Volbeat

It is probably a good idea to run Bug Buzz to try and take on Erufuun. use Bug Buzz as it tries to predict a tail glow and uses encore on you. should be at least a 2HKO.

on a side note, Volbeat has found another wonderful partner in Kokoromori. after just one tail glow and a baton pass, Kokoromori has a +6 boost thanks to its dream world ability: Simple.

so here is a possible combo for them ...

Volbeat ~ Focus Sash
-Mischievous Heart-
Tail Glow
Baton Pass
Encore
Bug Buzz / Thunder Wave

Kokoromori ~ Leftovers (?)
-Simple-
Assist Power (after the baton pass, it is a 140 BP Special Psychic Move)
Air Slash
Roost / Amnesia (+4 sp.def with simple)
Psycho Shock / Shadow Ball / Hidden Power (Fighting) / Roost

A +6 sp.atk boost gives the move Assist Power a sweet base power of 140 to abuse as it is +20 per boost if i am not mistaken, not to mention it gets STAB on it, so you are looking at a 210BP move for at least neutral coverage on anything that isn’t psychic, dark or steel. Then you have Air Slash for a secondary STAB and we use Amnesia in place of Calm Mind as we will already have the necessary sp.atk boosts, and will instead get extra sp.def from amnesia, allowing a whopping +4 to his sp.def in one shot. We round off the set with Psycho Shock to hit Special Walls better with a pseudo physical attack. If your health worries you than you can opt for Roost somewhere in the last 2 slots, and if you want better coverage, add in Shadow Ball or HP Fighting instead of Psycho Shock.

If Assist Power is 140 BP at +6, then there's no need for Psycho Shock, Blissey takes 90.3% - 106.4% from a timid LO AP.

Also I would run Assist Power, HP Fighting, Shadow Ball, and Protect with LO. Roost and Amnesia are really unneccesary because it is not taking a hit anytime soon, and Protect can help you scout choiced moves for when you get forced out by something with a Scarf.

Base 114 speed is really trollish, means Timid Starmie can beat it with ease, and a lot of things in this meta are running scarf. Its sure to do some major damage, but it will be taken out very fast.

ahh that is some useful information. as i didn't do any calculations i missed seeing how well assist power hit special walls for.

Also it does seem that Life Orb is very helpful on it, but I opted to make the set without it as its power is already very significant, and it might not be at full health due to Stealth rocks and/or any damage taken after the initial Baton Pass if the enemy wasn't Encored into a non-attacking move. If you are confident your encore will go through and aren't worried about the residual damage than Life Orb is probably better. Flying Jewel might be interesting as well for a even more powered up Air Slash one time since Assist Power is ridiculously powerful already anyways.

You can also run a Choice Scarf set yourself, your opponent might just assume it is faster than its pokemon and send in something like non-scarf jolteon to revenge kill it, thus losing another pokemon to kokoromori.

try for the Encore though, Kokoromori REALLY appreciates the opponent being locked into a non-attacking move by Volbeat.

If Erufuun switches in on your Tail Glow, it will Encore you before you can execute a Bug Buzz.

the statement you quoted was directed more towards a situation where both Volbeat and Erufuun were used as leads, where the volbeat would use bug buzz anticipating a taunt from the opponent, who would falsely assume a tail glow.

Is it just me or did GameFreak go all out on stat boosting moves, such as Butterfly dance, and batton passing by giving Volbeat and many other pokemon this abilty.

They felt guilty about not adding any "new" mechanics in 1v1 and decided to go with stat boosts that did more than +2.

The result was this.

the way you worded that was very confusing. if you are talking about his ability: Mischievous Heart, then yes, a select few did get it and are able to use it effectively. but by no means "many" pokemon get the ability. 11 if you count the non-evolved forms and the dream world exclusive ones.

If your talking about Tail Glow, then no, still only Manaphy and Volbeat have this move and it is exclusive to them, besides being sketched by Smeargle. I always figured Ampharos would get it but it never did.

And if you meant baton pass well then Baton Pass was meant for stat boosts to be passed to pokemon who cant use them effectively. it is why it was created, to set up. what point is baton pass if the pokemon using it cant boost its own stats? Additionally, only 2 pokemon have both Baton Pass AND Mischievous Heart. Volbeat and Illumise, and the female counterpart Illumise can only pass boosts gained from Growth which increases attack and sp.attack one stage each so she is highly outclassed unless passing to a mixed sweeper. and about 44 or so Fully Evolved pokemon have access to it (more if you count their prevos). out of 649 pokemon, thats actually not that many.

