Video game recommendations?

I'm not sure if this is the right place for this, but it seems like the best place for it, so I'm posting here.

Anyway, my sister's wanting a new game, but we already seem to have everything interesting. She has "eclectic" taste in games (her description, not mine), here's some games we have that she likes:
  • Dragon Quest 8
  • Phantasy Star Online Ep 1&2 (sadly, we've never been able to go online, the Cube modem thingy never came to Australia)
  • The World Ends With You
  • Zelda (strangely she doesn't like Twilight Princess)
  • Phoenix Wright
  • Trauma Center
I might edit some more in later when I can get her to look over the list. We have a Wii, a PS2 and a bunch of DSes, so games for those (and earlier things thnks to backwards compatibility) only, and they need to have been released in PAL territories. Preferably in Australia, but if need be we could get a UK game from Ebay.

Also, suggestions for games with co-op modes, preferably three-player (only for GameCube and Wii games that can use Cube controllers like Brawl, and possibly Virtual Console games although most of those are two-player tops, since PS2s only have two controller ports, we only have two Wiimotes, and we are not buying three copies of the same DS game).

If you both have a PC that's half-decent for gaming, download Phantasy Star Online: Blue Burst. It's a free registration and download now (Sega stopped support for the game, and as such it is legal to host it on private servers) so you can play it online with one another. The game becomes exponentially more fun when playing with others in general. The server you'll want is the SCHTSERV (or SCHTHACK, same thing) server. Google it and you'll be having the game running in about 20 minutes to half an hour.

Twilight Princess was one of the worst Zelda games ever, so she has good taste.

If she likes strategy RPGs, have her give Fire Emblem a try. If I'm not mistaken, Radiant Dawn is out on the Wii in Australia, and if not that, you could give the horrible FE 1 port on the DS a try.

She's expressed interest in Blue Burst before, but I don't think we have computers that are up to that. Also no PC controllers, and I imagine PSO with a keyboard would be a pain.

I honestly didn't think TP was that great either, but I had some fun with it.

As for strategy RPGs, we've got that department covered with Disgaea (1, 2, and the DS port of 1) as well as some other games by the same people.

DS: Elite Beat Agents is lots of fun, with good cover voices for the songs

PS2: Kingdom Hearts 1&2 hands down one of the best rpg ever

Wii: Second Twilight Princess, very good game
I don't have it, but I heard Mario Kart for the Wii is pretty good

BRAWL!!!!!!!!!!!

You thought of it yourself. I honestly can't think of a better "2-player" game for wii. (well i can but brawl is fun).

Responding to game suggestions:

Final Fantasy: We have X and X-2. Also have a friend with a couple of the DS ones.
Chrono Trigger: I guess I'll run this by her.
EBA: We have it. My youngest sister (not the one I'm talking about) has pretty much beaten it (she's done Jumping Jack Flash as the Divas, anyone who's played EBA will know how impressive this is). Also, last Christmas she got both Ouendan games. She's taken those games down too.
Kingdom Hearts: Have both, not really her style.
Mario Kart Wii: We have Mario Kart DS (although a friend's borrowing it) and she's not that much of a fan.
Brawl: Have, got it like the day it came out. Notice the Brawl FC in my sig.

Thanks for the suggestions, so far Chrono Trigger's the only promising idea. Any more?

If your sister likes Zelda games, I might try getting Majora's Mask off of Virtual Console. It's pretty fun, doesn't act like other zeldas at all, and you can get it for 10 dollars.

If you've played Dragon Quest 8 and liked it, you should get Dark Cloud 1 or 2. They're not direct sequels and they're made by the same people as DQ8. Personally, I love the games. DC1 was a great launch title and had a pretty interesting, well-rounded story, while DC2 improved on everything that DC1 was merely average at, even though the story wasn't as great. Either way, those are two great games that you might want to consider.

If you guys liked FF10, you might like FF12. In my opinion, it improves on everything in FF10 except for storyline. The story in 10 was pretty good, and 12 is lacking in that regard but it doesn't fail by any means. The battle system is fun and the graphics are stunning.

We have Dark Cloud 2 (or Dark Chronicle as it's known here) and we've played the first one and didn't like it. The whole thirst thing and weapons breaking are major turn-offs.

We once borrowed FF12. Didn't like it.

