max Atk ones so that it can avoid 2HKOs from several stuff, like Zard X, Excadril and Diggersby, and 156 Atk does not lose any significant OHKOs or 2HKOs anw.

Mismagius@Life Orb
EV's: 252 SpA/252 Spe/4 Def
Trait: Levitate
Timid Nature
-Nasty Plot
-Shadow Ball
-Will-O-Wisp
-HP Fighting

Mismagius has taken a steep decline this gen, but in this situation shines as an all-out counter to this Diggersby set. It is immune to ground and normal type attacks and forces the Diggersby player to switch out. Mismagius will then be able to either set up a Nasty Plot, burn the switch in with WoW, or attack with HP Fighting.

Mandibuzz @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Overcoat
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpD
Bold Nature
- Foul Play
- Roost / Knock Off
- Taunt
- Defog

If Mandibuzz comes in on the SD (or +2 Earthquake, depending on damage rolls on the follow-up Return), it can remove or cripple Diggersby somewhat consistently. Foul Play deals 79% minimum to Diggs. Rocky Helmet+Life Orb damage will finish off Diggersby while sacrificing Mandi in the process. Mandibuzz also provides good utility to the team with Knock Off, Taunt and Defog. This set helps against other physical boosting sweepers as well, dealing with Char-X, Mega Scizor, SD Talonflame, and Mega Pinsir in addition to the big bunny. The only condition Mandibuzz needs to succeed is having Rocks off the field.

Calcs:
+2 0- Atk Mandibuzz Foul Play vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Diggersby: 249-294 (79.8 - 94.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
+2 252+ Atk Life Orb Huge Power Diggersby Return vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Mandibuzz: 390-460 (92.1 - 108.7%) -- 50% chance to OHKO

A few days ago i thought Quagsire was a Check , but after i realized that i made a mistake , thanks to an user who made me notice that , i understood that it wasn't. Quagsire is not a counter , and probably not even a Check , mainly because doesn't OHKO Diggersby with Scald and cannot hold enough Diggersby's attacks.

Week 28:
Thanks for all the bunny checks/counters. I haven't decided on the the third check yet, but that shouldn't stop this from progressing. Two things non/Gengar related:

1. Oversight: Sidnv should have been in the Hall of Fame from the start. He has been added now!
2. New Rule: From Saturday - Tuesday, each person can only nominate one Pokemon. From Wednesday to Friday/early Saturday, you can nominate as many as you want.

Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 132 HP / 160 SpA / 216 Spe

With an Assault Vest, Tornadus-Therian can take a Shadow Ball or Focus Blast coming in, outspeed and Knock Off its life orb, and can heal itself off with Regenerator. It can also come in on Sludge Wave should rocks be off the field - making it a pretty hard check.

252 SpA Life Orb Gengar Sludge Wave vs. 132 HP / 0 SpD Assault Vest Tornadus-T: 148-175 (44.5 - 52.7%) -- 23.8% chance to 2HKO (this is the one attack you can't come in on if rocks are up)

* Mandibuzz can come in on any of Gengar's attack not named Sludge Wave and threaten it with Foul Play, which will OHKO after Stealth Rock and one round of Life Orb recoil. Roost can be used as a means of recovery so that it can take on Gengar better (unless you predict Taunt, where you smack it with Foul Play instead) . Mandibuzz can also use Taunt itself to prevent Gengar from using any of Taunt, Substitute, Will-O-Wisp or Destiny Bond, which gives Mandibuzz an opportunity to Roost with impunity. Lastly, Defog can be used as a means to support Mandibuzz's teammates.

*Sludge Wave has a chance to 2HKO Mandibuzz after Stealth Rock but will 3HKO otherwise

Gliscor @ Toxic Orb
Ability: Poison Heal
EVs: 244 HP / 32 Atk / 192 SpD / 40 Spe
Careful Nature

First looking at Gliscor's stats you wouldn't expect that it can counter Gengar. Thankfully, due to it's great typing and ability in Poison Heal, it can pull of a Specially Defensive set to take on Gengar.