I think you mean cheer up

No i mean Growth. The move Growth, which Illumise gets by breeding and which used to only raise sp.atk, has been boosted in Black/White to now raise Sp.atk and Atk each +1. So while Cheer Up has the same effect, Illumise must use Growth as it cannot learn Cheer Up through level up, breeding or TM

Smogon's Official B/W Research Thread has it up. ^ is states that it is at least +3. more testing needs to be done to see if it is 4 or 5. but it is assumed to be 3 for now, as with only 2 Tail glows you are at +6 and cannot get any more boosts from it.

the actual Move's research thread ^

If what everyone is saying about tail glow is true, I don't see manaphy leaving ubers anytime soon. But that's just me speculating...

Random thought: against something like Weavile, who might try to stop your Baton Pass with Ice Shard:

Opponent switched in Weavile
Volbeat used Tail Glow

Weavile used Ice Shard
Volbeat used Thunder Wave

Volbeat used Baton Pass
Weavile used Ice Shard on a Lucario that's going to crap on the rest of his team

Weavile still only gets 1 Ice Shard in, except now that he has a paralyzed priority user instead of, well, a priority user.

Edit: Or Weavile could predict your obvious Baton Pass and Low Kick you.

Just a little fun-fact interruption, but in Japanese, Tail Glow is actually "Firefly Light", so that explains why Amphy might not have it.

Also, to everybody who's talking about a Volbeat+Kokoromori combo, Simple doubles stat changes, but doesn't count them as actual stat boosts, so while Kokoromori would have +6 SPA, the game would only factor it as +3 for Assist Power.

This makes sense and is probably the way it works. I would like to test this out but I'm about 90% sure that what you are saying is correct. Even so, with a Tail Glow passed to Kokoromori and an Amnesia under his belt, that'd still give him a 120BP Special move with STAB from a +6 Special attack and +4 sp.def for shrugging off special attacks. If not he still has an 80BP move until he gets the Amnesia down, which is still highly destructive off a +6 sp.atk with added STAB.

Oh, thats interesting about the firefly light in japanese. it still doesn't explain why Manaphy gets it though.

if you guys wanna test if tail glow is more than a +3, you should do some damage calcs, assuming it is a plus three, and attack a pokemon with, like, a NVE move, so that at a +3 they would survive 100% of the time, so if they die, you Know its more than a +3. rinse and repeat till you figure out the exact boost.

if anyone wants to test it thats awesome and even though i doubt its more than a +3 it would be nice to have the 100% answer on the question. as of now its probably very low priority, but again, if anyone has B/W and wants to try it out, feel free. +3 is amazing enough, as with 2 boosts you will be at +6. but imagine if it was +4 or +5! i wont get my hopes up, lol

XD.
It can baton pass tail glow before CB Scizor's Bullet Punch omg!
I love this guy since RS Gen. I think you can try a trick-band + Tail Glow pass.
Trick-Band Glow Passer
Mischievous Heart~Choice Band
Tail Glow
Trick
Baton Pass
Filler

I think it would be better to Trick a Choice Specs since then the filler move could be Bug Buzz and actually be useful in the event that Volbeat has reason to attack. But a Really cool item for trick would be Iron Ball! Don't care about the speed halving since trick will still have +1 priority, so you can disable a fast sweeper very easily.

I would be interested to know whether Volbeat can survive a Choice Band Extremespeed from Lucario or Arcanine.

Here's a log showing how epic Volbeat can be.

To sum it up, I passed +6 SpA to a Scarf Heatran who got his flash fire activated while under the sun.

That's a freaking 1.5k special attack almost, hitting with 120*STAB*Flash fire*Sun=405 BP fire blast. I was going to use eruption, but it was illegal with flash fire.

Too bad 3/8 of my fire blasts missed on one of the most sweep ever. :(

Id prefer a different EV spread from all the suggested ones.. Ya know... ONE THAT'LL MAKE SURE HE LIVES.

VolLead @ Focus Sash

252 HP / 4 Def / 252 Speed - Timid or
252 HP / 252 Def/ 4 SpD - Timid

~Tail Glow
~Baton Pass
~Encore
~Substitute / Bug Buzz

These EV spreads make LIVING easier. Keep it mind, Volbeat resists Mach Punch and takes neutral damage from Bullet Punch/Ice Shard/Fake Out so the second EV spread might actually be prefered since you should still out-speed/priority Scizor, unless it's scarfed. Why max SpA when Volbeat is in all honesty only good for baton passing tail glow? If it actually comes down to Volbeat being your last pokemon, you'd be screwed anyway. This ensures it'll atleast survive to pass.

^Why are you investing in its defenses? You're using Focus Sash to ensure that you can survive a hit and then BP out.

Mainly for the chance of getting hit by a Fake Out and having the Focus Sash break, or the chance that my sweeper gets KO'd and I need enough to survive a hit while attempting a second tail glow pass. Obviously, It's not as conventional as the ones listed, but it's what I like to do.

Just forget about egg moves on Mischievous Heart Volbeat.

Volbeat is male-only.

They might come with the Volbeat when it's released, but we can't assume. So we can't use egg moves.