We already have Majora's Mask thanks to the Zelda collection for the GameCube. In fact, it was the main reason we bought it, since we already had OoT from the bonus disc with Wind Waker.

Have Hotel Dusk. Her main reason for getting it was because she'd heard it was like PW.

Sorry for being all "already have" with a bunch of these, I'd list our full collection but it'd be huge.

You should check out Tales of Symphonia (GCN)which is an RPG that supports up to four people in battles. If you like it you can try Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World (Wii) once you're done.

I mentioned that I'd heard good things about it but she didn't seem interested, but are you saying that the battles are multiplayer? That sounds cool. How exactly does that work?

For the DS I recommend Etrian Odyssey II, one of the coolest RPGs I've played lately
I have never heard of this game. What's it like?

Any more suggestions? Right now she's leaning towards Blue Burst.

And I'm quite intrigued with the idea of Tales of Symphonia's multiplayer battles. What are they like? I've looked at videos of gameplay and some party members seemed to be offscreen a fair bit. Does it zoom out in multiplayer so everyone can see what they're doing? And how would item use work in real-time?

And sorry for double post, but this thread didn't seem to be getting much more attention, and I figured a recently-posted-in thread would stand out.

The problem with Tales of Symphonia is that it does centre on the main character which puts some of the other characters off-screen. They fixed this for the later entries in the series (Tales of the Abyss, Tales of Vesperia, and Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World), but you don't own two of the systems and the last one is a direct sequel.

One person controls the game out of battles but every battle is multiplayer. Symphonia is probably about $20 now and a good one to look at imo. One of my favourite games.

A bit of an update: we've gotten Blue Burst downloaded, but it doesn't want to work properly. She can log in fine, but when she chooses "start game" it goes on about "get the right client" or something along those lines. Anyone here who can help?

It's an RPG based on dungeon crawling. Basically you have to explore a giant labyrinth, draw the map with your stylus as you progress, complete quests, level up, customize your characters, etc. Apparently its main criticism would be that it's really for "hardcore" RPG fans, but I'm not much of one and liked it instantly...

Sounds too punishing for our tastes, I think we'll pass. Partly since I'm one of those people who takes maps for granted.

I really strongly recommend using the SCHTSERV forums for help with technical issues, but I know what your problem is.

Delete whatever shortcuts you have now. On XP/Vista, go to your C: drive and then program files, then looking for the PSO BB folder. Inside, you'll find some more folders and some .exe files... one of them should be named "online". Right-click it, create a shortcut, and then move that shortcut to the desktop. Should work fine from there.

As for Tales of Symphonia, the only way to get a good grasp on the battle system is to watch a video of it. Here's a secret boss battle that doesn't really include any spoilers, but do not look at any comments on the video or any related videos or you'll be walking into spoiler land: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W_5Yt4l-QKg

When playing in multiplayer mode, I recommend the both of you using melee characters so that the spellcasters off-screen won't distract you and neither of you will get lost. Personally, I really enjoyed using Genis, the "black mage" archetype character. When the person controlling him is player 1, the camera zooms out and allows for a full view of the battlefield, so that no one gets lost.

Edit: If you'd like to play PSO with myself, my girlfriend, or my other friends, please PM me. I'd be happy to play with you guys whenever I'm online on PSO. You can also PM my friend Veedrock on Smogon, he's currently looking for PSO players.

We're still not having any luck. We've found the "online" file, but it doesn't work. In fact, we're now worse off than last night. We haven't made a shortcut for it but if the file itself isn't working then surely a shortcut wouldn't either.

Xenogears and Legend of Dragoon for PS1
Resident Evil 4 and Tenchu: Wrath of Heaven for PS2
Super Mario 64 for DS

Those are good ones from the only systems I own that you don't already have listed :]

Thanks for the ideas, but I think we're good now. The PS1 games you listed would be the most suited to us, but we'll pass. Partly because our only PS1 memory card is clogged with Digimon games (which are pretty good). The PS2 games just don't suit us, and we already have Mario 64 DS.

Any co-op suggestions? So far the only one suggested was Tales of Symphonia, and to be honest, I'm more interested in it than she is right now.

On a bit of a tangent, it's my youngest sister's birthday and she got a PSP with a rhythm game I doubt anyone here has heard of (partly because it's Japanese). I remember hearing a fair while ago about somehow getting PS1 games onto a PSP. Any truth to that? And if so, how?