As you can see, Shadow Ball is the best Gengar can do:
252 SpA Life Orb Gengar Shadow Ball vs. 244 HP / 192+ SpD Gliscor: 156-185 (44.3 - 52.5%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Poison Heal
252 SpA Life Orb Gengar Sludge Wave vs. 244 HP / 192+ SpD Gliscor: 94-109 (26.7 - 30.9%) -- possible 5HKO after Poison Heal
252 SpA Life Orb Gengar Focus Blast vs. 244 HP / 192+ SpD Gliscor: 78-92 (22.1 - 26.1%) -- possible 7HKO after Poison Heal

After two Life Orb hits Knock Off finishes the job:

EVs: 240 HP / 244 Def / 24 Spe

A little bit obscure, but not too much. It's a spinner that doesn't get beaten by Gengar, the only relevant spinblocker in OU at the moment (Shadow Sneak Greninja doesn't count, and even then Tenta wins). Tenta can come in on any attack, take it, and then retaliate back with Knock Off. As far as the rest of the set, Scald and Rapid Spin are for utility, and Sludge Bomb is good STAB. Calcs for Gengar attacking Tentacruel

With Life Orb:
252 SpA Life Orb Gengar Shadow Ball vs. 240 HP / 0 SpD Assault Vest Tentacruel: 99-117 (27.4 - 32.4%) -- guaranteed 4HKO
252 SpA Life Orb Gengar Sludge Bomb vs. 240 HP / 0 SpD Assault Vest Tentacruel: 55-65 (15.2 - 18%) -- possible 6HKO
252 SpA Life Orb Gengar Focus Blast vs. 240 HP / 0 SpD Assault Vest Tentacruel: 48-57 (13.2 - 15.7%) -- possible 7HKO

Without Life Orb:

252 SpA Gengar Sludge Bomb vs. 240 HP / 0 SpD Assault Vest Tentacruel: 42-50 (11.6 - 13.8%) -- possible 8HKO
252 SpA Gengar Focus Blast vs. 240 HP / 0 SpD Assault Vest Tentacruel: 37-44 (10.2 - 12.1%) -- possible 9HKO

Tenta in return:
0- Atk Tentacruel Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Gengar: 142-168 (54.4 - 64.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
0- Atk Tentacruel Knock Off vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Gengar: 96-114 (36.7 - 43.6%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

Tentacruel wins unless it's Assault Vest gets Knocked Off before, or it takes a lot of prior damage. This isn't an over centralized Gengar counter either, it can also take down/cripple non-Extrasensory Greninja, Keldeo, Superpower Azumarill, and possibly even Mega Venusaur (Liquid Ooze makes Giga Drain a much less attractive option). Tentacruel may not be king of OU hazard control, but beating Gengar is pretty good for a spinner. Also, Tentacruel has 100 base speed. That seems faster than I would have guessed.

Hard check :

Hippowdon @ Leftovers
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Earthquake
- Crunch
- Slack Off

252 SpA Life Orb Gengar Shadow Ball vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Hippowdon: 152-179 (36.1 - 42.6%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
0 Atk Hippowdon Crunch vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Gengar: 192-228 (73.2 - 87%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock and sandstorm damage

With 2 Turns Life Orb Damage and Sand damage, Hippowdon is able to KO Gengar before Gengar is able to hit 3 Shadow Balls. therefore countering it very well.

Forgot to do chomp for last week lol

Landorus-Therian @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 32 HP / 252 Atk / 224 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Knock Off
- Earthquake
- U-Turn
- Stone Edge

Lando is able to eat up any one hit and retaliate with a clean OHKO via Knock Off. He won take s ball too well, but as long as he's healthy he won't be KOed by it. If he comes in on any other move bar a wisp, he's in an even better position.
